  • Pursuing change in fiction series: Virtual reality as a narrative strategy
at the service of the viewer’s immersion

    • Authors: Adriana Paíno Ambrosio, M.ª Isabel Rodríguez Fidalgo
      Pages: 1 - 14
Abstract: Technological advances have changed the way that people create and consume entertainment products with new formulas that mix traditional and digital media. Television series are exploring forms that allow viewers to participate in the stories and create new experiences that end up converting them into co-creators of the content. Virtual reality (VR) is a new tool that will meet the demands of new generations of digital natives so that they can engage in a more active interaction with their favorite entertainment products. The viewer is not only going to be an essential part of the fictional universe, but will also be able to witness the recounted events in first person. This article aims to analyze six current examples of TV series where VR has been used to expand the narrative universe: Invisible (Samsung, JAUNT, CNÉ and 30 Ninjas), Halcyon (Syfy), Game of Thrones (HBO), Sleepy Hollow (FOX), The Simpsons (FOX) and El Ministerio del Tiempo (RTVE). The study intends to determine the function of the contents created in VR within the base narrative (episodes of the series) using a qualitative analysis methodology. This methodology will allow us to distinguish the main innovations introduced by this technology in connection with the viewer-users’ narration and consumption.

  • Recent history of Chile in three television fiction works: An audiovisual
           and thematic analysis

    • Authors: Javier Mateos-Pérez, Gloria Ochoa, Andrea Valdivia
      Pages: 15 - 28
Abstract: In the last ten years, a significant change in Chilean television has taken place as a result of the production and broadcasting of national fiction series. Los 80, Los archivos del Cardenal, and El reemplazante are audiovisual productions which highlight this phenomenon. These series, through which we are able to learn about part of the history of Chile in the last forty years, stand out due to their artistic quality, high ratings, and the social debate that has arisen around them. This article analyzes three series from an audiovisual and content perspective. These works of fiction provide a snapshot of a historical period through three different themes: life during the dictatorship, the violation of human rights, and social inequality as revealed in the current educational crisis. The results show how these series go beyond entertainment and propose in their plots complex and controversial themes for Chilean society. The audiovisual proposal is constructed in such a way as to seek the verisimilitude of the story through the staging, the use of archival images, and the capturing of direct sound, among other formal resources.

  • Dead Lesbian Syndrome: LGBTQ fandom’s self-regulation mechanisms in
           fan-producer controversies around “The 100”

    • Authors: Mar Guerrero-Pico, Maria-José Establés, Rafael Ventura
      Pages: 29 - 46
Abstract: This article explores the mechanisms of fans self-regulation in conflict situations with the showrunners. Conflict situations are encouraged by the unfair treatment that LGBTQ characters receive in TV series, including the so-called Dead Lesbian Syndrome: a narrative cliché that implies a tragic ending for the LGBTQ female characters. In our study, which is methodologically based on reception studies and discourse analysis, we analyse the boycott campaign organized by lesbian and bisexual fans of The 100 (The CW, 2014-) after the death, in the third season, of a charismatic lesbian character: Commander Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey). The results show that fans use the fear of industry reprisals, strategic thinking and the positive portrayal of LGBTQ characters as argumentative strategies designed to contain the action of toxic fans that harass showrunners in social networks, and to protect the social labor of fan activism.

  • Interactive documentaries as a format in audiovisual media: A case study
           of RTVE and Al Jazeera

    • Authors: Jorge Vázquez-Herrero, Xosé López-García
      Pages: 47 - 61
Abstract: The main objective of this article is to examine new interactive non-fiction narratives in audiovisual media. In the current context marked by convergence, a hybridization of forms and languages is taking place within the news environment. Online media show a singular characterization, and the limits between press, radio and television are increasingly blurred. In the digital strategy of televisions as online media, innovation and the search for added value have led to the confluence of journalism and transmedia narratives, as well as to the development of new formats, among them interactive documentaries. The study was conducted in two stages. The first consists of an exploratory-descriptive stage, where interactive documentaries produced by online media in 2016 are related and classified, thus obtaining a panoramic vision of this genre in the last year. Secondly, a comparative case study is presented between Párkinson, que tiemble el camino (RTVE, 2016) and Hacked (Al Jazeera, 2016), both of which are audiovisual media projects. The analysis of these two projects focuses on the docugame, which provides novelties for the user, the content and media through ludification, simulation and greater user engagement.

