  • The effect of the European union (MPP6) infrastructural development on the
           productivity of food crop farmers and development of rural areas in Imo
           state

      Abstract: The study examined the effect of the European Union infrastructural development on the productivity of food crop farmers and development of rural areas in Imo State. The specific objectives were to describe the socioeconomic characteristics of respondents, determine the extent of infrastructural development in the area and ascertain the impact of the scheme on the productivity of the rural food crop farmers. Primary data were collected with the aid of structured and validated questionnaire from 240 respondents comprising of farmers in the beneficiary and non-beneficiary communities using the multi-stage sampling technique. The data retrieved from the questionnaire were analysed with the use of the descriptive statistics, the infrastructural index model and the ordinary least squares regression model. The mean infrastructural index for the beneficiary and the non-beneficiary communities was 0.84 and 1.01, respectively; these figures were used to rank communities based on their level of development. The study showed that 18.2, 72.7 and 9.1% of the sampled beneficiary communities were developed, moderately developed and underdeveloped, respectively while 81.8 and 18.2% of the non-beneficiary communities were moderately developed and underdeveloped, respectively. The pooled result of the ordinary least square regression model showed a good fit at p < 0.05, that a reduction in distance and cost of accessing the infrastructural facilities in the benefiting communities would increase food crop production in the area. The null hypothesis that the EU (MPP6) infrastructural facilities has no significant influence on the value of food crop production in the beneficiary communities was rejected as the F-cal obtained was greater than the F-tab at p 0.01 level. European Union through their Micro Project Programmes (MPP6) should expand it geographical scope to ensure that more infrastructural facilities are provided particularly in the non –beneficiary communities as this will bring about an increase in the productivity level of food crop farmers and the development of the rural areas.

  • Labour productivity and resource use efficiency amongst smallholder cocoa
           farmers in Abia state, Nigeria

      Abstract: The study examined labour productivity and resource efficiency amongst smallholder cocoa farmers in Abia State, Nigeria. A purposive random sampling technique was adopted in selecting 60 cocoa farmers from three agricultural zones in the State. The analytical techniques used involve inferential statistics like means, frequency and percentages. Loglinear regression analysis was also used. The results show that factors influencing labour productivity among cocoa farmers include level of education, experience and planting material. Also, the determinants of output among cocoa farmers revealed that planting materials, fertilizer use and capital were significant determinants of output among cocoa farmers in the study area. The determinants of allocative efficiency show that seed was under-utilized, while farm size, labour, fertilizer and capital were over-utilized. The results further revealed that poor farm wages (labour payments) ranked highest (38.3%) among labour inhibitor in the study area. It is therefore recommended that supply of adequate capital in terms of productivity should form a policy trust in agriculture; adequate policy that would encourage provision of capital to cocoa farmers is advocated. The farmers should be encouraged to utilize their family labour efficiently in order to reduce use of hired labour which has led to increase in the cost of food crops production and decrease in farm revenue.

  • Determinants of training needs of extension personnel of agricultural
           development programme (ADP) Ekiti state, Nigeria

      Abstract: The dynamics experienced in agricultural practice has put extension service delivery on a new platform that requires regular updating of the extension staff knowledge for new competences, to meet the changing needs of the clientele they serve. This study therefore sought to determine the training needs of extension personnel of Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) in Ekiti State of Nigeria. The population of the study was all extension personnel in the three agricultural zones of the Ekiti State ADP. Random sampling technique was used to select 60 extension personnel from a total of 65 extension personnel from the zones to which questionnaire were administered; however, only 51 questionnaires were returned which were analysed for this study. The mean age of the extension personnel was 44 years with about 63% within the age range of 41-50 years. About 76.5% of the extension workers had higher national diploma (HND). Forty seven percent of the extension personnel had work experience between 11 and 20 years; about 33% of them had work experience between 1 and 10 years while 19.6% had above 20 years experience at work. The results of the chi square analysis show that factors such as sex (X2 = 8.24, p < 0.5), educational level (X2 = 6.49; p < 0.05), years of work experience of the extension personnel (X2 =11.58, p < 0.5) and attendance of in-service training (X2 = 6.32; p < 0.10) were significant determinants of their training needs.

  • Effect of tillage, rhizobium inoculation in maize-soybean based cropping
           systems and nitrogen fertilizer application on chemical fertility status
           of savanna Alfisol, Nigeria

      Abstract: Field experiment was conducted at Research Farm of Institute for Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru, Nigeria, to investigate the effect of tillage, rhizobium inoculation in maize-soybeanbased cropping systems and nitrogen fertilizer application on chemical fertility status of a savanna Alfisol. The study was split-split plot design with three replications using improved soybean variety (TGX-1448-2E) and maize (SAMMAZ 14). The treatments were two tillage practices (reduced and conventional tillage) as main plot, four rhizobium inoculation in soybean-maize-based cropping systems (inoculated soybean-maize intercrop, uninoculated soybean-maize intercrop, inoculated soybean-maize rotation and uninoculated soybean-maize rotation) as sub-plot and four nitrogen fertilizer rates (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N ha-1) as sub-sub plot. At harvest, soil samples were taken from each of the experimental plots and analyzed for selected soil chemical properties. Soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, soil pH, available phosphorus and exchangeable bases were consistently higher under reduced tillage (RT) than under conventional tillage (CT). Soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, soil pH, available phosphorus and exchangeable bases were significantly higher under rhizobium inoculated soybean-maize rotation compared to other cropping systems. A significant difference was found among the effect of nitrogen rates on soil organic carbon, total nitrogen, soil pH, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium which were significantly lower under 0 kg N ha-1. The study demonstrated that integration of rhizobium inoculated soybean in soybean-maize-based cropping systems under tillage practices, especially RT would improves chemical fertility status of the soil and subsequently reduced N application rate from 120 to 80 kg N ha-1.

