  • Introduction: M4Bl and the Critical Matter of Black Lives
    • Abstract: We were exiting the doors of the first national convening of the Movement for Black Lives at Cleveland State University in the summer of 2015, plotting our strategy of how to leave the city when police cars were rolling deep, a visual show meant to intimidate those of us who had come together in defense of Black life. Just then, the crowd started running down the block, passing information back like a game of telephone as we ran. The police had arrested a teenager, a fourteen-year-old, for alleged public drunkenness. Buoyed by a weekend of collective radical imagining of what it would look like to build a world where Black lives can live and thrive, our comrades could simply not allow this young Black boy to be ... • Movement for Black Love: The Building of Critical Communities Through the
           Relational Geography of Movement Spaces
    • Abstract: We must love and protect each other….We have nothing to lose but our chains. This piece chronicles the journey of friendships and relationships that are created in movement spaces. Movement and organizing work can and sometimes do produce strains and pressure that rupture organizations and relationships. In writing this piece, I aim to celebrate the creation of new beginnings and the strengthening of bonds that exist despite the tensions and dynamics that arise within movement spaces that may destroy such bonds. In this work, I query the impossibility of such bonds and their requisite necessity for critical community. I posit that without bond formation that can withstand the pressure of collective assault ... Read More

  • Choreographies of the Ongoing: Episodes of Black Life, Events of Black
           Lives
    • Abstract: By the time autumn settles on the city and all of the leaves descend to the base of the tree that bore them, you can see a building from our home's back porch. Filled with two hundred twenty-one units at sixteen stories high, Wade Park Apartments peaks above barren trees and rooftops, glaring down at our home. Most times, this brick and concrete structure goes rather unnoticed. It's part of the neighborhood's landscape. But when we are assailed by the cutting reminder that on one of those floors, my father's sister, Ann, was murdered over thirty years ago, the building becomes a specter. For me, the reminder comes randomly. Sometimes, it's how one of the windows throws back the rays of the sun. Sometimes, the ... Read More

  • Black Lives as Snuff: The Silent Complicity in Viewing Black Death
    • Abstract: The aim of this photo essay, through simulated director cues, is to question viewers' intent in the consumption of videos that make a spectacle of the violence perpetrated on Black bodies. In the vein of the underlying principle of Black Lives Matter, does a Black life really matter for those of us who proclaim it' The ubiquity of social media has fostered an ever-increasing, mediated culture and mode of communication on the injustice of racialized violence. What are the politics of the gaze at play in this culture of viewing Black death' With the proliferation of videos that are taken from a scene, posted, and shared, have we truly become more engaged citizens, staunch activists, and effective community ... • R.I.P. Shirts or Shirts of the Movement: Reading the Death Paraphernalia
           of Black Lives
    • Abstract: R.I.P. (rest in peace) shirts, also known as memorial shirts, are significantly visible pieces in the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL).1 While the use of a hashtag is becoming an increasingly popular mode within the movement to memorialize individuals slain unjustly by police, these shirts, which are wearable memorials, are ever-present in the movement as well. Some people call them "protest shirts" because of their presence at M4BL protests. I believe calling them protest shirts is not a fully accurate portrayal, however, because this label means these shirts are only standing against something and not also for something. Whether displaying the name or face of the deceased person, or a quotation from a famous ... Read More

  • Black Lives Abroad: Encounters of Diasporic Solidarity in Brazil
    • Abstract: I am not only a casualty, I am also a warrior. For this very reason, when we fight for our rights, we fight alongside those who, all over the world, suffer the same discrimination, and whose grandfathers are our own: The victims of the greatest holocaust ever to occur in the history of mankind, the chattel slavery of Africans, which counted more than two hundred and twenty million victims.I am Black. I am a Black woman. I am a Black woman from New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States, but for several months, I have been living in Salvador, Bahia, in Brazil, conducting research about Afro-Brazilian percussion. It's nightfall as I walk back to my host family's house after an evening drumming lesson with my host ... Read More

