  • Editor’s Note
    • Abstract: This issue of Biography is the first to combine open-forum articles with a guest-edited cluster of essays on a particular theme. The result is a collection richly varied in terms of topic, methodology, form, and geography, with contributions dealing with life writing in Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa, the UK, and the US.The four pieces gathered in the cluster “On Prince: A Labor of Love, Loss, and Freedom” represent something of a departure for the journal. They are all deeply personal responses to the legendary performer’s passing in April 2016, each offering a finely tuned testimony to Prince’s particular influence on the writer’s life. Engaging race, gender, sexuality, age, desire, grief, joy, and community as ... Read More

  • Introduction: On Prince: A Labor of Love, Loss, and Freedom
    • Abstract: I’ve been thinking a lot about pain management lately, or how we, as Black people, manage pain—individually and in community. How we manage centuries of pain, trauma, and loss (joy, as well), and how that affects who we are. How those histories, collective traumas, and experiences translate to our everyday experience and understanding of who we are as a “people.” And how do we organize to manage our pain' Do we come together or stay in the silent, solo spaces many of us hold onto' Perhaps, more importantly, what or who helps us manage pain' Soothes us and our souls' Acts as medicine so that we can carry on to the next day' Acts as medicine so that we can finally be free. When I think about these questions, my mind ... • Prince and the Erotics of Democracy
    • Abstract: Black American music, as we know it, was born in rebellion and horror, fantasy and desire, slave camps and starships, ring shouts and juke joints, barrel-houses, barber shops, and buckets of blood. We hear the background radiation. We hear the sonic refusal of Black Civilizations to submit to the Barbarian delusion: their unfulfilled wish- projection that several millennia of African cunning and cosmology had somehow wound up bereft of human features. No Gods, no memory, no love, no history, culture, or intellects.Ha. As if, only.In his visionary and prophetic 1903 essay collection The Souls of Black Folk, W. E. B. Du Bois identifies the earliest genre of those sonic refusals as “The Sorrow Songs.” Du Bois rightly ... Read More

  • Obituarizing Black Maleness, Obituarizing Prince
    • Abstract: On April 21, 2016, I was leaving a three-hour graduate seminar on Atlantic slavery when I noticed multiple voicemails, text messages, and emails from my editors at the Guardian. I had already spent enough time steeped in Black death for a day, but while I had been in class, the Purple One had passed away.Prince Nelson Rogers had already given us a scare when his plane made an emergency landing a few days before. But this time the Kid danced offstage for good, leaving our world a little less colorful, a little less soulful—and a lot lonelier. In both my journalism and academic writing lives, I deal with race, Black culture, and sexuality, but the temporalities couldn’t be more different. It is possible to work on an ... Read More

  • Prince, Queerness, and the Both/And of “Or”
    • Abstract: First some context:I dropped out of college in the middle of senior year because I wanted to be a writer. I was lucky enough to see that dream through, becoming a music journalist, reviewing records and concerts, interviewing musicians, and trying to dig beyond the surface of celebrity and stardom to locate how they did the things they did, played the notes they played, and wrote the lyrics they sang. The highlight of that life: traveling to Paisley Park to interview Prince as he put the finishing touches on his Diamonds and Pearls album. That weekend in Minnesota I knew I was joining a very small fraternity of post-Purple Rain–era music journalists; Prince had stopped doing press, allowing his music and shows to ... Read More

  • Keywords: Light Skin-ded Free Black Sex, Girlfriend
    • Abstract: The death of Prince Rogers Nelson was devastating for me. It was like losing a family member, which is one of the first things I said when I was able to stop crying. Not like a freak out, what some might call hysterical, cry, but one that was deep, aching, and ongoing. It was a deep ache because it took me back to another deep ache, as music often does, to one of those defining moments as a young woman: the time when I had a tight group of young women friends, all of us teenagers, when the line between friendship, sisterhood, love, and attraction overlapped. A time before I came out as queer but felt like these women really knew me. And they did, a huge feat in my mostly white hometown, my mostly white family (in ... Read More

  • Self-Narratives on Social Networks: Trans-Platform Stories and
Facebook’s Metamorphosis into a Postmodern Semiautomated Repository
    • Abstract: In recent years narratology studies that specifically concentrate on processes of identity construction and self-reflective writing (such as diaries and autobiographies) have gone from focusing on big life stories—long, retrospectively written accounts (Freeman)—to small stories—fragmented ongoing talks-in-interaction (Georgakopoulo; Bamberg). This change is due to the fact, as Michael Bamberg suggests, that “to stumble upon someone recounting his/her whole life from a distant past to the present moment is an extremely rare occurrence” (109). By contrast, the mundanity inherent in “small stories”—from face-to-face interviews to phone calls, emails, and chats—makes them virally widespread and provides valuable ... Read More

  • “More National (to Ireland) than Personal”: James Prior’s Life of
           Oliver Goldsmith (1837)
    • Abstract: In 1837 James Prior, an Irish-born naval surgeon whose well-received biography of Edmund Burke had appeared in 1824, published a biography of Oliver Goldsmith. Like the Memoir of the Life and Character of Edmund Burke, Prior’s Life of Oliver Goldsmith was generally well received. Among the praise, however, were a few demurrals, most notably from John Forster in The Examiner. Forster criticized Prior for what he considered his pedantic accumulation of detail. Prior, Forster wrote, “wanders away from his subject at every second or third page” (Review 819). When Prior did return to Goldsmith, there were rewards for the reader, and Forster admitted to feeling “sincere gratification” by the time he reached the end of ... Read More

