  • The Integration of Jewish Refugees from Shanghai into Post-World War II
           San Francisco
    • Abstract: The transnational story of "Shanghai Jews" began in 1938 after the Nazi annexation of Austria (Anschluss) and the November pogroms (Kristallnacht), when German and Austrian Jews sought to escape the inferno. Shanghai, which was one of the few places in the world that did not require an entry visa, offered one possible route out.2 In their quest to get there, more than 16,000 Jews rode on trains through the Brenner Pass on the Austrian-Italian border and embarked on ocean liners in Genoa. After that path closed in June 1940, they traveled on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Vladivostok, where they boarded ships bound for Shanghai via Japan.3 Those trains and ships carried them to safety in Asia's largest port, a city ... • Policing the Jewish Quarter: Progressive Law Enforcement and Jewish
Vigilantism in the Age of Mass Migration, 1900–1920
    • Abstract: From the turn of the twentieth century to the United States' entry into World War I, American Jews proved largely amenable to the liberal politics of progressivism.1 But Jews in New York City over this period found themselves in profound disagreement with municipal reformers over the future of law enforcement, especially the policing of immigrant communities. As organized criminal networks emerged in Jewish immigrant urban enclaves, Jewish community leaders and progressive government officials offered competing approaches to preventing illegal behavior among Jews.2 Jewish activists with the Kehillah-Jewish Community of New York—a federation of Jewish organizations, charities, and social service agencies—came into ... • Print to Fit: The New York Times, Zionism and Israel 1896–2016 by
           Jerold S. Auerbach (review)
    • Abstract: It is an article of faith among many American Jews that The New York Times is anti-Israel. Jerold Auerbach seeks to validate that belief in Print to Fit, a book whose awkward title (a play on the Times famous slogan, "All the News That's Fit to Print") foreshadows the exertions Auerbach goes through to reach that conclusion.Auerbach, a Wellesley College emeritus professor of history, has seemingly read every Times editorial, opinion column, letter to the editor and news story published on first Palestine and then Israel since Adolf Ochs purchased the newspaper in 1896. That Ochs and his son-in-law successor Arthur Sulzberger were anti-Zionists (non-Zionist, as they put it) is incontrovertible. They shared the ... Read More

  • Wasserman Prize
    • Abstract: With gratitude to the Wasserman Prize committee (Marc Dollinger, Tony Michels, and Beth Wenger), The American Jewish Historical Society is pleased to announce this year's winner of the Wasserman Prize, awarded for the best article published in the 2019 volume of American Jewish History:Marni Davis (Georgia State University), "Toward an 'Immigrant Turn' in Jewish Entrepreneurial History: A View from the New South," 103, no. 4 (2019): 429–456.After praising the stellar quality of the entire 2019 volume, the committee had this to say: Marni Davis's article marshals original research in support of a new comparative framework for understanding Jewish economic activity. The depth and breadth of her article and its ... Read More

  • Splendor, Decline, and Rediscovery of Yiddish in Latin America ed. by
Malena Chinski and Alan Astro (review)
    • Abstract: Splendor, Decline, and Rediscovery of Yiddish in Latin America, edited by Malena Chinski and Alan Astro, is a scholarly labor of love. The contributors comprise an international group of historians, archivists, literary scholars, and journalists, who in some cases are also descendants of their very subjects. The current volume provides a different perspective than Alan Astro's 2003 anthology of selections from Yiddish works translated for an English-speaking audience, who might not have considered that there are Jews in [name the Latin American or Caribbean country], or Eliahu Toker's El ídish es también Latinoamérica, published the same year for a Spanish-speaking public. Transnational in scope and authorship ... Read More

  • Making Judaism Safe for America: World War I and the Origins of Religious
           Pluralism by Jessica Cooperman (review)
    • Abstract: In February 1943, the SS Dorchester, a US military vessel, was sunk by a German submarine. As the vessel went down, four military chaplains gave up their lifeboats, sacrificing themselves to save their comrades. They led the crew in prayers as the ship sank, representing America's three major religions: two Protestants, one Catholic, and one Jew.It's a great story, but it was not the first time the military served as a laboratory for religious pluralism in the United States. Jessica Cooperman's excellent book convincingly demonstrates that the framework for "Tri-Faith America," a phrase generally applied to the post-World War II era, in fact began with American involvement in the First World War. Government ... Read More

  • Global Jewish Foodways: A History ed. by Hasia R. Diner and Simone Cinotto
           (review)
    • Abstract: In 2014, Hasia R. Diner and Simone Cinotto organized a conference called "The Global History of Jewish Food" in Pollenzo, Italy, with funding from the Goldstein-Goren Foundation. Better organizers would be hard to imagine. Diner is author of a key book in our understanding of foodways and the United States immigrant experience, Hungering for America: Italian, Irish, and Jewish Foodways in the Age of Migration (1991), among many other works. Cinotto, also prolific, is similarly well-versed on food in the immigrant experience as the author of The Italian American Table: Food, Family, and Community in New York City (2013). Global Jewish Foodways is an outgrowth of their conference, with a dream roster of historians of ... Read More

