  • Usefulness Model for The Redesign of Graduate’s Student Management
           Information System

      Abstract: Postgraduate Student Management Information System (PSMI) is developed for managing the academic matters of postgraduate students, such as registration, appointment of supervisor, proposal defence, appointment of examiners and managing oral defence examination. The system which is known as SMASH was developed in the Faculty of Information Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to facilitate the task of the Graduate Management Unit. However, SMASH is rarely used due to usability problems. Among the problems are, the administrative staffs are not aware of the graduate programs applications which are made through SMASH. There is a lack of functionality especially on the menu and the design of the interface. SMASH provides functionality that is limited to only download the application form. This paper discusses the usefulness model development that can be used as a guideline to improve the system. The usefulness model is developed by adapting IS0 9241 and ISO 9126 usability standards. This study employs User-Centered Design method which involves students and faculty administrative staffs. This study starts by identifying the usability problems through Heuristic Evaluation and analysing the user requirements through the system analysis and interview. The preliminary study discovers that there is a need for improvement in the interface design and the functionality of the system to meet user requirements. The user requirement analysis and the proposed improvement serves as the basis in redesigning the system prototype. The usefulness model is then verified by 30 respondents through survey.

  • Comelgetz Prototype in Learning Prayers among Children

      Abstract: In a natural user interface (NUI) interaction, users no longer need to use the input device to interact with a computer such as a keyboard or remote control. There are a number of issues mainly on misinterpretations of gestures that are often reported in NUI research. Among the user group is children. A study was conducted to explore the needs among children in understanding NUI interaction. This paper presents a NUI prototype in learning prayers among children. Event Driven Gesture Sequence Mechanism (EDGSM) was implemented in the prototype to address misinterpretations of gestures. This study aims to evaluate the ability of NUI prototype in learning and experience of children in learning prayers. The analysis found that the assessment of learning of NUI able to improve the learning performance and a better experience compared to traditional learning via video. However, the NUI prototype, which is not equipped with EDGSM mechanism, showed no significant increase in learning performance. The prototype equipped with EDGSM showed a significant result and managed to reduce misinterpretation of gestures by 43.27% compared to the prototype using standard mechanisms. This study indirectly encourages NUI designers and developers to focus on the problem of gestures misinterpretation and concern on the needs and capabilities of users, especially children.

  • Global and Local Clustering Soft Assignment for Intrusion Detection
           System: A Comparative Study

      Abstract: Intrusion Detection System (IDS) plays an important role in computer network defence mechanism against malicious objects. The ability of IDS to detect new sophisticated attacks compared to traditional method such as firewall is important to secure the network. Machine Learning algorithm such as unsupervised learning and supervised learning is capable to solve the problem of classification in IDS. To achieve that, KDD Cup 99 dataset is used in experiments. This dataset contains 5 million instances with 5 different categories which are Normal, DOS, U2R, R2L and Probe. With such a large dataset, the learning process consumes a lot of processing times and resources. Clustering is unsupervised learning method that can be used for organizing data by grouping similar features into same group. In literature, many researchers used global clustering approach whereby all input will be combined and clustered to construct a codebook. However, there is an alternative technique namely local clustering approach whereby the input will be split into 5 different categories and clustered independently to construct 5 different codebooks. The main objective of this research is to compare the classification performance between the global and local clustering approaches. For this purpose, the soft assignment approach is used for indexing on KDD input and SVM for classification. In the soft assignment approach, the smallest distance values are used for attack description and RBF kernel for SVM to classify attack. The results show that the global clustering approach outperforms the local clustering approach for binary classification. It gives 83.0% of the KDD Cup 99 dataset.  However, the local clustering approach outperforms the global clustering approach on multi-class classification problem. It gives 60.6% of the KDD Cup 99 dataset.

  • Visual Assessment on Product Label Design Criteria Through Eye Tracking

      Abstract: Product label is a printed product information displayed on the product packaging. The product label designs are the combination of text and image elements. The process of designing a product label is complicated as there are various types of text and images involved. Product label designs that are less attractive wouldl affect purchasing choices. The purpose of this study is to identify the design criterias of texts and images to help consumer in their purchase selection. The study focuses on the visual assessment through eye tracking method on food and beverage product label. The eye movement observation method conducted using eye tracker device to track 6 parameters of eye movements on the product label during purchasing selection and determine 7 main text and image design criterias for food and beverage product label. The consumers were selected among university students. The study has found that the purchase selection of bread and mineral water product from the food and beverage product category are the most difficult. There are similarities in eye tracking parameters on product label visual assessment during purchasing choices. The similarities of text and image design criteria on food and beverage products label include i) shape text: uppercase and lowercase, ii) type family text: sanserif, iii) width text: condensed, iv) slope text: roman, v) weight text: bold and vi) nature image: illustration.

  • Public Sector ICT Strategic Planning: Framework of Monitoring and
           Evaluating Process

      Abstract:  A successful implementation of the ICT strategic plan (ISP) lies in the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) practice. However, M&E is often neglected due to the usage of impractical methods. Furthermore, the current ISP methodology does not account for M&E process. M&E should be appropriate to the organization’s environment and accordingly fits the characteristics of the type of planning. This study aims to identify strategic planning M&E processes and activities to produce the best practice of M&E process for ISP implementation vis a vis serve as a guide to public organizations. The Malaysia public sector was chosen as a case study with interview and documents analysis as data collection techniques.The results revealed that the M&E process involves four phases and 10 steps which were then used as the basis for the development of the proposed framework that are named as MEISP framework. The framework could serve as a guide for the public agencies for practicing M&E for the ISP implementation.

