  • Editors' Note
    • Abstract: Another fall arrives, and with it the start of a new school year and a new issue of American Periodicals. And with the new school year, we are pleased to announce that beginning with issue 28.1, review editor Eric Gardner officially will become one of the journal's co-editors. Dr. Gardner will continue to serve as review editor while taking on additional duties designed to promote the journal and increase submissions. Here we offer an eclectic selection of essays, an "In the Archive" feature on Bay Area "Dadazines" and punk zines, a review essay envisioning future black periodicals scholarship, and a trio of book reviews. In an era where the role of the media in national life is in the spotlight, each of these ... Read More

  • Minding the Gaps in Serial Diary Fiction: The Case of "Susy L—'s
           Diary"
    • Abstract: Diaries are defined by gaps: temporal gaps between diary entries, gaps in background information, gaps produced by coded or obscured revelations, or gaps in language arising from idiosyncratic discourse comprehensible only to the diary's author. In the words of diary scholar Philippe Lejeune, the diary is discontinuous, allusive, redundant, repetitive, and nonnarrative in structure. These features constitute, Lejeune writes, the "exact opposite of literary communication."1 In its resistance to comprehensible communication, the diary declares its interiority and authenticity; diaries that are obviously designed to be accessible to an external reader are often perceived as fraudulent. The gaps that challenge the ... Read More

  • "We Can Not Publish What We Can Not Procure": Women Readers as Content
           Providers in Keramic Studio (1899–1924)
    • Abstract: At the end of the nineteenth century, the content of many American magazines was procured by an editor or editorial team. For cash-strapped practical art magazines, however, this approach created significant challenges. Compensating artists for their contributions required a significant outlay of capital, and printing images was costly no matter their size and quality. As a result, many practical art publications were short lived. One notable exception was Keramic Studio (1899–1924), which took a different approach to content procurement (Figure 1). Keramic Studio's editor, Adelaide Alsop Robineau, established mechanisms for readers, who were mostly female, to contribute their own designs to the magazine. Inverting ... Read More

  • The Journey from "Just Us" to Some "Justice": Ideology and Advocacy, the
New York Amsterdam News, and the Central Park Jogger Story
    • Abstract: On April 19, 1989, Trisha Meili went for a nighttime jog in New York's Central Park, where she was brutally beaten, raped, and left for dead. Though there were no witnesses or physical evidence to link them to the crime, five black and Latino teenagers—Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Kharey Wise—were arrested and interrogated. McCray, Salaam, and Santana were tried together in August 1990, and Richardson and Wise were tried together in December 1990. Each defendant was found guilty of myriad charges that included rape, attempted murder, assault, robbery, and riot. In 2002, after each of the convicted defendants had fully served his prison sentence and had attempted reentry into ... Read More

  • Bay Area Dadazines and Punk Zines in 1970s San Francisco: Interactive,
           Ephemeral, Live
    • Abstract: In the San Francisco countercultural scene of the 1970s, a group of artists calling themselves the Bay Area Dadaists put on performances and created zines—underground, amateur, small-circulation publications—dubbed "Dadazines." Titles included the New York Correspondence School Weekly Breeder (1972–73), Dogarithms (1973), West Bay Dadaist (later Quoz') (1974–75), and Vile (1974–77) (Figures 1 and 2).1 Around the same time, as punk bands began playing in the city, early enthusiasts produced some of the first punk zines: Psyclone (1976–77), Search and Destroy (1977–79), Punk Globe (1977–present), and Damage (1979–81), among others (Figures 3 and 4).2 For both groups, the zine was a cheap, quick means of expression ... • Visions of the Future in Nineteenth-Century Black Periodicals
    • Abstract: In the introduction to a 2015 special issue of American Periodicals devoted to "Black Periodical Studies," guest editors Eric Gardner and Joycelyn Moody insist that while recognizing that additional work in the field is "both possible and necessary," scholars meanwhile can "celebrate both the increasing quantity and the wondrous quality" of scholarship exploring black periodicals.1 Like the AP special issue, other recent developments have given both reason and occasion to celebrate black periodical studies. The Black Press Research Collective, a blog curated by scholars from several institutions, and a conference on "The Arts in the Black Press during the Age of Jim Crow," organized by Lucy Caplan and Kristen M. ... • Mark Twain, American Humorist by Tracy Wuster
    • Abstract: In their groundbreaking book Modernism in the Magazines: An Introduction (Yale University Press, 2010), Robert Scholes and Clifford Wulfman make a persuasive argument concerning Ezra Pound's centrality in advancing modernism in the little magazines, both as a regular contributor and frequent editor. Similarly, Tracy Wuster, in his elaborately researched Mark Twain: American Humorist, demonstrates the centrality of Mark Twain in the rapidly advancing print culture(s) and publishing networks of the Gilded Age. Covering the period from 1863 (the year Twain first used that nom de plume) to his emergence as America's leading humorist in the 1880s, Wuster's book explores a variety of topics and makes novel contributions ... • Becoming Sui Sin Far: Early Fiction, Journalism, and Travel Writing by
Edith Maude Eaton ed. by Mary Chapman
    • Abstract: Mary Chapman's Becoming Sui Sin Far: Early Fiction, Journalism, and Travel Writing by Edith Maude Eaton offers readers the most comprehensive glimpse so far of Sui Sin Far, the pen name of the writer best known for her Chinatown stories. Chapman's resourceful, sustained digging into periodicals has uncovered 150 previously unknown (often unsigned or pseudonymous) texts by Eaton, bringing her full oeuvre to over 260 works. Seventy-one texts are included in this collection; half are new discoveries. Through this collection and full bibliography, as well as an introduction that places Eaton's work in its broader scholarly context, Chapman has not only expanded our understanding of Eaton's writing, but also enabled ... • Raising Secular Jews: Yiddish Schools and Their Periodicals for American
Children, 1917–1950 by Naomi Prawer Kadar
    • Abstract: Publications for youth are driven by adult concerns, a truism that is demonstrated compellingly by Naomi Prawer Kadar's study of Yiddish language periodicals for children. The ostensible focus of this book—a highly specialized group of juvenile magazines in the first half of the twentieth century—necessarily gives way to the far broader topic of Jewish assimilation in the same period, as Yiddish educators debated how best to guide a new generation in the ways and means of a Jewish cultural worldview distinct from religious matters. While this study might initially appear somewhat esoteric, it has a great deal to offer scholars from a wide range of disciplines, including ethnic studies, sociology, education, and ... Read More