  • The growth of Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) seedlings under varied watering
           intervals in the nursery

      Abstract: Water stress has a strong influence on the physiological functions of tree crops which adversely affects the growth and yield of tree plants. Drought and soil fertility are the major factors that influence seedling survival and growth in arid areas, thus it is of paramount importance to establish optimum water requirements for tree seedlings in order to promote growth. In line with this, an investigation was carried out to assess early growth behaviours of Balanites aegyptiaca when exposed to varied watering intervals in the screen house. Two weeks old seedlings in polythene bag (2kg) containing the standard potting mixture as growing media were used for the experiments. Seedlings were exposed to 4 different watering intervals (once daily, once after 3, 7 and 14 days) and 200ml of water was administered per each seedling based on the watering frequency for 12 weeks. Ten seedlings were allocated per watering frequency and replicated 5 times in a completely randomized design. Data was collected on stem height, collar diameter, number of leaves and seedlings dry weights. Net assimilation rate, relative growth rate and absolute growth rate were also calculated. Data was analysed with analysis of variance and the significantly different means were separated with Duncan Multiple Range Tests (p<0.05). The result revealed a significant effect of water stress on seedlings growth of B. aegyptiaca where seedlings that received water once daily and once after 3 days produced highest growth in all the variables measured. Administering 200ml of water per seedling once after 3 days is therefore recommended for the improved growth of B. aegyptiaca in the nursery.

  • Pedogenesis of two lithologically similar soils under vegetation of
           contrasting features in Ohaji, south-eastern Nigeria

      Abstract: Knowledge of pedogenic processes in soils is vital in deepening our understanding of soil development. A pedogenic study was carried on two pedons underlain by similar lithologic material, one located under a seven-year-old vegetation and the other under a twenty-three-year-old vegetation. The two contrasting vegetation ages were randomly selected. Samples were taken from the two pedons and subjected to laboratory analyses. The results were then subjected to statistical analysis using the Statistical Analytical System. The results showed that soil profiles were deep (200 cm) and well drained. The soils were darker and browner in the epipedon and redder down the profile in all the pedons. The soil formed under the 23-year-old vegetation had a thick (18 cm) O horizon with Oe and Oa components. There was no O horizon found in the soil formed under the 7-year-old vegetation. The dominant pedogenic processes in the two soil groups were littering, melanization, illuviation, eluviation, leaching, mineralization, and humification. The two soils were preponderantly sand. Sand accumulation was higher (> 80%) in the epipedon when compared to the subsurface horizons (< 70%). All the soils had silt/clay ratios greater than 0.2. Soils were strongly acidic (4.56-5.01), moderate to high in available phosphorus (17.49-21.47 mg kg-1) and low to moderate in organic carbon (8.78-14.49 g kg-1.). Because soil survey reports may not give a clear outlook of the important pedogenic characteristics of soils, the research becomes very necessary in many localities of similar need.

  • Effects of different coagulants on the physico-chemical, microbial and
           sensory properties of Wara, a Nigerian soft soy-cheese

      Abstract: Nigerian soft cheese often referred to as wara was produced from soya bean milk using coagulants from lime, alum and steep water. Effects of these coagulants on the yield, proximate composition, functional properties, microbial loads and sensory properties were evaluated. The result revealed that different coagulants used had no significant (p ≥ 0.05) effect on yield of the cheeses. The result for the proximate composition shows that, different coagulants used influenced all the proximate parameters except the protein content. Similarly, coagulants used significantly affected the water absorption capacity, oil absorption capacity, foam capacity and gelation capacity. However, the bulk density was not significantly (p ≥ 0.05) affected. Steep water coagulated cheese had the highest total plate count. The result for sensory properties shows that, lime gave the best cheese in terms of general acceptability. Cheese produced from steep water as a coagulant gave the best proximate attributes, however, its high total plate count calls for concern.

  • Agronomic performance and adaptability of three varieties of watermelon
           (Citrullus lanatus) on sandy loam soil in derived savanna

      Abstract: Amidst tropical vegetables, watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is increasing popular for its numerous health benefits. In Nigeria, this vegetable crop is still under-produced in the relatively more humid southern part where it is heavily consumed. This situation is partly due to lack of empirical data on existing exotic and local varieties particularly in the southeastern region of the country. In this study, field trials with three watermelon varieties [Lagone (exotic), Koloss (exotic) and Charleston gray (local) serving as control] were conducted on a sandy loam acid soil at Nsukka in southeastern Nigeria typifying Derived Savanna. They were evaluated for agronomic performance including vegetative growth and fruit yield. Koloss took less time (~ 10 days) to emerge compared to Lagone (15 days) and Charleston gray (14 days). Lagone attained first and 50% flowering earlier (36 and 39 days, respectively) than the others. Charleston gray had the longest vine (196.42 cm) nine weeks after planting but showed fewer fruits (3.33) than the others, while Koloss showed largest fruit width (15.66 cm). Fresh fruit yield indicated nominal differences but tended to be highest in Koloss (1.95 kg/plant); Lagone and Charleston gray had 1.85 and 1.74 kg/plant, respectively. For enhanced production of watermelon, Koloss is recommended to farmers in Nsukka agro-environment and similar climate-soil zones in the savanna. In the future, this exotic variety could be hybridized with the local Charleston gray and the hybrid seeds evaluated against the pure lines.
