Abstract: The subjects areas of Cellular Biology and Histology, which underpin the microscopic field of Morphology and are included in the first years of the curriculum in a Medical course, are the pillars of medical education  and for the clinical reasoning of future professionals. This study aimed to trace a teaching profile of Cellular Biology and Histology in the Medical courses which had participants in the selection process to fill vacancies by transfer, for the undergraduate course in the Medical School of São José do Rio Preto (FAMERP)  in 2017. This was a quantitative and qualitative cross-sectional study and 132 academics participated. The results showed that, in most Higher Education Institutions, these disciplines are taught theoretically and practically. In the comparison between the theoretical performance of the students of traditional and active teaching-learning methodology, a higher number of hits in Histology and a better final grade were observed in the traditional. The deficiency pointed out by the students was a lack of laboratory sessions with viewing histological glass slides with light microscopes. Also, the aspect of teachers’ pedagogical practice and dynamic classes was shown to be fundamental to the students' interest, as well as to better satisfaction’s index in learning these areas. Furthermore, integrating these disciplines with the clinical practice of Medicine has proved to be relevant for academics, who feel more instigated to knowledge. In the present study, it was detected a better use in relation to the Histology by the students of the courses of traditional methodology, compared to those of active methodology and in this way the analysis done can to collaborate for the enrichment and reaffirmation of the fruits of the comparison of teaching-learning methodologies.

  • Leadership behavior among professors

    • Authors: Luiz Fernando Quintanilha
      Pages: 30 - 35
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Leadership is an established well concept in administration area, but it has been introduced more deeply in education. Leadership actions are increasingly required in educational spaces in order to lead them to institutional goals. However, some factors keep educators away from these theoretical concepts such as varied demands, lack of time and financial and professional incentives. Moreover, there may be a decreased of effectiveness in their behaviors and a developmental impairment of the education institution. OBJECTIVE: This study's aim was to investigate which leadership behaviors are most performed by professors. METHODS: It was carried out a cross-sectional study of 20 professors from public and private institutions. A structured questionnaire "Leadership Skills and Behaviors Inventory" was applied through Google Forms application, including 27 statements reporting positive leadership behaviors and using Likert Scale from 1 to 5 for each answer. RESULTS: The most agreed and performed behaviors of interviewed professors were “shows enthusiasm and liking to their work” and “values the team's work and its ideas for improvement”. The least accomplished were “feel comfortable in face of unexpected events and difficult situations” and “take responsibility for all participants' work in their educational space”. CONCLUSION: Educators have points to be improved in relation to their leadership behaviors. Furthermore encouraging these professionals training becomes important to improve national education.

      Pages: 36 - 44
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Health planning can be understood as a device for systematizing actions and facilitating the elaboration of work processes, as well as for the training of health professionals engaged in the organization of the Unified Health System. OBJECTIVE: To discuss the involvement of several social actors in the collective construction of Situational Strategic Planning in a curricular component of health graduation courses and to highlight potential benefits of this process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The students had theoretical basis about the Unified Health System, Health Promotion, Epidemiology, Health Planning and Popular Education during the three semesters of the above mentioned curricular component. In the second semester, a situational diagnosis was made of a group of elderly people of USF. Based on this diagnosis, in the third semester, along with the USF team, teachers and the elderly from the group, Situational Strategic Planning (PES), according to Carlos Matus, of community interventions based on Popular Health Education was carried out. RESULTS: The PES, with the participation of all the actors, made possible the horizontality of the relations during the process, from the planning to the execution of the activities. Five community interventions were carried out with the elderly, with subsequent evaluation and monitoring. CONCLUSION: The results point to the potential role of this integrative practice and the importance of experiencing SUS since the beginning of the academic course.

  • “TO BE A TEACHER”: who am I and why'

    • Authors: Iêda Aleluia, Lígia Vilas Boas, Sandra Brasil, Sérgio Zaidhaft
      Pages: 53 - 60
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: To be a health professional and, simultaneously, a teacher, encompass distinct knowledge areas and, also distinct professional identities, acting towards formation and shaping the profile of a future health professional. Reconciling these aims becomes then an essential question. OBJECTIVES: To have a better understanding of the day-to-day professional role and to make an analytical link with the international literature in the area.  METHODOLOGY: A four hours’ workshop aimed to professionals involved in the medicine course, despite not all of them being medicine doctors. It was then formally asked the participants about their personal motivation for teaching, and also about experienced difficulties and adopted strategies to overcome them. RESULTS: 21 teachers participated. The detected work motivations were: 1: Personal identification; 2: A sense of renovation. Despite this, difficulties could be identified: 1: How to adequately balance professional and personal life; 2: Difficulties related to generational characteristics and 3: Personal monetary rewarding. In what refers to adopted strategies, it was possible to identify: 1: A better use of available work time; 2: Personal revival; 3: Sense of humour; 4: Learning processes of new technologies and 4: Sharing process in trying for problems solution. DISCUSSION: It was established a space for reflection and thinking on the meaning of being a health professional and academic. It were considered, among other questions, the relationship between teaching activities and the continuous transformation inherent to the teaching process. As a result, this lead to a different way of looking and attitudes in what refers to the health professional and also teaching. CONCLUSIONS: The present experience has shown how fundamental is to create opportunities for reflection about the teaching role and its identity constructed on the day-to-day work and also the institutional commitment in promoting such attitudes.

