  • Editors’ Note
    • Abstract: Last year’s installment of our annual Annotated Bibliography of Works about Life Writing was the final one containing contributions from the feature’s founding editor, Phyllis Wachter. She decided that thirty years was enough, and with great gratitude for her work, we accepted her decision and thanked her in the Editors’ Note. This year’s installment of the bibliography will be the last one strongly shaped by the contributions of our Managing Editor for the past twenty-two years, Stan Schab. He retired in October of 2016. For more information on just how responsible Stan has been for this prominent feature of Biography, please consult the tributes celebrating his importance to the Center for Biographical Research ... • Tributes to Stan Schab
    • Abstract: This image of Stan Schab accompanies the announcement for the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Service, which he received in 2007.With the possible exceptions of my wife and son, I have spent more time with Stan Schab than any other human being. He became the one full-time employee of the Center for Biographical Research at almost the same time that I became editor of Biography, in 1994, and after I became Director of the Center in 1997, we occupied the same office space for the next nineteen years. I therefore have some sense of what he has meant to Biography, and to the field of life writing.Though listed over the years as Assistant, Associate, and then Managing Editor, what Stan has actually done for Biography ... • Welcome to Anjoli Roy
    • Abstract: Among the many changes Biography and the Center for Biographical Research have been undergoing this year, by far the most welcome has been the appointment of Anjoli Roy as the journal’s new Managing Editor. Anjoli comes to us with more than eleven years of experience in publishing. From 2005 to 2008 she served as Associate Editor at the Feminist Press and as the Managing Editor of Women’s Studies Quarterly (WSQ). She has also worked as an editor for the University of Iowa Press, the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP), the Center on the Family, Korean Studies, and Mānoa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing. Her stint as a copy editor at Biography in 2009–2010 gave her a grounding ... Read More

  • Digression, Slavery, and Failing to Return in the Narrative of the
           Sufferings of Lewis Clarke
    • Abstract: In the tenth chapter of his Narrative of the Life (1845) Frederick Douglass rages against the hypocrisy of Christian slaveholders in what he identifies as a digression:My blood boils as I think of the bloody manner in which Messrs. Wright Fairbanks and Garrison West, both class-leaders, in connection with many others, rushed in upon us with sticks and stones, and broke up our virtuous little Sabbath school, at St. Michael’s—all calling themselves Christians! humble followers of the Lord Jesus Christ! But I am again digressing. The metacommentary of the last sentence punctuates the tone of the preceding and implicitly begs forgiveness for “again digressing” from the reader, stating that this digression is a repeat ... • Making and Unmaking: Child-Soldier Memoirs and Human Rights Readers
    • Abstract: You have seen how a man was made a slave; you shall see how a slave was made a man.I have been rehabilitated now, so don’t be afraid of me. I am not a soldier anymore, I am a child.Grace Akallo’s narrative of her abduction and forcible conscription by Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army in Northern Uganda opens with her rising from the dead. Having fainted with fatigue and thirst, she has been taken for dead and buried in a shallow grave by her fellow child soldiers. Regaining consciousness under a thin blanket of earth, Akallo announces, “Seven months after my capture, I am no longer myself” (McDonnell and Akallo 28). What she has become is “a skeleton that will not stay peacefully in [her] grave” (28). Clearly ... Read More

  • International Year in Review: Introduction
    • Abstract: This inaugural International Year in Review launches a new annual feature in Biography. In the summer of 2016, we invited contributors from around the world to write short essays looking back on some of the most influential publications in biography, autobiography, memoir, and other forms of life writing during the previous year in the countries, regions, and languages in which they specialize. This collection of site-specific reflections will replace the journal’s Reviewed Elsewhere section and complement our ongoing Annual Bibliography of Works about Life Writing. Our aim is to offer a wide range of focused, personal perspectives on global trends in life writing from correspondents who are intimately familiar ... Read More