  • Semantic Measure Based on Features in Lexical Knowledge Sources

      Abstract: Semantic measures between concepts require some of cognitive capabilities such as categorization and reasoning to estimate semantic association among concepts. For this reason, this problem has numerous applications in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, information retrieval, text clustering, text categorization and many other related fields. Measuring lexical semantic relatedness generally requires certain background information about the concept or terms. Semantic measures between concepts are divided into two main sources: knowledge based and unstructured corpora. Both resources play important role in the task of measuring lexical semantic relatedness. Knowledge-based semantic measures have been proposed to estimate semantic similarity between two concepts using several approaches such as ontology-based, graph-based and concept's vector approaches. This paper reviews existing semantic similarity measures which depend on the lexical source and discusses the various approaches on semantic measures which include the path-based, information content, gloss-based and feature-based measures. This paper also focuses on semantic measures that are based on features using lexical knowledge sources and discusses some issues that arise in these measures.Pengukuran semantik antara konsep memerlukan sebahagian daripada keupayaan kognitif, seperti pengkategorian, ingatan, membuat keputusan dan penaakulan serta penggunaan dan penemuan analogi di kalangan yang lain. Masalah tersebut mempunyai aplikasi di dalam kecerdasan buatan, pemprosesan bahasa tabii, capaian maklumat, pengelompokan teks, pengkategorian teks dan pelbagai bidang yang berkaitan. Pengukuran hubungan semantik leksikal secara amnya memerlukan beberapa latar belakang maklumat mengenai konsep atau terma. Pengukuran semantik antara konsep dibahagikan kepada dua asas utama; berasaskan pengetahuan dan berasaskan korpus tidak tersusun. Kedua sumber ini memainkan peranan yang penting dalam tugasan pengukuran hubungan semantik leksikal. Pengukuran semantik berdasarkan sumber pengetahuan telah diperkenalkan bagi menganggarkan persamaan semantik antara dua konsep menggunakan beberapa pendekatan seperti berdasarkan ontologi, berdasarkan graf dan pendekatan konsep vektor. Kertas ini mengulas pengukuran persamaan semantik sedia ada yang bergantung kepada sumber leksikal dan membincangkan pelbagai pendekatan terhadap pengukuran semantik termasuk pengukuran berasaskan laluan, kandungan maklumat, berasaskan glos dan berasaskan ciri.   • A Bahasa Malaysia Interactive Book App as a Speech-Language Threapy Tool
           for Children with Language Delay

      Abstract: Interactive story books (ISB) mobile application is defined as an app for children to practice their speech, language and literacy skills. Information has shown that ISB can be used to support education and learning for individuals with language delay. In general, visual and auditory artifacts are included in this kind of app which makes the app an incredible aid to facilitate speech and language skills. Considering the situation in Malaysia, many of the developed ISB suffers from a lack of practical experience with children, especially for the children who have language delay. The evidence can be seen from the lack of apps for the children whose first language is Bahasa Malaysia. Malaysian children with language delay and their parents are the subjects in this research. The children and their parents were asked to answer a survey about the ISB requirement. The survey focused on collecting the requirement for the ISB targeted for children with language delay. The survey data were analyzed to get the requirements for the app. Based on the requirements, the ISB can be developed using the Android platform. The main finding of the study is the practical requirements of ISB in Bahasa Malaysia for children with language delay in collaboration with Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs), parents and children.

  • Heuristics-Based Method for Head and Modifier Detection in Malay Sentences
           from the Culturalheritage Domain

      Abstract: The process of detection for the head and modifier in Malay sentences from the cultural heritage domain is difficult to identify. This is due to the position of head and modifier which varies in sentences depending on the sentence structures. Hence, there are different point of views about the theory and concept of detection for the head and modifier in a compound noun that have been discussed by language experts. Additionally, the existing research is also limited especially in the areas of computational linguistics. Therefore, research should be conducted to identify appropriate methods especially used in the detection of head and modifier which appear in Malay setences from the cultural heritage domain. The aim of this study is to construct a list of heuristic rules to be used for detecting the position of compound nouns in Malay sentences from cultural heritage domain. By using 15 rules, the position of head and modifier that exist in a compound noun can also be detected. These rules are called heuristic rules. The purpose of formulating these 15 rules is to detect the head and modifier that exist in the Malay sentences from the cultural heritage domain. To measure the accuracy of the results, precision, recall and F1-score values are used. Based on the results of the experiments, Sentence Structure of Malay Cultural Heritage Domain (SADWBM) have an F1-score of 80.4% compared to Noun Phrase Structure (SFN) which is 56%. Consequently, SADWBM shows better scores compared to SFN. Therefore it is clear that the approach used in this study is effective in resolving the identified problems.

  • Lean Production System Definition From The Perspective of Malaysian

      Abstract: “Muda” is a term in the Toyota Production System (TPS), which refers to waste that occurs in the manufacturing process. Waste is removed from the production process by eliminating activity that does not add value to the customer through a continuous improvement activities. This is the basis concept for TPS in order to produce products that meet customers’s demand and requirements which then indirectly reduce the cost of production. Lean production concept has been implemented in various types of organizations. However, a low success rate for the implementation of lean production has become the attention of practitioners and researchers in the industry. Among the issues that contribute to this situation are confusion about the definition of lean and lack of knowledge on how to implement lean, which caused misunderstanding. In addition, there are no strategic planning and lack of support from the top management. Thus, the objective of this study is to develop a definition of lean from Malaysian context. The study is expected to help organizations implementing lean concepts with success and thus increasing the organizational competitiveness.
