  • A Compact and Efficient Implementation of Modified MMF2 Encryption on FPGA

      Abstract: The design of modern architectures with reduced capacity is an important challenge that electronics and computer engineers face. A modern architecture has been proposed for MMF2 encryption algorithm in this paper to reduce the occupied gate level. The algorithm uses an input block size of 64 b, an initiation key of 128 b with nine repetitions. The obtained results indicate to GE16023 decreasing in the hardware cost. The Verilog hardware language description language and QUARTUSII software have been used for simulation. The effectiveness of the method has been proven to be effective in the production of chips from CYCLONEII generation in 0.13- $mu text{m}$ CMOS technology.

  • Characterizing Horn Antenna Signals for Breast Cancer Detection

      Abstract: An in-depth analysis of signals from horn antennas used in breast cancer detection research has been carried out. It was found that following the excitation signal, both the double-ridged and the quad-ridged ultra-wideband horn antennas radiate additional unwanted signals that persistently oscillate. Undesirable signal oscillations sources were identified as the horn antenna cavity resonance and inherent antenna LC resonance. These signals interfere with the tumor’s signal response and need to be eliminated for successful detection of the cancerous growth. This paper proposes solutions to remove or minimize these signals without affecting antenna parameters such as bandwidth, gain, ports isolation, and polarization isolation. Modification of the antenna cavity successfully suppressed the unwanted cavity oscillation. Modification of the antenna waveguide reduced inductance and consequently mitigated LC oscillation. The resulting time and frequency domain horn antenna signals demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Finally, a breast phantom with a tumor is simulated using signals from the original and a modified horn antenna. The delay and sum method is used to create images. The breast images demonstrate enhanced image quality through the reduction of clutter using the proposed techniques. The signal-to-clutter ratios are 0.448 and 1.6823 dB for the images produced by using the original and modified antennas, respectively.

  • Distributed Smart Home Architecture for Data Handling in Smart Grid

      Abstract: Smart homes form an integral part of smart grid infrastructure. Recently, large numbers of sensors have been added within smart homes to enhance home appliance automation and monitoring. This addition raises questions about where the data generated within the home should be processed. The data can be processed either by one central processor or through multiple distributed processors closer to the sensors. This paper proposes a smart home distributed architecture involving home sensors talking directly to a smart gateway installed within the home. The gateway then decides which data should be forwarded to the central processor for further analysis. A test bed is designed to highlight the advantages of this approach. An open data set is used to feed sensor data into the test setup. It is shown that the local processing of data can improve efficiency by effectively utilizing available network bandwidth. Furthermore, local processing is favorable for time-critical smart home applications, since local processing has a faster data communication round trip time as compared with that of central processing. Moreover, we argue that certain calculations, like energy usage prediction for home appliances, can effectively be done locally while the central processor can be used for coordination between different local processors.

  • Monitoring ON-Resistance of MOSFET Devices in Real Time for SVPWM-VSI With
           Direct Compensation

      Abstract: One of the major causes for the operation failure and/or malfunction in a voltage source inverter is from power semiconductor devices, such as MOSFET and IGBT. Especially, under harsh operating environments, the power devices face various mechanical/thermal challenges, which can increase the equipment/device failure rate and cause unexpected interruptions and/or serious safety issues. This paper focuses on estimating the ON-resistance of the MOSFET/IGBT devices in real time while operating in space-vector pulsewidth modulation mode to monitor the status on power MOSFET/IGBT devices in real time, hoping that it can avoid those unexpected interruptions for safety. Since the increase in ON-resistance of the power MOSFET is identified as the fault signature, it is worthwhile to measure ON-resistance to prevent the output voltage distortions and the amplitude reduction from the set reference voltage in advance.

  • Calculation of Admittance Transfer Functions Using Manual Symbolic
           Suspendance Analysis

      Abstract: This paper introduces a new manual symbolic analysis for the calculation of admittance transfer functions. Suspendance terms are expressed in terms of circuit admittances and transadmittances. The admittance transfer function at each node of a circuit is equal to the ratio of the suspendance obtained when the node is open to the suspendance obtained when the node is shorted. To calculate the suspendance for each case, every passive circuit component is shorted one at a time and its admittance is multiplied by the suspendance of the remaining circuit. Admittances of previously shorted components are set to zero in succeeding calculations. The overall suspendance is calculated by summing all individual results obtained from each step. In comparison with all existing circuit analysis methods, suspendance calculation is easier, faster, and more practical.

  • Wide Bandgap Devices in Electric Vehicle Converters: A Performance Survey

      Abstract: This paper introduces a unique quantified study about using low-losses fast-switching wide bandgap (WBG) devices, i.e., gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC), over traditional Silicon (Si) devices in the switching of dc/dc converters, focusing on electric vehicles’ (EVs) machine drive and battery charger. A detailed model of the power train of a Nissan Leaf was developed in PSIM software, with WBG semiconductors’ capability. The model was simulated one time using GaN semiconductors and another time using SiC devices. Simulation results are quantified and a comparison between different semiconductors in terms of total losses and efficiency is presented. The developed PSIM model can also be extended to other EVs like Chevy Volt. A proof of concept prototype for a Nissan Leaf dc/dc converter was built in the laboratory and results were collected. Componentwise experimental results are presented and their correlation with simulation findings is demonstrated. In addition, experimental results of the overall power train test bench are found to be matched with the simulation results on a system level as well.

  • Design of Bus-Side RCD Snubber Circuit for Three-Phase High-Power
           Inverters

      Abstract: To protect the transistors operating in high-power converters, the simple and low-cost RCD snubber circuits are widely used. This paper presents operation and design principles of RCD snubbers that can be effectively used in many industrial applications. The typical RCD snubbers can be classified as: 1) the switch-side snubber (if the snubbers are connected at the collector–emitter terminals of the transistor switch) and 2) the bus-side snubber (if the snubbers are connected at the dc bus). These two classes of snubbers are compared in terms of energy losses and operation under variable duty cycle theoretically. The latter snubber topology is chosen in this work as a more advantageous approach. The paper further proposes the design methodology for the bus-side snubbers. The proposed snubber methodology and its functionality are verified using the detailed simulation as well as the experimental prototype of a three-phase converter feeding 60-hp induction motor.
