  • Chitosan-Based Material for Cellular Tissue Engineering

      Abstract: Aqueous dispersed media and films based on edible or succinate chitosan with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were manufactured. Infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy were used to study the structural changes associated with formation of intermolecular junctions between chitosan and SWCNT. Nonlinear optical characteristics of liquid samples exposed to pulsed laser radiation of nanosecond duration were determined experimentally and calculated theoretically. The composition of the medium based on succinate chitosan and SWCNT providing the largest nonlinear absorption coefficient (902 cm/GW) was determined. The sample with this composition had lower threshold radiation intensity (2.7 MW/cm2), at which nonlinear effects are generated in the medium and liquid-to-solid transition occurs. The results obtained in this work are useful for laser-based production of three-dimensional cellular and tissue-engineered structures used in cardiovascular surgery.

  • Determination of Potassium Anomalous Rectifying Currents by Analysis of

      Abstract: This article describes the determination of potassium anomalous rectifying currents by analysis of electrical cardiac signals in reverse electrocardiography. Contemporary cardiodiagnostic systems include algorithms and methods for noninvasive investigation of the electrophysiological properties of the heart. Comparative data are presented on the determination of potassium anomalous rectifying currents by an electrophysiological method; we propose a noninvasive method for analysis of the electrical cardiac signal.

  • Prognosis of Recurrent Myocardial Infarction Based on Shortliffe Fuzzy

      Abstract: This report discusses the employment of the electrical characteristics of biologically active points (BAP) in the meridian of the heart to solve the task of prognosticating recurrence of myocardial infarctions during the rehabilitation period using fuzzy decision rules. Employment of only the electrical characteristics of informative BAP was found to provide a reliability level of greater than 0.85 in decision-making, with a significant uncertainty zone. If additional features characterizing long-term psychoemotional tension − lipid peroxidation and antioxidant activity − are included, the reliability of prognoses of recurrence of myocardial infarction during remission reaches 0.95.

      Abstract: New stabilometric measures were developed, based on assessment of the energetics of the interaction of the body (human) with the support using statokinesiograms, which have advantages over the more widely used indexes such as the length, mean rate, and area of statokinesiograms in being more informative and, thus, providing a more reliable reflection of the characteristics of posture control.

  • A Surgical Carbon Dioxide Laser with an Electromagnetic Power Control
           System

      Abstract: In this work, the possibility of controlling radiation power of a surgical carbon dioxide laser using an electromagnetic control system is considered. It is demonstrated that the electromagnetic control system makes it possible to adjust the laser radiation power within a wide range, allowing thereby the same laser system to be used for various medical purposes. Experimental results on the impact of modulated laser radiation on biological tissues are presented.

  • A Method for Detection of the Optic Disc Boundaries in Fundus Images

      Abstract: A method for detection of the optic disc boundaries in fundus images is suggested. The method is based on integration of luminance samples along the diagonals. A modification of the method based on an algorithm of luminance sample integration in a fan pattern is also suggested. To reduce the effect of blood vessels on the results of integration, images are processed in the red channel. The method suggested in this work can be used for automating the description of fundus images in ophthalmology.

  • Principles of Data Acquisition Using Positron Emission Tomography Combined
           with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PET/MRI)

      Abstract: Combined whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides high-contrast imaging of soft tissues in combination with quantitative assessment of levels of absorption of a radiopharmaceutical. New technical solutions for PET/MRI have provided a large field for scientific studies. One significant difficulty is that of overcoming the challenge of assessing correction for the attenuation (attenuation correction, AC) of positron radiation by human soft tissues using MRI data. This literature review assesses existing principles for data acquisition using combined PET/MRI.

  • Wavelet Analysis of Cardiac Electrical Activity Signals

      Abstract: To solve important problems of cardiovascular monitoring, effective algorithms for computer processing of electrocardiogram signals (ECS) should be developed on the basis of nonlinear dynamic analysis. ECS can be represented as electric excitation of the conducting nerve network of the heart (CNNH) in the form of solitons of different sizes, taking into account their polarization along the main CNNH branches. Detailed information on the electrical activity in all parts of the four-chamber heart is contained in the self-similar fractal scale-invariant CNNH structure. With the help of wavelet transform, it is possible to represent the structure of the process of excitation of CNNH segments as a system of local extrema of the wavelet diagram of ECS. The wavelet spectrum of ECS has a fractal structure in the form of self-similar waves with scaling 1/f. Each of these waves reflects the excitation of the corresponding CNNH segment. Wavelet representation of the ECS can be used as a tool for detecting various cardiovascular diseases by visualizing skeleton functions of the ECS wavelet transform.