  • Modernity and the Jews: Western Social Thought by Chad Allan Goldberg
           (review)
    • Abstract: The complex relationships between Judaism and modernity have occupied Jewish and non-Jewish thinkers ever since the emergence of the changes and processes we tend to call "modernity": Enlightenment and Haskalah, Jewish emancipation, antisemitism, mass immigration, nationalism, Zionism, the Shoah, etc. What is the place of modernity for the Jews' What role did Jews and Jewish identity play in the making of modernity in Europe, America, Israel, and elsewhere' How should these roles be evaluated in light of the last two centuries' What are the relationships between those inner and external dimensions of Jewish existence' No contemporary observer of Jewish life, no historian, no religious leader of any of the various ... • The Soul of Judaism: Jews of African Descent in America by Bruce D. Haynes
           (review)
    • Abstract: The relationship between African Americans and Jews in the United States has long occupied a central place not only in the academy but also in American Jewish public life. Variously romanticized and vilified, the supposed "black-Jewish" alliance often assumes that the identity categories—black and Jewish—are mutually exclusive. In The Soul of Judaism, Bruce D. Haynes skillfully uncovers the history of Jews of African descent in America and, in doing so, offers a powerful corrective to academic and public cultures typically oriented toward the experience of American Jews of European descent. Historicizing American racial and ethnic categories thus allows Haynes to identify black Jews in America who have put forward ... Read More

  • A Hundred Acres of America: The Geography of Jewish American Literary
           History by Michael Hoberman (review)
    • Abstract: A Hundred Acres of America: The Geography of Jewish American Literary History seems to promise an encyclopedic volume of ambitious scope about the places that have inspired Jewish American writers and that their work has helped bring alive. That book should be written—but it is not the book at hand, and readers who come to this book with such grand expectations will be disappointed. Rather, Michael Hoberman explores the role of "place" in the work of a handful of Jewish American writers. These explorations do not cohere around a grand narrative. What Hoberman does give us is a series of original and stimulating meditations on a collection of eclectic figures. Despite Hoberman's assertion in the introduction that ... Read More

  • Women of Valor: Orthodox Jewish Troll Fighters, Crime Writers, and Rock
Stars in Contemporary Literature and Culture by Karen E.H. Skinazi
           (review)
    • Abstract: In Women of Valor, Karen E. H. Skinazi challenges portrayals of Orthodox Jewish women in popular culture as meek, oppressed, and dowdy. She contrasts representations of women in literature, visual art, and film with cultural works created by community insiders and with the reality of women's experiences. Using literary analysis, she discusses the lives of Orthodox women and their cultural works to demonstrate that women have voices, express agency and are far more complex than they are often portrayed as being by those outside of their communities.Focusing on Hasidic and Yeshivish women, Skinazi debunks a number of stereotypes. She posits that with rising fundamentalism in the Orthodox world, outside writers and ... Read More

  • The Learning of the Jews and the Language of the Germans: Edward Isaacson
in Utah and the Hebrew Book of Mormon
    • Abstract: In March 1888, a German-speaking man purporting to be a doctor and a rabbi arrived by train in Salt Lake City, which was then still a settlement in Utah Territory. He sent his card to Angus M. Cannon, president of the Salt Lake City Stake—an organization akin to a diocese within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)—who "was delighted to join in prayer through Jesus."2 After an overnight, the visitor caught the next train to Provo, where he was met at the station by Joseph Marion Tanner, the principal and German professor of Brigham Young Academy (later University), who had recently returned from a mission to Jerusalem. "A Jewish Ex-Rabbi in Town," announced a notice in Provo's Utah Enquirer. ... Read More

  • Whose Jewishness' Inbal Dance Theater and Cold War American
           Spectatorship
    • Abstract: Jewish dance critic Ann Barzel recorded companies in Chicago with her wind-up camera from a downstage theater wing or the stage's edge.2 Her film of the Tel Aviv-based Inbal Yemenite Dance Group (Inbal Dance Theater) in March 1958 shows this powerhouse company under the artistic direction of Sara Levi-Tanai.3 The dancers lead swooping kicks into hovering jumps that land in deep, spongy pliés, initiate rhythmic foot patterns with petite sweeping ankle kicks, and embellish them with polycentric hip isolations and measured claps. Geometric floor designs melt away as dancers reassemble in new formations, sometimes dipping under bridges formed by each other's arms. Inbal's tall headdresses of wound fabric, head shawls ... • Jewish Genetic Potency: The Meaning of Jewish Ancestry in the 21st-Century
           United States
    • Abstract: A person spits into a vial and sends it off to a privately held company. In a matter of weeks, that person receives maps, graphs, and figures representing the makeup of their genetic ancestry extending back generations and across continents.1 They look into the camera, read the results aloud to an online audience, and express either shock, confusion, or vindication. This is the general script of an emergent online genre, "DNA reveal videos," which now in 2019 have come to populate the leading video hosting site, YouTube, by the hundreds. In these videos, genetic knowledge generates meaning and new ways to define the self, all conveyed through the narrative element of the "reveal"—of exposing what is inside. What ... Read More
