  • Science and religion : an alternative paradigm
    • Authors: Renato Coletto
Abstract: The possible influence of religious beliefs on science has attracted the interest of historians of science, theologians, scientists and philosophers. Yet, in my opinion, the approaches traditionally used to connect religion and science remain unsatisfactory. The main problem is that religious influence is most of the time depicted as optional, occasional and not really significant. In this article, an alternative approach is proposed, that would make this field of research much more "mandatory" for all scholars interested in science. This approach is based on a certain understanding of religion and of its unavoidable repercussions on theory formation. An example of religious influences in the field of philosophy of science is sketched. Finally, the question is considered whether the alternative paradigm proposed here may lead towards a relativist view of science and reality.

  • Gratitude in teacher leadership
    • Authors: E.J. (Johan) Van Niekerk
Abstract: This article contributes on a theoretical level to the debate on the role of gratitude in enhancing leadership. Teacher leadership is used to demonstrate that gratitude in leadership entails Christian leaders showing an all-encompassing response to the functions that leaders need to perform. These functions are derived from the leadership model of Van Niekerk (1995) that serves as the theoretical framework for the discussion.

  • The construction of the identity of a Mathematics teacher and the
influence of a Christian belief system : a narrative inquiry
    • Authors: G.M. Steyn
Abstract: This study elucidates the influence of a Christian belief system on the professional identity development of a young female Mathematics teacher in a South African primary school. It followed a qualitative approach, in particular a narrative inquiry, to show how the teacher constructed her story by means of Dewey's two principles of experience and Clandininian metaphorical three-dimensional inquiry space. Data were mainly collected through a written account of her identity and a personal interview, although relevant data from previous studies in which the teacher had participated were included. The story illustrated this teacher's experiences as a learner, her decision to become a teacher and her teaching experiences in schools. The influence of her Christian beliefs on her practice particularly illustrated the value of using a narrative inquiry to understand the development of the teacher's professional identity.

  • The imbedded role of ethics in healthcare : a contribution from
           translational research
    • Authors: Laetus O.K. Lategan
Abstract: The practice of public and global health confirms that ethics is imbedded in healthcare. Although ethics may be regarded as inherent to the healthcare profession, values and trust are challenged because of the quality of product (service and delivery), inequality in the global healthcare system and rapid technological developments in healthcare. Regardless of good systems and supportive ethical codes in healthcare practices, there are nevertheless ethical challenges in healthcare. This situation necessitates an attempt to understand the dual role that ethics can play as foundation for healthcare systems based on the global accepted understanding of "do no harm" and as an activity alongside many other healthcare activities. This paper discusses these roles of healthcare ethics in addition to the existing, but limited, focus on the patient in the healthcare system. The argument is presented that attention should be given to the ethical needs of those people (in different roles) engaged in the delivery of healthcare. The focus of the paper is on the role that ethics can play in healthcare as a system and a service. Four developments are identified in support of this focus, namely the cost of healthcare; cultural influences on and preparedness for service; the increasing number of aged individuals and their healthcare needs; and ethical challenges such as informed consent. From these developments the central perspective of the paper is presented, namely that ethics should be part of any healthcare system and the promotion of the well-being of people in healthcare, rather than merely the health of the individual patient only. Glouberman and Mintzberg's identification of four worlds (cure, care, control and community) is used as context for the argument. The research is based on a translational research methodology approach to provide best practice perspectives to the healthcare industry.

