    • Abstract: On my 21st birthday as I sat in the family kitchen wolfing down breakfast before preparing for the daily commute to college my mother asked, "so you are 21, do you feel any different?" My answer then was no. I tend, people close to me have told me—including my mother—not to dwell on moments of importance. That was the case that February 9, when I was not thinking of turning 21, but only about what I had to do that day on campus. With this issue, the Arizona Journal of Hispanic Cultural Studies turns 20 a symbolic milestone of its own and I thought I would break with my propensity to blow past important dates to reflect on what that means. Helping shepherd a small academic journal through these 20 years of tumult in ... Read More

  • About The Artist: María José Jara de Marco
    • Abstract: María José Jara de Marco is a Paraguayan cartoonist currently known for her work as the creator of the comic strip, Anita Dice. Anita is a young woman who makes critical observations about her life and context in a manner some might compare to Quino's Argentine Mafalda.Anita stands out as the notably female, critical viewpoint of a markedly different, younger generation, bringing everything about her world into question. The 35-year-long dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner, (1954-1989), rewarded conformity and discouraged critical thought. As in the case of Mafalda, perhaps it is easier for a post-dictatorial society to accept—or at least feel less threatened by—certain kinds of critiques when they are delivered ... Read More

  • Mapping Chinatown in 1920s and 1930s Barcelona: How el Raval Became el
           Barrio Chino
    • Abstract: Barcelona's Barrio Chino, a historically working-class neighborhood, has witnessed the many transformations of Barcelona's urban space and political and social life. El Barrio Chino is a socially marginal, yet geographically central district that represents a space of ethnic, cultural and demographic diversity that, over the course of many decades, has supported Barcelona's self-proclamation as Spain's most "cosmopolitan" city. El Raval was first referred to as el Barrio Chino in the inaugural edition of the sensationalist weekly periodical El Escándalo in 1925. The magazine's co-founder and regular contributor Francisco Madrid repurposed the term as a way of characterizing the exotic allure of Barcelona's "barrios ... Read More

  • Nuptials Gone Awry, Empire in Decay: Crisis, Lo Cursi, and the Rhetorical
Inventory of Blackness in Quevedo's "Boda de negros"
    • Abstract: Francisco de Quevedo y Villegas's romance "Boda de negros" (1643) is a mise-en-scène of people playing with customs out of their reach.1 The poem inventories a surplus of ornate inanimate objects, foodstuffs, and other material goods employed to describe that which is animate and living: a group of black Africans celebrating a wedding on the steps of the San Pedro el Viejo Church in Madrid. The critical reception bestowed on Quevedo's poetic representation of these Africans has caught the attention of a wide array of Hispanists and Latin Americanists from diverse historical and literary backgrounds. Within the past thirty years, readings of "Boda de negros" have remained diametrically opposed in intellectual focus ... Read More

  • From Afterlife to Afterimage: History Happens with Photography
    • Abstract: The conjunction of death and the photographed is in fact the very principle of photographic certitude: the photograph is a cemetery. A small funerary monument, the photograph is a grave for the living dead. It tells their history—a history of ghosts and shadows—and it does so because it is this history. The photograph—as what is never itself and therefore always passing into history—asks us to think the remains of what cannot come under the present. In "Life and Death," a beautiful essay accompanying an exhibit shown at Japan's Izu Photo Museum, Geoffrey Batchen asks how we might understand our desire to go back to photographs even (and perhaps especially) when they disturb our sense of being in the world. Because ... Read More

  • Fragmented Histories, Racial Erasures, and Color-Blindness in Héctor
           Tobar's The Barbarian Nurseries
    • Abstract: Héctor Tobar's novel The Barbarian Nurseries (2011) plays on the quixotic. Eleven year-old Brandon, for instance, is a voracious reader, but bad at telling the differences between fiction, history, and reality. At different points in the novel, the narrator shows how Brandon interprets his travels around modern-day Los Angeles through the lens of the novels and history books he has read but not fully understood. For example, Brandon determines that a young boy who cooks dinner and does other chores for his unofficial foster family must be a slave (192). He concludes that the large graffiti letters that cover the sides of building must have been painted by "a giant with a paint can" (165). And he decides that a ... Read More