  • Visible Black Motherhood is a Revolution
    • Abstract: I had a nightmare when my eldest daughter was three weeks old, the vividness of which still causes me to lose my breath. Like so many mothers of newborns, I had fallen asleep without realizing it, my daughter sleeping on my chest as I sat upright on the couch. In this sleep-deprived state, the image of a ferocious slave master entered my mind—there was a silent, unrelenting, and vicious struggle, and I could feel the sensation of his attempt to wrest my baby out of my arms until I screamed out in terror and he disappeared as quickly as he'd appeared. I woke my daughter and myself with my shrieking as I clenched her in my arms and cried, rocking us together back and forth. I dug my chin into the top of her head. It ... Read More

  • Mama's Gon' Buy You a Mocking Bird: Why #BlackMothersStillMatter: A Short
Genealogy of Black Mothers' Maternal Activism and Politicized Care
    • Abstract: Some problems we share as women, some we do not. You [white women] fear your children will grow up to join the patriarchy and testify against you; we fear our children will be dragged from a car and shot down in the street, and you will turn your backs on the reasons they are dying. When writing "Age, Race, Class, and Sex: Women Refining Difference" in 1980, Audre Lorde did not know Trayvon Martin. Yet the similarity between what Lorde is describing and our political situation today is chilling. In 2013, a Florida jury found George Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter, even though he shot a Black American teenager in the street in 2012. Of the jury who acquitted Zimmerman, all were women and ... Read More

  • Restoring Optimal Black Mental Health and Reversing Intergenerational
Trauma in an Era of Black Lives Matter
    • Abstract: Grandma was born moments before her mother took her last breath. The year was 1934. Her mother, my paternal great-grandmother, made a life-long promise with her husband's sister to take care of one another's children if one of them died. This was a time when maternal mortality was very common. My great grandmother knew this threat was very real. This was also a time in the American South when there weren't many public resources, such as orphanages, available for Black Americans to care for children. Too often, American Blacks experienced "separate but equal" public resources that were too often separate yet unequal. In a Southern city like the one in which my grandmother was born, there were even more limited ... Read More

  • #BlackHealingMatters in the Time of #BlackLivesMatter
    • Abstract: Below Deck—An InvitationA key feature of Black liberation under the frame of the Movement for Black Lives is an insistence on acknowledging trauma and prioritizing a healing justice framework, challenging the death grip our current capitalist system has on the quality of Black lives by offering up tools for healing. We work to forge a healing-centered praxis that is invested in both individual and structural transformation. This healing work is a process, and through the process we learn much about social, political, and economic structures, alongside our role in shaping, reshaping, or even dismantling those structures. These processes produce the context of Black living and our current understandings of Black ... Read More

  • From Ferguson to Palestine: Reimagining Transnational Solidarity Through
           Difference
    • Abstract: "Why are you coming into my country'" the agent at the immigration desk at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv asked me upon my arrival in Israel in January 2015. Although jarred by the woman's question, and the stern tone with which it was offered, I remained calm. I replied that I was visiting Israel on a two-week tour and that I would be visiting popular tourist sites in Jerusalem and Nazareth. I also mentioned that I was interested in seeing classic Christian religious sites like Mount Zion, the Via Dolorosa, and the Church of the Annunciation.Although everything that I told the agent was technically true, it was certainly not so in spirit. While I planned to visit each of the places that I mentioned ... Read More

  • Ferguson: An Identity Politics Liberation Manifesto
    • Abstract: I introduced myself to the national stages of the movement in August 2014 when the Ferguson police murdered Mike Brown Jr. in my hometown Saint Louis, Missouri. This is an open dialogue confessing many things I've never discussed before. A very deepened sense of depression has often remained present with me since shortly after the inception of this moment. I organize for Black liberation, I create art for art's sake, but I use this art to participate in what I believe is actually a cultural revolution. I spent most of last year wanting to hurt people. I had visions of taking someone's life and I felt these demons pulling my soul on the daily. I'd try to drown out the noise with heavy usage of marijuana and ... Read More