Politocratic communitarianism's concept of political community is the upshot of the dialectical tensions between rationalism/irrationalism, the universal/particular and empiricism/phenomenalism in the form and matter motive of Aristotle's philosophy. Aristotle regarded the polis (an organismic biopolitical order) as the solution to the dialectical tensions inherent to the political community. Friedrich Nietzsche strengthened the Aristotelian biopolitical order by postulating the idea of natural Becoming in support of the idea of the ancient Greek polis. Subsequently National-Socialism grafted its mythological ideals of Nordic supremacy onto the Aristotelian concept of the state and Nietzsche's Romantic irrationalism. The outcome of National-Socialism's community-ideal was the totalitarian state, thereby giving effect to both the philosophical expression of the ancient Greek popular conviction that the state is the highest rung of man's moral development, and Nietzsche's ideal to establish a biopolitical order on the principle of Becoming. It is surmised that Herman Dooyeweerd's view that the National-Sosialistic state is very much like the idea of the biopolitical totalitarian state of Aristotle, represents a fundamental insight into the dialectical nature of the Greek ground motive of form and matter. To the measure that politocratic communitarianism shares the same basic ground motive, it does not stand over and against Nietzsche's nihilism as supporters of politocratic communitarianism aver. However, National-Socialism's community ideals are much closer to Aristotle and politocratic communitarianism than Nietzsche's vitalism. It must be emphasised, however, that National-Socialism's biopolitical aims were strengthened to a considerable measure by Nietzsche's vitalistic irrationalism and cannot be divested therefrom. It is concluded that Aristotle, Nietzsche and National-Socialism share common ground to the measure that all three ideologies emanate from the same basic ground motive of form and matter and all three support the notion of a biopolitical totalitarian state. Proceeding from this ground motive Nietzsche's vitalism and National-Socialism ultimately carried Aristotelian biopolitcs to its logical conclusion.

    • Authors: B.J. Van der Walt
Abstract: Contra or pro evolution and evolutionism? Three Christian biologists' reflections on the origin and development of the world and the human beingThe viewpoints of the following three prominent natural scientists within the Reformed Christian tradition on the origin and evolution of the world are discussed in this essay: the Dutch zoologist, J. Harry Diemer (1904-1945), J.J. Duyvené de Wit (1909-1965), professor at the erstwhile University of the Orange Free State, and Jan Lever (1922-2010) from the Free University in Amsterdam. Their viewpoints reveal some similarities as well as radical differences. They all started with A. Kuyper's (1837-1920) viewpoint on evolution and evolutionism in 1899 but developed in different directions.Diemer's contribution was his reaction against deistic and supernaturalist viewpoints about wonders. According to him wonders imply the hidden developmental potential or evolution of God's miracles of creation, redemption and providence.According to De Wit, the correct question to be asked by Christians is not "creation or evolution?" The Bible acknowledges the genesis or unfolding of creation. Evolution is the temporal, continuing development of the already (before time) completed divine act of creation. However, De Wit very clearly argued contra evolutionism.Lever's viewpoint is discussed in greater detail. He attempted to reconcile his evolutionary biology with the biblical idea of God as Creator. However, a growing tension between the two is evident and became more pronounced after about 1970, as is indicated in a next published article (cf. Van der Walt, 2016b).

In considering definitions of religion, it becomes clear that as many thinkers as there are, so many definitions do they bring to the fore. Although the etymological study of the word helps to indicate clear lines regarding the various schools of thought on religion, every derivation of the etymology of "religion" is purely the understanding of each author on the nature of religion. Through understanding the etymology of religion, one is able to determine three main lines, which in turn serve as the basis for study of the historical books on religion. The three main lines that serve as the basis for religious thinking are; awareness of the divine, being bound to the divine, to worship the godhead. The historical study of religion reaches a climax in the time of the Reformation and Renaissance when the concept of Philosophy of Religion first made its appearance. The Reformation and Renaissance symbolise an important distinction in the thinking on religion, which had developed out of diverse epistemological viewpoints. These diverse epistemological viewpoints are clearly found in the thinking of Jonathan Edwards and Immanuel Kant. Edwards' epistemology is characterised by revelation and that of Kant by human reasoning. The anatomy of religion is thus linked to the epistemological viewpoint of an individual person. Investigation of matters such as religious tolerance does not simply require definitions of religion; it is necessary to penetrate through to the core differences, the epistemological differences. Highlighting epistemological differences will not, of course, resolve the conflict, but will facilitate the process of reasoning and debate on religious differences.