  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination’s adaptation for final
evaluation of the curricular component “Semiological Bases”

    • Authors: Fernando Muti Carvalho, Marta Silva Menezes, Iêda Maria Barbosa Aleluia, Humberto Castro Lima Filho, Ana Veronica Mascarenhas Batista, Tulio Ribeiro dos Santos
      Pages: 61 - 63
Abstract: BACKGROUND: The combination of both physiological knowledge of a variety of sistems and the clinical findings it is of extreme relevance to the medical student learning process. The proposal of a simulated enviroment, with clinical data collection and regular physical examination, is crucial to this process. The Semiological bases of Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública module, used by the OSCE’s 4th semester medical students, capacitate them for such means. SUMMARY OF WORK: The evaluation logistic was divided into two segments: the first one was made through a theorical exam with close questioning, exhibiting images and videos, but also containing an open-ended question requesting a construction of a fictional clinical case; in the second one it was applied a practical exam segmented by different fields of medical knowledge (neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory/abdomen), with the evaluation of 120 students and followed by the teacher’s feedbacks at the conclusion of each field exam. SUMMARY OF RESULTS: The experience was important, however, it is notable the need for a complex management and understanding of the evaluational process. Discussion between students and teachers happened in behalf of the development of such proposal. CONCLUSIONS: The application of theorical exams throughout the semester combined with a practical exam (the OSCE) at the conclusion of the curricular component Bases Semiológicas had significant weight to the whole process.

  • Benefits of the flipped classroom in pre-clinical period: a systematic
           review

    • Authors: Ticiane Rodrigues Figueiredo, Iêda Maria Barbosa Aleluia
      Pages: 68 - 77
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Flipped Classroom (FC) is an active teaching methodology in which the lower levels of Bloom's taxonomy are realized at home: watching videos made available by teachers or studying through the teaching material offered, while the classroom is reserved to work the levels of taxonomy through discussions. OBJECTIVE: Identify the benefits of the HR method compared to traditional education in the pre-clinical years of medical graduation. METHODS: Systematic review through electronic database search in the period defined between 12/31/1999 and 6/25/2017. RESULTS: A total of 262 articles were found, of which 04 fully satisfy the inclusion and exclusion criteria previously established. The academic performance measured through applied tests was superior in the FC method in two studies. One study demonstrated that students performed better on analysis-type questions, according to Bloom's taxonomy. In the FC method the students had contact with more sources of study. In addition, the studies that brought qualitative evaluation of the students about the methodology obtained opinions favorable to its application. CONCLUSION: The FC method was advantageous in motivating students. The results suggest that this method promotes greater content retention. The FC methodology becomes superior to traditional teaching in the analysis-type questions, according to Bloom’s taxonomy, indicating the possibility that this method is better to address higher levels of complexity in the teaching-learning process. Data related to students' academic performance in each method are still inconclusive.

  • Indicators of suicide ideation among medical students: a systematic review

    • Authors: Victor Meireles Campos, Ieda Aleluia
      Pages: 78 - 91
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation is one of the main symptoms indicative of suicide attempts and suicide. According to the WHO, about 800,000 cases of suicide were reported around the world in 2014, which translates to an index of 1 suicide every 40 seconds. Medical students constitute a population at risk for the development of suicidal ideation. Several life factors may influence the risk of suicidal ideation, those being personality traits, social factors and mental health. OBJECTIVE: Identify the indicators of suicidal ideation among medical students during their academic training. METHODS: This is a systematic review carried out in the electronic databases Pubmed and BVS. Articles that addressed the subject of suicidal ideation among medical students in Portuguese, English and Spanish from 2008 to 2018 were included. RESULTS: We found 263 articles, of which 12 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After the application of the STROBE statement, 6 articles were selected for the creation of this systematic review. The prevalence of suicidal ideation varied from 3.7% to 35.6% around the world and several factors were linked to the increase of suicidal ideation risk. CONCLUSION: A suicidal ideation is a frequent and multifactorial phenomenon that involves several realms of a medical student's life. The risk factors identified in this review were linked to the increased risk of suicidal ideation development.