  • A Device for Activation of Tissue Cell Proliferation by Dosed Exposure to
           Radio-Frequency Currents

      Abstract: Activation of reducing processes in biological tissues by exposure to pulse-modulated radio-frequency (RF) currents is studied. It is shown that the weak destructive effect of RF currents activates the process of proliferation of healthy cells. A prototype device for dosed exposure to pulse-modulated RF currents based on needle electrodes is described. The results of experimental animal studies and randomized clinical studies using a purpose-designed prototype device for dosed exposure to pulse-modulated RF currents are presented. The clinical efficacy of dosed RF stimulation for treatment of purulent, inflammatory, and purulent-inflammatory processes is shown to be high.

  • Estimation of Sensitivity of Nonlinear Methods for Heart Rate Variability

      Abstract: Modern mathematical methods for analysis of heart rate variability (HRV), such as rescaled range analysis, detrended fluctuation analysis, and phase-rectified signal averaging were considered. Algorithms for calculating novel nonlinear HRV indices were described in detail. Mathematical models for simulating artificial cardiac Beat-to-beat intervals that take into account various noise processes were created. A state model of the cardiovascular system based on HRV analysis was developed. The sensitivity of HRV indices to changes in the state of the cardiovascular system was theoretically estimated using artificially simulated data.

      Abstract: Specific design features and main characteristics of a compact accelerator-based epithermal neutron source for boron neutron capture therapy are described. High quality of the neutron flux generated by the accelerator-based source has been experimentally confirmed. The opportunities for medical use of the accelerator-based epithermal neutron source in oncological centers for boron neutron capture therapy are assessed.

      Abstract: A natural relationship between the probabilistic and fuzzy set approaches to the intelligent analysis of the level of risk of drug dependence was demonstrated using results of psychological testing of students. A method of forming a Bayesian model of linguistic variables characterizing the initial signs of the predisposition to drugs is presented. Steps of fuzzy logical inference of the aggregate informative classifier for ranking and classifying subjects’ psychoemotional status are considered within the framework of hierarchy analysis and principal components analysis.

  • Multiple Inter-Channel EEG Relationships and Their Application

      Abstract: In this article we propose an algorithm for the analysis of multiple relationships between electroencephalogram (EEG) channels. This algorithm identifies groups of linked channels and estimates the strength of relationships within these groups. This is a novel approach that can detect informative cortical zones for particular psychoneurological diseases. It can also be used to create new systems for processing EEG data and diagnose diseases.

      Abstract: A method using modeling on a human head phantom to evaluate the total targeting error of a stereotactic instrument to deep targets in patient’s brain is presented. The means of targeting the instrument to intracerebral aiming points was a Medtronic StealthStation S7 frameless navigation system combined with a Philips Achieva 3 T MRI scanner and a Philips Gemini TF PET/CT scanner.

  • A Two-Stage Algorithm for Detection of Atrial Fibrillation

      Abstract: One of the most common and dangerous types of cardiac arrhythmia is atrial fibrillation. Timely diagnosis of this disease is one of the most important tasks of human health monitoring systems. There are many algorithms for detection of atrial fibrillation, but their accuracy does not exceed 94.5%. In this study, a two-stage method for detection of atrial fibrillation is presented. It is characterized by a high level of specificity, which reduces the probability of overdiagnosis.

  • An Analytical Model for Dosimetry of Nonstandard Photon Beams with Small,
           Round Cross Sections

      Abstract: An analytical model of the dose kernel of a narrow photon beam (pencil beam) with a bremsstrahlung spectrum with maximal energy at 6 MeV was created, allowing determination of the primary and scattered components of the absorbed dose to be determined in a water phantom with error levels acceptable in practice. A simple method for the dosimetry of photon beams with small round cross sections with 6-MV bremsstrahlung spectra using this model is proposed, combining absolute measurement of the dose absorbed in the water at a reference point in the machine-specific reference geometry and calculation of the deep dose distribution using simple analytical equations for round beams with cross sections of any radius.
