  • The 2016 Loomis Lecture: Moral Chivalry and the Arthurian Revival
    • Abstract: One of the things that led to the Arthurian Revival in the nineteenth century and that fostered the creation of Arthurian books and Arthurian images at that time and long afterward was an emphasis on an idealized conception of knighthood, which many believed could serve as a model for behavior, particularly the behavior of the young. This view of knighthood that emphasizes morality and character, as we will attempt to demonstrate, has its origins in the Middle Ages as an important aspect of chivalry but becomes the primary and even the defining quality of knighthood in many of the writings of historians and antiquarians in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and is in turn popularized by literature, art, and ... • Arthurian Romance between Parody and Unbridled Allegory: La Mule sanz
           frain
    • Abstract: No longer described in terms of generic decrepitude, ‘disintegration and decay,’1 the Old French Arthurian verse romances of the first half of the thirteenth century have received increasing attention in recent decades for their incisive critiques of courtly-chivalric ideology and its narrative apparatus. Contesting the compatibility of the romance values of proece and amors and the extent to which they constitute a viable or sufficient knightly ethics, the so-called ‘epigonal romances’ deconstruct the conventions that both define an increasingly codified tradition and disseminate its easy truths. The texts thus thematize their reworking of received motifs while extending Chrétien de Troyes’ ironic self-reflexivity ... Read More

  • Athelstan, ‘Twist-Beard,’ and Arthur: Tenth-Century Breton Origins for
           the Historia Regum Britanniae
    • Abstract: Geoffrey of Monmouth, the self-styled translator of the Historia Regum Britanniae (henceforth HRB) maintained that his work derived from ‘Britannici sermonis librum uetustissimum’ [a very old book in the British tongue].1 He further claimed that Walter, Archdeacon of Oxford, had obtained the book ‘ex Britannia’ [from Brittany]. Scholars today, however, very much doubt Geoffrey’s assertions. They suspect that there never was ‘a very old book,’ instead contending that Geoffrey fabricated most of the HRB.2 The cornerstone of this thinking is surely John Tatlock’s monumental study of the HRB, The Legendary History of Britain, wherein Tatlock asserts that the scores of characters and events in the HRB with no known ... • ‘Mervayle what hit mente’: Interpreting Pained Bodies in
           Malory’s Morte Darthur
    • Abstract: When Malory’s Lancelot, riding over a bridge on a knightly adventure, meets a ‘foule carle’ who blocks his way, he responds by drawing his sword and splitting him in two from the head to the chest.1 Andrew Lynch notes of this scene that, ‘there is no pain, nor is there any blood.’2 He acknowledges an important peculiarity of the Morte Darthur: it is pervaded by brutal violence, yet rarely acknowledges the painful consequences of that violence. Jean E. Jost has observed that ‘pain, blood and death . . . appear to have no impact on either the aggressor or Malory, who relates his gory tale with no affect. Deeds such as unthinking decapitation perpetrated most barbarically and blissful disregard for the loss of life ... Read More

  • Bertilak’s Green Vision: Land Stewardship in Sir Gawain and the
           Green Knight
    • Abstract: King Arthur and his knights are aristocratic men, the members of society who historically divided the land into civilized territories or wild spaces. Because Arthurian knights often exemplify social ideals, in a text like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight that values responsible maintenance of the natural environment, they, theoretically, should also represent the model of proper stewardship of the land. Yet the Pearl-poet, whose interest in landscape and green spaces has long been recognized, chooses another figure to embody that ideal: Bertilak, the Green Knight, who occupies a castle at a distance from Camelot and is treated as a stranger to the Arthurian court, showcases a more intricate understanding of the ... • Milk or Blood?: Generation and Speech in Chrétien de Troyes’ Perceval,
           ou le Conte du graal
    • Abstract: The first scenes of Chrétien de Troyes’ twelfth-century Old French romance Perceval ou le Conte du graal (Perceval or the Story of the Grail) unfold in the Gaste Forest, the ‘Waste Forest,’ and yet this wasteland is depicted as fertile, and it is springtime: ‘Ce fu au tans qu’arbre florissent / Foillent bochaische, pré verdisent’ (ll. 67–68).1 The young hero sets off from his mother’s manor on this spring morning to watch the ploughmen harrow the greening fields, lands belonging to and strongly identified with his mother: ‘Et pansa que veoir iroit / Hercheors que sa mere avoit / Qui ses avaines li erchoient’ (ll. 79–81). The trope of the waste forest, wasteland, and waste castle has long invited reflection on its ... Read More

