  • Translation and Power in Lawman's Brut
    • Abstract: When the beautiful Saxon princess Rouwenne meets the British king Vortigern in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Brittaniae (ca. 1138), she greets him; unlike most speakers in Geoffrey's historical account, she does not produce Latin words. Rather, she addresses the king in English, saying 'Lauerd king, wasseil.'1 Geoffrey thus linguistically marks the clear separation between Rouwenne and the British court: the foreignness of her language requires the intervention of a translator. The first surviving Anglo-Norman French verse translation of his text, Wace's Roman de Brut (1155), preserves this bilingualism along with the ensuing translation scene. One link further down the chain, Lawman, a Worcestershire ... Read More

  • 'Culhwch and Olwen': Welsh Giants and Social Identity
    • Abstract: In medieval literature, heroes often prove their worth by facing monstrous opponents, opponents who defy the rules of nature and society and who must be defeated. Among such monsters are the many giants that haunt the barren lands outside of society. Such creatures, appearing regularly in Arthurian literature, represent the excesses of humanity. They, as Jeffrey Jerome Cohen says, 'resemble the personified sin of Gluttony; with their gross, ingestive corporeality, they threaten to devour any identity produced through a disciplined regime.'1 This appetite is not limited to food but includes sexuality as well; as products of rape, they often become rapists themselves. In order to protect society, the hero must seek ... Read More

  • Politics and Horsemanship in Chrétien de Troyes' Erec et Enide
    • Abstract: Adiscussion of horses and politics in Chrétien's Erec et Enide must acknowledge the critical work of William Sayers and Thomas D. Hill, both of whom puzzle delightfully over the nature and meaning of what Sayers calls 'the complex equine culture of medieval Europe, a culture in one way so taken for granted in the literature that it seems a simple ground against which other narrative action is projected.'1 Studies of the poem often make careful mention of Enide's grey palfrey and her parti-colored sorrel, among other horses in the poem—not least of which is an appearance by the most famous of all Arthurian horses, Sir Gawain's destrier, or warhorse, Gringalet.2 The horse as symbol of power invites readings that draw ... • Sitting on the Sidelines: Disability in Malory
    • Abstract: In Malory's Le Morte Darthur, we find a sword that 'never man drew hit but he were dede or maymed.'1 This clearly represents the dangers of chivalric endeavor: violence done to the body, resulting in death or impairment. One might imagine that death, especially in one's sins, would be the more serious outcome, yet here there is an equivalence produced by the sentence structure, 'dede or maymed'—and indeed impairment, to a man of arms, is presented as a fate to be dreaded like death. The chivalric body, constantly endangered by violence, is yet always an active body, unimpaired and capable of committing violence, and this ability is essential to the knight's inclusion in the chivalric community. In this essay, I will ... • Outlaw Heroes as Liminal Figures of Film and Television by Rebecca A.
           Umland (review)
    • Abstract: It is an old-said saw that 'all comparisons are odious.' So Rebecca Umland has waded into somewhat dangerous waters as she seeks to compare Casablanca's Rick Blaine, Shane, Dirty Harry, and Batman, among others, to the medieval knight errant in general and to Malory's Lancelot in particular. In Outlaw Heroes as Liminal Figures of Film and Television, Umland traces the origin of the heroic loner in Hollywood films about cops, vigilantes, and action heroes back to cinematic and television westerns (including the 'disguised western' Casablanca), and ultimately to medieval romance and the figure of the knight, principally Malory's Lancelot. The book is organized into three sections. The Introduction and Part I begin by ... Read More

  • Medievalism: A Manifesto by Richard Utz (review)
    • Abstract: Richard Utz's latest book, Medievalism: A Manifesto, aims to do nothing less than to reform the ways in which we think about academic engagement with the Middle Ages, and with medievalism as a whole. Pulling very few punches, Utz argues from the outset that Medieval Studies has in some cases become a rarefied and elite discipline that has lost touch with its public roots, and that risks becoming 'an exclusive clan of specialists communicating mostly with each other' (xi). The book has been purposefully designed to be 'edgy' (xii), using a forum that permitted him to 'speak to [his] colleagues, but to many more of them' (xii) than traditional library-bound scholarship would have permitted.Chapter One, adapted from a ... • Outsiders: The Humanity and Inhumanity of Giants in Medieval French Prose
           Romance by Sylvia Huot (review)
    • Abstract: Sylvia Huot, in her recent publication Outsiders: The Humanity and Inhumanity of Giants in Medieval French Prose Romance, expansively considers the depiction of giants in medieval French Arthurian literature. Her use of modern theories of class and race, terrorism, and colonialism sheds new light on a subject earlier treated by scholars such as Jeffrey Jerome Cohen and Michael Uebel, whose work she skillfully builds upon.Huot couches her analysis of the appearance of giants in medieval literature in a variety of literary sources and theories. Her many examples are drawn from a broad range of texts ranging from Arthurian romans to chansons de geste. Included in the array are Chrétien de Troyes's Erec et Enide and ... Read More

  • Stone: An Ecology of the Inhuman by Jeffrey Jerome Cohen (review)
    • Abstract: Jeffrey Jerome Cohen in the introduction to his poetic and breathtakingly sweeping book (winner of the 2017 René Wellek Prize for best book in comparative literature from the American Comparative Literature Association) describes how his love affair with the lithic began in childhood playing at a glacial erratic known as Big Rock: 'For friends and siblings I wove an elaborate mythology around Big Rock, tales of how its enduring solidity entangled distant pasts with far futures' (p. 17). Years later as a Harvard-trained medievalist, from his professorship at George Washington University inspiring an insurgent movement in medieval studies that follows the 'material turn' of theoretical approaches, Cohen has continued ... • Troilus and Criseyde by Geoffrey Chaucer, ed. by James M. Dean and Harriet
           Spiegel (review)
    • Abstract: When I first started teaching medieval literature at the university level, there were no adequate teaching editions of Chaucer's great, yet difficult poem Troilus and Criseyde. It is experientially hard for the 'yonge, fresshe folks, he or she' addressed in the poem's envoi to gain access to it except through feats of the sympathetic imagination. Before we even get there, though, both the poem's language and its imbrication in an increasingly inaccessible literary tradition daunt the fresh young contemporary readers of Middle English. Unlike the Canterbury Tales, for the Troilus there has been little in the way of pedagogical materials that would help bridge the gap between the poem's demands and the skills and ... Read More
