  • Editors’ Note
    • Abstract: The current issue of Asian Perspectives (Volume 55, issue 2) maintains the tradition of keeping readers in touch with new archaeological research findings, approaches, and ideas across the Asia-Pacific region. As always, each work has a geographic focus that refers to substantive datasets from particular places as concrete examples, yet is broadly relevant to research in other regions. Looking into the journal’s future volumes and issues, we invite new manuscripts that emphasize the larger implications of Asian and Pacific archaeological studies beyond geographic boundaries. Over the past year, the journal has moved to online electronic management of all new manuscripts and reviews, at ... Read More

  • Aleti Tunu Bibi: Contextualizing a New Rock Art Site in East Timor and the
           Wider Asia-Pacific Region
    • Abstract: The Asia-Pacific region has a long tradition of rock art, dating back some 40,000 years to the same period in which the practice first appeared in Europe (Taçon et al. 2014). In Southeast Asia (SEA), hunter-gatherers were making rock art well before the Neolithic. Uranium series dating suggests that hand stencils and paintings in Sulawesi and possibly Timor were made between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago (Aubert et al. 2007; Aubert et al. 2014; Bulbeck 2004; O’Connor et al. 2010; Taçon et al. 2014), and approximately 9000 years ago in East Kalimantan (Borneo) (Chazine 2005; Plagnes et al. 2003). Although rock art definitely occurred in early antiquity in the region, the vast majority of the 440 or so rock art sites ... Read More

  • Mortuary Caves and the Dammar Trade in the Towuti–Routa Region,
Sulawesi, in an Island Southeast Asian Context
    • Abstract: This article describes the sequence of mortuary practices and associated funerary items in the Towuti–Routa region of Sulawesi during the first and second millennia a.d. in the context of the broad chronology of similar customs documented elsewhere across Island Southeast Asia (ISEA). In particular, the mortuary sequence in Towuti–Routa is compared with sequences spanning the centuries a.d. in Old Luwu to the immediate west. Trade in dammar gum, which was used to coat mortuary vessels, was an economic mainstay in Old Luwu and Towuti–Routa at the time of European contact. Dammar gum is investigated for its potential role in financing the import of exotic goods, underpinning regional networks that facilitated the ... Read More

  • Settlement Chronologies and Shifting Resource Exploitation in Ka‘ū
           District, Hawaiian Islands
    • Abstract: We report on re-analysis of two Ka‘ū District collections from Hawai‘i Island to demonstrate what can be learned when applying new research questions to old collections. Our research goals center on two main themes: re-dating the HA-B22-64 and -248 sites to place them within the newly refined Hawaiian archipelago settlement chronology and using diverse data sources to look at changing resource use in pre-Contact Hawai‘i through time. The case study tackles questions concerning island settlement and changing resource use in the Hawaiian Islands located in remote East Polynesia. Our application of targeted AMS dating of identified wood charcoal allows us to refine the settlement sequence for Hawai‘i Island, similar ... Read More

  • Turquoise Ornaments and Inlay Technology in Ancient China
    • Abstract: Inlays are small fragments of material embedded in objects made of different media. The purpose of inlay is to enhance the beauty of objects by adding color and texture. Archaeological researchers in China have documented the earliest use of inlays to the Middle Neolithic period (c. 3300 b.c.). During that era, the most common material used for inlay was bone, while turquoise was rare. Turquoise inlay became popular starting in the Late Neolithic period (c. 2500 b.c.). Turquoise inlays are more interesting and attractive than bone inlays, and they continued to play an important decorative role through the Erlitou Culture period (c. 1900–1600 b.c.) around the Yellow River region. During the transition from ... Read More

  • A Tale of Two Giants: Wilhelm G. Solheim II (1924–2014) and William A.
           Longacre Jr. (1937–2015)
    • Abstract: The history of the beginning of any field of study is probably most understandable through an examination of the lives of the men and women who were the first students in that field than it is through a direct examination of the field. This essay is not so much an obituary or combined obituaries as a personal appreciation of two archaeologists, Wilhelm G. Solheim II and William A. Longacre Jr., both of whom profoundly affected their home universities, Philippines studies, and the lives of many scholars. For this tale of two giants, I draw on my own and others’ memories, writings of others cited herein, and an amazingly detailed vita in my possession covering Bill Solheim’s work from 1947 through ... • Brian Vincent (26 March 1938–30 March 2016)
    • Abstract: Dr. Brian Vincent, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA), died in 2016 just a few days after his 78th birthday. Brian came to archaeology in 1975. After a successful career as a builder, he enrolled in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Otago for his B.A. His deep interest in the discipline led to his undertaking doctoral research at the Thai Bronze and Iron Age site of Ban Na Di, where he analyzed ceramic artifacts. Following a period of study at Southampton with David Peacock FSA, he examined an assemblage of mortuary vessels and occupation ceramics, the first analysis of its kind in Southeast Asia. His identification of local and trade vessels on the basis of temper variations ... Read More
