  • PEG-C: Performance Enhancement Guaranteed Cache for Hard Real-Time Systems

      Abstract: This letter designs the performance enhancement guaranteed cache (PEG-C) for hard real-time systems. The PEG-C uses two counters to monitor the number of hits and misses at runtime to improve the average-case performance, while guaranteeing the worst-case execution time (WCET). Our experiments indicate that with a few preloaded instructions, a PEG instruction cache can achieve the same average-case performance as a regular instruction cache while ensuring performance enhancement even in the worst case.

  • High Communication Throughput and Low Scan Cycle Time with Multi/Many-Core
           Programmable Logic Controllers

      Abstract: Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are hard real-time embedded systems designed to interact with (through sensors and actuators) and control physical processes in pharmaceutical, manufacturing, energy, and automotive industries. PLCs are the fundamental building blocks in modern industrial automation systems; they are designed to operate in extreme, harsh environments for decades without interruption. This letter presents and evaluates a novel, scalable hardware/software architecture for multi/many-core PLCs capable of pipelining the “sensing-executing-actuating” stages of a control system and thus reducing the scan cycle time (SCT) and maintaining a high-throughput communication (HTC). SCT and HTC are two of the most important key performance indicators (KPIs) in industrial control systems because they determine the accuracy of the control algorithms.

  • Runtime Adaptation of Applications Using Design Of Experiments: A
           Smartphone-Based Case Study

      Abstract: We consider the problem of adapting embedded software to heterogeneous devices where it is impractical to obtain a system-level power model for each target platform and operating environment. Our solution leverages the emerging capability of measuring power consumption at run-time using a built-in battery monitoring unit (BMU). We use a statistically rigorous design of experiments (DoE) methodology to efficiently characterize the power consumption configuration space of software online instead of constructing a system-level power model offline. This approach is simple, low-cost, and permits software to dynamically select suitable parameters at run-time to satisfy energy or performance constraints. We illustrate this approach using a camera trap application as a case study deployed on a Nokia N80 smartphone.

  • A High Throughput Efficient Approach for Decoding LDPC Codes onto GPU
           Devices

      Abstract: Low density parity check (LDPC) decoding process is known as compute intensive. This kind of digital communication applications was recently implemented onto graphic processing unit (GPU) devices for LDPC code performance estimation and/or for real-time measurements. Overall previous studies about LDPC decoding on GPU were based on the implementation of the flooding-based decoding algorithm that provides massive computation parallelism. More efficient layered schedules were proposed in literature because decoder iteration can be split into sublayer iterations. These schedules seem to badly fit onto GPU devices due to restricted computation parallelism and complex memory access patterns. However, the layered schedules enable the decoding convergence to speed up by two. In this letter, we show that: 1) layered schedule can be efficiently implemented onto a GPU device; and 2) this approach-implemented onto a low-cost GPU device-provides higher throughputs with identical correction performances (BER) compared to previously published results.

  • Selective Segment Initialization: Exploiting NVRAM to Reduce Device
           Startup Latency

      Abstract: We propose selective segment initialization (SSI) to exploit NVRAM to reduce the device startup latency. SSI locates a kernel binary image in byte-addressable NVRAM and boots the system using this image, eliminating the need to load it from storage. SSI also eliminates the process of decompressing and relocating the OS kernel image in embedded Linux system. The key technical ingredients of SSI are precisely identifying the kernel segments where contents are updated in the course of booting and selectively reloading only these sections each time the system reboots. The fresh copy of the sections can be maintained in NVRAM, NAND flash, NOR flash, etc. In our experiment, SSI reduced the size of the kernel binary image loaded from storage into memory by 90% and reduced the overall device startup time by 54%. This approach can be used not only for cold boot (with NVRAM) but also for warm boot, in which the contents of DRAM persist across the system restart.

  • SIMON Says: Break Area Records of Block Ciphers on FPGAs

      Abstract: While advanced encryption standard (AES) is extensively in use in a number of applications, its area cost limits its deployment in resource constrained platforms. In this letter, we have implemented SIMON, a recent promising low-cost alternative of AES on reconfigurable platforms. The Feistel network, the construction of the round function and the key generation of SIMON, enables bit-serial hardware architectures which can significantly reduce the cost. Moreover, encryption and decryption can be done using the same hardware. The results show that with an equivalent security level, SIMON is 86% smaller than AES, 70% smaller than PRESENT (a standardized low-cost AES alternative), and its smallest hardware architecture only costs 36 slices (72 LUTs, 30 registers). To our best knowledge, this work sets the new area records as we propose the hardware architecture of the smallest block cipher ever published on field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) at 128-bit level of security. Therefore, SIMON is a strong alternative to AES for low-cost FPGA-based applications.
