  • An Intelligent Hybrid Approach Using KNN-GA to Enhance the Performance of
           Digital Protection Transformer Scheme

      Abstract: This paper presents a novel hybrid K nearest neighbor-genetic algorithm (KNN-GA)-based digital protection transformer scheme, which effectively discriminates its internal faults with noninternal faults. The internal faults include the faults within the current transformer (CT) locations on two sides of the transformer. The noninternal fault includes magnetizing inrush current, sympathetic inrush current, recovery inrush current, external faults (faults outside the CT locations), and overfluxing. In conventional differential protection of a transformer, many maloperations of differential relay have been reported under certain working conditions. A new hybrid KNN-GA algorithm is put forward to improve the performance of the differential relay of a transformer. In this paper, real-time experimental results are presented for laboratory custom built differential relay model of a transformer. The generated experimental data for one power frequency cycle for various operating conditions is used by MATLAB to test the performance of a proposed algorithm. The proposed scheme has also been implemented on a digital signal processor TMS 320C6416T for a real-world application. The performance evaluation shows that compared with conventional methods, the proposed algorithm has a good reliability in terms of discrimination between internal and noninternal faults.

  • Terminal Sliding Mode Control Allocation for Nonlinear Systems

      Abstract: In this paper, the problem of tracking control is studied for a class of nonlinear systems with actuator faults/failures. The control strategy has two steps. In the first step, a virtual control input is found using terminal sliding mode control which can easily tackle the output tracking control problem in a finite time. In the second step, control allocation (CA) transforms the virtual control signals to the real-control inputs. The CA problem is solved using a neural network which satisfies control constraints and during faults or failures redistributes the control signals to the healthy actuators. The effectiveness of the proposed control approach is demonstrated by the simulation results of the near space vehicle system.

  • Pilot Decontamination in TDD Multicell Massive MIMO Systems With Infinite
           Number of BS Antennas

      Abstract: The performance of time division duplex (TDD) multiple-input multiple-output (M-MIMO) systems is mainly limited by the pilot contamination, which is a negative effect of reusing uplink pilot sequences in the neighboring cells. A pilot decontamination scheme for TDD multicell M-MIMO systems with an infinite number of base station (BS) antennas is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme uses Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequences as uplink pilot sequences and implements distinct orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) code rows at each BS. The set of uplink pilot sequences at each BS is multiplied element-wise with the BS-specific OVSF code row to make uplink pilot sequences orthogonal across the network. Then, a mobile station randomly selects one of these multiplied ZCs from a given set and transmits it on the random access channel at the commencement of coherence interval. The performance of the uplink and downlink rates of the proposed scheme is compared with those of the time-shifted pilot scheme for an infinite number of BS antennas. The simulation results authenticate the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • Rotor Flux and Rotor Resistance Estimation Using Extended
           Luenberger-Sliding Mode Observer (ELSMO) for Three Phase Induction Motor
           Control

      Abstract: The accuracy for the three-phase induction motor control highly depends on obtaining/estimating the undetectable motor parameter values such as the rotor resistance and flux. An extended Luenberger-sliding mode observer (ELSMO) is proposed in this paper to estimate the rotor flux and resistance along with the adaptation method to compensate for the error caused by the motor parameter mismatch with the model in the controller. The motor parameter mismatch is caused mainly by resistance variation due to changes in the temperature during the operation and must be rectified in real time. The rotor resistance estimation is based on the Lyapunov stability theory and fed back into the ELSMO for more accurate current/flux/resistance estimation.

  • Study of a Modified Flux-Coupling-Type SFCL for Efficient Fault
           Ride-Through in a PMSG Wind Turbine Under Different Types of Faults

      Abstract: Regarding the permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind turbine system, this paper proposes a modified flux-coupling-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) to enhance its fault ride-through (FRT) performance. The modified SFCL's structural principle and theoretical influence on the PMSG ride through capability are conducted, and a comparison of the SFCL and a dynamic braking chopper (BC) is performed. Using MATLAB, a detailed model of a 1.5-MW PMSG-based wind turbine integrated with the SFCL/BC is built, and the simulations of symmetrical and asymmetrical faults are done. From the results, introducing the modified SFCL can limit the fault currents in the generator and grid sides. In addition, using the modified SFCL, we are able to compensate the generator voltage and alleviate the dc-link overvoltage. Thus, the wind turbine system's power balance is improved, and also the fault recovery process can be accelerated. On the whole, the modified SFCL is better than the BC for assisting the FRT operation of the PMSG.

  • Coupled Line Filters Using Via-Less End-Connected Broadside Coupled
           Asymmetric Coplanar Striplines

      Abstract: End-connected broadside coupled asymmetric coplanar stripline (ACPS) is proposed and characterized through conformal mapping for application in via-less coupled line filters. The exact similar derived parameters to the conventional ACPS indicate feasibility of using end-connected broadside coupled ACPS in ACPS applications. The end connection can be implemented using copper foil to eliminate the need for vias. Three coupled line filters for different bandwidths of 50%, 75%, and 100% with 1.7-1.85-dB insertion loss are fabricated and measured to demonstrate feasibility. To further improve the selectivity of the filter, a transmission zero is introduced below the passband by adding an inductor.