Sustainable development was introduced globally by the Bruntland Report in 1987, defining it as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs (WCED, 1987:43). This classic view of sustainability ignore according to Imran, Alam and Beaumont (2014:137) the present need of nature and the environment. In the build environment new definitions on sustainability has replaced it.This study shows that when calculating the construction cost of building material - in this case different roofing materials for a house, it is not only the marginal cost that should be taken into account, but also the environmental cost. Snell (2004:42) uses the term embodied energy for products to give an indication of the total energy used to produce it, as well as for its transport and installation. By calculating the embodied energy of the different materials, it is also clear that thatched roofs are the best choice on behalf of environmental impact assessment.Architects and quantity surveyors as stewards should bring these facts to the attention of their clients to thereby take up their responsibility towards the environment.

The necessity of Scripture-based fatherhood as a solution to the continuing problem of absent fathers in South AfricaThe absence of any parent in a family system causes a vacuum with respect to the parenting role and it affects the family's ability to function effectively. In the South African context father absence is on the increase and it frequently generates problems such as broken families, undesirable and aggressive behaviour among children, single parenting, financial and social problems as well as poverty. The role of the father and his physical presence are of utmost importance in the life of children because his fatherhood role contributes to the child's cognitive development and intellectual functioning. The author views this problem of father absence as a matter of seriousness and concern, thus the cry for the Bible as a possible solution. In this article it appears and becomes clear that a Sola Scriptura policy is being used. The article therefore focuses on Biblical truth and departure points from literature to highlight the importance of fatherhood. Scripture is not just an authoritative source of teaching, correction and admonition but also serves as an exceptional guideline and measure that speak of the uniqueness of God as Father, while presenting answers regarding the worth of an earthly father within a family system.

  • Teachers' perceptions of the dimensions of Hord's professional learning
model in relation to their principal's expectations of collaboration
    • Authors: G.M. Steyn
Abstract: A case study was done to determine the perceptions of staff at a South African primary school with a strong Christian culture regarding the existence of a professional learning community (PLC) in relation to the expectations of the principal in implementing such a community. This involved a quantitative research design employing Hord's model to investigate the teachers' perceptions of how the five dimensions of the PLC were attained. These dimensions included: (1) shared leadership; (2) a shared vision and values; (3) individual and shared learning; (4) shared practice; and (5) supportive conditions. The study also used a qualitative research design to assess the expectations of the principal regarding these mentioned dimensions. The findings show that the dimensions of Hord's model to a large extent were realised, according to the teachers, which therefore met the expectations of the principal as explained in the study.'n Gevallestudie is gedoen om die persepsies van personeel in 'n Suid-Afrikaanse skool met 'n sterk Christelike grondslag te bepaal aangaande die bestaan van 'n professionele leergemeenskap (PLG) met betrekking tot die verwagtinge van die skoolhoof in die implementering van hierdie gemeenskap.

    • Authors: Andries Raath
Abstract: Legal-sociological grounds of law and state in politocratic communitarianism. A discourse on some aspects of meta-ethical historicism in Afrikaans political and legal literaturePolitocracy is a phrase coined by a Pretoria law academic, Koos Malan, and supported by Danie Goosen, a religious philosopher from another Pretoria academic institution. Legal-methodologically speaking politocracy approaches political and legal institutions from a metaethical historicist perspective. The sociological grounds of this form of communitarianism emanate from Aristotelian legal and political thought on the polis, Scholastic philosophy of being and neo-Hegelian philosophy as the ideal form of organismic community. This study finds that politocracy is a universalist political theory, limiting both the factual and the normative dimensions of law. Furthermore, politocratic jurisprudence confuses the idea of law with the concept of law and has a very narrow view of the complexities of legal life. Contrary to politocratic legal and political theory, it is argued that the diverse legal interests in society can only be properly managed by the state as a public legal institution, that a clear distinction has to be maintained between public law as the internal communal law of the state which, by virtue of the nature of the state, is always governed by relations of authority (those of the ruler and ruled) and civil law, on the other hand, being the inter-individual law applicable to all individuals and societal relations in the national territory. Furthermore, it is argued that constitutional states are based on or grounded in constitutive constitutional law principles such as those of constitutional representation, the separation and balance of powers, regional and functional decentralisation and fundamental rights. These constitutive principles peculiar to constitutional law should always be applied in accordance with the notion of the res publica,in the sense of a public structure embodying the principles of justice. This regulative principle presupposes that the state will be organised according to the constitutive principles of constitutional law. In the modern constitutional state this happens only if, in structuring the state, the culture and historical wielders of political power are guided by the regulative principle of the res publica.

