  • "My Birth is My Fatal Accident": introduction to caste and life narratives
    • Abstract: This special issue of Biography foregrounds "caste" and "life narratives" as reciprocally generative sites of serious study. We begin with the notion that the conjunction of a social phenomenon called "caste" with a genre of representation called "life narratives" deserves special scholarly attention. We are not the first to bring caste and life narratives together in this manner. As the essays collected here as well as the Selected Bibliography attest, this issue builds on previously existing work. We acknowledge such work while proposing that the essays here are unprecedented in the range of languages, archives, cultural traditions, and subgenres engaged, as well as in the kinds of theoretical discussions ... • Speaking Self , Writing Caste: Recovering the Life of Santram BA
    • Abstract: Santram BA (1887–1988), reproduced courtesy of Madhu Chadha, granddaughter of Santram BA.Santram BA,1 who lived for 101 years (d. 1988), was a veteran Hindi writer and a radical caste social reformer from Punjab. He published more than one hundred books and booklets, including his autobiography, Mere Jeevan ke Anubhav (Experiences of My Life). A member of the Arya Samaj, he founded the Jat-Pat Torak Mandal (Organization to Break Caste, henceforth JPTM) in 1922. In spite of his vast writing repertoire, Santram has been marginalized in academic scholarship. His claim to fame has largely been that he invited B. R. Ambedkar to deliver the keynote address at the May 15, 1936, annual conference of the JPTM. However, the ... Read More

  • The Dalit Personal Narrative In Hindi: Reflections On A Long Literary
           Lineage
    • Abstract: Swami Achhutanand Harihar's poem, "Manusmriti Is Burning Us," which was written sometime between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, is no doubt one of the earliest statements, in Hindi, made by a member of the so-called "untouchable" castes of Hinduism against Hinduism's varna-based social order. But what is remarkable about the composition is that, apart from its sharp critique of the exploitation and the oppressiveness inherent in the birth-determined caste system, it is also an articulation of a radical self-consciousness on the part of a caste subject who belongs to the most downtrodden ranks of India's Hindu population. In fact Achhutanand deployed the term "Dalit" as a signifier of the ... Read More

  • Tamil Dalit Literature: Aesthetics, Politics, and Life Narratives
    • Abstract: The emergence of Dalit literature in Tamil in the forms of poetry, short stories, plays, novels, and life narratives, along with subsequent Dalit criticism, has enriched Tamil literature in unprecedented ways, demanding that the literary canon shift while redefining the field of aesthetics. Life narratives have a special significance in the field of Dalit literature across India. Though life narratives were not a prominent mode of Dalit literary experiments in Tamil, the sensibilities that are generated around life narratives in general, I suggest, do play a significant role in constituting what Tamil Dalit literature is. That is to say, life narratives are not merely part of Dalit literature but in many ways these ... Read More

  • Bending Biography: The Creative Intrusions of "Real Lives" in Dalit
           Fiction
    • Abstract: This essay interrogates two contemporary literary negotiations of the twentieth-century biographies of M. K. Gandhi, B. R. Ambedkar, and Dhanpat Rai Srivastava, better known as the towering icon of modern Hindi literature, "Munshi" Premchand, as well as the broader politics of their twenty-first-century resurrection and reevaluation. I focus on the writings of Uday Prakash and Ajay Navaria, both contemporary Delhi-based Hindi-language authors who write about the dynamics of caste in contemporary India,1 to consider each author's innovative usages of metafictional narrative techniques to blur the boundaries between "real" and fictional life narratives. I argue that reading these texts through the critical lens of ... Read More

  • Periyar as a Biopic: Star Persona, Historical Events, and Politics
    • Abstract: What do we expect when we go to watch a biopic' In most cases, "a slice of history" would be the immediate response, which then leads to questions regarding the challenges of representing history through a (sometimes larger than life) protagonist and the balancing of the personal and the political or the domestic and the public. The biopic of Periyar E. V. Ramasami, the radical leader from South India, offers an ideal space for an interesting and absorbing narrative, as his life, both in the private and the public spheres, was consistently marked by provocative and subversive acts aimed at challenging the status quo of a highly conservative, religious, and casteist society through his championing the cause of ... • Affective Returns: Biopics as Life Narratives
    • Abstract: P. K. Rosy, known as both Rosamma and Rajamma, the heroine of the first-ever local film production in Kerala, has made appearances in Kerala's contemporary history in numerous ways. "The Actress's Night," a poem that Malayalam poet Kureeppuzha Sreekumar wrote in 2003 is one such visitation. My attempt in this essay is to take a fragment of P. K. Rosy's life and weave a textured fabric from the uneven warp and weft of her life narratives, cinema, and political history. Rosy (P. K. Rosy's screen name) was the heroine of the first ever local film production, Vigatakumaran (The Lost Child) in Thiruvithamkoor, also known as Travancore. Belonging to a Dalit Christian family, Rosy was a laborer in the paddy fields of ... Read More

