  • Energy Trading in the Smart Grid: A Distributed Game-Theoretic Approach

      Abstract: In this paper, we propose both a centralized solution and a distributed game-theoretic approach to solve the problem of energy trading in the smart grid. In particular, we consider a number of geographically distributed consumers that need to buy energy from the neighboring users who have a surplus stored energy to meet their local demands. While buyers minimize their energy bill by buying energy at prices lower than that of the grid, sellers can make profit by selling the extra stored energy, which could have been acquired from affordable renewable resources. Buying energy from neighboring users also helps in reducing the stress on the main grid, which decreases electricity prices and protects the environment. We first formulate the energy trading problem as a centralized optimization problem. Then, we propose a distributed solution based on the game theory that requires each user to merely apply its best response strategy to the current state of the system. Buyers play the game by deciding how much energy to be bought from each seller in order to minimize their energy bill taking into account different constraints tied to the grid infrastructure. Extensive simulations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach in terms of energy bill savings, convergence in acceptable times, and fairness to its users.

  • Toward a Rigorous Approach for Verifying Cyber-Physical Systems Against

      Abstract: Verifying that complex cyber-physical systems such as power plants satisfy the requirements that ensure their proper operation, in particular with respect to safety, dependability, and environmental regulations, is difficult due to the large number of potential situations to be explored in terms of initiating events and their chain of consequences on the behavior of the system. This paper presents a new framework for supporting a methodology that aims at reconciling innovation (ability to explore many different solutions) and safety (ability to avoid unacceptable behavior). The general principle is to produce independently formal models of the requirements, of the possible variants of the design, and of the dynamic behavior of the system for the possible designs, then assemble them together to simulate the full system’s behavior to automatically detect possible violations of the requirements.

  • Two-Diode Model-Based Nonlinear MPPT Controller for PV Systems

      Abstract: The main objective of this contribution is to present a nonlinear maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller for photovoltaic (PV) systems based on a two-diode model of a PV module. The proposed MPPT technique operates in conjunction with a Z-source dc-dc converter as an interface between a PV system and a load. The scheme of the proposed nonlinear MPPT controller consists of the design of a nonlinear MPPT algorithm and a nonlinear controller for the generation of duty cycle. The nonlinearity of the PV model as well as the power electronics converter is taken into account in the design of the MPPT controller. Since the PV model parameters vary depending not only on the values of the insolation and the temperature but also on the position of the operating point on the PV characteristics, an adaptation mechanism based on the two-diode PV model is proposed. Thus, these parameters are updated as per real atmospheric conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed method in transient regime as well as steady-state condition is investigated via MATLAB simulation. Furthermore, simulation results are compared with the conventional perturb and observe and incremental conductance methods. The simulation results highlight the capability of the proposed technique over these conventional methods in terms of an improved response in the transient state, an accurate tracking of MPP as well as a significant reduction in the oscillations around the MPP.

  • Temporal and Spatial Load Management Methods for Cost and Emission

      Abstract: To address the challenge of climate change, reducing emissions due to electric power generation and consumption has received increasing attention worldwide. The previous research efforts have been focused on emission reduction on the generation side, but the positive impacts through demand side load management are often ignored. This paper explores the models of load management to reduce cost and emissions. Five different load management methods are studied and compared using the IEEE 14-bus system and the IEEE 57-bus system. Two of them are centralized methods, i.e., temporal and/or spatial load management schemes that need to have global system information to optimize the overall load management in a whole control area. The remaining three are decentralized methods focusing on the customer side, including a basic self-optimizing method and two advanced self-optimizing methods [sliding window self-optimizing load management and day-ahead self-optimizing load management (DA-SOLM)]. The advanced SOLM schemes need multiple communications between an independent system operator and customers. The results show that the temporal and spatial load management can achieve an effective reduction in cost and emission and the DA-SOLM, especially for a large power system, is able to mitigate locational marginal price spikes.

  • On the Impact of High Penetration of Rooftop Solar Photovoltaics on the
           Aging of Distribution Transformers

      Abstract: This paper investigates the effect of increasing the penetration of Rooftop Solar Photovoltaics (PVs) on a Distribution Transformer’s (DT’s) Loss of Life (LOL). The modeling of the secondary distribution system is introduced and the Markov chain Monte Carlo is used to probabilistically estimate the hourly loading on a DT while the LOL is estimated based on the DT’s thermal model. The results have shown that the minimum impact on the DT’s LOL may be only achieved at 60% penetration of PVs that can be considered as the maximum permissible solar PVs penetration level.

