  • Editors’ Note
    • Abstract: In this spring 2017 issue, we bring you an exciting and eclectic mix of articles designed to mirror nature’s own effusion of blossoming flowers. The issue features a new Forum contribution on feminist recovery and periodical studies; a stimulating digital humanities article on newspaper poetry (re)circulation; a pedagogy primer focused on historical images; an exciting In the Archive submission featuring two newly recovered short stories by Paul Laurence Dunbar; an article on 1790s pamphlets and the press; and, of course, our book reviews.Following the launch of the new Forum feature in volume 26, issue 1 (spring 2016) with a roundtable discussion of digital approaches to periodical studies, we dedicate our second ... • Forum: Recovering Women’s Writing through the Periodical Archive
    • Abstract: This forum was sparked by a series of presentations given at the 2015 Society for the Study of American Women Writers (SSAWW) Conference that addressed feminist recovery research and periodical archives. The contributors extend the conversations begun at SSAWW by taking up the question of why periodicals remain a rich but often underappreciated and difficult-to-access archive for the recovery of American women’s writing. How has the periodical archive shaped the literary history of American women’s writing? Which voices remain the most challenging to recover, and why? How has digitization changed recovery research, and what gaps does the digitized record reinscribe? How do the labor issues and structural ... Read More

  • Recovery and Modern Periodical Studies
    • Abstract: At the 2015 Society for the Study of American Women Writers (SSAWW) Conference, I participated in a number of conversations about the state of the field of scholarship on American women writers, and particularly the state of recovery as both a material and an intellectual scholarly practice. Allow me to sketch the two general trends of these conversations. On the one hand, we marveled at the ways that digitization has redefined the nature of archival research, making it possible to access and thereby recover a staggering number of texts by heretofore unknown or forgotten women writers. On the other hand, we agreed that recovery as it was originally defined in the 1980s and 1990s—when “recovery” was understood to ... Read More

  • Edith Eaton’s Expanding Oeuvre
    • Abstract: Since the early 1980s, when S. E. Solberg published a short checklist of twenty-two works of fiction and journalism by Chinese American author Sui Sin Far (Edith Eaton), our knowledge of her oeuvre has grown considerably. By 2007, through the efforts of Annette White-Parks and Amy Ling, as well as Dominika Ferens and Martha Cutter, Eaton’s oeuvre included about one hundred works of fiction, poetry, and journalism, many of which addressed the experiences of diasporic Chinese in North America. In the past ten years, I have discovered more than one hundred fifty texts by Eaton, some of which are collected in Becoming Sui Sin Far: Early Fiction, Journalism and Travel Writing by Edith Maude Eaton.1 Eaton’s expanded ... • Mining Boarding School Newspapers for Native American Women Editors and
           Writers
    • Abstract: “News-paper making isn’t play,” declared Ida Johnson, Lula Walker, and Arizona Jackson in their February 1880 editorial in the Hallaquah, a monthly published at the Seneca Indian School in Oklahoma.1 As this quote suggests, these three Native American schoolgirls took their editorial work with the Hallaquah seriously and sought to transform the boarding school press by offering their voices and critical perspectives.2 That three young women assumed roles as printers and editors of their school newspaper at a time when such positions were limited for women—and especially limited for Native American girls—is worthy of attention. Focusing on the Hallaquah, this essay demonstrates how students at the Seneca Indian ... Read More

  • Feminist Collaboration in an Era of Academic Instability
    • Abstract: Published in 1912, Miriam Michelson’s fantasy novella The Superwoman takes place on a remote island ruled by Amazonian women. Seen through the eyes of male protagonist Hugh Ellinwood Welburn, an accidental interloper, Michelson’s matriarchal society is “topsy-turvy.”1 Not only are men’s and women’s gender roles reversed, but the island women also practice polyandry; they judiciously choose male mates and then discard them once they have served their primary reproductive purpose (in this case, to provide the women with daughters). A trailblazing vision of a feminist utopia, The Superwoman predates, and likely inspired, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland, which was first serialized in 1915 in The Forerunner, Gilman’s ... • Recovering Kate Chopin’s “Her First Party”: Media,
           Mediation, Message
    • Abstract: Early in 2012, two of the three authors of this essay recovered the lost Kate Chopin short story “Her First Party” in the March 30, 1905, issue of Youth’s Companion.1 We accidentally stumbled on the text, which had been overlooked by researchers for more than a century, in the American Periodicals Series, a digitized database containing the American Periodicals Series I, II, and III on microfilm. Both media—digitized database and microfilm—include the nearly complete Companion’s 102-year run. Yet it was strange that we had failed to turn up the story before, especially since one of us had written a monograph devoted to Chopin’s Companion fiction.2 As we wrote in the introduction to the 2013 reprint edition, “The ... • Recovering Black Women Writers in Periodical Archives
    • Abstract: In the past thirty years, periodicals have proven to be indispensable for studying African American women writers. Scholars turn to periodicals both to reclaim writers once considered “lost” and to expand the bibliographies and biographies of better-known authors. Projects like the forty-volume Schomburg Library reprint series in the 1990s—one significant touchstone in the recovery of African American women writers—compiled works by nineteenth-century authors such as Pauline Hopkins, Oliva Ward Bush-Banks, and Amelia Johnson from various periodicals, making these texts accessible in compact, bound editions with distinctive blue covers. But by harvesting individual texts from newspapers and magazines, such projects ... Read More

