  • Mud, glorious mud : Cape Town, Winter, 1977
    • Authors: Christopher Gregorowski
Abstract: In the winter of 1977, one of the most severe of Cape winters, the South African government began a process of demolition of shacks in informal settlements (then known as "squatter camps") which housed African people, mainly from the Transkei and Ciskei "homelands". Most of the men in these settlements were in Cape Town legally and were legally employed. However, they were not content to live in hostels or other single quarters, and had brought their wives and young children to live with them, which was possible only in the informal settlements, but illegal. Some men and most of the women worked informally or were seeking work, and were in Cape Town illegally. The Western Cape was then a Coloured Labour Preference area and closed to all "bantu" other than those with specific permission to work there.

  • The history of Rondebosch Common
    • Authors: Joanne Eastman
Abstract: The history of Rondebosch Common is very much intertwined with the history of Cape Town and its people. Some wise decisions over the centuries have preserved it for public use and the Common now enjoys provincial heritage status.

  • The Volunteer Drill Hall recycled : Central Library, Cape Town
    • Authors: John Rennie
Abstract: Central Library was formally opened on 29 July 2008 by the then Executive Mayor Helen Zille together with Vartan Gregorian, President of the Carnegie Corporation jointly presiding at the Parade Street marquee-covered function. The City of Cape Town had taken a bold decision in 2004 to relocate the city library from the City Hall to its neighbor, the old Volunteer Drill Hall. The conservation and alteration of this building would fulfil the City's vision of establishing their library in its own identifiable and better equipped venue.

  • The 90th anniversary of the Salt River railway accident
    • Authors: Jeremy Lawrence
Abstract: Certain calamities - calamities that elicit shock and that provide tales of human suffering, bravery, miraculous escapes - are so distressingly evocative that they remain etched in the public memory for decades. The railway crash that occurred in the late afternoon of Wednesday, 9 June 1926 on Cape Town's suburban line is one of these. And because the population of the Cape Peninsula in those days was relatively small, it seemed that almost everyone knew - or knew of - somebody who had travelled on the fateful train.

  • The historic roads of Rondebosch
    • Authors: Peter Hart
Abstract: According to Cor Pama, the Main Road may be regarded as not merely historic, but prehistoric: "It is not unreasonable to assume that some track around the mountain must have existed since time immemorial."

  • The Liesbeek : 1852-1913
    • Authors: Esme Bull
Abstract: Whenever and wherever new settlements are established, a supply of water is essential. Hence, Van Riebeeck's choice of the Liesbeek as a nucleus for expansion. As the settlement grew, keeping the river clean became a priority, especially as residents in Rondebosch and neighbouring areas were wholly dependent on the river and wells for water for domestic use and drinking.

  • A history of the Friends of the Liesbeek
    • Authors: Liz Wheeler
Abstract: The Liesbeek, a nine-kilometre thread through the Cape Town suburbs of Bishopscourt, Newlands (past the Josephine Mill), Rondebosch and Mowbray, is a fascinating river. Firstly, it is most unusual for a river to have its source and mouth in the same city. The Liesbeek rises on the eastern face of Table Mountain; north of the South African Astronomical Observatory, it joins the Black River which flows into Table Bay. There are various theories about the name "Liesbeek", but probably the most apt is the deriviation from the Dutch words "lies" meaning reeds and "beek" meaning stream.

  • Trovato House
    • Authors: Helen Robinson
Abstract: When Carl Jeppe arrived in Wynberg, he knew that he had found the ideal place to build a house and he engaged a well-known architect to design it and to supervise its construction high on the gentle slope of Wynberg Hill. From this vantage point there are magnificent views in all directions, and from each of the many windows and balconies of the house, a new perspective on the surrounding countryside is visible.

  • Fort de Goede Hoop
    • Authors: Zephney L. Kennedy
Abstract: No sooner had Jan van Riebeeck arrived in Table Bay at the Cape on 6 April 1652, than he held a meeting on board ship on 8 April to discuss the construction of a fortress in accordance with his instructions from Die Here XVII, the Board of Directors of the Dutch East India Company. The land to be used had already been selected on 7 April so the inspection and measuring began immediately after the meeting and continued until 9 April when the demarcation of the site was complete.

  • From vine to wine : early wine-making in Table Valley and beyond
    • Authors: Adrienne Folb; Patricia Davison
Abstract: The planting of vines at the Cape started a few years after Jan van Riebeeck had established an outpost of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) at "De Kaapsche Vlek" on the southern tip of Africa. In July of 1655, at van Riebeeck's request, three containers of vine cuttings and seeds arrived from the Company in Holland. The Dutch themselves were not producers of wine but acted as middlemen, shipping French, Spanish and Rhine wines to countries around Europe and England, so it was easy enough for the VOC administrators to send vine slips to the Cape. Thus arrived the first batch of vine cuttings, most likely vitis vinifera - the matriarch of the majority of old world cultivars and the primary source of wine and table grapes. There is no real certainty as to which specific cultivars were initially sent to the Cape, and for the following century there is a lack of clarity about exactly which grapes were grown here. However, experts seem to agree that Greengrape (Semillon), White French (Palomino), Steen (Chenin Blanc) and Hanepoot (Muscat of Alexandria) were the most likely cultivars first grown at the Cape.

  • An account of the narrative of the shipwreck of the French vessel the Eole
on the coast of Kaffraria in April 1829
    • Authors: D.J. Culpin
Abstract: The Narrative of the Shipwreck of the Eole, by Charles Etienne Boniface, is a fascinating and largely forgotten text about an equally fascinating and largely forgotten shipwreck. The bare bones of the event are recorded in the South African Commercial Advertiser of Saturday, 29 May 1829 as follows: 'The Eole, of Bordeaux, from Calcutta and Bourbon, was wrecked about day-break, on the morning of Sunday the 12th of April, after much previous bad weather, near the mouth of the small River Guanga, about 30 miles to the westward of the Bashee.' Boniface's Narrative, published in November 1829, recounts the adventures of the eight survivors of the Eole from the time of the shipwreck until their departure from Cape Town five months later. The text passed almost unnoticed at the time of its publication and, like the shipwreck itself, has subsequently received very little attention from historians and scholars.

  • The unprincipled Mr Parker
    • Authors: Esme Bull
Abstract: William Parker, a merchant of Cork, decided in 1819 to take advantage of a government scheme encouraging emigration to the Cape. Men of substance were asked to gather groups of able-bodied men, single or married, and to act as leaders to parties formed. Parker applied for permission to form a party, but demanded to be allocated land at Knysna. He offered his services as (1) Superintendent of Knysna forest, (2) Colonel of the Militia, and (3) Landdrost (magistrate) of George and also suggested that he be appointed to take charge of the whole scheme.

  • History of Vista High School, Cape Town and its origin with St Andrew's
           Presbyterian Church
    • Authors: Sigi Howes
Abstract: The school's roots go back to 1841, when the St Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Somerset Road started a mission school for the children of freed slaves in the inner city. The slaves had been freed in 1838 and that year the Church established a mission with Dr Adamson (Minister at St Andrews) and Rev. G W Stegmann (2nd Minister at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strand Street) and started to work among the coloured slave population.

Abstract: A distinguished Honorary Life member of the Historical Society of Cape Town, Phillida Audrey Fairbridge Brooke-Simons died on 29 July 2013 and we remember her with deep affection in this memorial to her life and work. Her contribution to historical literature was considerable, particularly in recording the history of the old buildings in the Cape and the lives of those who have contributed to progress in South Africa.
