  • In This Issue
    • Abstract: Cultural Studies has multiple discourses; it has a number of different histories. It is a whole set of formations; it has its own different conjunctures and moments in the past. It included many different kinds of work. I want to insist on that! It always was a set of unstable formations. It was ‘centered’ only in quotation marks.1The recent death of Stuart Hall has forced many of us engaged in Cultural Studies over the years to take a moment to reflect on his work and legacy. Hall’s particular way of weaving together ideas from literary studies, anthropology, sociology and media studies provided useful models for how to connect culture, power and politics. I would venture to say that most people engaged in ... Read More

• Efún: “White Love” and Modernity in Guinea
    • Abstract: The image of Africa occupied a significant space in the imaginary of the Franco regime, as it was intimately connected with the rhetoric that aimed to recuperate the imperial past and the “correct” history of Spain. Official discourse portrayed the Spanish people as uniquely suited to colonizing Africa, claiming a lack of racism on the part of Spaniards, as well as a benevolent desire to convert the natives to Catholicism. Franco, in a speech given on June 3, 1961, proclaimed:No puede confundirse la noble empresa de colonización, la elevada tarea de alumbrar pueblos nuevos, entregándoles generosamente—en una verdadera transmutación espiritual—toda la propia herencia de cultura, con este concepto peyorativo y ... • Seventeenth Century Environmental Criticism, the Taqui Onqoy and Garcilaso
           de la Vega’s Comentarios reales
    • Abstract: In 1980, a contaminated piece of fruit brought from Europe cost the state of California and the federal government approximately $100 million in order to contain and eliminate a fly outbreak.1 Subsequently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention established stricter policies to keep unsafe items from entering the United States (CBP.gov).2 The fly outbreak illustrates the impact that environmental issues have upon the policies and expenses of border protection. Such an event also reminds us that even the tiniest living beings can alter the development of people and their ecosystems. Historically, the increased circulation of plants and animals has meant more food ... Read More

  • Still Life/Mexican Death: Mennonites in Visual Culture
    • Abstract: Mennonites in Mexico are often associated with cheese and with the film Stellet Licht (Luz silenciosa).1 This association is partially based on historical and contemporary facts, since these Mennonites do sell cheese called queso menonita and were featured in the film.2 They also do more than star in films and wear overalls. They moved to Mexico from Canada in the 1920s, when the Canadian government was infringing on their religious freedoms by insisting that they send their children to English language public schools. The Mexican government gave them large blocks of land to purchase and the educational freedoms they desired. Today, they number approximately 80,000 in Mexico, 65,000 in Bolivia, 25,000 in Belize ... • Speculative Ruins: Photographic Interrogations of the Spanish Economic
           Crisis
    • Abstract: The ongoing Spanish economic crisis, which began with the collapse of the housing bubble in 2008, has changed the literal and symbolic landscape of Spain, producing imaginary, uninhabited cities and ruins without memories. A May 2014 Human Rights Watch report noted that “in 2011, almost 3.5 million residences—or 13.7 percent of the total housing stock—stood empty, largely due to over-construction” (Sunderland 14). Yet, despite the fact that Spain is currently littered with unsightly, dangerous and in many cases utterly unusable residential sites, such projects have received fairly minor treatment when viewed alongside other more pressing concerns such as evictions, the high unemployment rate and youth emigration.1 ...
Read More

Read More

• The Pedagogy of Degrowth: Teaching Hispanic Studies in the Age of Social
           Inequality and Ecological Collapse
    • Abstract: “Si no es divertido no es sostenible.”[If it’s not fun, it’s not sustainable]Transforming education is crucial to generating a society able to deal with the complex socioenvironmental challenges of the Anthropocene. We are immersed in a socially and environmentally unsustainable globalizing system that promotes a teleological conception of progress based on relentless competition, capital accumulation, over-consumption, energy depletion, and debt-driven economic growth. Neoliberal globalization generates and exacerbates the present ecological crisis. The ongoing economic and ecological crises are interconnected, because when the hegemonic economic system grows, it depletes the environment and when it does not grow ... Read More