  • 'n Reformatories-filosofiese evaluering van (semi-)mistieke spiritualiteit
    • Authors: B.J. Van der Walt
Abstract: A Reformational-philosophical evaluation of (semi-)mystical spiritualityTo a large degree one's view on and evaluation of a mystical and semi-mystical way of life is determined by one's religious and worldviewish orientation and, in the case of scholars, also by one's philosophical presuppositions. This explains the great, often conflicting, descriptions and typologies of and positions taken toward mysticism, a phenomenon of growing popularity in both scholarly and non-academic circles. Already from the previous four contributions on this topic (cf. Van der Walt, 2015b, 2015c, 2015d and 2015e) it was clear that some contemporary secular theories reveal a positive attitude, while others are negative about mystical spiritualities. The article will testify to the same difference of positions among Christians. Therefore thinking Christians are confronted with the following urgent question: Should a mystical view of life and practice - notwithstanding the fact that in the past mysticism was theologically condoned and is today still propagated as biblically sound piety - be acceptable in the light of a Scripturally-obedient, Reformational philosophy? To provide an answer to this question the present writer relies on the pioneering work of two Dutch Christian thinkers from the previous century. Especially their insights about the ontic and anthropological philosophical basis of mysticism open the possibility to a thorough understanding and evaluation. In this investigation, therefore, the following route will be followed. The introduction provides a brief review of the author's previous research as well as the problem that confronts us. It also testifies to the diverging viewpoints among Christians through the ages as well as to the present lack of clarity about what mysticism really entails. The second main sections focus on the descriptions and evaluations of proff. H.W. Obbink and D.H.Th. Vollenhoven. The next part first summarises the typical characteristics of (semi-)mysticism and then concludes by emphasising the clear and decisive difference between this type of spirituality and the biblical message of genuine piety.'n Reformatories-filosofiese evaluering van die (semi-)mistieke spiritualiteit Iemand se visie op en standpunt oor 'n mistieke en semi-mistieke lewensbeskouing en praktyk word tot 'n groot mate bepaal deur sy/haar religieuse, lewensbeskoulike en (in die geval van wetenskaplikes) filosofiese uitgangspunte.

  • The tension between (methodological) individualism and holism
    • Authors: Danie Strauss
Abstract: Schumpeter, a student of Max Weber, introduced the phrase methodological individualism in 1908. For Weber concepts such as 'state', 'club' and 'feudalism' are reducible to 'understandable' actions of individual human beings. Individualism and holism touch deep-seated beliefs, prompting Jellinek to describe them as two opposing world views, an individualistic-atomistic one and a collectivistic-universalistic world view. The modern mechanistic world view has been atomistic by understanding the world in terms of particles in motion. The 'strong' sense of the phrase methodological individualism soon has exceeded the original quantitative meaning of the one and the many. Just compare expressions such as institutional individualism, structural individualism, and supervenience individualism. Ultimately the key terms employed in individualist and holist theories respectively derive from the numerical and spatial aspects of reality. What is required is acknowledging the uniqueness and mutual coherence between number and space, analogous to the foundational role of social relationships in respect of economic activities. In conclusion a brief analysis is given of the complexity involved in characterizing a social form of life, transcending the mutually exclusive opposition between methodological individualism and holism and highlighting the significance of the principle of sphere-sovereignty, one of the cornerstones of a Christian social philosophy.

