  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: This is the first "Editor's Note" I have written for Biography, as the task has usually fallen to Craig Howes, who is currently making good use of a well-earned sabbatical, or to my coeditor Cindy Franklin. I'm happy to do it, as it gives me the opportunity to say what a pleasure it has been so far to serve as Acting Director of the Center for Biographical Research while Craig is away and to be more closely involved in the day-to-day operations of the Center and the journal. This is the second issue of Biography our new Managing Editor, Anjoli Roy, and I have seen through the production process from start to finish; the first was our special issue Caste and Life Narratives, which arrived from the printer just this ... • Barbara Harlow: A Remembrance via Conferences, Readings, and Questions
    • Abstract: Photograph of Barbara Harlow in her home in Austin, Texas.Reprinted by permission of the photographer, Tarek El-Ariss.The task of remembering Barbara Harlow is not easy for many reasons, not least among them that she was both formative and formidable to so many, as an example of a committed scholar and colleague, and most certainly as an exacting teacher. For her former students (like Shankar, John Zuern, and me), Barbara's insistence on a particular kind of historicizing is a critical lesson that undoubtedly marks both our scholarship and our teaching. What she meant by historicizing involved many things. It was not just a matter of what she called "vulgar empiricism"—the who, what, when, and where of history, all ... Read More

  • Why Does Life Writing Talk about Science': Foucault, Rousseau, and the
           Early Journal Intime
    • Abstract: Among all the discourses that practitioners of life writing adopt—from fiction, poetry, journalism, politics, and historiography, to mention just a few—the use of discourses from the natural sciences poses a particular problem for the reader. It is easy to appreciate the direct application to life writing of psychology, psychoanalysis, phenomenology, or other fields that possess their own conception of the self and its place in the world, but when an author employs terms from biology or meteorology or optics, we are necessarily faced with a more metaphorical use of language. Should this writing strategy be considered a superficial matter of presentation, perhaps as an attempt to garner some of the prestige of the ... Read More

  • Writing through Crisis: Time, History, Futurity in German Diaries of the
           Second World War
    • Abstract: Toward the end of the Second World War and in its immediate aftermath, an extraordinary number of Germans kept diaries. Contemporaries such as the writer Gerhard Nebel describe the time as an "era of diaries," not only because of the diaries later published by authors such as Ernst Jünger or André Gide but also because of the "countless diaries that were kept by unknown individuals during the war" (5). Writers mention receiving diaries as birthday, confirmation, and wedding gifts, being assigned diary writing in school, and in some instances even participating in diary competitions that the National Socialist Party organized.1 In other cases, the diary offered a private forum for resistance in which one could write ... • Derrida's Otobiographies
    • Abstract: . . . what interests me today is not strictly called either literature or philosophy. . . . "Autobiography" is perhaps the least inadequate name, because it remains for me the most enigmatic, the most open, even today. When asked to classify his writings under the domain of a single genre, Derrida refers us to the loosely defined notion of autobiography. This essay examines the autobiographical thread in Derrida's work to elaborate on the twin problem of identity and writing. The purpose of the essay is threefold. In the first part, I focus on Derrida's critique of the metaphysics of presence in traditional autobiography to develop an understanding of his notion of "otobiography." Derrida exposes the originary ... Read More