  • Representing Everyday Life
    • Abstract: In December 2012 at the UCF I organized a Giornata di Studio (one-day workshop) on “Explorations of Everyday Life.” A selection of the papers delivered at that meeting is the core of this special section in AJHCS. “Explorations of Everyday Life” puts together a group of scholars that are interested in addressing everyday life from different perspectives. How is the everyday experienced within a Catalan/ Spanish context? Are there particular experiences that achieve a specific and unique representation or theoretical response in art, film or literature? Other research questions included: how and to what extent issues of identity, space, historical memory and immigration, have affected everyday life in Spain, and how ... Read More

           Quijote
    • Abstract: El ser humano nace indigente. Read More

  • The Guide for Guides: Carles Soldevila’s L’art
           d’ensenyar Barcelona (1929)
    • Abstract: Carles Soldevila’s ingenious and cheerful L’art d’ensenyar Barcelona (The Art of Showing Barcelona) (1929) stands as a unique “guide for guides” amongst what was, by the end of the 1920s, a growing collection of travel books aimed at visitors to the Catalan capital. By focusing however, not on the needs of tourists, business travellers or pilgrims but rather on the specific necessities of those residents who receive foreign visitors, Soldevila (1892-1967) provides a text that contributes to both the diversification of travel literature at the time and, by extension, our understanding of how the increasingly cosmopolitan elite of Barcelona saw their city and were encouraged to look at it. In this essay, I argue that ... Read More

Read More

  • Pools, Automobiles, and Maids: Life in Barcelona During the ‘60s in Joan
           Capri’s Monologues
    • Abstract: Joan Capri (stage name of Joan Camprubí i Alemany) was a hugely popular and talented actor. His comedies were mainly performed at the Romea theatre and many of them were written specifically for him by experienced authors; however, he was best known for his monologues. This genre was explored by other actors as well, but it was Capri who transformed it in as many manifestos of his philosophy of everyday life, sometimes with an ironic or even sarcastic tone, others with a more aloof when not cynical one. An approach that many in Catalonia have tried to emulate through monologue. Most of Capri’s monologues, approximately forty, reissued several times, are now available online, but were recorded originally on vinyl by ... Read More

    • Abstract: “Le quotidien: ce qu’il y a de plus difficile à découvrir.”In the final pages of Jeffrey Eugenides’ novel The Virgin Suicides the narrator tries to solve the puzzle of the four Lisbon girls’ death:In the end we had the pieces of the puzzle, but no matter how we put them together, gaps remained, oddly shaped emptinesses mapped by what surrounded them, like countries we couldn’t name…. What lingered after them was not life, which always overcomes natural death, but the most trivial list of mundane facts: a clock ticking on a wall, a room dim at noon, and the outrageousness of a human being thinking only of herself. The sense of emptiness described in the paragraph brings forth both the puzzling mystery of the gaps of ... • Understanding Juan Benet: New Perspectives by Benjamin Fraser (review)
    • Abstract: One might be excused for thinking Ben Fraser has tilted at windmills with his latest contribution, which sets out to help readers make sense of the writings of Juan Benet by attempting to combine civil engineering, Bergsonian philosophy, and cultural geography into a coherent explanatory framework. To the skeptic, such an amalgamation of seemingly disparate subject matters may smack of scholarly alchemy, conveniently combining in a single monograph recent intellectual issues that grace the pages of Fraser’s previous publications, which are legion. And yet, much like Cervantes’s anachronistic knight, Fraser deserves praise for gaining much where much has been ventured. If the world of Benet is as “dazzlingly complex” ... Read More

