  • The Pedagogical Implications of Orality on Refugee ESL Students

      Abstract: Many refugee students come from traditionally oral cultures, where reading and writing have little or no impact. This situation is not simply illiteracy; scholars instead call it “orality.” Orality is widespread, as even countries that report widespread literacy often have populations that function mostly orally. Scholars claim that literacy transforms human thinking and consciousness, and that people who are illiterate think and learn in ways that often sharply contrast with literate ways. This paper summarizes research on orality, posits some of its implications for pedagogy, and presents the challenges and assets of orality in the ESL classroom.

  • Fostering an Environment for ESL Student Success in College and University
           Writing

      Abstract: Student success and retention remain key factors for colleges and universities, with faculty and staff working with students to help them overcome barriers as they complete their programs of study. Although students bring with them different and individual challenges, for those students who are entering colleges with English as a second language, they have an added challenge of learning the cultural, linguistic, and syntactical differences of writing in higher education. One way to help these students is raising faculty awareness of the specific challenges that students face when writing in a second language. This article seeks to increase awareness of these differences and help faculty provide students with a place to discuss the writing differences among their cultures and foster opportunities for students to succeed in their writing assignments—specifically, through the inclusion of pre-writing activities, explicit organizational instructions, specific feedback along with chances for revision, and engagement with students’ past and present experiences in writing.

  • The Development of L2 Reading Skills: A Case Study from an Eight-Week
           Intensive English Program Course

      Abstract: The present study explores the development of L2 reading skills over the course of an immersive eight-week session in an intensive English program. Data was collected from an intermediate- level reading skills class (N=16) at multiple points throughout the course to measure growth in vocabulary knowledge, lexical inferencing abilities, reading speed, reading comprehension, and attitudes towards reading. Subjects also submitted a weekly log of minutes read at home. During the short two-month period, significant growth was observed in a number of reading skills. Moreover, total number of minutes read independently by each student was associated with growth across several reading skills, as tested by Pearson correlations. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for language teaching and language program curriculum.

  • School Counselors and English Learners: Conceptualizations of Beneficial
           Knowledge and Skills While Facilitating Individual Student Planning

      Abstract: This article reports results from a qualitative case study representing four high school counseling programs in a large urban district in the southeastern U.S. Through the study’s findings, the article aims to inform the field of school counseling, specifically by describing focused best practices while working with English learners (ELs) during the processes involved in initial high school planning sessions. Emphasis is given to school counselors’ synthesis of students’ academic language development needs, as well as practical applications for considering the contextual complexities of schooling in the U.S. The article highlights results points to essential considerations regarding how to best support English learners’ socio-cultural and academic language development within the school counseling programs. Details regarding the participants’ conceptualizations of additional beneficial knowledge and skills, while working with ELs who have very recently arrived to high school for the first time in the U.S., are also discussed. Finally, the article provides recommendations for new areas of consideration to support school counselors’ practices through focused professional development. Likewise, these recommendations support actual programmatic needs while also aligning with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model.

  • Power Swings: From Authoritarian to Collaborative Teaching Assessments

      Abstract: This article, aimed at both the observer and the observed, presents the need for compassionate collaborative assessment strategies. By building rapport between teachers and observers, assessments are viewed positively and genuine changes in teaching can occur. Compassionate observations also help teachers to meet standards while inspiring them to excel in their profession. As the approach discussed in this article involves the assessor and the assessed, K-12 teachers, ESL instructors in IEPs, and administrator/assessors working with ESL teachers will benefit from reading this article. Part One offers a theoretical framework by examining the philosophical issues of vision and ethics as foundations for establishing an inspirational environment that enhances expertise and collaboration between supervisors, teachers, and their peers. Part Two describes ways in which expertise and collaboration can be nurtured among educators. Part Three explains how vision, ethics, expertise, and collaboration apply holistically to collaborative teacher assessment. We offer an assessment example to highlight our method.

  • Spotlight Article: Cultivating Culturally Relevant Classrooms

      Abstract: We explain how a short-term cultural immersion experience in Mexico helped prepare pre-service teachers to better gauge and empathize with the needs of English language learners. We outline our pedagogical goals and the activities they organized prior to departure, such as inviting the Consulate General of Mexico in Raleigh, N.C., to present an overview of the social, economic, and political ties between Mexico and the U.S. The article covers our full agenda in Mexico, including highlights such as the students’ first-hand experience teaching English in local elementary schools.
