  • WeNA: Deterministic Run-time Task Mapping for Performance Improvement in
           Many-core Embedded Systems

      Abstract: Many-core embedded systems will feature an extremely dynamic workload distribution where massive applications arranged as an unpredictable sequence enter and leave the system at run-time. Efficient mapping strategy is required to allocate system resources to the incoming application. Noncontiguous mapping improves system throughput by utilizing disjoint nodes, however, the increasing communication distance and external congestion lead to high power consumption and network delay. This paper thus presents an enhanced noncontiguous dynamic mapping algorithm, aiming at decreasing interprocessor communication overhead and improving both network and application performance. Communication volumes are utilized to arrange the mapping order of tasks belong to the same application. Moreover, expanding parameter of each task is developed which directs the optimized mapping decision comparing to the current neighborhood and occupancy information. Experimental results show that our modified mapping algorithm Weighted-based Neighborhood Allocation (WeNA) makes considerable improvements on Average Weighted Manhattan Distance (8.06%) and network latency (9.8%) in comparison with the state-of-the-art algorithm.

  • An Ultra-Lightweight Transmitter for Contactless Rapid Identification of
           Embedded IP in FPGA

      Abstract: This letter presents the first ultra-lightweight transmitter based on electromagnetic emanation to send embedded intellectual properties (IP) identity (ID) quickly and discreetly. The proposed solution is based on a binary frequency shift keying (BFSK) transmitter that ensures an exceptionally high data rate. In addition, we present a coherent demodulation method using slippery window spectral analysis to recover data outside the device. The hardware resources occupied by the transmitter represent less than 0.022% of a 130 nm Microsemi Fusion FPGA. The experimental bitrate of the data transmission is around 500 times higher than the bitrate available for other state of the art spy circuitry using power consumption. In comparison with other works, our proposal goes clearly towards using a spy circuit in an industrial context for IP protection.

  • Motion Noise Cancelation in Heartbeat Sensing using Accelerometer and
           Adaptive Filter

      Abstract: This letter focuses on suppressing the motion artifact of wrist photoplethysmographic heart rate signals using an accelerometer based adaptive filter. Monitoring of the heart signal can offer important insights with regard to health and wellness. The objective of the experiment conducted here is to recover the distorted signal resulting from body movement while measuring the heart rate signal noninvasively from the wrist. The class of filters, known as adaptive filters, that can extract meaningful information from the distorted signal, used predetermined initial conditions to equalize the signal distortion due to motion. Adaptive filters of least mean-square (LMS), Kalman filter, and recursive least-squares (RLS) were used in this study to recover the distorted heart rate signal. This study also presented a comparison on utilized filters that can be used for recovering of the heart rate signal.

  • Framework for a Selection of Custom Instructions for Ht-MPSoC in
           Area-performance Aware Manner

      Abstract: Using application-specific instructions for heterogeneous multiprocessor system-on-chip (Ht-MPSoC) allows to find a good performance/energy trade-off. For MPSoC architecture executing different multimedia applications, we expect a large number of potential custom instructions. In order to explore the potential of all these instructions, we propose to identify the similar critical computations to be executed on hardware accelerators (HWA) shared between processors. Depending on the running applications in one side and their needs in performance and area usage on the other side, private and shared hardware accelerators are attached to the different cores. This leads to a large architectural space exploration. In this letter we propose an FPGA-based framework capable of identifying the configuration of HWA targeted to an MPSoC architecture. Our framework incorporates a hardware accelerators sharing methodology to optimize area/performance tradeoff. The comparison of framework-estimated results and real measurements proves the efficiency of our framework.

  • Efficiency Limits for Value-Deviation-Bounded Approximate Communication

      Abstract: Transferring data between integrated circuits accounts for a growing proportion of system power in wearable and mobile systems. The dynamic component of power dissipated in this data transfer can be reduced by reducing signal transitions. Techniques for reducing signal transitions on communication links have traditionally been targeted at parallel buses and can therefore not be applied when the transfer interfaces are serial buses. In this article, we address the issue of the best-case effectiveness of techniques to reduce signal transitions on serial buses, if these techniques also allow some error in the numeric interpretation of transmitted data. For many embedded applications, exchanging numeric accuracy for power reduction is a worthwhile tradeoff. We present a study of the efficiency of these value-deviation-bounded approximate serial data encoders (VDBS data encoders) and proofs of their properties. The bounds and proofs we present yield new insights into the best possible tradeoffs between dynamic power reduction and approximation error that can be achieved in practice. The insights are important regardless of whether actual practical VDBS data encoders are implemented in software or in hardware.

  • Strengthening SIMON Implementation Against Intelligent Fault Attacks

      Abstract: Driven by malicious intent, attackers are impelled to extract the cipher key and thus compromise the cryptosystem through fault attacks. Existing fault-detection methods can effectively detect random faults in the cipher implementation, but yield a high fault bypass rate (FBR) under intelligent fault attacks. To address this limitation, we propose a new microarchitecture to thwart fault attacks that place mathematically symmetric faults on the two encryption data paths. To further reduce the FBR for a new lightweight cipher SIMON, we propose a new countermeasure that integrates operand permutation and masking techniques. Closed-form expressions for depermutation and demasking in SIMON are provided in this letter. Our method was assessed under two fault attack scenarios (random and symmetric fault injections) with bit-flip, stuck-at-0, and stuck-at-1 fault models. Simulation results show that our method minimizes the FBR to zero with the fault attack scenarios of symmetric fault location and stuck-at-0 fault injections. Overall, the proposed method outperforms the existing fault-detection methods in multiple fault attack conditions, at the cost of 5% more area overhead than the most hardware-efficient fault detection method.

  • An Evolutionary Algorithm for Netlist Partitioning Targeting 3-D FPGAs

      Abstract: Three-dimensional (3-D) chip stacking is considered as the silver bullet technology to preserve Moore's momentum and fuel the next wave of consumer electronics. However, the benefits of such an integration technology have not yet been explored due to limitations posed mostly by the lack of efficient tools to support application mapping onto these devices. This letter introduces a framework based on a genetic algorithm for netlist partitioning targeting 3-D reconfigurable platforms. Experimental results prove the efficiency of our solution, as we achieve average reduction of the number of utilized through-silicon vias (TSVs) up to 17% for comparable performance metrics against relevant state-of-the-art algorithms.