  • Jewish Spain: A Mediterranean Memory by Tabea Alexa Linhard (review)
    • Abstract: The Hebrew term Sepharad, meaning Spain, has a profound meaning among a substantial part of the world Jewry. The concept is first mentioned as a geographical reference in the Hebrew Bible and has since taken on a strong poetic and symbolic meaning throughout centuries. Some scholars have argued that the name concept suggests the colonization of the Iberian Peninsula by Jews after the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, which led to the Jewish obliged dispersion (galut) to various parts of Europe. Although a “Jewish Spain” never existed, the Sephardim—Jews of Spanish and Portuguese origin—formed a rich and diverse community that spread among the Christian kingdoms of Iberia until their forced exile in 1492. ... • Thinking Barcelona: Ideologies of a Global City by Edgar Illas (review)
    • Abstract: In Thinking Barcelona, Edgar Illas sets his sights on exploring “the ideological constructs that accompanied the conversion of Barcelona into a global city” (2). In the Introduction, he builds on and carefully distinguishes his contribution from work by Joan Roca i Albert, Mari Paz Balibrea, Joan Ramon Resina, Donald McNeill and Manuel Delgado Ruiz, all the while disentagling oversimplifications of Marxism and referencing the likes of Althusser, Harvey, Jameson, Rancière, and Negri. From these opening pages the reader may correctly surmise that Illas wants to interrogate each term in his book’s title: not just “Barcelona,” then, but also the part about “Thinking.” What results is an ambitious work with a ... • Abstract: Trained as a generalist with a specialization in Spanish peninsular literature, film and cultural studies, the first article I came across by Julie Avril Minich, “Life on Wheels,” was seemingly also her very first publication. This was a fascinating 2010 essay in the Journal of Literary and Cultural Disability Studies, on two Spanish films that were positioned to attract international attention: Pedro Almodóvar’s Live Flesh [Carne Trémula] (1997), adapted from a book by Ruth Rendell, and Alejandro Amenábar’s The Sea Inside [Mar adentro] (2004), adapted from the life of Ramón Sampedro.
           Txetxu Aguado (review)
    • Abstract: In the first two sentences of Tiempos de ausencias y vacíos, Txetxu Aguado asks and answers the question that could easily undermine his entire study: “¿Produce cansancio la temática sobre la memoria y la identidad? Es inevitable afirmarlo” (11). With this in mind, one might reasonably ask, why write a book that seems to have been written many times before? Aguado is prepared with a rejoinder, of course, in which he lays out his plan as well as his justification. The book seeks difference, he argues, through the exploration of alternative memories and identities which have been confounded and often silenced by the traditional infrastructure of power in Spain. Aguado does not lay out explicitly how this authority ... Read More

    • Abstract: On February 23, 1981, when Colonel Antonio Tejero and a band of armed men stormed Spanish parliament and sought to instigate a rebellion against the democratically elected government, the future of Spain stood near the precipice of the past. Nearly three and a half decades later, however, the question that comes to mind pertains not so much to what actually happened during the two days of the takeover of Parliament (much is known about the facts of the incident) but rather what did it mean to the fledgling democracy still seeking to define its identity and affirm its legitimacy. As Francisca López and Enric Castelló remind us in Cartografías del 23-F, the traditional story of F-23 has generally been seen as a ... Read More

Read More

mexicana contemporánea by Oswaldo Estrada (review)
• Spanish Cinema in the Global Context: Film on Film by Samuel Amago
           (review)
    • Abstract: A reflexive aesthetics, in varying levels and with wide-ranging functions, Samuel Amago insists, has permeated the narrative style of contemporary international moviemaking. Amago’s monograph, the twenty-sixth installment of the Routledge Advances in Film Studies series first launched in 2008, offers an engaging study of contemporary self-reflexive Spanish cinema and how the country’s place within the global mediascape can be understood by a close analysis of the function of reflexive aesthetics. The subject matter of Amago’s book attests to film scholars’ growing attention to Spanish film production and confirms that Spain still provides an effective model “for looking at the productive interplay between globally ... • Abstract: At the end of chapter six of her book The Golden Leaf: How Tobacco Shaped Cuba and the Atlantic World, Charlotte Cosner describes Seville’s Real Fábrica de Tabaco in exacting detail. After noting how many women and men (and horses) worked in the process of pulverizing, rolling and casing Cuban tobacco leaves into cigars, she mentions that in the central hall of this building, “[i]n the form of two paintings by Francisco de Goya, rendered at a cost of four thousand reales, His Royal Highness King Carlos IV and his queen, María Luisa de Parma, watcher over the [Seville’s] factory’s daily activities” (132). • Abstract: Screening Minors in Latin American Cinema, edited by Carolina Rocha and Georgia Seminet (Lexington Books, 2014) is history in the making, literally. The volume is a first in the fast-evolving field of youth subjectivities in Latin American cinema, as well as a successful attempt to historicize Latin American subjectivity processes as expressed through the voice and point of view of the children and adolescents depicted in the cinema of the region. The editors’ previous volume, Representing History, Class, and Gender in Spain and Latin America: Children and Adolescents in Film (Rocha & Seminet, NY: Palgrave, 2012) surveyed and analyzed the vast portrayal of minors in the Hispanic world, and how the preadolescent and ...