  • Gawain and the Nick of Time: Fame, History, and the Untimely in Sir Gawain
           and the Green Knight
    • Abstract: ‘Þaʒ I be not now he þat ʒe of speken.’But sometimes the future is latent in us without our knowing it, and our supposedly lying words foreshadow an imminent reality. When Gawain flinches before the first swing of the Green Knight’s axe, Bertilak offers a harsh judgment, declaring ‘“Þou art not Gawayn”’ (l.2270).1 In this climactic moment of the poem, Gawain’s failures have become numerous. By not disclosing that he accepted the green girdle from Lady Bertilak, he violates the Exchange of Winnings game that he entered into with her husband. However, the rules of that game were devised in such a way that he could do nothing but fail: he must either reject the Lady’s offer of the lace and fail to live up to his ... Read More

  • The Anglo-Norman Lay of Haveloc. Gallica 37 ed. by Glyn S. Burgess and
           Leslie C. Brook (review)
    • Abstract: The legend of Havelock the Dane is one of the most compelling stories of the Middle Ages: it tells the tale of Havelock (or Haveloc, or Havelok), a disinherited prince, raised by a loyal fisherman, sent to work in the royal kitchens, and his wife, also disinherited, with whose aid he rediscovers his royal identity and reclaims both of their inheritances. The medieval popularity of the Havelock legend is indicated by its re-imagination across the languages and genres of medieval English literature: French, Latin, and English; romance, hagiography, and history. The medieval popularity of the tale, however, has been obscured by the difficulty of accessing the varied iterations of the tale. Obscured, that is, until ... Read More

  • Telling the Story in the Middle Ages. Essays in Honor of Evelyn Birge Vitz
ed. by Kathryn A. Duys, Elizabeth Emery, and Laurie Postlewate (review)
    • Abstract: This volume finds itself in the ambiguous position of being both a tribute to Evelyn Birge Vitz and a scholarly enterprise in its own right, capitalizing on Vitz’s research, but—fortunately—building its specific momentum and opening intriguing new perspectives. It so happens that Vitz’s studies have encompassed a large range of texts, and have put into (good) use many theoretical approaches that had not often been harnessed together to produce such original results. When the editors, in the Introduction, suggest that Vitz has done Cultural Studies before the concept was invented, they ipso facto acknowledge the diversity of the contributions gathered in honour of Vitz, the more so since they also underline the ... • The Arthur of the Iberians: The Arthurian Legends in the Portuguese and
Spanish Worlds ed. by David Hook (review)
    • Abstract: The Arthur of the Iberians is the long-awaited eighth volume in the Arthurian Literature in the Middle Ages series published by Wales University Press and edited by Ad Putter. Those of us Iberianists, who have been making do with the seminal but badly outdated study of Henry Thomas (1920) and the more recent (in medievalists’ terms) study of William Entwistle (1975), must now do a happy dance, for David Hook has come to make all our Iberian-Arthurian dreams come true. No longer must we bear the scorn of our colleagues in Welsh, English, German, French, Scandinavian, Latin, and Italian, who, on the quads and in the pubs, tauntingly bandied about the series’ volumes dedicated to their fields—yes, you all remember; ... • Brothers and Sisters in Medieval European Literature by Carolyne
           Larrington (review)
    • Abstract: In Malory’s Morte Darthur, Gawain’s emotional reaction to the accidental killing by Lancelot of his brothers Gareth and Gaheris is one of the most vividly depicted of any in that great work: he swoons and lies as if dead, and upon awaking runs weeping to King Arthur. It is a powerful demonstration of brotherly love; but as Carolyne Larrington points out, it is an emotional reaction complicated by Gawain’s knowledge that Gareth loved Lancelot better than his own brothers. Part of Gawain’s anguish is caused by the inevitable friction between competing ties of blood and other social bonds. Gawain’s duty is to avenge his brothers; but he goes too far in refusing any kind of settlement with Lancelot. Gawain cannot ... Read More

  • King Arthur’s European Realm: New Evidence from Monmouth’s Primary
           Sources by Paul Sire (review)
    • Abstract: Five hundred years ago, the humanist scholar Polydore Vergil radically altered the long-standing medieval historiographical assumption, deriving primarily from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, that King Arthur had embarked on a series of conquests that had netted him a European empire that rivaled, if not surpassed, Charlemagne’s. Vergil pointed out that there were absolutely no contemporary continental sources that could verify the existence of this Arthur or his empire; in fact, much of the historical record as it has come down to us would make such a series of conquests impossible. Since the sixteenth century, many a man of letters—taking offense at Vergil’s decisive dismantling of any ... Read More

  • The Love Potion by Frank Martin (review)
    • Abstract: The Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago’s innovative, younger, and feistier opera company, is praised (sometimes scorned) for taking risks. Its record may be somewhat spotty, but the 2016–2017 season has opened with a low-key, but poignant, success in its courageous revival of Frank Martin’s well-known, but rarely performed opera (oratorio), Le Vin Herbé (not entirely accurately or subtly translated as The Love Potion).Frank Martin, a Swiss composer, came of age musically in his fifties, chronologically in the late 1930s, and composed steadily until his death in 1974, ten days after he stopped work on his last cantata. He died in the Netherlands, where he had lived for many years, and was buried in Geneva. His Swiss ... Read More
