  • Editor’s Overview
    • Abstract: Our first issue for 2017 offers groundbreaking explorations of the Mine Run campaign and the question of loyalty in Louisiana. Adam Petty analyzes the interaction between the environment and contending generals, armies, and soldiers during the Mine Run campaign. Conducted from November 26 to December 2, 1863, it produced few casualties and fewer results; thus, historians have neglected the campaign. An environmental analysis reveals an intriguing case study of how nature can influence strategy and act on armies and individuals, even as armies and individuals act upon the environment. This analysis also demonstrates Mine Run’s importance as a model for the subsequent Wilderness campaign and as a precedent for ... Read More

  • Wilderness, Weather, and Waging War in the Mine Run Campaign
    • Abstract: The Wilderness looms large in the history of the Civil War period. A region of thick forests, choked with undergrowth, and riddled with creeks, it could be a dreadful place even in more peaceful times. As it turned out, political, logistical, and military concerns seemed to conspire to draw the Union Army of the Potomac and the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia into that wild expanse just south of the Rapidan River. The two armies met in this dismal scenery three times. Their first engagement resulted in the dramatic but costly Confederate victory at Chancellorsville in May 1863. A year later, the armies met there again at the Battle of the Wilderness, fighting to a bloody stalemate even as the dry ... Read More

  • “Whenever the Yankees Were Gone, I Was a Confederate”: Loyalty and
Dissent in Civil War–Era Rapides Parish, Louisiana
    • Abstract: On April 8, 1864, in the midst of the Union’s Red River expedition, the New Orleans True Delta estimated that “several hundred” free residents of Rapides Parish, Louisiana, had signed oaths promising future loyalty to the United States. U.S. military records demonstrate that more than 330 free residents of Rapides had taken loyalty oaths by that date. Following military engagements at Mansfield on April 8 and Pleasant Hill the next day, the Union campaign, intended to capture Shreveport and enter Texas, soon ended in debacle. Union forces only held Alexandria, the parish seat of Rapides, from March 15 until May 13, 1864, yet at least 907 parish residents, of whom 664 were men, swore oaths, a number that ... Read More

  • Citizen-Officers: The Union and Confederate Volunteer Junior Officer Corps
in the American Civil War by Andrew S. Bledsoe (review)
    • Abstract: Historical and sociological studies of soldier motivation in wars of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries agree that the leadership of junior officers plays a significant role in the willingness of soldiers to fight and in their performance in battle. Although studies of Civil War soldiers abound, until now there has been no monograph that focuses exclusively on that conflict’s junior officer corps. Andrew Bledsoe’s Citizen-Officers provides a much-needed examination of the men who were the “sinews and tendons” of Civil War armies (71). Although most of his conclusions will not surprise scholars who are well versed in the sources and literature on soldiers and armies, no other book better captures the ... Read More

  • Confederate Cities: The Urban South during the Civil War ed. by Andrew W.
           Slap, Frank Towers (review)
    • Abstract: Given the sizable quantity of historical scholarship on the American Civil War, it is surprising that so few scholars over the years have focused their energies on the relationship between the war and the nation’s cities. Although it is often said of mature scholarly fields that additional works tend to fill “much needed gaps,” this is hardly the case with Confederate Cities, an important new collection of essays edited by Andrew W. Slap and Frank Towers. Indeed, after finishing the volume, one is at once excited by what one has learned and left yearning for more. As the book’s title suggests, the authors of the essays Slap and Towers include here are interested, broadly speaking, in ... Read More

  • Liberty Power: Antislavery Third Parties and the Transformation of
American Politics by Corey M. Brooks (review)
    • Abstract: The United States’ second party system was organized through the Whig and Democratic Parties, rivals that shared agreement on few matters other than one: the value of suppressing any discussion about slavery. To engage slavery would, for either party, enrage a powerful slaveholding faction and agitate northerners’ moral consciences; it would undo the hard work of organizing a national constituency. How was Congress—a most reluctant institution—therefore repurposed into an instrument for advancing juridical emancipation? Corey M. Brooks’s Liberty Power takes as its subject the third parties who brought public scrutiny to bear on not only slavery but the unseemly political organization underpinning ... Read More