  • Using films to enhance theological studies
    • Authors: Pieter Verster
Abstract: Films, including secular films, are useful educational tools to enhance theological studies and encourage debate. The research methodology in this regard is to evaluate literature on the educational aspects of films in theological education, to evaluate the influence of films - especially secular films - on students by requiring them to write reviews to explain how a specific film can be of value in the discussion in the discipline, and to evaluate the educational aspect in class discussions of these films. Films such as "Life is beautiful", "The life of Pi", "Dead Poets Society", "Avatar", etc. were screened and discussed. The implications of these films for theology and the church are discussed. The major result is that films as an educational tool enhance student participation and debate on intrinsic issues. New educational methods are clearly available with these presentations and the implications are that students receive a much better overview of the related discipline. Films soos "Life is beautiful", "The life of Pi", "Dead Poets Society", "Avatar", ens. is vertoon en bespreek.

    • Authors: Andries H. Snyman
Abstract: The discussion of God's covenant in Hebrews 8 forms part of the section on the superiority of the highpriesthood of Christ to the Levitical priesthood, which begins in 4:14 and concludes in 10:18. As the argument develops, it becomes increasingly clear that there are not only aspects of discontinuity, but also of continuity between the old system set up under Moses and the new one established in Christ. This also applies to the old and new covenant, as described in chapter 8:6-13. The purpose of this article is to investigate God's covenant within the context of chapter 8. In the first part the distinction between continuity and discontinuity is described from an epistemological perspective. The second part deals with the way in which the author of the letter uses it in describing the covenant of God in the old and new dispensations. It is argued that the theme of God's covenant entails an implicit awareness of the foundational relationship between continuity (constancy) and discontinuity (change), which enables him to explain the identity of the covenant in this specific chapter. The article also pays attention to several rhetorical means used by the author to persuade his readers to his point of view, thereby encouraging them to persevere on their pilgrimage to the heavenly kingdom that Christ as high priest has prepared for them.

  • Three current developments in teaching-learning and knowledge creation and
the implications thereof for education : a reformational perspective
    • Authors: J.L. Van der Walt
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to survey the following three contemporary developments in the conceptualisation of teaching-learning and of knowledge creation and to spell out the implications thereof for education: the rise of constructivist learning theories, inter-culturalism and the reality of multiple ways of thinking. Social action theory is applied in an effort to get a more over-arching understanding of these developments that have already been affecting education worldwide. The last part of the article is devoted to a transcendental critique of these developments in an effort to arrive at an appropriate reformational-educational response to them.

