  • Editor's Overview
    • Abstract: Welcome to this special issue of Civil War History. On October 17, 2015, the Department of History at West Virginia University hosted a special one-day conference, called "Objects as Subjects: Material Cultures of the Civil War Era." The presentations and the roundtable focused on how material objects shaped the experience of war. For this special issue of Civil War History, we have invited Brian Luskey and Jason Phillips, who organized the conference, to share some of the presentations and discussion that took place on that beautiful fall afternoon in Morgantown and beyond.Preston Brooks's May 1856 assault on Charles Sumner transformed a common cane into a bitterly contested symbol. For some, it was Exhibit A in ... Read More

  • Muster: Inspecting Material Cultures of the Civil War
    • Abstract: According to the Revised Regulations for the Army of the United States, published in 1861, soldiers were to muster for pay six times a year. These assemblies were military pageants that displayed the organizational strength and functional hierarchy of armies. "Muster" is derived from a thirteenth-century French word that meant both "the inspection of an army" and a "manifestation (of power)." The breathtaking sight of the massing of troops and the presentation of arms revealed that power. "Muster" had another original meaning: "a show of merchandise for sale." Military musters were occasions for the inspection of soldiers' belongings. Commanders examined soldiers' appearances, rifles, accouterments, and clothing to ... Read More

  • Tracing the "Sacred Relicts": The Strange Career of Preston Brooks's Cane
    • Abstract: There are two related but distinct histories of Civil War causation. One dwells in pamphlets, editorials, and the Congressional Globe. It features constitutional quarrels, roll-call votes, and political stratagems. This history generated mountains of paper and is indispensable to understanding the sectional conflict, but it can leave a wide gap between antebellum politicking and wartime carnage. This is where the second, more visceral, history helps. It envelops us in dust kicked up by Kansas partisans; it puts John Brown's rough-hewn pikes in our hands, reminding us of when Edmund Ruffin calculated the value of disunion; it drops us into the sweaty, jostling crowd at Charleston's Institute Hall to watch the ... • The Dress of the Enemy: Clothing and Disease in the Civil War Era
    • Abstract: As the United States was roiling in the wake of Abraham Lincoln's assassination in April 1865, American, Canadian, and Bermudian newspapers were simultaneously covering "The Yellow Fever Plot: The Preparations Made by a Rebel Doctor to Destroy the Masses."1 At the center of this sensational conspiracy involving Confederate physician Luke Blackburn were several trunks, imported from Bermuda in 1864 during a yellow fever epidemic, containing "divers large quantities of shirts, blouses, coats and other articles of clothing, infected with the virus of yellow fever and other deadly, poisonous and noxious substances, calculated and liable to produce said fever."2 The trunks, some of which were stored in Washington, D.C. ... • Vacationing with the Civil War: Maine's Regimental Summer Cottages
    • Abstract: In 1895, Benjamin A. Norton applied the topcoat to a large summer cottage along the shore of Peaks Island, Maine (see fig. 1). Located on cleared land with panoramic views near the Greenwood Gardens amusement park, the building afforded access to a popular tourist destination, dubbed "Maine's Coney Island." The structure, built in 1888 by fellow island resident James G. Sanborn, now featured nine bedrooms, lit by dormered windows, arranged along a narrow corridor on the second floor, including one in the corner turret. At either end of the corridor sat balconies overlooking the island and the shore. The first floor held two larger bedrooms, immediately accessible from a foyer. A wide, covered veranda circled the ... Read More

  • The Material Cultures of the Civil War: A Conversation
    • Abstract: To conclude this special issue, four historians who have researched material cultures of the Civil War era consider, in the discussion that follows, how new scholarship on the subject can deepen our understanding of the period. We hope that this conversation among Joan E. Cashin, Brian Craig Miller, Megan Kate Nelson, and Jason Phillips encourages other historians to acknowledge and interpret the things they encounter in their own work. Why did you decide to study Civil War material cultures?I've always been interested in using different kinds of sources—and methodologies—to study history, even as far back as my undergraduate days. But it was really during my PhD program (Iowa, American Studies) that I began to ... Read More

  • Long Past Slavery: Representing Race in the Federal Writers' Project by
           Catherine A. Stewart (review)
    • Abstract: Historians have long been fascinated with the ex-slave narratives collected by the New Deal Federal Writers' Project. Scholars of race have grappled with the accuracy of the interviews, which were often conducted—and revised—by local whites. By focusing on the interviews' implications regarding slavery, such accounts elide the importance of the narratives within their own time period. In her book, Catherine Stewart mines the little-discussed context of the Ex-Slave Project to "understand the paradoxes of the 1930s" (230). Harnessing an array of archival sources, Stewart presents the project as a site "where competing visions of African American identity" vied for "ascendance in the struggle to map the contours of ... • A Refugee from His Race: Albion W. Tourgée and His Fight against White
Supremacy by Carolyn L. Karcher (review)
    • Abstract: Carolyn Karcher breaks new ground in the historiography of Albion Tourgée, Jim Crow, and African American resistance to white supremacy and racial violence during the nadir of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She tells familiar stories such as Reconstruction, the fight against lynching, early African American organization efforts, and the Plessy vs. Ferguson case but greatly improves the scholarship by emphasizing not only Tourgée's role but also the vital importance of progressive whites in assisting early African American civil rights efforts. Furthermore, she discusses the importance of Tourgée's ideas to the civil rights movement in the 1960s and to current political conflicts. The work argues ... Read More