  • Pictures at an Exhibition: The Year in Australia
    • Abstract: Each July the Archibald Prize (aka the “Archie”) triggers debates about biographical representation here in Australia, and in a good year 140,000 visitors go to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney between July and October to view this annual celebration of the portrait as a work of art.1 As Cynthia Freeland points out in her philosophical approach to portraiture, questions about social performance, gender identity, and the relevance of cultural frameworks for defining the self and personhood have historically been attached to this art.2 In 2016 gender parity was reached for the first time in the prize’s ninety-five-year history: twenty-five women and twenty-six men were selected as finalists whose work was ... • Biography in Austria, a Selection: The Year in Austria
    • Abstract: Recent research and publications in life writing in Austria have taken many forms.BiographiA is a four-volume lexicon of Austrian women that Böhlau Verlag published in May 2015. The lexicon commemorates 6,500 women in Austrian history from the Roman period to the present day. In addition to the print edition, there is also a much larger online database containing around 20,000 biographies. The project of the Dokumentationsstelle Frauenforschung des Instituts für Wissenschaft und Kunst (IWK), which has been running since 1998 and is led by Ilse Korotin, is making a substantial contribution to feminist biographical research. This lexicon addresses the problem of the structural marginalization of women’s lives in ... • Public Lives as Personal Assets, the Trial of Biography: The Year in
           Brazil
    • Abstract: On June 10, 2015, the Brazilian Supreme Court declared unconstitutional the necessity of prior authorization to publish biographies. This date marked the end of a long-lasting battle between some biographers and their subjects. Before this date, an anachronistic and ambiguous set of civil laws and constitutional norms tied the legitimacy of a biographic work to the previous consent of subjects of the biography or their relatives. Granted, these norms and laws had a convincing reason to exist, but their consequences indicated a significant obstacle for the activity of biographers, both in the commercial and academic realms. The return to democracy intended to put an end to two decades of a military dictatorship’s ... • Truth and Reconciliation in Life Writing: The Year in Canada
    • Abstract: The most significant life writing event in Canada over the past several years has been the Canadian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), which collected the life stories, in various forms, of survivors of Canada’s residential schools. With a mandate of cultural genocide, the government-funded and church-run residential school system that operated in Canada for over 100 years forcibly removed Indigenous children from their homes, placing them in boarding facilities where many suffered ongoing neglect and abuse. Many of the narratives gathered by the TRC are available in highly mediated form in The Survivors Speak: A Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. While the TRC itself offers ... • Nostalgia for Republican China: The Year in China
    • Abstract: Given the numbers of life writing works on people who lived in Republican China1 published over the last two years, we can probably say that a nostalgia for pre-1949 Republican China is still a trend in China’s life writing publications nowadays. According to the data from main bookstores online and in stores last year,2 biographies on Lin Huiyin, Hu Shi, Zhang Ailing, Chiang Kai-shek, Xiao Hong, Song Meiling, and many other cultural icons active in China during the period from 1911 to 1949 have been best-sellers for months. There are also a remarkable number of newly published life writing works on people active in Republican China, including biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, and other texts on Lin ... • Old Traditions and New Experiments: The Year in Finland
    • Abstract: In 2015, the nonfiction bestseller in Finland was the autobiography of the football player Jari Litmanen entitled Litmanen 10, and third on the list was the biography of ice hockey player Jarkko Ruutu. In September 2016, the bestseller was journalist Maarit Tyrkkö’s autobiographical memoir Presidentti ja toimittaja, a book about her close relationship with President Kekkonen during the 1970s and early 80s. The first volume of this memoir, Tyttö ja nauhuri, was published two years earlier. In September 2016, three books in the field of life writing were among the country’s six bestsellers.Biography seems to be a genre that consistently interests readers, and these texts are often the most discussed books within ... • “Life Writing” n’est pas français: The Year in
           France
    • Abstract: Napoleon is reputed to have said, “impossible n’est pas français” (“Lettre” 296), but he also exclaimed, “Quel roman que ma vie!” (Mémorial 342)—“My life, what a novel!” In France today, life writing seems impossible, and for all intents and purposes does not exist as such, unless it appears as another one of these ideas from le monde anglosaxon—the English-speaking world—that is to say the USA and its cultural epigones. In the extreme, the fact that there is an academic practice called life writing in other countries proves nothing else than the facility with which American cultural products export themselves to the rest of the world. The same thing has long applied to cultural studies, from which life writing ... Read More

