  • A methodology for optimizing probabilistic wind power forecasting

    • Abstract: A methodology for optimizing probabilistic wind power forecasting
Christos Stathopoulos, George Galanis, Nikolaos S. Bartsotas, and George Kallos
      Adv. Geosci., 45, 289-294, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-289-2018, 2018
Deterministic wind power forecasts enclose an inherent uncertainty due to several sources of error. In order to counterbalance this deficiency, an analysis of the error characteristics and construction of probabilistic forecasts with associated confidence levels is necessary for the quantification of the corresponding uncertainty. This work proposes a probabilistic forecasting method using an atmospheric model, optimization techniques for addressing the temporal error dependencies and Kalman filtering for eliminating systematic errors and enhancing the symmetry-normality of the shaped error distributions. The method is applied in case studies, using real time data from four wind farms in Greece. The performance is compared against a reference method as well as other common methods showing an improvement in the predictive reliability.

  • Evolution of seaports of the Russian Far East in relation to changes in
the energy structure in Pacific Asia

    • Abstract: Evolution of seaports of the Russian Far East in relation to changes in the energy structure in Pacific Asia
      Sergey Venevsky and Elena Zaostrovskikh
      Adv. Geosci., 45, 267-272, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-267-2018, 2018
We estimated the current state of seaports Vanino and Sovetskaya Gavan, situated in the Russian Far East, as beneficiaries to themselves (at local scale), to Khabarovsk Krai (regional or provincial scale) and to the Russian Federation (inter-regional or federal scale). Further, we make projections for the near future (until the year 2030) for conditions of current export fuel supply demands in China and for conditions of climate-friendly energy restructuring in China. It is shown that the coal specialization of Vanino and Sovetskaya Gavan seaports will not be profitable in the near future (year 2030) for conditions of climate-friendly energy restructuring in China. There will be considerable economic losses at the national level if coal specialization is persistent. Thus, environmental policies regarding energy structure in a country with a large economy may sufficiently influence the development of transport, industry and urban infrastructure on an inter-regional, regional or local level for a country importing fuel resources.

  • The North Sea surge of 31 October–1 November 2006 during Storm
           Britta

    • Abstract: The North Sea surge of 31 October–1 November 2006 during Storm Britta
      Anthony James Kettle
      Adv. Geosci., 45, 273-279, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-273-2018, 2018
Storm Britta on 31 October–1 November 2006 was an important North Sea storm with a high surge along the coast of the Netherlands and Germany and a significant number of high wave reports. The paper presents an analysis of the national tide gauge records of the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark to track the storm surge around the North Sea and extract the short period component that may be linked with large coastal wave strikes.

  • Distribution of minor metallic elements within waste incineration bottom
           ashes defined by WDX/EDX spectrometry

    • Abstract: Distribution of minor metallic elements within waste incineration bottom ashes defined by WDX/EDX spectrometry
Piotr R. Kowalski, Monika Kasina, and Marek Michalik
      Adv. Geosci., 45, 259-265, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-259-2018, 2018
This study focus on minor metallic elements distribution in waste incineration bottom ashes (BAs) using chemical microanalysis methods to study the BAs resource potential. BAs contained from 8.8 wt % to 23.1 wt % of metallic elements concentrated mostly in metallic fragments and metallic inclusions (usually composed of more than one metal). Their recovery might be possible, however, due to physical properties of metallic components, advanced methods of BAs processing need to be applied.

  • Surface deformation study for a geothermal operation field

    • Abstract: Surface deformation study for a geothermal operation field
Wenli Wang, Julia Diessl, and Michael S. Bruno
      Adv. Geosci., 45, 243-249, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-243-2018, 2018
GeoMechanics Technologies has investigated the surface deformation that occurred at a geothermal field operation located in New Zealand. An integrated 3-D geological model, geomechanical model, and fluid and heat flow model were developed for this study. A calibrated geomechanical model was then applied to simulate future scenarios to predict surface subsidence and provide a guideline to optimize field development plans.

  • Investigation of the influence of earthquakes on the water level in the
geothermal reservoir of Waiwera (New Zealand)

    • Abstract: Investigation of the influence of earthquakes on the water level in the geothermal reservoir of Waiwera (New Zealand)
      Michael Kühn and Tim Schöne
      Adv. Geosci., 45, 235-241, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-235-2018, 2018
The water level of the Waiwera geothermal reservoir increased in the hours and days after the Kaikoura earthquake on 14 November 2016. We determined in a continuous time series consisting of monthly means of water level data and pumping rates starting in 1986 if events above a certain strength alter groundwater dynamics at Waiwera. A clear correlation cannot be proven but none of the recorded earthquakes led to such a high energy density in Waiwera as the Kaikoura event did.

