  • Effect of Digestrom® and Poultry Star® on the Body Performance and
           Immunity Status of Broiler Chickens

    • Abstract: Objective: This study was carried out to evaluate the positive effects of two different commercial products (Digestrom® and Poultry Star®) on body performance and the immune response against Newcastle disease after challenge with a virulent local strain in broiler chickens routinely vaccinated against Newcastle disease. Materials and Methods: A total of 250 one-day-old broiler chicks were randomly distributed to five groups (G1-G5) with 50 chicks per group and treated as follows, G1: Received Digestrom® as a feed additive at a dose of 150 mg kg–1, G2: Received Poultry Star® as a feed additive at a dose of 0.5 g kg–1 (2×1011 CFU kg–1), G3: Received Digestrom® at a dose of 150 mg kg–1 and Poultry Star® at a dose of 0.5 g kg–1 (2×1011 CFU kg–1) as feed additives, G4: Positive control (vaccinated but not treated), G5: Negative control (vaccinated and treated). All groups except G5 (negative control) were vaccinated with NDV LaSota and 14-days-old IBDV D78 intermediate at 5, 10 and 20 days of age via drinking water. At the age of 25 days, all groups were challenged with the virulent strain of Newcastle disease at 100 ELD50 106.   • Effects of Autoclaving, Addition of Sodium Hydroxide and Their Combination
           on Protein Content and in vitro Digestibility of Chicken Feathers

    • Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of NaOH addition, autoclaving and their combination on the protein and pepsin digestibility of chicken feathers. Methodology: The first experiment consisted of the following treatments: (1) The 2 h treatment with 1.0 M of NaOH, (2) The 12 h treatment with 1.0 M of NaOH, (3) The 24 h treatment with 1.0 M of NaOH and (4) Control, consisting of raw feathers incubated with only 100 mL of distilled water for 24 h at 37°C. The second experiment consisted of the following treatments: (1) Raw chicken feathers autoclaved at 2.5*105 Pa, at a temperature of 121°C for 30 min and (2) Raw chicken feathers soaked in 0.5% NaOH solution for 24 h, followed by autoclaving at 2.5*105 Pa and 121°C for 30 min. Results: The prolonged treatment (24 and 12 h) with NaOH improved feather solubility but resulted in lower protein retention, whereas the addition of NaOH followed by autoclaving resulted in higher protein content and increased in vitro pepsin digestibility. Conclusion:The addition of NaOH followed by autoclaving is recommended as a treatment for processing of chicken feathers.

    • Abstract: Objective: This study evaluated the effect of xylanase, Bacillus direct-fed microbials (DFM) and their combination on performance under a mild, subclinical challenge with two Eimeria species and Clostridium perfringens in broilers raised to 42 days.   • Protection of Neonatal Broiler by Using T Cell Lymphokines Prepared from
           Immunization with Salmonella typhimurium Against Field Local Newcastle
           Disease Virus Isolate

    • Abstract: Objective: The current study aimed to use lymphokines from birds hyper-immunized against Salmonella typhimurum to enhance the immune response against Newcastle disease (ND) and to limit the use of vaccinal viruses that have been recently shown not to give absolute protection. Materials and Methods: Two groups of chicks were used: The first group was vaccinated with three doses of Salmonella typhimurum at 7, 14 and 21 days and the second group was not vaccinated and was considered a control group. Salmonella-immune lymphokines (S-ILK) were obtained from the T cells of the first group at 30 days, while non-immune lymphokines (N-ILK) were obtained from the T cells of the second group. Then, a total of 300 (Ross-308) 1 day old broiler chickens were randomly divided into 6 treatment groups (G1-G6) with 50 chicks in each group and treated as follows: G1: Treated with salmonella-immune lymphokines (S-ILK) and challenged with Newcastle disease virus (NDV). G2: Treated with non-immune lymphokines (N-ILK) and challenged with NDV. G3: Non-treated and challenged with NDV. G4: Non-treated and naturally infected with NDV.   • Persistence of Campylobacter and Salmonella in the Ceca, Spleen and
           Liver/gallbladder of Inoculated Broilers

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Poultry is a major source of Salmonella and Campylobacter involving human illness. Several body openings of the young chick are exposed to bacteria. The objective of this study was to determine how long artificially inoculated Salmonella or Campylobacter persist in the ceca, spleen and/or liver/gallbladder of broilers. Materials and Methods: Day old chicks (10/isolation unit and 5/floor pen) were orally gavaged with 103 cells of either a marker Salmonella Typhimurium or a marker Campylobacter coli and ceca, spleen and liver/gallbladder were aseptically sampled. Results: All organs from all birds were positive for Salmonella Typhimurium and C. coli at 1 week, most were still positive at 2 and 3 weeks. By 6 weeks, no Salmonella Typhimurium was detected in any tested organs. By 6 weeks all ceca and spleens were positive for Campylobacter coli but none found in liver/gallbladder samples. Conclusion: Translocation of Campylobacter and Salmonella to internal organs and their persistence in these organs are important because these bacteria will not be detected by the currently used methods. Current methods sample the intestinal tract only with drag swabs or fecal samples. Research is needed to understand translocation and persistence of both Campylobacter and Salmonella in poultry.

    • Abstract: Background and Objective: Data on the polymorphism of qualitative traits of Arabic chicken are not available. The study was designed to determine the variety of qualitative traits of Arabic chickens reared in Mataram city. Methodology: The study was conducted in Istiqomah Farmer Group in Dasan Cermen, Sandubaya, Mataram, Indonesia, using a survey method, in which farmer samples were selected by random sampling purposive method. Collected data were tabulated and analyzed descriptively. Results: The study found that Arabic chickens reared in the city of Mataram had the addition of plumage color, skin color, shank color, beak color and comb shape. The highest frequency of plumage color was silver, followed by golden, gold silver and white gold, respectively. The highest frequency of color of skin, shank and beak was black, followed by white and yellow. The highest frequency of comb shape was singular shape followed by the pea shape. Conclusion: Arabic chickens in Mataram city have been experiencing degradation of colors of plumage, skin, shank, beak and comb shapes.
