           enfance

    • Authors: Anne Dupuy, Amandine Rochedy
Abstract: Two insights can be drawn from the data presented in this article. The first one consists in examining the articulation between daily rituals and routines, two “objects” too often treated separately in scientific literature. The second one allows for a reflection on the impact of the small rites of passage inherent to the diversification of food consumption and which are defined as “ephemeral rituals”. From a diachronic perspective, this article deals with the multiplicity of ritual practices that take place during family socialisation. From a synchronic point of view, it supports a dynamic view of rituals as a result of the changes at work during the food socialisation of the young child. As these rituals and daily habits are unique and ephemeral, they are considered as “little nothings”, and this contributes to their inconspicuousness. This article intends to highlight their importance not only to the child’s individual socialisation process, but also to family food socialisation....

  • Food experiences of people living with cancer: continuities and
discontinuities in their local and global dimensions.

    • Authors: Patrice Cohen, Hélène Hoarau, Armelle Lorcy
Abstract: This issue of Anthropology of Food is dedicated to Annie Hubert (1941-2010), a nutritional anthropologist who pioneered an anthropological and multidisciplinary approach in the study of nasopharyngeal cancer in France and helped to create a sociocultural epidemiology of the links between diet and cancer. Her work, her personality and her life have inspired the three of us in our commitment to this theme and in our efforts to publish this issue. Our thoughts are with her as we write this introduction and publish the articles that follow. The genesis of this issue was our chance meeting during the 2014 conference “Fieldwork on cancer: transformations and/or permanent features in the French health model'” at Paris Ouest-Nanterre La Défense University. Each of us had started participating in the activities of the NACRe Network that had opened within the Humanities and Social Sciences (for further information, please refer to the interview with Paule Latino-Martel), and we realised that t...

  • Vers des solidarités alimentaires territorialisées... Retour sur la
           recherche-action SOLALTER menée en Bretagne

    • Authors: Catherine Darrot, Julien Noel
Abstract: This article is interested in the connexions and interactions between several movements involved in the field of a responsible, local, united and socially accessible food supply. It analyses the results of surveys conducted between 2012 and 2014 in Brittany within the participatory research project SOLALTER (Territorialized food solidarities). We try to understand how these initiatives of food solidarities (consumer’s cooperatives, collective gardens, social grocer’s shops...), initiated either by the French mainstream food solidarity organization’s or by short food supply chain’s innovators, show complementarities and allow a better access to a quality food for all on their territory. We present first the context of this project, centered on an extensive inventory of food solidarity initiatives in Brittany. Then, we examine more particularly eight of these initiatives, selected as representative. An approach of their strategies by six indicators allows to synthesize and to compare ...

  • Engagements militants, professionnalisés ou distanciés : les visages
           multiples de l’alimentation engagée

    • Authors: Diane Rodet
Abstract: This article analyses the militant commitments that exist around political consumerism, considering all the actors which make those initiatives possible : consumers, producers, distributors or networks’ creators, employees and volunteers. It shows those political acts aren’t only the result of new individualized commitments but also come from more traditional ones. Another commitment type can be found when members try to reconcile beliefs and work. The different commitments’ coexistence is a challenge for those movements.

and Human Values Society, Occidental College, Los Angeles (USA), 14-17
           juin 2017

    • Authors: Tristan Fournier
Abstract: Du 14 au 17 juin 2017 s’est tenue à l’Occidental College de Los Angeles (USA) la 17ème conférence internationale et annuelle de food studies conjointement organisée par l’Association for the Study of Food and Society (ASFS) et l’Agriculture, Food and Human Values Society (AFHVS).

  • People moving with food from and to Northern Europe

    • Authors: Laura Terragni, Gun Roos
Abstract: Food has a key role in shaping culture and identity. When people move, they use food and food traditions to maintain contact with the place they come from but also come in contact with a new food culture and new habits. In November 2016, NAFS (Nordic Association for Food Studies) Norway arranged the Conference “People Moving with Food”. It resulted in two days with interesting presentation about food and multiculturalism. As a follow up the Conference “People moving with food” we invited participants to the Conference and other researchers interested in this topic to submit an extended abstract to be considered for a special issue in Anthropology of Food. Scope of the publication “People moving with food from and to Northern Europe” will especially focus on the importance of food traditions, on how food can bring people together, and on the shaping of new cultures of food that move beyond boundaries, to consider questions like: What happens to food habits when we move' How do migrants...

    • Authors: Sandrine Bretonnière, Anne Festa, Philippe Bataille, Laurent Zelek
Abstract: In the field of oncology, patients face strong medical injunctions to engage in treatment, however demanding these may be. A parallel medical recommendation warns them against excessive weight loss or gain during and beyond the treatments. We investigated how patients react to this medical recommendation by conducting a sociological study and assessing nutrition workshops implemented by a regional health network in the Paris area. Our results show that the nutritional health medical norm is embraced by patients in the hope to enhance their chances of remission. When engaging in nutrition workshops, however, their primary goal is to create social bonds with other patients, and to assert their role whilst family food is destabilized during treatment. Patients thus conform to the norm of nutritional health for medical reasons but in parallel use it as a means to meet needs in their personal, social and family life.

  • Manger après le diagnostic d’un cancer

    • Authors: Marine Fontas
Abstract: The cancer diagnosis and the monitoring of anticancer treatments generate multiple dietary disturbances that are directly related to prognosis and to the patients’ quality of life. These disturbances reorganize the relation to food for sufferers. From a longitudinal study conducted in France between 2011 and 2013 about patients with lung cancer and treated by chemotherapy, this article reports the dietary adaptation strategies of organizational, nutritional and sensory type implemented by patients and their caregivers. These strategies are shaped at the intersection of informational context and food experience that are characterized by desires of changes and dependencies to chemotherapy-induced side effects.

  • Des conduites alimentaires régulées, des substances « nocives »
           évincées

    • Authors: Meriem M’zoughi
Abstract: This article describes the eating behaviors of Cambodians with cancer. Such behaviors depend on selective logics which are articulated through plural and complex conceptions of the body and the disease. First of all, patients modify their feeding behaviors prior to the illness and eliminate some food that they and their family consider as “harmful”. The dangerous nature of the aliments is based on the potential effects associated with the ingestion of the food by a person with cancer. Those beliefs echo the Khmers’ definition of cancer. Patients regulate their food consumption by following certain principles. Those principles relate to the search of a balanced diet, moderation, as well as a gain in energy. Therefore, this article examines the analogue relationship between a pathology and specific eating behaviors. These behaviors are underpinned by a food classification loosely based on the theory of humors.

    • Authors: Patrice Cohen, Hélène Hoarau, Armelle Lorcy
