  • University media in Ecuador: Interviews with institutional managers on the
leap from theory to journalistic practice

    • Authors: Juan Pablo Trámpuz, Daniel Barredo Ibáñez, María Bella Palomo
      Pages: 7 - 24
Abstract: This study examines experiences using the Ecuadorian university media as training scenarios to allow students to gain experience in real spaces of journalistic practice, but within the educational sphere. For this purpose, a qualitative approach based on structured interviews with managers of twenty-four university media in this Latin American country was used. The responses were processed with the help of Atlas.ti software. The results highlight the high value of these learning scenarios when they constitute, in general terms, the first media space where future journalists are able to implement knowledge theoretically assimilated in the classroom. In addition, they are spaces in which students can participate actively, complement the activities of related subjects, and undergo pre-professional practical training on a voluntary basis. Despite this, certain divergences are found in relation to the complexity of learning by doing journalism and the students’ academic achievement. Similarly, we identify some common routines in these spaces, such as the filtering of students’ work or the trial and error method as the basis for reflection on journalistic practice.

  • Social and political engagement of university students in the digital
sphere: Social network uses for citizen participation

    • Authors: Beatriz Catalina-García, Antonio García-Jiménez, Juan Menor Sendra
      Pages: 25 - 41
Abstract: This research, which focuses on some aspects that link the digital life of university students and their civic, political and social involvement, aims to determine the level of engagement of young people in association-related actions or institutions through digital networks. Additionally, this paper attempts to specify the relationship between the level of social/political participation of this sector of the population and the interest of its members in the social media profiles of civically engaged subjects or organizations. It also looks at differences in access and interactivity in profiles with social and/or participatory interest between young people with some degree of civic commitment and those who are not involved any associations. While the data obtained through a convenience sample support, once again, youth disaffection towards institutionalized politics, the high intensity of digital access among all young people is confirmed, which a priori increases the possibilities of making civil society stronger. However, the intensive use of social networks by young people is not positively associated with a greater degree of civic involvement. Finally, it is observed that young people prefer to consume content rather than to produce it.

  • Millennials and the Internet: How Ibero-American students of communication
           use and value social media

    • Authors: Santiago Tejedor, Ricardo Carniel Bugs, Santiago Giraldo Luque
      Pages: 43 - 63
Abstract: The use of technologies by the millennial generation has become the subject of analysis of numerous studies. This article presents the results of research carried out in 16 Ibero-American countries with 1,080 university students of communication who reflected on the importance and use they make of social media in their social relations and in their informative and communicative processes. Based on 32,400 data items, the study identifies an international trend in the information habits of students in social media and cyber media websites. In addition, the article warns about a terminological confusion in the students’ notion of decisive concepts related to social networks and the new digital communicative scenario.

  • Romance in the femslash. A narrative analysis of fan fiction: “Una vez
           más, una oportunidad más”

    • Authors: Maria Isabel Villa-Montoya, Diego Montoya-Bermudez, Johanna Escobar
      Pages: 65 - 79
Abstract: This article analyzes to what extent femslash, a story created by fans that deals primarily with lesbian narratives, breaks with the classic canons of the construction of romance in fiction and proposes alternatives to overcome social stigmas around gender distinction. Through character analysis, the research identifies some of the main features of fictional structures for entertainment resulting from fan fiction. The research shows that the stories created by followers of serial audiovisual products clearly express some of the most relevant characteristics of the transformations not only of entertainment, but also of society and its heteronormative systems. This work provides valuable information on an unexplored subject and examines a concrete case study to demonstrate how the Internet can create spaces of creative resistance for minorities.

  • Press coverage of the Barcelona and Cambrils attacks in “Eldiario.es”:
Analysis of informative treatment of Islam

    • Authors: Tamer Al Najjar Trujillo, Alex Iván Arévalo Salinas
      Pages: 81 - 96
Abstract: As builders of collective imaginaries, the mainstream media have, for years, disseminated a distorted view of Islam through the use of a negative terminology and approach. Was this trend repeated in the case of Eldiario.es during the coverage of the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils in 2017' To answer this question, a content analysis is carried out of eight news items that alluded directly or indirectly to Islam published within the 48-hour timeframe following the attacks. The associated topics are analyzed and two aspects are confirmed: the active denunciation of structural violence and the terminology used. As a result, it is verified that at the thematic level Eldiario.es was interested in covering the Muslim believers’ condemnation of the attacks. However, the use of terminology continues to reproduce certain errors of the traditional press. In addition, there is no contextual framework that explores the root causes of the Islamophobic acts that took place after the attacks.

  • Bibliometric analysis of scientific production in the field of public
relations through doctoral dissertations (2006–2017) and Spanish
           doctoral programs (2017)

    • Authors: Joan Cuenca-Fontbona, Kathy Matilla, Marc Compte-Pujol
      Pages: 97 - 117
Abstract: This article analyses the production of doctoral dissertations on public relations read at Spanish universities (2006–2017). The aim is to compare our findings to those of a similar study on the period 1965–2005 carried out by Castillo and Xifra in 2006 and also to correlate this production with doctoral programs specialized in public relations offered by Spanish universities during the same period. The methodology used is bibliometric analysis. On the one hand, it has been observed that the fields and research topics of most of the dissertations analyzed examine the professional practice of public relations and its instrumental dimension, similar to the results presented in the previous research. On the other hand, the fact that the Spanish higher education system offered only two doctoral programs with the term “public relations” in the name of the title in the 2017–2018 academic year and an additional one that included a public relations research line determines the proliferation of this discipline’s scientific production.
