Abstract: This 8th issue of Arabian Humanities appears in a critical and turbulent context. The war in Yemen has entered its second year, opposing on the one hand the government forces recognized by the international community and backed by an “Arab coalition” and, on the other, Houthi “rebel” forces supported by former President ‘Alī ‘Abdallāh Ṣāliḥ. With strikes from above by the Saudi-led “coalition”, civilians find themselves caught up in chaos, epidemics, lack of water, food and care. The international community is displaying a shocking indifference, while the Yemenis are counting their dead: nearly 10,000 in the early summer. Those who have been found shelter elsewhere are tortured by helplessness, as, tragically, the situation grows worse day after day. The ostracization of the Shiites – among which the Zaydis — has also reached Qatar, accused of complacency regarding the Iranian regime and Islamic “terrorism”. The Arabian Peninsula seems to be descending into madness, as King Salmān an...

  • The Horse in Arabia and the Arabian Horse: Origins, Myths and Realities

    • Authors: Jérémie Schiettecatte, Abbès Zouache
Abstract: Publishing an issue devoted to the horse in Arabia and in Arabian culture stems from the discovery of equid statues on the Neolithic site of al‑Maqar (Saudi Arabia) in 2010. This discovery was prematurely presented as the earliest testimony of horse breeding and horse riding. It was dated to 7,300–6,700 BC —i.e. 3,500 years before the first evidence of horse domestication known so far. It has stirred up controversy about the ongoing issue of horse domestication, against a background of ideological debate. It has also been an indication to the critical place given to horsemanship and horse breeding in the Arabian Peninsula. Gathering contributions on the topic of the horse in Arabia and the place of the Arabian horse in the medieval Islamic world allows us to draw an overview of the current knowledge about the issue of the introduction of the horse to Arabia (see Robin and Antonini), of the origin of the Arabian breed (see Olsen), of the significance and contribution of Arabian rock a...

  • Michael Farquhar, Circuits of Faith: Migration, Education and the Wahhabi
           Mission

    • Authors: Philippe Pétriat
Abstract: Using the concept of what he calls a “transnational religious economy” centered on the Islamic University of Medina (IUM), Michael Farquhar’s Circuits of Faith is an important and historicized contribution to the debate over the export of Wahhabism and its role in global Salafism. The detailed history of the IUM is probably the main interest of this book based on an array of IUM publications (syllabuses) and interviews. It deals with historicized facts and provides precise knowledge of one of the leading Saudi educative and missionary institutions. Farquhar focuses on this specific university and on some of its founders, scholars and interviewed students, in order to allow him to go beyond generalizations about Saudi proselytism. The first two chapters of the book emphasize the old history of missionary education in the Hejaz during the Ottoman, Sharifian and Saudi periods before the foundation of the IUM in 1961. One might regret that chapter 1 deals mainly with secondary sources a...

  • Horse Armour in the Medieval Islamic Middle East

    • Authors: David Nicolle
Abstract: The widely held view that horse armour was not used in the early Islamic Middle East is incorrect. Whereas horse armour is clearly mentioned in the documentary record, but is almost absent from iconographic sources, it may be also present in the archaeological record. However, this latter field remains enigmatic and barely studied. It is also often difficult to distinguish between coverings with a protective function and those without. This article seeks to present and interpret the available evidence, with particular reference to the Arabian Peninsula and neighbouring regions.

  • Insight on the Ancient Arabian Horse from North Arabian Petroglyphs

    • Authors: Sandra L. Olsen
Abstract: The origin of the Arabian horse breed has been the topic of much speculation. The earliest clear depictions of horses with Arabian attributes are in Egyptian New Kingdom tomb art, although they were likely first obtained as war booty during Asian battles. Rock art from the 1st millennium BCE to early 1st millennium CE indicates a possible start date for their arrival in the Arabian Peninsula. This study focuses on petroglyphs near Taymāʾ, Ḥāʾil, and al-ʿUlā oases, important caravan way stations along the incense route. Regional artists developed a characteristic style for depicting horses and camels, distinguishing them temporally and spatially. From its initial appearance the breed was closely associated with chariots, but its eventual value to equestrians is equally evident in Arabian rock art. Petroglyphs in this region elucidate physical conformation, military roles, and high status. Practical aspects and cultural indicators such as training, tack, grooming, and henna body paint...
