  • A Conceptual Study of Alochak pitta on Ayurvedic and Modern Parameter
    • Authors: Gyanendra kumar Gupta; Gagan Devi
Abstract: Ayurveda is the ancient medical documented science. Besides the medicine, we have a special principle which other pathies are lacking that is, Swasthasya Swasthya Rakshanam. Swasthya is a state when an individual is in a state of combination of hormony of three doshas, proper normal functioning of the thirteen types of agnis (digestion and metabolism), the seven dhatus and three malas and person should be in the state of sensorial, mental, emotional and spiritual well being, finally a clear and bright state of mind body and soul. Doshas, dhatus, malas, srotus and agni etc are basic fundamentals of our classical science. In Ayurveda, pitta is representative of agni (digestive power) in the body. As in the outer world, fire burns or transforms the substances to different specific forms. Likewise pitta changes food taken and rasadhatu into some nutrition terms, by using which rest of the dhatus get nutrition. Similarly Sun and fire are responsible for different colours and visual functions. These functions are done by pitta in the body. Therefore, a conceptual study of alochak pitta on Ayurvedic and modern parameter was explained in the present article.

  • Concept of Low Back Pain (Waja-uz-Zahr) in Unani System of Medicine
    • Authors: Manumula Komala; M. Raja Ram, M. Ashok, M. Swathi
Abstract: Waja-uz-Zahr (low back pain) is marked as most costly ailment in the productive years. Low back pain (LBP) has been cited as the 2nd most common reason for which patients visit a physician. It is the major cause of activity restriction and work absence all over the world. It causes an enormous financial load on individuals, families, communities, industry and governments. The prevalence of back pain in the adult population varies with age. There are a number of surveys in various countries that revealed a point prevalence of 17–30% with a lifetime prevalence of 60–80%. To combat the LBP, medical fraternity had tried many treatment modalities; but failed to offer effective treatment, prevention and rehabilitative measures. Unani System of medicine (USM) has an edge on treating the challenging and chronic diseases. LBP and its classification are described in detail in classical texts of USM. The present review focussed on the description of LBP in general and aetiopathological description in special. The aim of the present article was to reconsider the aetiopathology and management of LBP

  • Effect of Tareeq (Sweating) in Waja-ul-Mafasil (WM) of Samane Mufrat
           (Overweight/Obesity)—A Study
    • Authors: Zahid Kamal; Abdul Haseeb Ansari
Abstract: Samane Mufrat (obesity) occurs due to decrease in hararate ghareezia (innate heat). It is a chronic and increasingly common disease characterized by excess body fat. It is more prevalent in women because of their barid mizaj (cold temperament). The shaham wa sameen (fats) are barid ratab (cold wet), so they accumulate in barid mizaj individuals. As body mass index (BMI) values increase, joint pain symptoms and severity increase. Joint pain may reflect the underlying pathological process of osteoarthritis (OA). For every 5 kg weight gain, there is a commensurate 36% increased risk for developing OA. A loss of 5–10% of body weight of obese has been shown to reduce health risk such as joint pain, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension and insulin resistance. In the present study, effects of tareeq (sweating) in obesity management were evaluated and relief in joint pain was recorded on arbitrary scale. It was an observational before and after treatment self-comparison study, which was conducted in the Regimenal Therapy Unit of National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM) Hospital, Bangalore, India. A portable steam bath was used for tareeq for 30 min. The included subjects were assessed on the basis of change in subjective as well as objective parameters. The duration of study was three months. In the present study, 19 patients of joint pain with obesity were included. Patients with complaint of Waja-ul-Mafasil of varying grade were included. In the present study, 66.7% subjects were female belonging to 20 to > 60 years of age group. The joint pain was recorded before treatment and after the completion of protocol on arbitrarily scale. It was found that 57.89% subjects got relief in joint pain and 442.10% have no further development in pain.

  • Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19): Management Through Ayurveda, Yoga and
           Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy
    • Authors: B. Venkateswar Rao; Izhar Ul Hasan, Tushita Thakur, Anasuya B, Arun Kumar Bhadula, P. Mirunaleni
Abstract: COVID-19 pandemic has become a global health crisis. Mild infection has high recovery rate, while severe cases can be fatal. There is no specific medication or vaccine and treatment is based on supportive care only. At this critical period of limited therapeutic options, Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy can play a significant role in the management of COVID-19 infection. The present paper briefs on the epidemiology, the concept of health and lists the possible preventive and therapeutic options available in the Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) systems of medicine. The guidelines mentioned here are in addition to the standard treatment guidelines of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Research studies may be recommended to evaluate the efficacy of AYUSH systems of medicine in positively influencing the clinical course in those who developed COVID-19 in terms of reduction in severity and duration of signs and symptoms, duration of hospital stay, onset of complications, requirement of life support and mortality