  • Lincoln and the Thirteenth Amendment by Christian G. Samito (review)
    • Abstract: “We should not see Lincoln’s career as a straight line leading to emancipation,” Eric Foner once wisely cautioned. But Christian G. Samito thinks Lincoln’s apparent deviations from the straight line never were more than tactical. This brisk new study for the Concise Lincoln Library places Lincoln on a high pedestal. He understood all along, Samito contends, that slavery contradicted the American nation’s most basic principles and endangered its existence. He saw slavery as a cancer that needed to be excised. He was, furthermore, a champion of equal rights. Samito marginalizes instances in which Lincoln deviated from the straight line, and he recognizes that Lincoln long opposed any interference ... • German Immigrants, Race, and Citizenship in the Civil War Era by Alison
           Clark Efford (review)
    • Abstract: Ella Lonn’s pioneering work on immigrants in the Civil War in the 1940s and ’50s explored the ways that Irish, German, and other ethnic Americans experienced the war differently and similarly to white Americans of English descent. Interest in ethnicity during the Civil War remains strong among scholars in the twenty-first century, from Susannah Ural’s and Christian Samito’s studies of the Irish to Martine Öfele’s and Christian Keller’s books on German Americans. Alison Clark Efford’s German Immigrants, Race, and Citizenship in the Civil War Era goes beyond the important but old question of the war’s impact on assimilation to examine one immigrant group’s significant impact on politics, citizenship, and ... • Abolitionizing Missouri: German Immigrants and Racial Ideology in
Nineteenth Century America by Kristen Layne Anderson (review)
    • Abstract: The chief target of this extremely well-informed book is the myth of the universal loyalty to the American Union on the part of German immigrants in Missouri and of their unshakable support for the destruction of slavery and promotion of full citizenship for former slaves as well as free persons of color. Seen from “the outside,” the German community might have seemed unified in its hostility to the slave regime, largely because of the sudden spasm of energy with which refugees of the 1848 revolutions of Europe seized the opportunity to challenge and overthrow the elected state government of Missouri in 1861 in alliance with sympathetic federal military leaders. From “the inside,” it is a very different ... Read More

  • Excommunicated from the Union: How the Civil War Created a Separate
Catholic America by William B. Kurtz (review)
    • Abstract: In this thoroughly researched and tightly organized monograph, William B. Kurtz argues that the Civil War constituted a watershed event in the history of American Catholicism. Entering the conflict with expectations that their contributions to the Union war effort would diminish native-born Protestants’ antipathy toward their faith, most Catholics emerged from the war feeling just as alienated and isolated as they had in the antebellum period. The result, Kurtz argues, was that American Catholics “sought refuge for themselves and their faith in a subculture of their own making” in the late nineteenth century (9). Historians of American Catholicism will find this a provocative argument that merits ... Read More

  • Border Wars: The Civil War in Tennessee and Kentucky ed. by Kent T.
Dollar, Larry H. Whiteaker, W. Calvin Dickinson (review)
    • Abstract: Border Wars: The Civil War in Tennessee and Kentucky is a recently published collection of thirteen essays edited and compiled by historians Kent T. Dollar, Larry H. Whiteaker, and W. Calvin Dickinson. This work is divided into two parts; the first examines battles, skirmishes, and soldiers and the second, military leaders. Border Wars supplements the 2009 essay collection Sister States, Enemy States, which examines the political, social, and economic aspects of the war in Kentucky and Tennessee. However, Border Wars does much more than augment its predecessor: the contributors argue for wider recognition of the importance of these states to the broader war by reevaluating recent scholarship regarding ... • The Cause of All Nations: An International History of the Civil War by Don
           H. Doyle (review)
    • Abstract: Don Doyle’s The Cause of All Nations: An International History of the Civil War marks the maturation of the transnational reframing of U.S. Civil War historiography. Deeply engaged with the significant primary and secondary evidence in both the United States and Europe, and written with a verve and clarity that makes his book accessible to academic and nonacademic readers alike, The Cause of All Nations persuasively and in great detail situates the U.S. Civil War within the global struggle that in the middle decades of the nineteenth century pitted the forces of monarchy and hereditary privilege against the proponents of liberal republicanism. As Doyle makes clear, the transnational stakes ... Read More

  • New Orleans Women and the Poydras Home: More Durable Than Marble by Pamela
           Tyler (review)
    • Abstract: In the last fifteen years, scholars have begun to carefully explore the power and influence of religious women in New Orleans history. In their efforts to promote social and religious welfare through the establishment of schools, churches, and charity institutions, devout women not only challenged conventional roles for women, but they had notable power and influence in the South. Historians Emily Clark, Virginia Gould, and Edward Brett have examined the importance of charitable works and religious instruction by Catholic nuns in New Orleans; yet, few scholars have examined the benevolent efforts of Protestant women in the city. Pamela Tyler’s book, New Orleans Women and Poydras Home: More Durable Than ... Read More

  • The Butlers of Iberville Parish, Louisiana: Dunboyne Plantation in the
1800s by David D. Plater (review)
    • Abstract: David D. Plater’s The Butlers of Iberville Parish, Louisiana: Dunboyne Plantation in the 1800s is a family biography that illuminates the experiences of the Louisiana planter class during the nineteenth century. Plater’s extensively researched book focuses on the lives of his ancestors Edward G. W. Butler and Frances Parke Lewis. The couple moved to Iberville Parish in 1831 to run Dunboyne, their sugar plantation. Seeking to attain higher social status and provide for their children, the Butlers encountered numerous challenges, particularly during the Civil War and postbellum era, which ultimately forced them to sell their property in 1871.