  • The Life and Struggles of Our Mother Walatta Petros: A Seventeenth-Century
African Biography of an Ethiopian Woman by Galawdewos (review)
    • Abstract: Ethiopia is home to one of the most ancient forms of Christianity, the history of which can be traced to the fourth century. The classical language of Ethiopia, Ge'ez, preserves a large body of indigenous literature of religious and secular importance, as well as many early Jewish and Christian texts translated from Egyptian Copto-Arabic exemplars. Original composition in the classical language continued into the early modern period in a range of genres, among the most popular of which were saints' lives, developed in the distinctive Ethiopian genre of gädl, as reflected in the text translated here as The Life and Struggles of Our Mother Walatta Petros. The Life and Struggles of Our Mother Walatta Petros is an ... • Speaking of the Self: Gender, Performance, and Autobiography in South Asia
ed. by Anshu Malhotra and Siobhan Lambert-Hurley (review)
    • Abstract: Speaking of the Self takes up the ambitious task of rewriting the practice of auto-biography research on South Asia. The point of departure for the ten studies making up the book lies at the intersection of gender and performance, two key theoretical concepts that serve as the backbone of the project. It is not surprising, therefore, that the question of how these concepts both shape women's autobiographical narratives in South Asia and impact their study emerges again and again in all the essays that make up this collection, setting up a coherent and interactive dialogue that engages readers interested in autobiography, women, gender, literature, or regional studies. Each chapter focuses on a different author (or ... • Women Write Iran: Nostalgia and Human Rights from the Diaspora by Nima
           Naghibi (review)
    • Abstract: Over the last several decades, the examination of Iranian women's writing, produced inside and outside of Iran, has been the subject of detailed and scholarly analyses in a number of books in English as well as in numerous essays.1 The diversity of global and theoretical approaches has produced varied opinions on the way these texts can be examined and read, each shedding light on a different angle of this complex body of work we call "Iranian women's writing." Among these, there have been studies on Iranian women's autobiographical narratives, a very popular genre that has peaked in the last two decades. This scholarship examines the popularity of this genre among Iranian—and other Middle Eastern women—and ... Read More

  • Navigating Loss in Women's Contemporary Memoir by Amy-Katerini Prodromou
           (review)
    • Abstract: In Navigating Loss in Women's Contemporary Memoir, Amy-Katerini Prodromou critically analyzes first-person narratives that challenge traditional paradigms of loss and recovery. Theoretical and professional models, she convincingly argues, do not adequately capture the complex and multilayered experience of bereavement. Complementary, or even corrective, to the existing paradigms, the memoirs in Prodromou's study expand our understanding of loss and grief in fundamental ways. They show that recovery is ambiguous at best, loss is never fully recoverable, and adaptation, rather than acceptance, marks the experience of living in the aftermath of loss.Grief memoirs, Prodromou points out, lend themselves to being ... • The Comics of Joe Sacco: Journalism in a Visual World ed. by Daniel Worden
           (review)
    • Abstract: Published in the Critical Approaches to Comics Artists series recently established at the University Press of Mississippi, Daniel Worden's edited collection on graphic journalist Joe Sacco's critically acclaimed work makes a valuable contribution to several intersecting fields: comics studies, memory and trauma studies, and journalism, as well as visual and popular culture. This is a welcome first full-length collection of essays on Sacco's graphic reportage, which is examined here by both emerging and established scholars whose work is structured into four sections: "The Form of Comics Journalism," "Space and Maps," "The Politics and Aesthetics of Joe Sacco," and "Drawing History, Visualizing World Politics."The ... • After Identity: Mennonite Writing in North America by Robert Zacharias
           (review)
    • Abstract: After Identity, Robert Zacharias's edited collection of essays on Mennonite writing in North America, is a crucial and timely call for a shift in Mennonite literary criticism.1 The book features twelve papers derived from a 2013 conference of the same name that convincingly argue in favor of turning away from the identity-focused critiques that seek to situate Mennonite literature in a cultural or religious context. Zacharias points out both in his introduction and, in more substantial detail, his earlier book, Rewriting the Break Event, that Mennonite literature, in Canada at least, emerged in an era that saw the marketability of cultural and ethnic difference (Rewriting 42–43). Thus, identity became a central ... Read More

  • The Rise of the Memoir by Alex Zwerdling (review)
    • Abstract: Over twenty-five years ago, I had the good fortune to spend a productive year at the National Humanities Center working on a book about family photos. Although the year was meant to be devoted to individual research and writing, the Center encouraged fellows to form seminars on areas of common interest. Some of us welcomed the chance to explore the attractions and the pitfalls of the personal academic writing with which scholars had begun to experiment, particularly in feminist circles. Nancy K. Miller's recently published Getting Personal commented, in part, on the personal writings of a number of colleagues at Duke who had joined in a formidable writing group experimenting with these new forms. We hoped and in ... Read More