  • Comparison Between Numerical and Analytical Methods of AC Resistance
           Evaluation for Medium-Frequency Transformers: Validation on a Prototype
           and Thermal Impact Analysis

      Abstract: In the future, medium-frequency transformers (with a frequency range of 5–100 kHz) will be major components in dc–dc converter applications, for both medium-voltage direct current and high-voltage direct current networks. Importantly, the corresponding power losses should be accurately calculated in order to reach performance targets (very high efficiency). This paper reviews the most known analytical models that are used to calculate the medium-frequency resistance for several winding technologies. In order to qualify these models in a future design flow, we compare the analytical model results with measurements and 3-D finite-element electromagnetic simulations and the impact on the warming. The adopted design flowchart has been tested on a 17-kHz 180-kVA prototype transformer that will be used in a dual active bridge.

  • Harmonics Mitigation in a Steel Industry Using 11-Level Cascaded
           Multilevel Inverter-Based DSTATCOM

      Abstract: Use of nonlinear loads in power distribution networks is expanding day by day, which results in the deterioration of the power quality of the system. An induction furnace (IF), which is an indispensable component of the steel industry, is one such typical example of a nonlinear load. It injects a considerable amount of harmonics into the supply network and consequently the performance of other loads in its vicinity gets affected. An 11-level cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI)-based distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is implemented to mitigate the harmonic content of an IF in a steel plant. A Simulink model of an IF has been developed using experimental data obtained on-line from an industrial IF using a power quality analyzer. The solution methodology proposed using CMLI-based DSTATCOM reveals the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy for voltage sag mitigation and total harmonic distortion improvement of both load current and voltage as per the IEEE standards. The results obtained are also compared with that reported in the literature recently.

  • Design and Experimental Measurement of EMI Reduction Techniques for
           Integrated Switching DC/DC Converters

      Abstract: This paper presents the design and verification of electromagnetic interference (EMI) reduction techniques for switching dc/dc converters. A 48-V dc/dc converter for electric/hybrid cars is considered as an application case study. An EMI filter with a very low inductor value is designed to reduce the overvoltage issues. The proposed design procedure takes into account the converter impedance and the cable model in order to avoid the state-of-the-art tendency of oversizing the filter components. Thus, the filter implementation is simplified and its EMI reduction capability is kept unaltered. Measurements of near EM field in anechoic room show that, using a low switching frequency for the dc/dc converter, the EMI problem is shifted from radiated to conducted emissions. A SKIP-mode modulation technique is implemented to control the converter output and also to reduce the conducted EMI, as shown by CAD simulations and experimental measurements. In addition, a soft-start technique, which reduces by three times the currents’ spikes, is integrated into the dc/dc converter to minimize the EMI at the car’s starting.

      Abstract: With the emergence of smart grid, which presents the next generation of electrical power systems, residents have the opportunities to manage their home energy usage to reduce energy expenditure. This paper presents a mixed integer linear programming model to optimize the energy production and consumption systems in a smart home with the integration of renewable energy resources, battery storage systems, and gridable vehicles. Numerous case studies are presented by varying significant factors through the design of experiments with the Taguchi method. After that, a heuristic technique is proposed to solve the problem of residential energy management and to minimize the electricity cost of the consumer. Results find the global optimum solution for many consecutive days with important reduction of execution time and by achieving significant energy cost savings of the considered scenarios.

  • Comparison of Static Phase Shifter and Unified Power Flow Controller-Based

      Abstract: The basic interphase power controller (IPC) presents the interesting features of simplicity and low cost but is less flexible than most flexible ac transmission system controllers. A compromise performance can be achieved by replacing the phase shifting transformers with a reduced rating dual unified power flow controller (UPFC) resulting in a unified IPC. The comparison of the basic, phase shifter-based, with a new UPFC-based, control logic is the main goal of this paper. The control variables of the dual UPFC are computed based on an optimization procedure to minimize a given cost function. The results show the higher capability of the proposed logic not only to control the current flow through the transmission line but also to achieve this task with lower branch currents that should lead to reduced power losses.