• A Hair Out of Paralyzed-Place: Frida Kahlo's Metaphoric Choreography
    • Abstract: Kahlo, Frida. Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair. 1940 © 2016 Artists Rights Society. In Choreographing Empathy (2011), dance scholar Susan Foster defines choreography as "a referent for a structuring of movement" (2), which dictates mobility by shaping space. She explains that by[d]esignating minute aspects of movement, or alternatively, sketching out the broad contours of action within which variation might occur, choreography constitutes a plan or score according to which movement unfolds. Buildings choreograph space and people's movement through them; cameras choreograph cinematic action. In Self Portrait with Cropped Hair (1940), Frida Kahlo paints her own score of spatial constraints that appear to inhibit ...
... Read More

  • Affect, Bodies, and Circulations in Contemporary Latin American Film
    • Abstract: The "affective turn," or a critical focus on emotion and affect as a gateway into understanding contexts and sites of experience, has come into vogue in the early twenty-first-century. Eugenie Brinkema's rhetorical "[i]s there any remaining doubt that we are now fully within the Episteme of the Affect?" (xi) punctuates this turn, though Brinkema will argue that it is indeed a plurality of turns that categorizes this shift. Whatever the case may be, these turns or lines of inquiry are oppositional to the hegemony of representation that has tended to guide critical explorations in the humanities and social sciences. Cinema Studies is an example of a field that has undergone this shift, as scholars, following Gilles ... Read More

  • Neoliberalismo somático: Sentimientos y afectos en Malos hábitos
    • Abstract: If our ancestors could see the gesticulating cadavers of contemporary fashion magazines they would probably interpret them as a memento mori, a reminder of death, equivalent, perhaps, to the danses macabres on the walls of late medieval churches. If we could tell them that, to us, these disarticulated skeletons signify pleasure, happiness, luxury, success, they would probably flee in panic, thinking that we are possessed by a particulary nasty devil. Read More

  • Money, Love, and Flow in Twenty-First-Century Latin American Film:
Understanding Affective Epistemological Capture as the Cultural Black
           Matter of Neoliberal Immanence
    • Abstract: In a cultural moment marked by the so-called marea rosa—the unexpected return of leftism in Latin America—there is an equally unexpected capitulation with the free market by the so-called Left. In Argentina, the centrist Cristina Kirchner is accused of neocolonial complicity for opening her country to the twenty-first-century pillage of soy and gold.1 While it may not be an altogether surprising turn of events that leftism in a former crown jewel of informal British imperialism should wax market-friendly and extraction-happy, it is perhaps somewhat more surprising to hear that Bolivia's radical Evo Morales has resorted to the use of police repression in defense of his plans to grow the economy. • Low-Intensity Necropolitics: Slow Violence and Migrant Bodies in Latin
           American Films
    • Abstract: Imagining politics as a form of war, we must ask: What place is given to life, death, and the human body (in particular the wounded or slain body)? How are they inscribed in the order of power?Current representations of the bodies of migrants in film are haunted by a muted and poignant contradiction. Migrants as a group have been perhaps the most influential contributors to the development of cinema not only as distributors, producers, and providers of narrative material for movies, but also as developers of the film industry, and, crucially important, as consumers of films. Yet, when representing migration narratives, films in general and inter-American migration films in particular, exhibit a recurrent affective ... Read More

  • The Aesthetics of Detachment
    • Abstract: In reconceptualizing the relationship between affect and politics, my inventory of contemporary Latin American cinemas in The Politics of Affect and Emotion (2011) privileged certain filmic tendencies that share intense or visceral appeals. Left out of that account was a very noticeable group of recent films that might, at first glance, be characterized as "affect-less," including the works of directors who have been celebrated for their minimalist aesthetics (such as Lisandro Alonso, Carlos Reygadas, and Amat Escalante). Quite successful as festival films within and outside of the region, they are often framed in relation to "slow cinema" aesthetics associated with European auteurs.1 These are useful comparisons ... Chapter 71 of Julio Cortázar's Rayuela contemplates nostalgia by considering our yearning for the afterlife; according to this chapter, the longing for utopia is based in a desire for remembered ideals. ...            Superhero Genre
    • Abstract: In the past fifteen years, superhero films based on comic book characters have grossed some of the highest ticket sales in the U.S. and worldwide box offices. As Martin Zeller-Jacques points out, since the turn of the Millennium, Hollywood-produced superhero movies have dominated US and global box offices. This cycle of films, beginning with X-Men (Brian Singer, 2000) and continuing to the present day, has provided three of the ten highest grossing films of all time … [and] earned a new cultural respectability for superheroes.Peter Coogan goes on to affirm that "the superhero is the current golden boy of Hollywood" (1). In many Latin American markets, Hollywood action films, many of which are of the superhero genre ... Read More