  • Are the variable functional capacities of social structures rooted in
           human nature?
    • Authors: Danie Strauss
Abstract: Reflections on "human nature" are found throughout the Western intellectual legacy. From Greek antiquity onwards human nature has been related to an understanding of human society. The effect was that human nature acquired a mediating or co-conditioning role in respect of the way in which society is shaped or structured. The implication is that the type laws for human society became dependent upon human nature instead of norming it. From a systematic perspective this amounts to a misunderstanding of the relationship between modal universality and the typicality of type laws. Concrete societal entities function in a typonomic way within the various modal aspects, thus reflecting their "typonomicity". However, the scope of the modal aspects of reality displays an unspecified universality. The link between human nature and human society recently surfaced in a work of Jonathan Chaplin. He argues that normative societal structures are "variable, historical channels for the communal pursuit of specific, though universal, functional capacities rooted in (created) human nature". The first part of this article investigates a number of significant historical lines, running via Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and Marsilius of Padua to modernity and post-modernity. Throughout this history the human person as a rational-ethical being embodies an impulse towards the formation of community. Since Marsilius of Padua the theme of human autonomy has surfaced in close relation to the so called Copernican turn in epistemology which eventually has given birth to the motive of logical creation and the social construction of reality. In their own way Lakoff, Johnson and Merleau-Ponty have developed a view of the human subject in its supposed shaping of the very possibilities for conceptualization and categorization. Merleau-Ponty believes that "our body is not primarily in space, it is of it". The rest of the article discusses some elements of Chaplin's alternative view on the capacities of human nature and their role in the flourishing of being human. It commences with a misunderstanding of Dooyeweerd's idea of the act-structure as one of the bodily individuality-structures of a person (illuminated in a Diagram). His aim is to provide an alternative view - one in which the principles of possibility of which Dooyeweerd speaks are seen as fully embedded in human nature. These principles are viewed by him as emerging from the "possibilities or potentials given with the created structure of the human person". It turns out that this alternative view suffers from a number of problems, intimately related to an alternative understanding of the relation between modal universality and type laws, as well as four issues discussed in more detail (paragraphs 21-24). In these paragraphs modal universality and type laws are discussed as well as the distinction between constancy and change (principle and variable positivization) and the question whether or not the structural principle of the state has only emerged during the past few centuries. The overall conclusion reached is that neither modal laws (norms) nor type laws (norms) derive their norming meaning from human nature. Rather, these norms should be observed by human subjects, whether in a norm-conforming or antinormative way. The variable functional capacities of social structures are therefore not rooted in human nature - they are rooted in the applicable modal laws and societal type laws. Merleau-Ponty glo dat "our body is not primarily in space, it is of it".

           negentiende-eeuse Réveil in Nederland
    • Authors: Bennie J. Van der Walt
Abstract: The religious-theological and philosophical context of the nineteenth century Réveil in the NetherlandsBeginning during the last years of the previous century, and continuing up to today, ordinary church members as well as leading theologians of reformed denominations (e.g. Reformed and Dutch Reformed) are earnestly discussing the lack of credibility and growth in their churches. They indicate the urgent need for ecclesiastical renewal. Questions like the following are asked. What could be the causes of the decay and decline? How could it be overcome? Can we perhaps learn something from our past? Against this background this contribution firstly draws attention to an important, but in the Afrikaans and English speaking world little known movement - the Réveil or re-awaking across nineteenth century Europe. Although this movement occurred about two centuries ago some clear similarities between then and now exist. Furthermore, the impact of the Dutch Réveil was not confined to the relatively limited time and small geographical space (Holland) during its flourishing, but reverberated far beyond, resulting in a wide-ranging spectrum of Christian involvements in society at large. The second section of this essay provides a brief characterisation of the Réveil. The third sketch the different-rationalistic philosophical currents of the time, viz. scientialism, practical enlightenment and idealism, mentions some of their representatives as well as their influence on church and theology. The main part of the investigation consists of section four and five. Section four indicates how the Réveil was, firstly, a personally-focussed religious reaction against dry, formalistic reformed-scholastic orthodoxy. Secondly, how it responded on a worldviewish-philosophical level to especially the current but secular enlightenment philosophy or Aufklärung. Section five switches from reaction to influence and argues that the thinkers of the Réveil were religiously influenced by contemporary pietism and philosophically by romanticism. From these very complex interactions a unique renewal movement was born, a rich heritage. Against the backdrop of these varying historical currents are we able to assess how unique the Réveil really was. The concluding section (six) indicates some points of relevance for our present impasse. Secularism, for instance, growing already during the Réveil, has increased tremendously today and may - in spite of the fact the many Christians are still unaware of its dangers in their own midst - be regarded as the number one challenge to a Christian way of thinking and living.

