  • Cooperative On-Chip Temperature EstimationUsing Multiple Virtual Sensors

      Abstract: A variety of dynamic thermal management (DTM) schemes have been proposed to address the adverse effects of high temperatures on a chip. These DTM schemes rely on on-chip thermal sensors to get accurate temperature information over a die, and typically assume on-chip thermal sensors give accurate temperature readings. However, on-chip thermal sensors with small footprint and low power consumption, such as popular ring-oscillator (RO) based sensors, have relatively low accuracy. We address the challenging question of how to acquire accurate temperature information of a chip during its runtime using small, low-power on-chip thermal sensors. We propose a novel approach of using multiple virtual thermal sensors to increase the accuracy of temperature readings; the virtual thermal sensors are generated from a small low-power physical thermal sensor by adaptively switching its calibration points on the run. Simulation results show that the RMS error of temperature readings can be reduced by up to 91.1% with the use of four virtual thermal sensors as compared with a single thermal sensor case.

  • ORION3.0: A Comprehensive NoC Router Estimation Tool

      Abstract: Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) are increasingly used in many-core architectures. ORION2.0 (see Ref [1] Kahng etal., Proc. DATE, 2009, pp. 423-428) is a widely adopted NoC power and area estimation tool, but its estimation models can have large errors (up to 185%) versus actual implementations. We present ORION3.0, an open-source tool whose parametric and nonparametric modeling methodologies fundamentally differ from ORION2.0 logic template-based approaches in that the estimation models are derived from actual physical implementation data. When compared with actual implementations, ORION3.0 models achieve average estimation errors of no more than 9.3% across microarchitecture, implementation, and operational parameters as well as multiple router RTL generators. A comprehensive suite of these methodologies has been implemented in ORION3.0 (see Ref [2] Available online: http://vlsicad.ucsd.edu/ORION3/.

  • FPGA-Based Protection Scheme against Hardware Trojan Horse Insertion Using
           Dummy Logic

      Abstract: Hardware trojan horses (HTH) have recently emerged as a major security threat for field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Previous studies to protect FPGAs against HTHs may still leave a considerable amount of logic resources to be misused by malicious attacks. This letter presents a low-level HTH protection scheme for FPGAs by filling the unused resources with the proposed dummy logic. In the proposed scheme, we identify the unused resources at the device layout-level and offer dummy logic cells for different resources. The proposed HTH protection scheme has been applied on Xilinx Virtex devices implementing a set of IWLS benchmarks. The results show that by employing the proposed HTH protection scheme, the chance of logic abuse can be significantly reduced. Experimental results also show that as compared to nonprotected designs, the proposed HTH scheme imposes no performance and power penalties.

  • Hierarchical High-Level Synthesis Design Space Exploration with
           Incremental Exploration Support

      Abstract: One of the biggest advantages of C-Based VLSI design over traditional RT-level design is its ability to automatically generate architectures with different area versus performance characteristics without the need of modifying the original behavioral description. So far previous works have focuses on either pruning the design space or by creating predictive models in combination with different metaheuristics. In this letter, we present a hierarchical method which makes use of modern HLS tool's options to synthesize functions as functional operators in order to explore these separately. Our method therefore explores each function separately and then performs a merging stage in order to obtain the overall dominating results. Moreover our proposed method detects if any changes in the behavioral description have happened between two exploration executions and only explores those functions which have been affected by the source code changes, while the results of the previous exploration are reused, thus enabling for incremental DSE. Results show that our method is very efficient.

  • On the Impacts of Greedy Thermal Management in Mobile Devices

      Abstract: As mobile system-on-chips incorporate multicore processors with high power densities, high chip temperatures are becoming a rising concern in mobile processors. Modern smartphones are limited in their cooling capabilities and employ CPU throttling mechanisms to avoid thermal emergencies by sacrificing performance. Traditional throttling techniques aim at achieving maximum utilization of the available thermal headroom so as to minimize the performance penalty at a given time. This letter demonstrates that such greedy techniques lead to fast elevation of temperature on other system components and cause substantially suboptimal performance over increased durations of phone activity. Through experiments on a commercial smartphone, we characterize the impact of application duration on throttling-induced performance loss and propose quality-of-service (QoS) tuning as an effective way of providing the mobile system user with consistent performance levels over extended application durations. The proposed QoS-aware frequency capping technique achieves up to 56% improvement in performance sustainability.

  • Mapping of Embedded Applications on Hybrid Networks-on-Chip with Multiple
           Switching Mechanisms

      Abstract: This letter aims at optimizing the mapping of embedded applications on the hybrid network-on-chip (NoC) that intermingles multiple switching mechanisms. Specifically, we identify the critical characteristics of those switching mechanisms, deriving a new latency and energy model for this type of networks. A novel mapping scheme based on a branch-and-bound algorithm is proposed to map cores onto the NoC and allocate communications to different switching mechanisms simultaneously, such that the average communication latency and energy are optimized. A set of embedded applications are exploited for evaluation. Experimental results show that, compared with three existing mapping strategies, our mapping scheme can obtain considerable reductions in communication latency and energy on the hybrid NoC.

  • RSSI-Aware Energy Saving For Large File Downloading on Smartphones

      Abstract: Smartphones are emerging as a particularly appealing platform for network applications, especially through the WiFi interface. However, WiFi entails considerable energy consumption and smartphones are bottlenecked by their battery capacity. Finding ways to reduce energy consumption of WiFi is more than critical. In this letter, we address the problem of WiFi energy management with the awareness of RSSI properties. Through experiments, we first investigate how the RSSI influences energy consumption. Based on the experimental findings, we propose a simple but effective approach for managing large file downloading in a WiFi environment for smartphones. Simulations show that the proposed method can achieve significant energy savings.