  • The influence of gas and humidity on the mineralogy of various salt
compositions – implications for natural and technical caverns

    • Abstract: The influence of gas and humidity on the mineralogy of various salt compositions – implications for natural and technical caverns
Bettina Strauch, Martin Zimmer, Axel Zirkler, Stefan Höntzsch, and Anja M. Schleicher
      Adv. Geosci., 45, 227-233, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-227-2018, 2018
The impact of humidity and gas (CO2, N2, CH4) on saliniferous mineral compositions was studied and show dissolution-recrystallization reactions involving halite, sylvite, kieserite, carnallite and kainite. CO2 causes acidification of the aqueous phase which enhances dissolution rate and reaction kinetics. These simulations allow for the evaluation of the interachtion between and host rock and fillings along the walls of storage caverns in salt deposits.

    • Abstract: Modelling of multi-lateral well geometries for geothermal applications
Elisabeth Peters, Guido Blöcher, Saeed Salimzadeh, Paul J. P. Egberts, and Mauro Cacace
      Adv. Geosci., 45, 209-215, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-209-2018, 2018
Accuracy of well inflow modelling in different numerical simulation approaches was compared for a multi-lateral well with laterals of varying diameter. For homogeneous cases, all simulators generally were reasonably close in terms of the total well flow (deviations smaller than 4 %). The distribution of the flow over the different laterals in a well can vary significantly between simulators (> 20 %). In a heterogeneous case with a fault the deviations between the approaches were much larger.

  • Spatial assessment of the distribution and potential of bioenergy
           resources in Kazakhstan

    • Abstract: Spatial assessment of the distribution and potential of bioenergy resources in Kazakhstan
Asima Koshim, Marat Karatayev, Michèle L. Clarke, and William Nock
      Adv. Geosci., 45, 217-225, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-217-2018, 2018
In this paper, we have identified the main residues available in Kazakhstan for bioenergy production as well as their geographical distribution. The bioenergy potential is estimated about 485.36 MJ (or 16.582 Mt of coal equivalent), which account for about 30 % of total current energy consumption of the country. The northern and southern provinces of Kazakhstan have the highest bioenergy potential from wheat residues, while the dryland central provinces have the least potential.

The ever-increasing energy demand has led to overexploitation of fossil fuels deposits, while renewables offer a viable alternative. Since renewable energy resources derive from phenomena related to either atmospheric or geophysical processes, unpredictability is inherent to renewable energy systems. An innovative and simple stochastic tool, the climacogram, was chosen to explore the degree of unpredictability. By applying the climacogram across the related timeseries and spatial-series it was feasible to identify the degree of unpredictability in each process through the Hurst parameter, an index that quantifies the level of uncertainty. All examined processes display a Hurst parameter larger than 0.5, indicating increased uncertainty on the long term. This implies that only through stochastic analysis may renewable energy resources be reliably manageable and cost efficient. In this context, a pilot application of a hybrid renewable energy system in the Greek island of Astypalaia is discussed, for which we show how the uncertainty (in terms of variability) of the input hydrometeorological processes alters the uncertainty of the output energy values.

Under the present study, cement, steel, and brick manufacturing have been studied to determine their emission contribution in India. As the emissions are found to be significant, various future plausibility of the energy and emissions from the sector are assessed. It is found that energy efficiency improvements from steel and brick manufacturing processes result in emission reductions. Combined efforts on the industry could reduce emissions beyond the Paris Agreement commitment of India.

      Adv. Geosci., 45, 167-176, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-167-2018, 2018
In this paper, We tried to answer two major questions: To what extent are the laboratory results reliable' How well can the lab results represent the rock behaviour on a larger scale' we have discussed the usefulness of laboratory true triaxial experiments in duplicating the field scenarios. We have reconstructed field P-wave velocity profile from laboratory measurements and compared it with the field velocity measurements and observed a good agreement between two sources.

      Adv. Geosci., 45, 177-184, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-177-2018, 2018
The main goal of this study was to understand how different realizations of the impact of groundwater pumping activities in a major urban center would affect the results of 3-D numerical models. In detail we looked at two model scenarios which both rely on the same geological structural model but differ in the realization of the groundwater boundary conditions. The results show, that it is necessary to use groundwater wells as an active parameter to reproduce local movement patterns.

      Adv. Geosci., 45, 147-153, https://doi.org/10.5194/adgeo-45-147-2018, 2018
We use the CAMELS dataset to compare two different approaches in multi-step ahead forecasting of monthly streamflow. The first approach uses past monthly streamflow information only, while the second approach additionally uses past information about monthly precipitation and/or temperature (exogenous information). The incorporation of exogenous information is made by utilizing Prophet, a model largely implemented in Facebook. The findings suggest that the compared approaches are equally useful.
