  • Editor's Overview
    • Abstract: During the American Civil War, Union and Confederate soldiers fraternized with one another despite strict prohibitions from the high command. As Lauren K. Thompson explains, fraternization was a recurring event in the life of common soldiers, seen both in the extent to which soldiers wrote about it in their letters and diaries, as well as officers' attempts to curtail it. Because of the major gap between what men expected from war and what they actually experienced, soldier accounts suggest a sense of uncertainty, real or imagined. Men saw military service as a way to strengthen and display their independence, but quite the opposite happened under the military mechanism. By using the commodities and environment at ... Read More

  • Escaping the Mechanism: Soldier Fraternization during the Siege at
           Petersburg
    • Abstract: On July 18, 1864, Gen. Robert E. Lee issued Special Orders No. 167 to the 1st Army Corps commander, Lt. Gen. R. H. Anderson. Lee ordered, "The practice of permitting communication between our pickets and skirmishers and those of the enemy, is highly injurious to the service and subversive of discipline. No intercourse or conversation with the enemy shall be allowed, and no officers or man will be permitted to go outside of our picket lines except by authority of the Corps commander or officer commanding detached troops."1 Lee's concern over rampant fraternization demonstrated the frequency with which soldiers risked their standing in the army, and ultimately their lives, to communicate with the enemy. As citizen ... Read More

  • The Early Indicators Project: Using Massive Data and Statistical Analysis
to Understand the Life Cycle of Civil War Soldiers
    • Abstract: In the 1980s, Robert W. Fogel initiated what became the Early Indicators of Later Work Levels, Disease, and Death, a database consisting of information drawn from the military service records, medical records, and pension records of nearly 40,000 Union soldiers. In addition, his collaborators linked these veterans to census data to reveal more information about them. The result was the creation of the largest database on Civil War soldiers we are ever likely to see. It provides unparalleled access to the life cycle of Union veterans well into the twentieth century. At least 158 publications have been produced from this database by scholars working in American economic and social history, by economists, medical ... Read More

  • The Free State of Jones: A Roundtable
    • Abstract: The summer of 2016 saw the release of the first large-budget Civil War film since 2012's critically acclaimed Lincoln. The Free State of Jones, directed by Gary Ross and starring Matthew McConaughey, is not simply, however, another film about the Civil War. Based on historian Victoria Bynum's acclaimed book The Free State of Jones: Mississippi's Longest Civil War, this film marks an important shift in the popular depiction of America's greatest conflict as it takes viewers inside the complex inner civil wars many Americans fought during this period. Long defined as a conflict pitting the north against the south, the realities of the Civil War were, as this film attempts to show, much more complex. Questions of ... Read More

  • Confederate Political Economy: Creating and Managing a Southern
Corporatist Nation by Michael Brem Bonner (review)
    • Abstract: In Confederate Political Economy, Michael Brem Bonner sets out to explain the nature of the Confederate state and political system, something many others have done before him. What differentiates this study from previous ones is that Bonner does an exceptionally good job of situating his analysis in its historical moment and examining the Confederacy on its own terms and in its own time. Because the Confederacy was established to defend the institution of slavery and failed to do so, there is always a temptation to see the entire enterprise as the end of an antebellum order based on human bondage that had to be swept away so the United States could modernize. In fact, Bonner's argument, avoiding hindsight, is that ... Read More

  • Gold and Freedom: The Political Economy of Reconstruction by Nicholas
           Barreyre (review)
    • Abstract: Any sort of scholarly discussion of Reconstruction must contend with Eric Foner's definitive Reconstruction: An Unfinished Revolution (1988), now nearly thirty years old. Foner's work masterfully weaves together Republicans' political attempts to assert a new order on the South and the social dynamics at play in a postslavery society. Others have subsequently delved into this narrative always placing race relations at the forefront—and rightly so. That said, some scholars in more recent memory have tried to examine this Reconstruction story by moving into other realms, be it Heather Cox Richardson's excellent West from Appomattox (1998) detailing a more nationalist view of Reconstruction or Gregory Downs's very ... • A Saga of the New South: Race, Law, and Public Debt in Virginia by Brent
           Tarter (review)
    • Abstract: Brent Tarter traces a spiraling tangle of post-1865 legal and political controversies over repaying debt that Virginia had contracted before the Civil War. As the story twists and travels, Tarter manages to make decades of legislative debate, legal briefings, and financial arguments readable, occasionally even gripping. In his hands, the debt controversy becomes a test of whether elite Virginians would cling to prewar culture, values, and politics or accept the very different postwar world. With Virginia in a predictable postwar state of ruin, with nearly one-third of her former territory abstracted away into West Virginia, political leaders felt trapped between honorably keeping promises made when times were bright ... • The Virgin Vote: How Young Americans Made Democracy Social, Politics
Personal, and Voting Popular in the Nineteenth Century by Jon Grinspan
           (review)
    • Abstract: The Virgin Vote is a noteworthy addition to the ongoing debate about why nineteenth-century popular politics were so vastly different than those of our current era. Jon Grinspan's book examines "how young Americans stepped further into public life as they aged" (13). Grinspan analyzes how Americans related to politics from childhood through adulthood between 1840 and 1900. Grinspan pays particular attention to how young Americans used politics to address personal ambitions, including career, love, and reputation. During this period, to get ahead, young Americans became active in politics. The country was changing so rapidly—culturally, economically, geographically—that politics seemed to open doors to new ... • The First Republican Army: The Army of Virginia and the Radicalization of
the Civil War by John H. Matsui (review)
    • Abstract: As all students of the Civil War know, the Jacksonian age had universalized a white male democratic political culture. When thousands of volunteers joined the military in 1861, the newly enlisted soldiers refused to surrender what they saw as their rights as citizens. In the face of this, West Point officers like George B. McClellan had no chance to control the war with their exclusive expertise. This is the starting point for John Matsui's The First Republican Army. As Matsui argues it, in John Pope's Army of Virginia the soldiery's desire to make the war its own was combined with the congressional Republican urgency to construct a radical army as a counterweight to McClellan. The result, Matsui insists, was a ... Read More

