  • A Note on the Suboptimality of Nonpreemptive Real-time Scheduling

      Abstract: In this letter, processor speedup analysis is used to strengthen recent results regarding the suboptimality of uniprocessor nonpreemptive earliest deadline first (npEDF) scheduling. The suboptimality of npEDF is defined as the minimum amount of increase in the processor speed that is needed to guarantee the npEDF schedulability of any feasible task set. We show that any preemptively schedulable task set that is not schedulable by npEDF will become schedulable on a processor speeded up by a factor of not more than one plus the value of the largest execution requirement divided by the shortest relative deadline of any task. This reduces the pessimism compared to the best previous bound by factor of at least two. In addition, for the case of nonpreemptive Fixed Priority scheduling, we also show that twice this speedup bound is enough to guarantee the schedulability of any feasible task set.

  • Time-Delayed Converter-Reshuffling: An Efficient and Secure Power Delivery
           Architecture

      Abstract: In this letter, a time-delayed converter-reshuffling (CoRe) technique is proposed as a countermeasure against machine learning based differential power analysis (DPA) attacks where the attacker can synchronize the sampling frequency with the operating frequency of the device under attack. The proposed time-delayed CoRe technique exploits the distributed nature of multiphase switched capacitor voltage converters where half of the converter stages are delayed to eliminate the risk of having zero power trace entropy (PTE) under machine learning based DPA attacks. A high PTE value is maintained (above 3.2 for a 64-phase time-delayed CoRe technique) regardless of the phase difference between the attacker’s sampling rate and the operating frequency. In addition, the minimum PTE value of the proposed time-delayed CoRe technique is enhanced from zero to $ sim 3$ by inserting a certain time-delay to half of the converter stages.

  • Towards FHE in Embedded Systems: A Preliminary Codesign Space Exploration
           of a HW/SW Very Large Multiplier

      Abstract: The integration of fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) into embedded systems is limited due to its huge computational requirements. FHE requires multiplications of operands up to millions of bits. Current implementations use high-end and parallel processors, leading to high-power consumption. We propose a hardware-software system to benefit from the best of hardware (performance/low-power) and software (flexibility) capabilities. In this letter, we present our first codesign results for hardware dedicated multiplication units, which is used as atomic operations by the software layer. We report FPGA implementation results for those units and software performance estimations of their use in multiplications up to 16 millions-bit operands. In range of 10 W power consumption, our analysis show that good FHE performance is affordable.

  • A Framework of Reconfigurable Transducer Nodes for Smart Home Environments

      Abstract: This letter presents a transducer network framework that supports the amalgamation of multiple transducers into single wireless nodes. This approach is aimed at decreasing energy consumption by reducing the number of wireless transceivers involved in such networks. To make wireless nodes easily reconfigurable, a plug and play mechanism is applied to enable the clustering of any number of transducers. Furthermore, an algorithm is proposed to dynamically detect added and removed transducers from a node. Lastly, an XML based protocol is devised to allow nodes to communicate a description of their layout, measured data and control information. To verify the proposed framework, multiple reconfigurable wireless nodes are used to monitor the dynamic condition of a multiple rooms during a period of 24 hours in order to emulate a smart home scenario.

  • A Formal Verification Methodology for FPGA-Based Stepper Motor Control

      Abstract: Stepper motors are electric motors that are used extensively in safety-critical applications such as auto, medical devices, and surgical robots. A popular trend is the use of FPGA-based digital control for stepper motors. We present a formal verification methodology for 6 types of stepper motor (SM) control. Our methodology is based on the theory of Well-Founded Equivalence Bisimulation refinement , where both formal specifications and implementations are treated as transition systems. We define formal specifications for six types of Stepper Motor control. We also develop correctness proof obligations for FPGA implementations of stepper motor control. The methods are demonstrated using six case studies. The specifications are simple, with less than 50 transitions. We have used our methodology to verify FPGA controllers with millions of transitions against these simple specifications.

  • A Note on the EDF Preemption Behavior in “Rate Monotonic Versus
           EDF: Judgment Day”

      Abstract: In G. C. Buttazzo, Real-Time Syst., vol. 29, no. 1, pp. 5–26, 2005, the author empirically compared earliest deadline first (EDF) and rate monotonic (RM) scheduling algorithms and made a few EDF preemption behavior observations based on data obtained from the first 1000 time units of scheduling activities. However, based on test settings given in (G. C. Buttazzo, Real-Time Syst., vol. 29, no. 1, pp. 5–26, 2005), the first 1000 time units occupies only a small percentage of the entire task set’s hyper-period. We extend EDF preemption behavior study by extending scheduling activities from the first small percentage of a hyper-period of a given task to the entire hyper-period. The extended experiments indicate that the number of preemptions occurred at the beginning of a task set’s hyper-period does not necessarily represent the trend for the entire hyper-period. Hence, comparisons and conclusions made based on a small percentage of a scheduling interval over a task set’s hyper-period may not be accurate. Second, the total number of preemptions within a task set’s hyper-period does not decrease when the task set total utilization increases which is different from the observation obtained in (G. C. Buttazzo, Real-Time Syst., vol. 29, no. 1, pp. 5–26, 2005). We also investigate the impact of execution time differences among tasks on the preemption behavior.