  • Guntram Vesper’s Frohburg Between Religion and Politics: The Year in
           Germany
    • Abstract: In March 2016 the Leipzig Book Prize was awarded to Guntram Vesper’s more than thousand-page-long epic autobiographical novel, Frohburg. The book came out at a time when Germany faces big challenges of migration and integration while the future of the European Community that for decades had been a reliable frame for the country’s welfare seems more than ever uncertain. Frohburg draws the reader’s attention to periods in German history of similar turbulances that might be considered as reflective of today’s problems. The Book Prize committee praised the book as an “opus magnum” and a “mammoth work.” The jury said that Frohburg reveals a wide landscape of history that includes—looking back from the present—the old ... • Seeking Facts and Witnesses in a Post-Factual Age: The Year in Hungary
    • Abstract: January 2015 to November 2016 was a particularly lively time for the publication of life writing texts in Hungary. In the beginning of 2015, the prestigious literary publishing house Magvető relaunched its nonfiction book series, Tények és tanúk. The book series had a cult following in the seventies and in the eighties, probably because it was one of the few public sources for testimonies representing twentieth-century Hungarian history from an angle different than the one official history books offered. Several memoirs, diaries, and autobiographies that important figures (writers and politicians, among others) and also common people wrote on Hungary’s twentieth-century history were published during this first ... • Truth and Testimonies: The Year in Iceland
    • Abstract: In 2016 incursions of the “real” were very much in evidence in Icelandic cultural life. Hrafnhildur Hagalín and Björn Thors’s documentary theatre piece Flóð premiered at Reykjavik City Theatre in January 2016, and a related radio series on the same material, which Thorgerður Sigurðardóttir produced, both broadcasted on Channel 1 of the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RÚV) and was made available as a podcast. The play and the series were based on testimonies from the avalanche that devastated the small town of Flateyri in the Westfjords of Iceland in 1995. The authors interviewed survivors, members of the emergency and rescue services, and politicians who visited the site, and all were given the time to ... Read More

  • I Am No Hero, the Alternative to Being a Role Model: The Year in Korea
    • Abstract: This essay introduces some characteristics of and current trends in contemporary life writing in South Korea. A common feature of such writing has been a dominant discourse of success stories that began with Korea’s rapid economic development since the 1960s and has lasted to this day. In order to point to a few changes that have recently occurred in how one represents oneself in Korea, the essay more closely examines the poet Kim Hyesoon’s Ana nŭ n iro˘ k’e mal haetta (2016) and the composite artist Enzo’s (Yi Hyŏk’s) Nallari chasŏchŏn (2016).1 But Kim’s and Enzo’s works suggest changing trends in autobiographical representations in Korea that will likely continue to appear in the future and further modify the ... • Biography in the Public Sphere: The Year in the Netherlands
    • Abstract: The culture of the biography in the Netherlands is based on a strong national tradition. At the same time—and there might well be a relation with the size of the country—public opinion on the genre is strongly internationally oriented. An example can be found in the Dutch translating policy. When a biography of Hitler or Goebbels, written by Peter Longerich, appears in the United Kingdom, it takes roughly two years until this book appears on the American market. Often such books are to be found in Dutch bookstores, translated and nicely bound, more than a year before they appear in the United States.A turbulent history precedes this state of affairs in the Netherlands. In 1990, the Nederlandse Maatschappij der ... Read More

  • Reflections and Insights: The Year in Portugal
    • Abstract: In Portugal, the tradition of life writing is still embryonic. Catherine Dumas, Portuguese teacher at Sorbonne Nouvelle University, Paris, argues that there is a tendency to include the writing of diaries in fictional literature and she stresses that in general, these two genres are frequently confused with one another. In fact, only recently, scholars in academia have started to include memoirs, diaries, biographies, autobiographies, and other forms of life writing in their curricula. It is also important to note that the first study on letter writing in Portugal dates only from 1965, thus demonstrating how late the theme has caught the attention of specialists. In fact, the work of Andrée Crabbé Rocha, A ... Read More

  • Life Writing in Full Bloom: The Year in Romania
    • Abstract: The recent literary scene in Romania has been characterized as swept by “an avalanche of biographies, journals, and memoirs” (Mihăieș 7), with this “spectacular resurgence” of personal diaries, journals, memoirs, and confessions “tending to take over the market” (Manolescu 7–8). Although Romanian confessional literature dates back to the early chronicles in the seventeenth century and the nineteenth century saw it flourish, traditionally life writing as a genre has been castigated (G. Călinescu), seen as a minor type, and defined as “frontier literature” (Iosifescu). However, in 2001, one of Romania’s most established literary critics dedicated a three-volume monograph to the topic, signaling renewed critical ... Read More