  • Efficacy of Jawarish Falafali in Siman Mufrit (obesity): A pre-post
           analytical clinical study.
    • Authors: Zeyaul Haque; Shazia Parveen Farooqui, Azhar Hasan Khan
Abstract: Background & Objectives:  Obesity (Siman Mufrit) is characterized by excess adipose tissue mass and increased BMI. Obesity has already reached epidemic proportions. In 2016, 1.9 billion adults worldwide were overweight. Of these over 650 million were obese. About 340 million adolescents (aged 5-19) and 41 million children (age < 5) were overweight or obese. NFHS-4 (2015-16) reported that obesity in India doubled in the last decade. Obesity is strongly associated with various cardiovascular,  metabolic, and systemic disorders. In Unani literature, Siman Mufrit is categorized as a balghami disease. Management includes dieto-therapy, pharmacotherapy and regimenal therapy. Treatment modalities should have har-yabis effect. Also, mudir, mushil, moarriq, musakhkhin, mulattif, muhallil and mufattit drugs are useful. Consequently, Jawarish Falafali, a Unani compound formulation was selected for study to substantiate its efficacy in Siman Mufrit (obesity) on scientific parameters. Methods: The study-design was single-arm pre-and post-analysis clinical trial with 30 subjects aged between 18-60 years and having BMI between 30-40 kg/m2. The test drug Jawarish Falafali was given orally 5 gm OD for 60 days. Follow-up was done fortnightly. Efficacy was assessed by change in bodyweight, BMI, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio and lipid profile. The outcome was analyzed using appropriate statistical methods. Results: A significant decrease (p<0.001) was observed in all primary outcome measures i.e. body weight, BMI, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio after treatment. Also, a significant reduction in lipid profile (TC, TG and LDL) except HDL (p=0.083) was detected.Interpretation & Conclusion: This study revealed that the test drug effectively reduced obesity.

  • Concept of Type-2 Diabetes mellitus (Ziabetus shakri) in Unani System of
    • Authors: Manumula Komala; M. Raja Ram, M. Ashok, M. Swathi
Abstract: The term diabetes mellitus (DM) describes a metabolic disorder of multiple aetiology, characterized by chronic hyperglycaemia with disturbance of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism; resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. If the disease condition is left untreated, it causes many complications. It currently affects more than 62 million Indians, which is more than 7.1% of the adult population. Nearly 1 million Indians die due to diabetes and its complication every year. DM is not a new disease, ancient Greeks and Arabic physicians knew it well. According to the Unani System of Medicine (USM), the cause of DM, are sue-e mizaj wa zaufe of kulliya, masana and jigar. The treatment of DM in conventional system of medicine causes side effects due to constant intake. In USM there are a number of herbal drugs available known to have hypoglycaemic effects and some drugs rejuvenates pancreatic cells to secret insulin. In the present paper we have discussed the concept of DM in USM and plant origin single drugs which can be used in treatment of DM. The detail will be discussed in full length of the paper.

  • Reverse Pharmacology: A Gateway to Validation of Efficacy of Natural Drugs
    • Authors: Adnan Mastan
Abstract: In spite of significant advances in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and combinatorial chemistry in the present times, reverse pharmacology (RP) has led to deviation of drug discovery and development from its regular or normal process or path. RP is a trans-disciplinary path which reverses the drug discovery and development process from lab-clinic to clinic-lab. Natural products (NPs) of Unani medicine or traditional system of medicine (TSM) provide vast potential for novel phytomolecules. Therapeutic approach of the TSM will be appreciated through a clinical research model which considers the fundamental principles of traditional medicine at the same time applying the relevant methods of drug discovery. The validation through such researches would rationalize traditional medical practices. RP will prove to be most beneficial to establish evidences of folklore medicine. The potential for new drug discovery in traditional medicine through RP is enormous. An attempt has been made in the present paper to discuss RP with special reference to Unani system of medicine and its relevance in bridging the gap between modern and alternative medicine which may lead to accelerated drug discovery.

  • Urticaria (Sharā) with Reference to Unani and Modern Medicine
           Concept: An Overview
    • Authors: Adnan Mastan
Abstract: Urticaria is one of the common ailments of skin which may be considered as an extremely disabling and difficult-to-treat condition. Urticaria is the fourth-most prevalent allergic disease which occurs due to the release of histamine, bradykinin, kallikrein, and other vasoactive substances from mast cells and basophils in the superficial dermis. It is appropriate to not call it one disease, instead it can be considered as a reaction pattern of the skin which involves the upper dermis, characterized by localized edema and represented by the development of wheals. Treatment forms widely used in modern medicine for this condition are non-sedative anti histamines and corticosteroids. A complementary and integrative approach for urticaria is the need of the hour, wherein, various single or combination of herbs and extracts can be used independently as well as along with allopathic drugs. In Unani literature, disease has been described by the name of Sharā. The aim of the present paper was to explore the different aspects of urticaria with special reference to Unani and modern medicine.
