  • Introducing New Localization and Positioning System for Aerial Vehicles

      Abstract: The concept of localization and positioning has received major attention as the use of UAVs is growing by day. Although there is the general method of GPS for positioning, as we will explain later, the need for alternative measures, such as new methods of localization based on visual means are growing. In this letter we present a new system based on common ubiquitous wireless and communication transmitters, presenting a new localization method based on Multilateration through calculations of time difference of arrival (TDOA) of the propagated signals. In this system we will, so to speak, turn the GPS system upside down and instead of using satellites as reference points in our positioning calculations, we will use the common stationary transmitters; making this system a perfect alternative for GPS and other visual based positioning systems.

  • Employing Symmetric Dual-Rail Logic to Thwart LPA Attack

      Abstract: Leakage power analysis (LPA) attacks aim at finding the secret key of a cryptographic device from measurements of its static (leakage) power. This novel power analysis attacks take advantage of the dependence of the leakage power of CMOS integrated circuits on the data they process. This letter proposes symmetric dual-rail logic (SDRL), a standard cell LPA attack countermeasure that theoretically resists the LPA attacks. The technique combines standard building blocks to make new compound standard cells, which have a close to constant leakage power consumption. Experiment results show SDRL is a promising approach to implement a LPA-resistant crypto processor.

  • Fast Filter-Based Boolean Matchers

      Abstract: Boolean matching is one of the fundamental and time-consuming procedures in field-programmable gate array (FPGA) synthesis. The SAT-based Boolean matchers (BMs) are not scalable while other Boolean matchers based on complicated Boolean logic operation algorithms are not flexible for complex PLBs. Recently, a scalable Boolean matcher (F-BM) based on the Bloom filter has been proposed for both scalability and flexibility. However, it requires large amount of memory space which can be a bottleneck for traditional personal computers. To tackle that problem, this letter proposes a novel Boolean matcher with much less memory requirement. Compared with F-BM, the proposed Boolean matcher has achieved an average of 5% better result with 2000x smaller storage and only 1.6x more runtime when applying to the same application. The significant reduction of storage requirements makes the proposed Boolean matcher able to handle more complicated PLB structures with larger input sizes.

  • Hybrid Fault Detection for Adaptive NoC

      Abstract: This letter presents a hybrid approach to efficiently locating data packet errors in an adaptive network-on-chips (NoC). We propose to combine offline and online concepts based on a distributed and factorized online error detection module that will enable us to perform an efficient analysis of partial and localized area networks. This combination allows for an accurate localization of fault sources (97.79% fault coverage) by using offline detection performed at suitable moments that are defined by detecting new run-time fault occurrences through online detection. The offline error detection performed during system operation is applied in one of the reconfigurable regions maintaining the run-time NoC communications. We describe the mechanisms for efficiently associating offline and online error detection, and we evaluate performance overheads in the case of permanent data packet errors. Our approach allows to maintain a high reliability impact and NoC throughput while reducing the data packet latency.

  • Self-Adaptive Network-on-Chip Interface

      Abstract: This letter presents an original approach of bandwidth-oriented self-adaptivity in the domain of network-on-chip, where reconfiguration is handled by network interfaces offering traffic with guarantee of service. Reconfiguration is first based on multiple first-in-first-outs (FIFOs) with variables bounds and implemented in a single dual-port memory with a dedicated controller. Secondly, it relies on multiple and compliant TDMA tables based on a new heuristic for path computation. Combination of both techniques provide significant bandwidth improvement with a negligible resource overhead. The proposed solution is demonstrated with cycle-accurate VHDL simulation and FPGA implementation for synthetic and image processing applications.

  • Optimization of Processor-to-Hardware Module Communications on Spaceborne
           Hybrid FPGA-based Architectures

      Abstract: Satellite on-board processing systems are becoming more important every day, thanks to recent advances in hardware architectures. SpaceCube, developed by engineers at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and based on Virtex-5 commercial field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), is one such satellite on-board processing system. This letter describes how methodologies implemented on the Virtex-5 hardware platform can be designed to optimize the communications between the components and modules within the FPGA, including the main processor. A basic methodology, the Euclidean distance calculation for multispectral data, was implemented and added to a higher level hardware system designed in two different ways: A basic one where the communications with the processor are performed by means of a central bus, and an optimized one where such communications are performed through shared memories. Results show that the overall execution performance is higher than in the analogous software version, although the global computation time is directly and highly influenced by the way communications between the main processor and the FPGA are performed.