latinoamericana contemporánea by Oswaldo Zavala (review)
Read More

  • Science Fiction in Argentina: Technologies of the Text in a Material
           Multiverse by Joanna Page (review)
En Science Fiction in Argentina.
           Oswaldo Estrada (review)
    • Abstract: The disquieting and persevering occurrence of violent acts in our contemporary world calls for volumes such as Senderos de violencia: Latinoamérica y sus narrativas armadas, so that, unlike the local societies described in it, we do not look away from problems that affect all of us. The questions posed by its editor, Oswaldo Estrada, is how violence can be narrated and, more importantly, how its cultural representation can go "más allá" (15). This question is also addressed, at a second level, to academia itself. In this sense, in most articles, there is a serious attempt, on the one hand, to denounce the political forces' responsibility in the crimes committed and, on the other hand, to look into the "subjective" ...            del Pozo (review)
Read More

(1808-1928) by Felipe Martínez Pinzón (review)
           Candelas Gala (review)
    • Abstract: With Sinergias: Poesía, física y pintura en la España del siglo XX—a translation of Poetry, Physics, and Painting in Twentieth-Century Spain (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011)—Candelas Gala adds new and exciting dimensions to our reading of Spanish poetry of the 1920s and 30s. By examining selected works of seven poets of this era through the lens of science and the visual arts, the author illuminates aspects of canonical and lesser-known texts and integrates them into a larger cultural context. These poets were highly attuned to and informed of scientific theories and discoveries of the time, including Einstein's theory of relativity, field theory, electromagnetism, the fourth dimension, x-rays, light, and aspects of ...
del presente ed. by Palmar Álvarez-Blanco, Antonio Gómez L-Quiñones
           (review)
Read More

  • Up Against the Wall: Re-Imagining the U.S.-Mexico Border by Edward S.
           Casey and Mary Watkins (review)
    • Abstract: Central to President-Elect Donald Trump's platform is building a wall on the Mexico-U.S. border and holding Mexico responsible for the expenses. Although a wall already exists on many parts of the border due to the Secure Fence Act of 2006, the wall was never completed due to a lack of funding. Nevertheless, people crossing from Mexico into the U.S. are still policed by border patrol and drone surveillance. In addition, during the Obama administration over two million people were deported, more than ever in the history of the U.S. Reflecting nativist anxieties across the nation, the prospect of fortifying the wall clearly appealed to many voters. Edward S. Casey's and Mary Watkins' book Up Against the Wall: ... Read More

• After Human Rights: Literature, Visual Arts, and Film in Latin America,
1990-2010 by Fernando J. Rosenberg (review)
    • Abstract: Existen cuestiones inaplazables, problemas básicos, asuntos fundamentales. Fernando J. • Cultural Code: Video Games and Latin America by Phillip Penix-Tadsen
           (review)
• Figurative Inquisitions: Conversion, Torture, and Truth in the
Luso-Hispanic Atlantic by Erin Graff Zivin (review)
    • Abstract: Reading Erin Graff Zivin's thought-provoking book, Figurative Inquisitions, made me recall my own ghosts from the past: teaching Elaine Scarry's The Body in Pain, Edward Peter's Torture (from the same year, 1985), and of course Foucault's Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison, the inspiration of much of the discussion of the topic at the time. And who can forget Foucault's description of Damiens, the "regicide's" torture and execution on the second of March of 1757, a horrific public event that went on for hours when the horses were unable to finish the job of drawing and quartering Damiens, and his limbs had to be hacked off at the sinews one by one. • They Call Me Supermensch by Shep Gordon (review)
    • Abstract: Shep Gordon, one of the most famous talent managers, invites us to explore his intense life from a very humble perspective, sharing his vivid memoirs in his book: They Call Me Supermensch. Paradoxically, he introduces us to his life from his nearing death experience after briefly sharing the LA trip, where he met Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, that would change his life. Starting with a beautiful description of his childhood modest home, and family back in Queens, New York, Shep retrospects his life journey to entertain us with anecdotes such as hosting, meeting, and cooking for the Dalai Lama, whose honorable acts reminded him—to a certain extend—to his own father, "a man who kept his word" (225). However, these ... Read More
