  • The Servants of Chivalry?: Dwarves and Porters in Malory and the
           Middle English Gawain Romances
    • Abstract: Dwarves and porters occupy the margins of Middle English Arthurian romances, relaying messages, holding horses (or stealing them), and opening gates (or controlling them). These often nameless figures act as servants or sidekicks for knights and lords, helping and hindering passage through the landscape of chivalric endeavor. Given their supporting roles—without the primacy of an aristocratic protagonist or love interest, and lacking the cultural authority of other minor characters such as hermits—dwarves and porters have rarely been addressed in their own right. However, this article contends that such bit-part or marginal characters have a lot to tell us about how Arthurian romance works, and that the ... Read More

  • ‘Ceaselessly losing our identity’: Psychic Rupture in ‘King
           Arthur’s Tomb’
    • Abstract: ‘If there exists a ‘discourse’ which is not a mere depository of thin linguistic layers, an archive of structures, or the testimony of a withdrawn body, and is, instead, the essential element of a practice involving the sum of unconscious, subjective, and social relations in gestures of confrontation and appropriation, destruction and construction—productive violence, in short—it is “literature,” or, more specifically, the text.’ Walter Pater created a new category to describe William Morris’ poetry—aesthetic poetry. This poetry echoes an older medievalism characterized by ‘mystic passion, passing here and there into the great romantic loves of rebellious flesh, of Lancelot and Abelard.’1 Pater’s ... Read More

  • Caritas Begins at Home: Virtue and Domesticity in Chrétien’s
           Yvain
    • Abstract: Chrétien de Troyes’ heroes are frequently thrown into situations requiring them to prove their honor, and the proving usually comes about through a central virtue with which the heroes are closely connected. In Yvain, ou le Chevalier au Lion, the hero Yvain is proven honorable through the virtue of caritas—love directed toward a higher purpose than oneself—which is the theological virtue under which all others are ordered. This ordering of virtue assumes a Christian approach, and Chrétien provides in Yvain a character who embodies caritas as espoused, in particular, by Peter Abelard and Heloise in their letters and in Abelard’s independent works on Christian ethics. While other philosophers address similar ... Read More

  • He Dreams of Dragons: Alchemical Imagery in the Medieval Dream Visions of
           King Arthur
    • Abstract: From King Alfred’s English translation campaign in the tenth century through Edmund Spenser’s creation of a foundational English epic in The Faerie Queene (1594), medieval and early modern English writers were invested in establishing and developing a ‘national identity’; how this sense of Englishness was achieved has become a central line of inquiry in premodern English literary studies.1 The work of tracing the development, testing, and refining of concepts of England and Englishness through the English Arthurian tradition lies at the heart of this scholarship, and the number of classic and more recent critical studies exploring the role of the Arthurian legend in the development of, first, a British—and ... • Monster Relics: The Giant, the Archangel, and Mont-Saint-Michel in the
           Alliterative Morte Arthure
    • Abstract: The Giant of Mont-Saint-Michel has been called ‘the most troubling monster in all of romance,’1 and he is, certainly, at least one of the most complex. The story of the giant’s defeat is first narrated by Geoffrey of Monmouth (ca. 1136), and then by Wace (ca. 1155), Laʒamon (ca. 1200), Robert Mannyng of Brunne (1338), and Malory (1485), among others.2 Yet this giant is, perhaps, at his most complex and terrifying when he is described in the fourteenth-century Alliterative Morte Arthure.3 Here, the Giant resembles a greyhound, a bear, a frog, a boar, a badger, and numerous other irreconcilable animals, so that he is impossible to picture, despite being vividly described.4 His demonic parentage, implicit in ... • John Gower in England and Iberia: Manuscripts, Influences, Reception ed.
by Ana Sáez-Hidalgo and R.F. Yeager (review)
    • Abstract: The essays in this volume originated as papers delivered at the John Gower Society’s second International Congress held at the Universidad de Valladolid in Spain in 2011. Gower scholarship has been on the rise, and there are a number of conference-related essay collections of interest to scholars and students, but this volume, as well as the Congress that occasioned it, breaks new ground by exploring the connection between England and Iberia in the late Middle Ages, specifically in regards to Gower’s work. As the Introduction states, Gower’s Confessio Amantis is the first vernacular English poem translated into another vernacular language, and it was translated into two, Portuguese and Castilian, by Robert ... • Telling Tales and Crafting Books: Essays in Honor of Thomas H. Ohlgren ed.

    • Abstract: Telling Tales and Crafting Books celebrates the works and interests of Purdue University’s eminent medievalist Thomas Ohlgren. Like the scholar himself, the volume is remarkably coherent, embracing collaboration and exploring topics deeply, while also providing insightful introductory surveys for new audiences. Kaufman, Hughes, and Armstrong have mirrored Ohlgren’s interests, teaching, and deep learning in the volume quite remarkably. The book is divided into three parts, representative of Ohlgren’s major research interests: ‘Old English and the North’; ‘Robin Hood’; and ‘Books and Literature.’ Each section contains at least one essay suitable for use in undergraduate classrooms, and several would be ... • Middle English Romance and the Craft of Memory by Jamie McKinstry (review)
    • Abstract: Jamie McKinstry’s Middle English Romance and the Craft of Memory promises to explore ‘the workings of the memorial faculty’ (9) in the romance genre. Romance, of course, is always in some sense about remembering the past (one could indeed say the same of narrative in general), but this book wants to think about how memory is figured within the romances as ‘a set of processes and challenges experienced by the characters and audience’ (18). In other words, McKinstry is arguing that romance expresses a characteristic self-consciousness regarding the importance of memorial practice. The book opens with an overview of medieval theories of memory, beginning with Aristotle’s Memoria and moving through ... Read More

  • Wigamur ed. by Joseph M. Sullivan (review)
    • Abstract: Joseph M. Sullivan’s edition and facing-page English translation of the thirteenth–century Arthurian romance Wigamur is a welcome addition to Middle High German and medieval Arthurian studies. Wigamur, as Sullivan points out, ‘has remained among the least studied of all German Arthurian narratives’ in part due to ‘the absence until recently of fully accessible modern editions’ (xi). With this volume Sullivan’s contribution to medieval German—and Arthurian—studies is twofold. The English translation makes the narrative accessible to a wider audience, and Sullivan also provides a new edition of the text that nicely supplements Nathanael Busch’s 2009 edition and German translation of the romance. The ... Read More