  • Literary Cultures of the Civil War ed. by Timothy Sweet (review)
    • Abstract: Timothy Sweet's collection of essays, Literary Cultures of the Civil War, carries on the tradition of reshaping the composition and analysis of the cannon of Civil War literature that was inaugurated in the 1990s and early 2000s by scholars such as Kathleen Diffley, Elizabeth Young, and Alice Fahs. Each section of the book either brings to the reader's attention a new body of writing that has previously been overlooked by those interested in the literature of the period or reframes our understanding of existing texts. The first group of essays examines Civil War–era African American authors and the literary culture they created. Thomas Wentworth Higginson's writings and those of William Wells Brown are probably both ... Read More

  • Apostle of Union: A Political Biography of Edward Everett by Matthew Mason
           (review)
    • Abstract: Good biographies do more than simply bring a historical figure's story to life; the best accounts shed light on the complex moment in which that actor lived. From this perspective, Matthew Mason's political biography of Massachusetts conservative Edward Everett is an exceptional contribution to the history of the Civil War era. In ten tightly argued chapters, Mason demonstrates that Everett's political career was defined by an overwhelming commitment to the American Union above all else, disrupting the standard narrative of a sectional politics defined solely by northern or southern interests. Everett sought (sometimes successfully) to promote a vision of the Union based in "nationalism, law and order, and reform" ... Read More

  • Free Spirits: Spiritualism, Republicanism, and Radicalism in the Civil War
Era by Mark A. Lause (review)
    • Abstract: In 1848, sisters Katie and Maggie Fox claimed that their house was chased by ghosts. The public reaction initiated the spiritualist movement, which quickly spread and became a curiosity of mid-nineteenth-century America. Spiritualists believed in the ability of ordinary people to contact the spirits of the dead in the afterlife, thus challenging orthodox Christian faith. In Free Spirits, Mark A. Lause examines "the impact of spiritualism as a movement on the social and political course of the nation in a particularly critical period of American history" (2). He argues that the movement's popularity reflected a growing support for political and social equality in Civil War era North: "A generation before Karl Marx's ... Read More

  • Bonds of Union: Religion, Race, and Politics in a Civil War Borderland by
           Bridget Ford (review)
    • Abstract: In Bonds of Union: Religion, Race, and Politics in a Civil War Borderland, Bridget Ford explores what the "bonds of union" meant to nineteenth-century Americans. Whether used in formal speeches or in more informal ways, the phrase had a religious, familial, or political connotation. Ford argues that most understood the concept as a combination of these notions, and more importantly, the "bonds of union" helped bridge differences between white and black, Catholic and Protestant, and northern and southern Americans. This contributed to the abolition of slavery and the Union victory during the Civil War. Importantly, Ford insists that while these deeply held ideals of union ultimately triumphed, they did not increase ... Read More

  • Liberty and Union: The Civil War and American Constitutionalism by Timothy
           S. Huebner (review)
    • Abstract: In Liberty and Union: The Civil War and American Constitutionalism, Timothy S. Huebner joins three historiographical currents: U.S. constitutional history, the history of the U.S. Civil War, and African American history. Huebner argues that Americans venerated the founding generation and the Constitution yet differing interpretations sparked political debates and led to hostilities. He writes that many white Americans in the slaveholding states believed that the founders placed individual liberties, particularly the right to hold slaves, at the heart of the Constitution. In the northern states, many elevated the Union as the most central tenet of the Constitution. Articulating distinct ideas about the founding ... Read More