  • “The Experience Being My Own”: Identifying Life Writing in Plays by
Canadian Veterans of the Great War
    • Abstract: Some 630,000 Canadian soldiers served in the Great War between 1914 and 1919, of whom fewer than two thousand are known to have published some form of life writing after their return. In The Canadian Experience of the Great War: A Guide to Memoirs, Brian Tennyson lists 1,885 texts—memoirs, autobiographies, letters, diaries, poems, short stories, and novels—in his exhaustive list of life writing from the war. Tennyson makes the point that he included novels and poems (he does not explicitly mention plays, although there are two in his list) “on the grounds that they also constitute a creative form of memoir of their author’s war-time experiences” (xxv). These plays, and more that he does not list, are anomalous ... Read More

  • “A Very Strange Relationship”: Life Writing, Overwriting, and the
Scandal of Biography in the Gordimer-Roberts Affair
    • Abstract: Thus we have the thickest volumes on some of the strangest subjects. On the back cover of Ronald Suresh Roberts’s biography of the South African novelist and Nobel laureate in literature there appears, instead of the usual blurbs, an image of a Sunday Times poster. “gordimer bans book” reads the headline that appeared, the caption explains, “days after Nadine Gordimer attempted to stop the publication of No Cold Kitchen, August 11, 2004.” Like so much else in this book, the various components that make up the paratext are in an odd and dissonant relation to each other. Below the photograph is an excerpt from a letter that Gordimer wrote to Roberts dated January 16, 2003, full of praise for his work in progress:The ... Read More

  • “Here I Am”: Eliot, “Gerontion,” and the Great War
    • Abstract: Eliot’s “Gerontion” begins with a simple request, one that is implicit in all forms of life writing, that asks us to recognize the present being of the speaking I. “Here I am” (Eliot, “Gerontion” 31). But as the line shifts immediately to conjure up its “old man in a dry month” (“Gerontion” 31), the poem does everything it can, particularly through layers of irony and allusion, to mitigate against, or at least greatly complicate, the autobiographical mode invited in those opening three syllables. Eliot’s consistent advice to readers of this famously difficult poem was that they should follow form not content. He pointed Mary Hutchinson, probably the poem’s first reader, to its allusive nature when he boasted on ... Read More

  • The Private Jefferson: Perspectives from the Collections of the
Massachusetts Historical Society by Henry Adams, Peter S. Onuf, Andrea
           Wulf (review)
    • Abstract: The Private Jefferson: Perspectives from the Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society stars an important collection of Jefferson documents, and they are given fine treatment here. The publication coordinated with the exhibition The Private Jefferson: From the Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society, which opened at the Massachusetts Historical Society (MHS) in 2016 and has been traveling since. Bolstered by supporting text and large images, this catalog is a worthy addition to the Jefferson bookshelf. It features a number of very important papers, including the Dunlap printing and a manuscript draft of the Declaration of Independence, as well as other documents that add depth to the vast pool ... • Musical Biographies: The Music of Memory in Post-1945 German Literature by
           Michal Ben-Horin (review)
    • Abstract: This book investigates musically mediated responses to the “catastrophe of the Second World War and the Nazi past” in German literature (1). The primary texts, whose respective publication dates span almost fifty years, are treated roughly chronologically. Although a number of authors and texts are discussed throughout this study, its core consists of four full chapters, each devoted to a single author: Thomas Mann, Günter Grass, Ingeborg Bachmann, and Thomas Bernhard. With the exception of the Bernhard chapter, where two texts are examined in depth, each chapter revolves around a single work.In his introduction, and in search of a theoretical framework for the individual readings, Ben-Horin briefly reviews lines ... • Narrative Matters in Medical Contexts across Disciplines ed. by Franziska
           Gygax, Miriam A. Locher (review)
    • Abstract: This collection of essays discusses the way narratives are used and can be used in the medical field. The authors have a background in various disciplines, from the humanities to psychology and medicine. The wider context of the book is the emerging interest in how people live with and experience diseases. This interest is a result of a growing awareness of how patients’ experiences of their illnesses often affect both the course of the disease and the treatment. Both patients’ and doctors’ experiences are often expressed in stories, a fact that led to an interest in the relation between narrative and medicine in the 1980s. Today, medical doctors are oftentimes expected to listen to and take into account the ... Read More

  • The Lives of Frederick Douglass by Robert S. Levine (review)
    • Abstract: From Joseph Hanno, a “Miserable African Just Going to Be Executed” in 1721 (Mather), through the first-person poetry of Phillis Wheatley, all the way up to Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father (1995), life writing has been integral to the African American literary tradition and to American culture more broadly. From the colonial period onward, narrated Black lives have mattered tremendously to American audiences. In early America, first-person Black subjects often stood as cautionary or inspiring exempla in narratives that joined the overlapping traditions of spiritual autobiography, criminal confession, and the picaresque. As the late Dickson D. Bruce, Jr., observed, these often ventriloquized accounts asserted ... Read More

  • Making Marie Curie: Intellectual Property and Celebrity Culture in an Age
of Information by Eva Hemmings Wirtén (review)
    • Abstract: Eva Wirtén’s Making Marie Curie is a compact study of several aspects of Marie Curie’s life and career as a public figure rather than a biography of a scientist at work on her science. The book is concerned, in successive chapters (which might well have stood alone as journal articles) with four topics: 1) Curie’s writing of her own life, 2) her and her husband Pierre’s attitudes toward the ownership of their discoveries, especially radium, 3) the scandal surrounding Marie’s affair with Paul Langevin after Pierre’s death, and 4) Marie Curie’s role in the 1920s and 1930s in the League of Nations’ attempt to create an international standard for intellectual property pertaining specifically to scientists as creators ...