  • Ku-Klux: The Birth of the Klan during Reconstruction by Elaine Frantz
           Parsons (review)
    • Abstract: Elaine Parsons enters the fray of sesquicentennial reassessments of Reconstruction with a well-researched account on one of the period's greatest villains—the Ku Klux Klan. Her work compliments other recent publications, but she pushes the scholarship of race and postwar violence in another direction. She offers a comprehensive revision of Allen W. Trelease's seminal work by focusing on the real people who meted out suffering as well as the more abstract "Ku-Klux" label that various individuals employed for their own purposes. She contends that the "two Klans were utterly entangled with one another: representations of the Ku-Klux had a separate though dependent relationship to the thing itself" (10).Parsons makes ... • Educational Reconstruction: African American Schools in the Urban South,
           1865–1890 by Hilary Green (review)
    • Abstract: Although the alacrity with which freedpeople embraced postemancipation education is a familiar feature of Reconstruction narratives, schooling is often treated as peripheral to, and sometimes even at odds with, the real political action of the era. In this crisply written and resourcefully researched new book, Hilary Green offers a compelling new interpretation of postwar education as a key site of African American political mobilization during Reconstruction and beyond. Citizenship, rather than social control, frames her investigation, which offers new insight into postemancipation African American politics that highlights adaptability and an abiding commitment to education as a key feature of freedom. Green ... Read More

  • The Lives of Frederick Douglass by Robert S. Levine (review)
    • Abstract: One of the foremost scholars of early African American literature, Robert S. Levine, has written a nuanced and careful analysis of Frederick Douglass's iconic autobiographies or, as he calls it, Douglass's many lives. The introduction, a survey of the historical literature and the publication histories of Douglass's autobiographies, is in itself worth the price of entrance. Levine not only delineates the content of these books, comparing them with Douglass's contemporaneous speeches and letters, but also frames his book around Douglass's relationship with pivotal figures of his times, William Lloyd Garrison, John Brown, Abraham Lincoln, and his erstwhile master, Thomas Auld. The result is a book that explodes ... Read More

  • Slave against Slave: Plantation Violence in the Old South by Jeff Forret
           (review)
    • Abstract: Jeff Forret's Slave against Slave: Plantation Violence in the Old South ignites another paradigm shift in the expanding historiography of American slavery, arguing that slave communities were privy to the same volatility as other groups, displaying instances of envy, resentment, and often violent disagreement. While past histories have analyzed black bodies subjected to violent attacks, most have viewed violence as an interracial affair and largely overlooked instances of intraracial violence. By historicizing questions of "black-on-black" violence and simultaneously overturning the overly romanticized histories of the "slave community," Forret has successfully tackled "the arresting juxtaposition between the ... • Stealing Freedom along the Mason-Dixon Line: Thomas McCreary, the
Notorious Slave Catcher from Maryland by Milt Diggins (review)
    • Abstract: On the evening of December 16, 1851, Thomas McCreary ambushed thirteen-year-old Elizabeth Parker as she crossed her employer's yard. Her seized her by the neck, forced a gag in her mouth, and plunged her into the back of a two-horse wagon heading south out of Pennsylvania and toward the Mason-Dixon line. Two weeks later, he located Elizabeth's seventeen-year-old-sister, Rachel Parker, and abducted her too—this time in broad daylight. McCreary was a slavecatcher from Maryland, and though the Parker sisters were legally free Pennsylvanians, their physical proximity to the border of a slave state meant that they had long been vulnerable to kidnapping and enslavement.Stealing Freedom is a tightly focused study of the ... • The Parker Sisters: A Border Kidnapping by Lucy Maddox (review)
    • Abstract: The Parker Sisters: A Border Kidnapping by Lucy Maddox recounts the events surrounding the 1851 kidnappings of Sisters Elizabeth and Rachel Parker, who were both free-born black natives of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Lying only seven miles from the state's border with Maryland, this rural part of southeastern Pennsylvania was the midcentury epicenter of conflict between the competing interests of North and South regarding the institution of slavery. The context and catalyst for this story is the passage of the Federal Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, which had profound consequences for the residents of Chester County and for the nation as well.Elizabeth and Rachel Parker lived in the predominantly white farming ... • 2017 Hubbell Prize Awarded
    • Abstract: William G. Thomas III, Kaci Nash, and Robert Shepard have won the John T. Hubbell Prize for the best article published in Civil War History during 2016. Their study, "Places of Exchange: An Analysis of Human and Materiél Flows in Civil War Alexandria, Virginia," Civil War History (December 2016), was selected by the journal's editorial advisory board. The prize earns the recipient a $1,000 award from The Kent State University Press. This article argues that specific geographic, military, and topographical conditions created "funnel points" where the Union Army amassed men, material, and animals to sustain its incursions into the South. Applying the concepts of flows, funnels, and networks from critical geographic ... Read More
