Read More

  • About The Artist: Marcos Ramírez ERRE and David Taylor
    • Abstract: In 2004, David Taylor, an Arizona-based artist and professor, and Marcos Ramírez ERRE, a Tijuana-based artist, teamed up to create 47 obelisks reminiscent of the original 276 monuments that marked the border after the Mexican-American war, but sought to erect them strategically, outlining, in this manner, the pre-war border. DeLIMITations: A Survey of the 1821 United States Mexico Border, involved creating 47 sheet metal markers—intentionally designed to be rugged enough, but transportable—and going on an epic road trip to erect them along the historical border that stretches from the current day Oregon/California state line to the Gulf of Mexico just west of Louisiana. The 1821 border had never been surveyed or ... Read More

  • Investigating a Local Response to a Global Crisis in Julio Muñoz Gijón's
           El asesino de la regañá
    • Abstract: Viewing Spain these days as a national entity requires a bit of focus, especially nearly a decade removed from the start of the 2008 economic crisis. Spain has become increasingly globalized and fluid, both in economic flows of capital and in movement of people. Spaniards move abroad to find work, echoing previous generations setting out for Germany, Belgium, or Switzerland with the promise of someday coming back. The Spanish economy cannot be discussed without key European players and buzzwords like Eurozone, Troika, IMF, Brexit, or PIGS. Immigrants in Spain make up an ever-increasing visible presence despite financial hardship. Sure, Spain is different, as they say, but now this difference is manifested in the ... Read More

  • Speed Control: The Politics of Mobility in Roberto Bolaño's 2666 and its
           Theatrical Adaptation by Àlex Rigola
    • Abstract: We are in the epoch of simultaneity: we are in the epoch of juxtaposition, the epoch of near and far, of the side-by-side, of the dispersed. We are at the moment, I believe, when our experience of the world is less than that of a long life developing through time than that of a network that connects points that intersect within its own skin. (22)Contemporary transnational narratives often connect stories that take place in disparate locations, across time and amidst groups of seemingly unrelated protagonists. Indeed, twenty-first century artistic production often makes visible the complex networks and interfaces in which our lives play out. If we follow Foucault's argument that modern life is less about progressing ... Read More

Read More

Read More

Read More

  • Introducción. En el laberinto del populismo. Algunas claves
Read More

  • Crowd Control: Populism, Public Assembly, Institutional Crises, and Pere
Portabella's Informe general II. El nuevo rapto de Europa
    • Abstract: Like dozens of documentary films produced since the financial crash of 2008,1 Pere Portabella's Informe general II: el nuevo rapto de Europa (2015) tracks the influence of populist mobilizations in (post-) crisis Spain, juxtaposing the enthusiasm and ferocity of street protests with the complications of transferring those same energies into the world of institutional politics. Impelled by the "incisión performativa" generated by the 15-M Movement, these documentaries grapple with "un corte en la relación entre pasado y presente" (Marsh, "¡No nos representan!"), reflecting upon the political legacy of the Régimen de 1978 and the possibility of "otro ciclo político" in contemporary Spain (Errejón and Mouffe 22). As a ... Read More

  • Populism, Postimperialism, and the Politics of Affect in Spain. On Ocho
apellidos vascos, Pablo Iglesias, Belén Esteban, Laclau, and the 15M
    • Abstract: Before the economic crisis that began in 2008, the two most important foes or Others that articulated the so-called equivalential chain (Laclau, Hegemony) of Spain's two-party political system and its hegemony were terrorism and migration. Basque terrorism was engrossed by Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups in the aftermath of the Madrid bombings of 2004, while global migration, mainly represented as a Maghrebian or Moroccan Others, revived the old imperialist category of "moro," as in the tragic events of El Ejido in 2000. These two Others supported the political fantasy of a successful historical and political evolution from Franco's dictatorship to democracy in Spain, where the main referent was northern Europe as an ... • Populism without the People: The Cultural Politics of the Junta de
           Andalucía
    • Abstract: Populism has recently become an umbrella for radicalism, extremism, even disease in Spanish politics. A negative label verging on insult, it has been hurled from left and right at Podemos, a party founded in 2014 to represent the downtrodden by Spain's elites, be they the corrupt political leaders in thrall to the troika (European Commission, International Monetary Fund, and European Central Bank) or the immoral executives of bailed-out banks. Socialist presidential candidate Pedro Sánchez closed his electoral campaign in June 2016 asking voters to "vacunar a España contra el populismo." Standing next to him, fellow socialist Susana Díaz, currently Andalusia's premier, said that a vote for Podemos would be a vote ... Read More

    • Abstract: Alarmante es la palabra Revolución. Modern democracy invites us to replace the notion of a regime governed by laws, of a legitimate power, by the notion of a regime founded upon the legitimacy of a debate as to what is legitimate and what is illegitimate—a debate which is necessarily without any guarantor and without any end. • Podemos and the Ideals of Populist Proceduralism
    • Abstract: When encampments in Madrid's Puerta del Sol and plazas across Spain in the summer of 2011 chanted "¡No nos representan!" their speech instantly became a powerful political claim. For many participants and spectators alike, that claim was as much an indictment of Spain's political elites as it was a description of their own reality. That reality included a sky-high official unemployment rate of 21 percent, reaching nearly 45 percent for people under 25, which many of the protesters were, and a further erosion of the welfare state, thanks, in large part, to the handling of the Great Recession—la crisis, as it is known in Spain—by the government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Yet for many outside observers, "¡No nos ... Read More

Read More

  • Cannibal Metaphysics by Eduardo Viveiros de Castro, and: The Relative
Native: Essays on Indigenous Conceptual Worlds by Eduardo Viveiros de
           Castro (review)
    • Abstract: Though it is perhaps hard to imagine, especially in light of the way we today view the study of anthropology, Kant's most popular course was not his course on metaphysics, but rather his course on "anthropology." And it was only after thirty years of teaching it, when the vicissitudes of old age began to make teaching difficult, that Kant agreed (in 1797) to publish his lecture notes under the title of Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View. Interestingly, nearly a century and a half later, we have Foucault's 1961 doctoral thesis, Introduction to Kant's Anthropology: from the perspective of structuralist anthropology and its relation to the human sciences. I mention this only to remind the reader, supposing ... Read More

Read More

  • New Maricón Cinema: Outing Latin American Film by Vinodh Venkatesh
           (review)
Read More

  • El Eternauta, Daytripper, and Beyond. Graphic Narrative in Argentina and
Brazil by David William Foster (review)
Read More