  • Movement of Trade and Movement of People: The Year in The Uk
    • Abstract: In the Brexit referendum of June 23, 2016, the United Kingdom voted in favor of leaving the European Union. The margin of victory was narrow—52 to 48 percent—and the search for broader sociological and political explanations for the result has been no less contentious. The right-wing historian Andrew Roberts called it “a more impressive achievement than the French Revolution,” a triumphant decision to “take back control” from foreign and domestic elites. For disillusioned Remain voters, it seems merely one last, self-destructively xenophobic tantrum from the deluded center of an old empire. The decision to call the referendum itself, however, can be discussed in terms of individual biography. The Conservative Party ... Read More

  • The Life of the Body in American Autobiography: The Year in the Us
    • Abstract: “Who lives, who dies, who tells your story?” A host of life writers seemingly responded to this urgent refrain sung by a multicultural cast of founding fathers at the conclusion of Hamilton. By putting the question of survival at the center of a musical about American history and futurity, Lin-Manuel Miranda joined a company of life writers whose memoirs and essays placed the vulnerable body center stage in bold narratives about life, death, belonging, and legacy. Alternately vulnerable, injured, desiring, pregnant, grieving, and haunted by history, the body offered life writers a way to think through public space, relationships, precarity, and survival. This wasn’t the year of self-help; this was the year of the ... Read More

  • American Biography: The Year in The US
    • Abstract: Near the end of every year an assortment of top-ten lists proliferates claiming to identify the best work in fiction, nonfiction, biography, and much more. Sometimes the choices make sense, but most often they simply reflect the reading habits and biases of committee members trying to cope with evaluating too many books in too little time. I propose to do something different for this year and every year I am permitted to do so: provide commentary on a small selection of books that reveal the extraordinary range and diversity of the genre while, in some cases, also pointing out missed opportunities and problematic maneuvers in the biographies at hand. The historical biography is one of the enduring branches of the ... • Aux Origines du journal personnel: France, 1750–1815 by Philippe
           Lejeune (review)
    • Abstract: In France, private practices of diary-writing (the journal personnel or journal intime) emerged at some point toward the end of the eighteenth century, despite the fact that similar practices had existed much earlier in neighboring Britain and Germany. On this point scholars are largely in agreement, but still very little else is yet known about the reasons for this emergence, or the ways in which these writing practices developed from more public modes of writing such as the chronicle or the travel account. One reason for our relative ignorance is the paucity of primary texts available, since we can assume that many of the earliest journaux intimes were lost or destroyed, and those that were kept have generally ... • The Impossible Craft: Literary Biography by Scott Donaldson (review)
    • Abstract: In this handsomely presented book, Scott Donaldson draws upon his own expertise as well as the methods and the testimony of other writers whose work he admires to offer a sympathetic scrutiny of what Lytton Strachey called in Eminent Victorians (1918) “the most delicate and humane of all the branches of the art of writing” (vi), the biography. In this instance, Donaldson focuses on the literary biography.Full of anecdotes, hard-won advice, details of craft, and compelling case studies, this text is also an engaging and disarmingly honest account of the problems he encountered, and the pleasures he experienced, while trying to reconstruct “without prejudice” but with definitive completeness the life and work of a ... • Memory and Migration: Multi-disciplinary Approaches to Memory Studies eds.
by Julia Creet and Andreas Kitzmann (review)
    • Abstract: People and communities move, and with them so do their memories. The most vivid memories can be triggered or even altered in an instant by anything at all. It might be the sight of a shade of blue on a street sign, the smell of bread baking, the sound of children laughing, or the taste of a familiar coffee. It is in these moments that the migrant remembers and re/constructs “home.” Not shortly after comes the remembrance that “home” is likely no longer the way they left it. The memories relived in these moments can never be more than moments; these places cannot and do not exist in the ways that they do in the migrant’s memory. In this age of mass migration, Memory and Migration, originally published in 2011 and ... Read More

  • aka Marcel Duchamp: Meditations on the Identities of an Artist eds. by
Anne Collins Goodyear and James W. McManus (review)
    • Abstract: aka Marcel Duchamp is a collection of essays that addresses issues of biography and identity by exploring the artistic, cultural, and historical conditions of Marcel Duchamp’s construction of artistic identity and the underlying theoretical and gender implications in his work. But putting this volume together presents no easy task, given Duchamp’s explicit denunciation of the autobiographical genre: “I flatly refuse to write an autobiography. It has always been a hobby of mine to object to the written, I, I, I’s on the part of the artist” (Gough-Cooper and Caumont). Duchamp’s refusal reflects an unwillingness to underwrite the “I” as supreme subject that would consolidate and aggrandize the myth of authorial ... Read More