  • “Fugitive Verses”: The Circulation of Poems in
           Nineteenth-Century American Newspapers
    • Abstract: The epigraph above is the first stanza of “The Children,” a largely forgotten nineteenth-century poem in which a schoolmaster muses at the end of the school day on the divinity he sees reflected in his pupils. “The Children” is not collected in The Norton Anthology of American Literature, but it was exceedingly popular in its day: anthologized in books of poetry; praised by critics, poets, and readers; and widely reprinted in newspapers and magazines. “The Children” was reprinted at least 171 times in American periodicals between September 22, 1864, and December 3, 1899, making it one of the most widely reprinted poems from the nineteenth century thus far discovered by the Viral Texts project at Northeastern ... • John Taylor of Caroline: Pamphlets and the Press in the 1790s
    • Abstract: Historians of the early US press tend to exaggerate the extent to which browsing in taverns, hotels, and other public places increased the number of newspaper readers and supposedly made newspapers more efficient vehicles for communicating political ideas than pamphlets. Because the essays comprising pamphlets frequently appeared first in newspapers, the alleged dichotomy that modern scholars posit between pamphlets and newspapers, with competing elites employing pamphlets as tools in “paper wars” while newspapers served the masses, requires reconsideration. The proliferation of pamphlets indicates that Americans were both more capable of reading dense works and more interested in understanding public events than ... Read More

  • A Primer for Using Historical Images in Research
    • Abstract: Visual documents can provide revealing windows into the beliefs, values, and anxieties of the past, but analyzing them presents challenges. I often hear concerns from beginning researchers who worry that their analyses rely too heavily on their own readings of images, which is shaped by their contemporary cultural and social orientation rather than on the perspectives of historical actors. To address this problem, I draw upon my own research practice and the work of leading visual-culture practitioners to elucidate a concrete methodological approach to analyzing historical images, providing different angles to reflect upon the significance of visual sources as well as key questions to guide historical research and ... • “Sue” and “A Southern Silhouette”: Two Published but Uncollected
Short Stories by Paul Laurence Dunbar
    • Abstract: These two previously published but uncollected short stories by Paul Laurence Dunbar are an important addition to his body of work, not only for their ability to flesh out his already extensive body of short fiction, but also because they offer specific insight into his development as an author. While each story was published at a different moment in his career, both connect to larger, often overlooked themes cutting across the entire range of his fictional output. As one of the editors of The Complete Stories of Paul Laurence Dunbar, I was surprised to find two new stories in the span of three weeks while doing online archival work on the publication history of Dunbar’s poetry. These discoveries point to the ... Read More

  • The American Revolution and the Press: The Promise of Independence by
           Carol Sue Humphrey (review)
    • Abstract: Carol Sue Humphrey presents a history of the imperial crisis and the American Revolution as those events were reported in newspapers of the period. Of the nine chapters (including the introduction and conclusion), six offer a detailed chronological examination of events in the two decades between the conclusion of the Seven Years War in 1763 and the peace treaty at the end of the Revolution in 1783. Each of these chapters includes an overview of political and military developments and their coverage in newspapers printed throughout the colonies. In addition, the first chapter explores the historiography of the role of the press in shaping the Revolution as it has been interpreted over the past two centuries. The ... Read More

  • Work Sights: The Visual Culture of Industry in Nineteenth-Century America
           by Vanessa Meikle Schulman (review)
    • Abstract: In Work Sights, Vanessa Meikle Schulman provides a generously illustrated analysis of images of industry circulating in both popular print culture and studio painting in the thirty-year period between 1857 and 1887. She argues that these images “were intended to manufacture a consensus about the roles of technology and industrial capitalism in the modern United States” (3). Schulman’s analysis relies predominantly on images circulating in popular monthly magazines and weekly newspapers like Harper’s Weekly, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, and Vanity Fair, particularly in the post–Civil War period. She limits the chronological scope of her study with two significant milestones: the 1857 launch of Harper’s ... Read More

  • The Newspaper Warrior: Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins’s Campaign for American
Indian Rights, 1864–1891 ed. by Cari M. Carpenter and Carolyn Sorisio
           (review)
    • Abstract: What is the impact of an edited collection of newspaper sources when digital newspaper archives are increasingly capacious? Edited by two highly respected scholars who have themselves published major critical analyses of Sarah Winnemucca as an activist, performer, and orator, The Newspaper Warrior: Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins’s Campaign for American Indian Rights, 1864–1891 demonstrates that such a book is still a welcome scholarly companion. The Newspaper Warrior covers events ranging from this important Native activist’s first public appearances to her death. The skillful editorial work of these two scholars should be detailed and praised, for the labor of preparing such a book is too often invisible. They have ... Read More

  • Power to the People: The Graphic Design of the Radical Press and the Rise
of the Counter-Culture, 1964–1974. ed. by Geoff Kaplan (review)
    • Abstract: It is appropriate that Geoff Kaplan’s visual history of the countercultural press should take 1964 as its starting point. That was the year Marshall McLuhan famously posited that “The medium is the message” in his groundbreaking book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. McLuhan advanced the idea that a medium’s material and symbolic form was coextensive with whatever message it sought to communicate. His dictum became particularly meaningful to the era’s emerging social movements. If mainstream media was, by definition, tied up with corporate and governmental interests, then the counterculture had to rely on new ways—that is, new media—to propagate their ideas. Thus, in the mid-1960s, groups that were ... Read More