  • Caste Life Narratives, Visual Representation, And Protected Ignorance
    • Abstract: This essay is an attempt to interrogate certain visual manifestations as a perceptual means of understanding and to approach caste and life narratives from the conceptual framework of "protected ignorance." Caste life narratives are typically regarded as literary works, but they have also become subjects of visual language, wherein experiences of caste life become a means to create visual metaphors as potential critiques of the hegemonic and the normative in dominant Indian society. This essay is concerned with the experiences of caste life and attempts to move away from narratives of "protected ignorance."Colonial India saw the production of four dominant modes of discourse in understanding Indian history and ...            Discrimination in Modern Maharashtra
    • Abstract: The Tamasha (traveling folk theater) legend Vithabai Narayangavkar sang a famous Lavani (folk song) in the 1960s:laaj dhara pavana janachi manachipotasathi nachatey mee parva kunachidava dola jhakun khunavu naka, ho asa tumhi hinavu nakaaathavan dete mee tarnya panachipotasathi nachatey mee parva kunachi[O guest, maintain your shame for others as well as for yourself. I am dancing to earn my livelihood; I do not care for anybody else. Do not make sexual gestures by winking your left eye at me. You are actually mocking me. I am helping you remember your youth. • Brahmanical Activism As Eco-Casteism: Reading The Life Narratives Of
Bindeshwar Pathak, Sulabh International, And "Liberated" Dalits
    • Abstract: It is a historic day. From now onward, the liberated manual scavengers of Alwar will call themselves Brahmins. They can become high-caste Brahmins. By being Brahmins, their mind is filled with emotions and their body is shivering. They are getting high.I took the help of sociology and decided to help them to perform rites, rituals and ceremonies of the upper castes people.Bindeshwar Pathak is a Brahmin who works among "manual scavengers" who are considered to be among the lowest, most polluted, and most degraded "untouchable" castes by birth and are often assigned to the work of cleaning dry latrines and carrying human excreta. In the 1970s Pathak launched Sulabh International, his scheme of Sulabh Shauchalaya, and ... Read More

  • Invisibility of "Other" Dalits and Silence in the Law
    • Abstract: "An ounce of illustration is worth more than a pound of theory."For the first time, the 2011 census of India counted a population "other" than male or female. This essay takes a cue from the census and traces the invisibility of "other" Dalits, while attempting to break the silence about them in the law through life narratives. Formerly considered "untouchable" in the deeply unequal and hierarchical caste system of India, Dalits are also known as Scheduled Castes (SC) in the legal parlance.1 The invisibility of "other" Dalits and the silence about them is located in an emerging legal moment in which transgender persons are compared with "untouchable" Dalits, but there is no legal understanding of persons who are ... • Stories Of Dalit Diaspora: Migration, Life Narratives, And Caste In The Us
    • Abstract: Nayyirah Waheed's poignant and visceral words "you broke the ocean in / half to be here. / only to meet nothing that wants you.—immigrant" (4) animate the lived realities of countless nameless and faceless immigrants whose struggles to exist and belong cross time and space. Every day and in myriad ways the diaspora has survived and performed the pain of leaving; some find home in their destinations while others endure the trauma of remaining perpetual foreigners; their narratives are rarely recorded and, when recited, easily overlooked. Yet they persevere and rise to tell their stories because stories, as Thenmozhi Soundararajan has reiterated, are "the most important unit of social change" especially for groups ... Read More

  • Caste in Japan: The Burakumin
    • Abstract: The narrow street is lined with people squatting on small stools tending steaming pots of boiled innards; behind them hang hunks of raw meat. Children joyfully run loose, kicking up dust as they shuffle back and forth, hiding in between the crevasses of the wooden walls that demarcate one space from another. Weaving in and out of upturned bicycles, plastic furniture, and odd wares for sale, dodging adult cries to calm down, are the mischievous faces of youth, testing their limits. While I am a stranger in this community, we muster little attention because my host, Professor Hideo Aoki, is known in the area, a longstanding human rights advocate and scholar and, more importantly, a trusted friend. To him a nod is ... Read More

  • Acknowledgments
    • Abstract: The idea for this special issue emerged two years ago. Since then, the two of us have exchanged hundreds of emails, collaborated on every aspect of it, and have had many spirited conversations around caste and life narratives. In this journey, we got tremendous encouragement and inspiration from many colleagues, friends, and fellow travelers. As this issue of the journal comes to fruition, we wish to offer our deep appreciation to the coeditors of Biography (Cynthia Franklin, Craig Howes, and John David Zuern) for their expert knowledge of life narratives, for their unstinting support at every step, and for their extreme generosity.Biography made it possible for all the contributors to come together at the ...
