  • ZyCAP: Efficient Partial Reconfiguration Management on the Xilinx Zynq

      Abstract: New hybrid FPGA platforms that couple processors with a reconfigurable fabric, such as the Xilinx Zynq, offer an alternative view of reconfigurable computing where software applications leverage hardware resources through the use of often reconfigured accelerators. For this to be feasible, reconfiguration overheads must be reduced so that the processor is not burdened with managing the process. We discuss partial reconfiguration (PR) on these architectures, and present an open source controller, ZyCAP, that overcomes the limitations of existing methods, offering more effective use of hardware resources in such architectures. ZyCAP combines high-throughput configuration with a high-level software interface that frees the processor from detailed PR management, making PR on the Zynq easy and efficient.

  • A Novel Framework for the Design of Adaptable Reconfigurable Partitions
           for the Placement of Variable-sized IP Cores

      Abstract: This letter presents a novel framework for the design of adjustable reconfigurable partitions for the placement of variable-sized IP cores on embedded reconfigurable systems. It enables the rapid and easy to use methodology for the generation of adaptive computation and communication infrastructure for partial dynamic reconfiguration. The methodology allows an adaptable partition and efficient resource utilization for the placement of reconfigurable modules. The different steps of the proposed framework are detailed. Its effectiveness and benefits are demonstrated through the use of a practical example implemented on a tiled reconfigurable architecture.

  • Specifying Dynamic Adaptations for Embedded Applications Using a DSL

      Abstract: Embedded systems are severely resource constrained and thus can benefit from adaptations to enhance their functionality in highly dynamic operating conditions. Adaptations, however, often require additional programming effort or complex architectural solutions, resulting in long design cycles, troublesome maintenance, and impractical use for legacy applications. In this letter, we introduce an adaptation logic for the dynamic reconfiguration of embedded applications and its implementation via a domain-specific language. We illustrate the approach in a real-world case study of a navigation application for avionics.

  • S2CBench: Synthesizable SystemC Benchmark Suite for High-Level Synthesis

      Abstract: High-level synthesis (HLS) is being increasingly used for commercial VLSI designs. This has led to the proliferation of many HLS tools. In order to evaluate their performance and functionalities, a standard benchmark suite in a common language supported by all of them is required. This letter presents a benchmark suite, which complies with the latest Synthesizable SystemC standard, called S2CBench. The benchmarks have been carefully chosen to not only include applications of different sizes and from various domains typically used in HLS (e.g., encryption, image and DSP application), but also to test specific optimization techniques in each of them. This allows an easy comparison of not only quality of results (QoR) of the different HLS tools under review, but also to test their completeness.

  • An Embedded Architecture for Energy-Efficient Stream Computing

      Abstract: Stream processing has emerged as an important model of computation in the context of multimedia and communication subsystems of embedded system-on-chip (SoC) architectures. The dataflow nature of streaming applications allows them to be most naturally expressed as a set of kernels iteratively operating on continuous streams of data. The kernels are computationally intensive and are characterized by high throughput requirements. We present StreamEngine, an embedded architecture for energy-efficient computation of stream kernels. StreamEngine introduces an instruction locking mechanism that exploits the iterative nature of streams and enables fine-grain instruction reuse. We also adopt a context-aware dataflow execution (CDE) model to exploit instruction-level parallelism (ILP) and data-level parallelism (DLP) within the stream kernels. We evaluate the performance and energy-efficiency of our architecture for stream kernel benchmarks by implementing the architecture with TSMC 45 nm process, and comparison with an embedded RISC processor.

  • Optimizated Allocation of Data Variables to PCM/DRAM-based Hybrid Main
           Memory for Real-Time Embedded Systems

      Abstract: Phase-change memory (PCM) has many advantages compared to conventional DRAM, including nonvolatility, low static energy consumption, and high reliability. Its drawbacks include limited write-endurance and higher energy consumption for write operations. We consider a hybrid main memory consisting of PCM and DRAM at the same level of the memory hierarchy, and address the problem of partitioning and allocating data variables in a multitasking system to either memory type to minimize the energy consumption in the hyper-period while respecting the user-specified upper bounds on CPU utilization. We present an optimal integer linear programming (ILP) formulation and a heuristic algorithm with polynomial time complexity.
