  • Function-Level Processor (FLP): A High Performance, Minimal Bandwidth, Low
           Power Architecture for Market-Oriented MPSoCs

      Abstract: This letter introduces function-level processors (FLPs) to fill the flexibility/efficiency gap between instruction-level processors (ILPs) and hardware accelerators (HWACCs). Compared to an ILP, an FLP has a coarser programmability at function-level constructed out of configurable function blocks (FBs) implementing market-oriented functions. FBs are connected via a MUX-based programmable interconnect, tuned for envisioned application flows, for realizing flexible macro pipelines. We demonstrate FLP benefits with an industry example of the pipeline-vision processor (PVP). Mapping six embedded vision applications, the PVP offers up to 22.4 GOPs/s with average power of 120 mW; consuming 17x and 6x less power than compared ILP and ILP + HWACCs approaches.

  • Low-Power Low-Latency Data Allocation for Hybrid Scratch-Pad Memory

      Abstract: This letter aims at developing new memory architecture to overcome the daunting memory wall and energy wall issues in multicore embedded systems. We propose a new heterogeneous scratch-pad memory (SPM) architecture that is configured with SRAM, MRAM, and Z-RAM. Based on this architecture, we propose two algorithms: a dynamic programming (MDPDA) and a genetic algorithm (AGADA) to allocate data to different memory banks, therefore, reducing memory access cost in terms of power consumption and latency. Extensive experiments are performed to show the merits of the hybrid SPM memory architecture and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

  • A Square-Root-Free Matrix Decomposition Method for Energy-Efficient Least
           Square Computation on Embedded Systems

      Abstract: QR decomposition (QRD) is used to solve least-squares (LS) problems for a wide range of applications. However, traditional QR decomposition methods, such as Gram-Schmidt (GS), require high computational complexity and nonlinear operations to achieve high throughput, limiting their usage on resource-limited platforms. To enable efficient LS computation on embedded systems for real-time applications, this paper presents an alternative decomposition method, called QDRD, which relaxes system requirements while maintaining the same level of performance. Specifically, QDRD eliminates both the square-root operations in the normalization step and the divisions in the subsequent backward substitution. Simulation results show that the accuracy and reliability of factorization matrices can be significantly improved by QDRD, especially when executed on precision-limited platforms. Furthermore, benchmarking results on an embedded platform show that QDRD provides constantly better energy-efficiency and higher throughput than GS-QRD in solving LS problems. Up to 4 and 6.5 times improvement in energy-efficiency and throughput, respectively, can be achieved for small-size problems.

  • A Joint Source/Channel Approach to Strengthen Embedded Programmable
           Devices against Flash Memory Errors

      Abstract: Reconfigurable embedded systems can take advantage of programmable devices, such as microprocessors and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), to achieve high performance and flexibility. Support to flexibility often comes at the expense of large amounts of nonvolatile memories. Unfortunately, nonvolatile memories, such as multilevel-cell (MLC) NAND flash, exhibit a high raw bit error rate that is mitigated by employing different techniques, including error correcting codes. Recent results show that low-density-parity-check (LDPC) codes are good candidates to improve the reliability of MLC NAND flash memories especially when page size increases. This letter proposes to use a joint source/channel approach, based on a modified arithmetic code and LDPC codes, to achieve both data compression and improved system reliability. The proposed technique is then applied to the configuration data of FPGAs and experimental results show the superior performance of the proposed system with respect to state of the art. Indeed, the proposed system can achieve bit-error-rates as low as about 10-8 for cell-to-cell coupling strength factors well higher than 1.0.

  • Hardware-Based Event Stream Ordering for System-Level Observation

      Abstract: The complexity of embedded systems presents key challenges in observing and analyzing complex hardware and software behavior. System-level observation methods provide in-situ monitoring and analysis of complex system behavior across hardware and software boundaries. Previous system-level observation methods utilized efficient pipelined hardware architectures that provide high throughput for reporting observed events but require significant area resources. Alternatively, an area-efficient round-robin priority-based event stream ordering technique significantly reduces area resources but requires tradeoffs in event stream throughput. We present a hardware-based event stream ordering technique capable of providing high throughput and flexibility in area requirements. This hardware-based event stream ordering technique reduces area requirements by 73.6% with a maximum reduction in event stream throughput of 4.6%.

  • System Level Comparison of 3D Integration Technologies for Future Mobile
           MPSoC Platform

      Abstract: 3D integration is being explored as a viable alternative to overcome limitations faced by mobile MPSoC platforms in traditional 2D designs. TSV based interdie connection is the most widely used approach currently. Although, TSV dimensions are scaling down, they still impose a restriction on the interdie connections density and the granularity at which 3D partitioning can be carried out. These limitations will aggravate in future scaled technologies. Alternatives such as Cu-Cu bonding need to be explored to achieve very fine-pitch and high density interdie connections. In this letter, we carry out a system architecture level comparison for a complex MPSoC platform instantiated for wireless PHY processing (WLAN and LTE). We compare 2D and 3D using: 1) TSVs with μ bump and RDL (F2B); and 2) Cu-Cu bonding (F2F). We show significant gains in 3D as compared to 2D. We also show that F2B and F2F have different system level architecture requirements, and that their impact on parameters at interconnect and system architecture level varies.

  • Fault-Resilient Lightweight Cryptographic Block Ciphers for Secure
           Embedded Systems

      Abstract: The development of extremely-constrained embedded systems having sensitive nodes such as RFID tags and nanosensors necessitates the use of lightweight block ciphers. Nevertheless, providing the required security properties does not guarantee their reliability and hardware assurance when the architectures are prone to natural and malicious faults. In this letter, error detection schemes for lightweight block ciphers are proposed with the case study of XTEA (eXtended TEA). Lightweight block ciphers such as XTEA, PRESENT, SIMON, and the like might be better suited for low-resource deeply-embedded systems compared to the Advanced Encryption Standard. Three different error detection approaches are presented and according to our fault-injection simulations, high error coverage is achieved. Finally, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementations of these proposed error detection structures are presented to assess their efficiency and overhead. The schemes presented can also be applied to lightweight hash functions with similar structures, making the presented schemes suitable for providing reliability to their lightweight security-constrained hardware implementations.

  • Efficient Jammed Area Mapping in Wireless Sensor Networks

      Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are vulnerable to different kinds of denial-of-Service attacks. One such common and easy-to-launch attack is physical or link layer jamming, where an adversary emits constant, high-amplitude noises disrupting the communication among nodes. An intelligent solution is to collaboratively map the jammed region and avoiding traffic through the jammed area. Wood propose such a jammed area mapping (J.A.M) protocol. However, the protocol has the problem of broadcast storm inside the jammed area. In this letter, a technique is presented that finds the nodes inside the jammed area without extensive flooding, thus reducing the traffic inside the jammed region substantially, while retaining the basic operation of J.A.M around the boundary. The solution relies on the localization services present in WSN and exploits this prepared knowledge of neighborhood for deducing the entire area from the perimeter. The result is a reliable and low-traffic version of J.A.M protocol. Simulation results show that the overall traffic involved in mapping can be reduced by 20%-25% using this approach.