  • Wikipedia access and contribution: Language choice in multilingual
           communities . A case study

    • Authors: Joan Soler-Adillon, Pere Freixa
      Pages: 63 - 80
Abstract: This paper presents a study on language use in both accessing and contributing to Wikipedia in a context were users were expected to be able to read and write in at least three languages (Catalan, Spanish and English). Seventy-seven first-year audiovisual communication students made contributions to Wikipedia as part of the assessed work in the firstyear course titled “Digital Culture.” Before and after writing Wikipedia articles, the students responded to two questionnaires that enquired about their language-related habits when using the site and about their language choice for contributing to it. The results show how some interesting facts and patterns appear between the languages known and used in editing. Students favor the English edition of Wikipedia when consulting it despite the fact that this is the language they assess themselves as being less proficient at in reading. More generally, our research shows that multilingual Wikipedia users move seamlessly from one language edition to another, thus refuting the cliché that relates minority languages with exclusively local and self-referential topics. In relation to this, it brings to light some correlations between the students’ identification with either one or two main languages, and how this influenced both their choice of language in editing Wikipedia articles and the specific topics they decided to write about. Additionally, the study also offers relevant insight on what drives students to engage with such a task up to the point of making extra contributions to make sure their contributions might reach a larger audience.

  • Transmedia narratives with young university students: Digital ethnography
           in the hyperconnected society

    • Authors: José Miguel Gutiérrez Pequeño, Eduardo Fernández Rodríguez, Laura de la Iglesia Atienza
      Pages: 81 - 95
Abstract: This paper analyzes the design, creation and diffusion of transmedia content based on the production of young university students enrolled in the Bachelor’s Degree in Social Education. Following a brief introduction on the role of transmedia literacy and the culture of convergence within formal education institutions in general, the relationships between the use of transmedia narratives and educational innovation in higher education institutions are discussed. The study analyzes the transmedia creation process at two levels of analysis: 1) through a description of the instruments of mediation of learning used in the educational design (guided participation); and 2) by analyzing the possibilities of transmedia narratives as strategies of collective creation to promote digital literacy in the hyperconnected society. The methodological design combines narrative research with digital ethnography, followed by the description of the main results derived from the analysis of the elaboration and production of the transmedia content by the students. Finally, the conclusions defend the opportunity of transmedia education to generate processes of technological and social mediation that not only recognize the learning and tacit knowledge that students form in the hyperconnected society but also its possibilities for social empowerment among university students.

  • Analysis of the new communicative strategy of EH Bildu (2016): Towards a
           narrative of emotion

    • Authors: Julen Orbegozo Terradillos, Andoni Iturbe Tolosa, Marian González Abrisketa
      Pages: 97 - 114
Abstract: This article analyses the strategic change in the EH Bildu electoral campaigns from 2011 through to the regional elections of September 2016. Through interviews with those in charge of the campaigns, the analysis of their accounts of the events and participant observation, certain milestones that have led to the renewal of their electoral narrative after the coalition itself acknowledged the end of its political narrative are identified. The investigation finds that the coalition of parties decided to follow current political marketing and communication trends in order to widen its electorate. In this new narrative, its communicative strategy changed from an emphasis on the collective and the ideological content of its discourse to the humanising and personalising of the discourse and of the candidates themselves.

  • New listening in the net' University students’ music consumption
           and browsing habits

    • Authors: Daniel Torras i Segura
      Pages: 115 - 130
Abstract: This study describes the general trends in music content consumption habits in web browsing from the perspective of university students as a generation immersed in Internet culture. Using descriptive statistics, it is shown what devices or sources they use to listen to music while browsing, what style of music or sound content they listen to, if activities are performed simultaneously, and what forms of listening this digital generation uses in the Internet environment. The most important conclusions are that the technological features of Internet do not influence the chosen style of music as the most popular genres still prevail, but instead determine how to listen and from which channel or technology. At the same time, a young multitasking consumer who uses music as an accompaniment at all times, even off the Internet, is emerging; and simultaneously a hyperpersonalized ‘sonosphere’ or vital soundtrack tailored to each user can be distinguished. This initial picture, hitherto unknown in the approach to music consumption, can contribute to further research that links social networks and digital resources to the kind of listening, the valuation of Internet and its music that young people make from the perspective of audiovisual enunciation, and what implicit values this new generation assumes in online music.