           'pa-nood'
    • Authors: Wentzel Coetzer; Vian Louw
Abstract: A pastoral exploration of the effect of 'father wounds', 'father hunger', and 'father need' In this article firstly a couple of historical markers will be indicated with reference to the concepts of 'father wounds', 'father hunger' and 'father need'. The void referring to research on the terrain of this theme will then be raised, as well as the onslaught on the role of the father in general. Five contributing factors to 'father wounds', 'father hunger' and 'father need' will be consecutively discussed, namely: family structures that are busy changing; changing career structures; parents who are forced to fulfil different roles and levels of involvement; the shift between traditional and contemporary gender roles; adult pleasure, the digital era, and the role of peer groups. The second part of the article focuses on a number of practical guidelines to restore the father relationship again. Aspects that, for example, prominently figure here, are the following: identifying the problem; identifying the symptoms; collecting all the facts; identifying family secrets and family myths; verbalising that which had not been said before; re-formulating the past; processing the losses; to guard against impulsive overreactions; the importance of forgiveness; the invitation to others to share your journey; exploring new roles; the allocation of new meaning to the past; the experience of raising a son yourself; the discovery that there is only one Perfect Father, and by daily maintaining an intimate relationship with Him, can lead to the healing of wounds and the recovery of relationships.

  • Southern African perspectives on the role of womanhood in 1 Timothy
           2:11-15
    • Authors: Benno Zuiddam
Abstract: An overview of contemporary approaches by Southern African scholars indicates that 1 Timothy 2:11-15 has patriarchal overtones which are irreconcilable with socio-political agenda's that aim at a greater leadership involvement of women in church or society. A philological examination of 1 Timothy 2:11-15 brings similarities in argument to light with Matthew 19:4-6, emphasizing the non-cultural basis for the separate roles for women and men that the author of 1 Timothy envisages. An examination of the textual context shows that this different role for womanhood is not abusive, but aims at an environment that is respectful towards women and in harmony with the purposes of humanity's Creator God. To preserve the integrity of the text and its message, either a traditional or a 'wild life' solution is preferable, where 1 Timothy 2:11-15 is allowed to function in the context of its own habitat and worldview.

  • De Practijk der Godzaligheid. Studies over "De practycke ofte oeffeninghe

           (1618-1651), W.J. op 't Hof en F.W. Huisman : boekresensies
    • Authors: A.W.G. Raath
So verskyn The Practice of Piety van die Anglikaanse biskop Lewis Bayly (ca. 1575-1631) in 1620 in Amsterdam as De practycke der godtzaligheydt. F.E. Stoeffler merk op: "The description of the state of misery is one of the most elequent in English literature".

  • The purpose of educating the human spirit
    • Authors: J.L. Van der Walt; C.C. Wolhuter F.J. Potgieter
Abstract: Hierdie artikel verduidelik ten eerste wat spiritualiteit as menslike eienskap of hoedanigheid alles behels, ook vanuit Bybelse perspektief. This article explains, firstly, what spirituality as a human attribute entails, also from a Biblical perspective. It then goes on to explain that the "spirit of education" is ideally born in the interrelationship between the role-players in the education process, in this case, the teacher and learner, particularly in the confluence of their spirits. This kind of animated ("spirited") education leads to integrity of personality, creativity and creative problem-solving which, in turn, could be regarded as a prerequisite for coping with life in a globalised and cosmopolitan future.

  • Views of Christian fathers of their role as mentors in the transmission of
           values within the family context
    • Authors: F.E. Freeks; M. Greeff G.A. Lotter
Abstract: There is a crisis in society with respect to peoples' values. Families are living in an era of moral anxiety and not only South Africa but also the rest of the world is suffering from a value-dilemma. Homes, schools and institutions have problems with the behaviour and values of children. This study explored and described the views about Christian fathers of their role as mentor in the transmission of values within the family context. voluntary sampling. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews with the designated group in the broader Tlokwe Municipality. Field notes were taken after each interview. Data analysis was conducted using open coding as well as using an independent co-coder. The results indicated that Christian fathers view their role as vital and relevant in the current situation of families. The six main themes that emerged from the semi-structured interviews with the fathers were their personal experiences of mentorship while growing up, the expectations of the father as mentor in the lives of children, the importance of values, the importance of mentorship, the problematic factors preventing mentoring and the transmission of values and the role of the father should be emphasized in the home.