  • ZIZO: A Novel Zoom-In–Zoom-Out Search Algorithm for the Global
           Parameters of Echo-State Networks

      Abstract: Echo-state networks (ESNs) are a distinct architecture for recurrent neural networks (RNNs). The great advantage of ESN is that they offer an easy way to train the RNN. To make full use of ESN, one needs to first identify their global (hyper) parameters. These are input scaling, leaking rate (for leaky ESN), spectral radius, and the size of the ESN. The most recommended way to get their optimal (or suboptimal) values is by trial-and-error. However, in practice, this method has a very low efficiency. In order to tackle this problem, we propose a novel “zoom-in-zoom-out” (ZIZO) algorithm for generating the global parameters automatically. The proposed technique consists of two major parts. First, we generate random ranges for the parameters of ESNs. Then, based on bootstrap-sampling, we search the optimal solution within the fixed specific ranges. To evaluate the proposed method, we use two different data sets, which are collected from the literature. The obtained results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of ZIZO.

      Abstract: Enhancing the reliability of distribution systems (DSs) has become a necessity due to society's dependence on electric power and the high costs associated with service interruptions. One key technique for improving system reliability is to apply efficient power restoration methodologies, which must include a systematic load prioritization method that considers several practical factors that make the process of load prioritization a complicated and challenging one. This paper presents a dynamic load prioritization model for service restoration in DSs. The method ranks loads by priority and assigns a calculated weight for each load in the system. These weights are dynamic (i.e., time dependent), and can be used as an input for any restoration optimization problem. The proposed load prioritization procedure considers the criticality of the load, the amount of energy consumed, the number of connected customers, the cost of interruption, and the practice of demand side management programs. The Roy Billinton Test System (RBTS) Bus 4 system and the 3-feeder 16-bus test system are used as case studies to implement this method. The results of the case studies show that the proposed prioritizing method was able to quantify the importance of each individual load, and systems' reliability was improved.

  • Inrush Current Limiting of Transformer Primary Winding With Grounded or
           Nongrounded Y-Connection Using Diode Bridges

      Abstract: This paper presents two novel limiters for mitigating inrush current on primary grounded and nongrounded transformers. The simplicity of structure, reliability of operation with a low failure rate, and a lack of influence on steady-state operation of transformers are some benefits of the two proposed inrush current limiters (ICLs). In addition, they do not require any data for the switching angle of circuit breakers or measurement of residual flux. Additionally, the number of diodes and the inductance value of two proposed diode bridges decreases compared to a three diode bridge in three-phase structures and improve bridge type inrush current limiting for primary grounded and nongrounded transformers. The two proposed methods for inrush current limitation are applicable for all transformers, which have a Y of Yn connection in their primary side. The proposed methods can be used for Y-yn, Yn-yn, Y-delta, Yn-delta, and Y-zn connections and there is no limitation on the secondary side winding type. To reduce losses in the steady-state condition, the ICL should be bypassed. To bypass the ICL, at least three switches are used for the topology proposed in conventional methods. For the topology presented in this paper, only one switch is needed to perform the same function.

  • Dual Mode Controller-Based Solar Photovoltaic Simulator for True PV
           Characteristics

      Abstract: Integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels with existing utilities requires effectively controlled converters. While developing and testing such converters, it is difficult to test them with actually installed PV panels owing to unavailability of practical onsite conditions for all the time. For such cases, PV simulators are preferred, which are required to exhibit PV system behavior under working conditions without the use of real outdoor installation. This reduces the time and cost of experimentation. In this paper, a real-time PV simulator based on a dc-dc buck converter is investigated to obtain true PV characteristics. The practical difficulty with PV simulators is that they often get oscillations in the constant current region or constant voltage region of PV characteristics, particularly when the controller is designed using a low-cost digital controller. This paper introduces a novel hysteresis controller to ensure effective operation in both these regions. This dual control strategy ensures effective control in both regions and provides smooth trajectories as per mathematical model or lookup table to mimic any PV characteristics under various temperatures and insolations with the use of the low-cost digital controller. The hardware prototype is constructed with the digital signal controller to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed simulator.

  • Direction of Arrival Estimation of Acoustic Echoes Using Source
           Elimination Method

      Abstract: A new method for the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation for a single narrowband acoustic source with multiple low power echoes is proposed. The mathematical relations between the signal covariance matrix, the sources steering vectors, and the power of the sources are developed in order to expose the contribution of each source. Algorithms to find each of the source's DOA and their respective power are presented. The source elimination method (SEM), based on the elimination of the contribution of each source to improve the DOA estimation, is developed. Monte Carlo simulations are presented, showing that SEM yields more accurate results than multiple signal classification (MUSIC) with forward-backward spatial smoothing (FBSS) to find the echoes' DOA with an echo-to-noise ratio between -13 and -17 dB. Experimental results show that for a small array and two sources with different power, SEM outperforms MUSIC with FBSS.
