: This paper focuses on the early stages of the Missionary Sisters of our Lady of Africa (White Sisters), from the point of view of women. From a feminist and gender studies perspective, this study illustrates how socio-ecclesial roles assigned to women give them (or not) a peculiar character, in the context of the foundation of a missionary institute. The relations of these women with their founder, as well as with the White Fathers, who also bear the weight of socio-ecclesial roles imposed on them as men, are analysed. Concepts of authority and obedience are considered as well as the effects of the shock from the missionary experience itself.

: This text wishes to measure the role of feminism in the missionary experience of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in Peru and Brazil between 1960 and 1985. For several nuns, the idea of traditional or new apostolic works in the South American Field allowed them to expand the meaning of their vocation. The issue of women will take, with the Conciliar aggiornamento, a new impetus. Through a patient groundwork, SNJM are inculturated in their different backgrounds of insertion by integrating a vision of the future of women. This study makes it possible to review the nature of the missionary religious functions and hustles the vision of gender of the apostolate and empowerment of religious women.

           (1845-2005)
    • Abstract: Michel Dahan : Cet article cherche à retracer l’itinéraire d’une dévotion aujourd’hui complètement oubliée. : This article recounts the itinerary of a forgotten religious devotion. From 1845 to 2005, many Montreal Catholics venerated in their cathedral the relics of saint Zoticus. The remains of this mysterious saint came from the catacombs of Rome. Promoted by the clergy, the devotion to saint Zoticus was not restricted to the realm of public devotions but was adopted as an integral element of the private devotional world of many Catholics. In looking at the particular example of saint Zoticus, this article reveals the keen interest that existed for relics of catacomb saints in Quebec. The religious fervor surrounding these relics constituted one of the distinctive expressions of ultramontane piety.

: The starting point of this study is the proposition of a new dating for Judith, a work by Ozias Leduc (1864-1955), known for his imposing religious decors as well as for his easel painting. This new dating allows us to provide new insights on the work, informed by Ozias Leduc’s late writings, of which the author proposes a new interpretation, aiming to put their religious and metaphysical content, and the spiritual function given to the image by the painter, in relation to one another. This study affords a new dimension to Leduc’s symbolism. Traditionally understood in relation to Jacques Maritain’s scholastic aesthetics, it is characterized here by the idea, existentialist in scope, of a precarious passage between the terrestrial and the celestial, between matter and spirit.

: The phenomena of church relinquishing, which began a few years ago, raises the question of surplus churches. Although Quebec has developed an expertise in their public conversion, there remains a category of church buildings raising supplemental obstacles in view of their distinctive characteristics. What should be done with over sixty churches, classified and recognized as exceptional by the Quebec government' Admittedly, the traditional religious practices that gave birth to these practices will soon disappear, but the locations remain powerful revelations of the religious presence that shaped Quebec’s culture. How can the survival of these historical spaces be assured in today’s context' A new approach based on the concept of total art work could be the solution.

: This article explores the career of Serge Gagnon. It highlights the impact of his research on the field of religious history, and discusses the works and authors that inspired him. Basing his books on the qualitative analysis of a large body of documentation, Gagnon wrote in a lively and accessible style. He sought to reconstruct the history of pastoral care, of Catholic traditions and of the material living conditions experienced by Lower Canadian priests. Using a wide range of thoroughly analyzed examples, Gagnon showed how the clergy exercised its power. He also attempted to pinpoint the reasons why the communities he studied embraced the Church’s message. Three major influences run through his works : the sociology of knowledge, French religious historiography and American sociologists critical of individualism and consumer society. The latter group echoed Gagnon’s own anxiety about the contemporary Quebec lifestyle, which he contrasted to the Catholic customs that shaped the life of Lower Canadian communities.
