  • Entendez mon cri. Dimension universelle de l’immolation

    • Authors: Jędrzej Pawlicki
      Pages: 22 - 26
Abstract: One of the most common images of the Tunisian revolution is the photograph of President Ben Ali in the hospital next to Mohamed Bouazizi’s bed on 28th December 2010. It evokes the strength of a man about to die whose death will upset the country. The dramatic gesture of Mohamed Bouazizi helped the Tunisian society to regain public space. Reclaiming the voice is crucial for the Tunisian revolutionary dynamic. The cry of Bouazizi seems to be heard. That is why we can put into perspective the death of Mohamed Bouazizi with the immolation of Ryszard Siwiec in 1968 who had protested against the Soviet intervention in Czechoslovakia. Hear my cry is the title of the documentary that chronicles the last days of Ryszard Siwiec. The comparative study devoted to these heroes allows us to see the importance of the body and of her sacrifice in resistance to authoritarian systems.

  • Le printemps des arabes oder Der arabische Frühling aus der Sicht
           französischer Comicmacher

    • Authors: Marina Ortrud M. Hertrampf
      Pages: 27 - 41
Abstract: The aim of the present essay is to examine Jean-Pierre Filiu’s und Cyrille Pomès’ Le printemps des arabes as an example of the trendy comic genre known as documentary graphic novel and to discuss how the Arab Spring is represented. My analysis shows that the authors succeed in presenting a differentiated picture of the events that underlines the diversity and complexity of the protests and riots in the individual countries of the MENA region. The authors are particularly concerned to recognize the merits of all those citizens who engaged in struggling against oppression and injustice. Apart from this homage to the (mostly nameless) heroes for freedom, the docufictional work aims to break the widely held stereotypes about the Arab world. The authors want to inform and instruct the reader but they do so without any schoolmasterly didacticism. By choosing a polylogical and polyphonic narrating technique, they allow the recipient to get a feel for the powerful and sometimes rather chaotic dynamics of the revolutionary mass movements. Despite an often decidedly ironic tone, Le printemps des arabes is free from categorical damnation and stimulates the reader to make his own opinion.

  • Der Arabische Frühling im algerischen Blick. Aus den Erfahrungen des
algerischen Bürgerkriegs lernen. Literarisches Schaffen und
intellektuelles Engagement bei Boualem Sansal und Maїssa Bey

    • Authors: Jessica Wilzek
      Pages: 42 - 60
Abstract: The article chooses an unusual perspective on the Arab Spring by analyzing Algerian literature. Unlike its neighbouring countries, Algeria was not largely effected by the revolutionary changes in 2011. However, the country has a revolutionary past: it had its own “Algerian spring” in 1988, followed by a civil war in the 1990’s. This time gap allowed literature to reflect upon the consequences of such massive political and social changes. The article analyses two different literary approaches of this period of Algerian history – a novel and an essay – from well-known Algerian writers, Maїssa Bey and Boualem Sansal, with the intention to shed light upon the current developments within the region. The consequences of the Algerian civil war have been a social and political taboo for a long time. To include the topic in political or academic discussions, intellectuals recognized and emphasized the importance of literary works. In this context the article points out two literary functions: literature as a medium for cultural and collective memories and the literary potential to extend past the national and cultural boundaries in order to develop timeless and transcultural significance.

  • Le Degré zéro de l’émotion dans Par le feu de
           Tahar Ben Jelloun

    • Authors: Jamal El Qasri
      Pages: 61 - 68
Abstract: In this article that recalls Roland Barthes’s classical work Le Degré zéro de l’écriture, I focus on the writing of Tahar Ben Jelloun’s short story Par le feu. One might consider his writing as “white”, since it seems disembodied, disenchanted, and little descriptive, where the feeling is dismissed in favour of an almost flat approach to the real. This may challenge readers not only on the various levels of the short story (narration, construction of the characters, and setting) but also on the level of the Jellounean “phrasing”, which apparently (and unlike what is found in other Ben Jelloun’s short stories, such as Cette aveuglante absence de lumière 2001) demonstrates a refusal of the literary style. I will answer the question if this is the result of Ben Jelloun’s wry look or merely an effect of a lack of inspiration.

  • Témoin actif und traducteur de l’invisible. Tahar Ben Jellouns Konzept
der literarischen Intervention im ‚Arabischen Frühling‘

    • Authors: Sara Izzo
      Pages: 69 - 83
Abstract: The present article explains the concept of literary intervention of the Moroccan author Tahar Ben Jelloun developed during the Arabic spring. According to his conception of literary engagement the author’s main functions consist on the one hand in translating an invisible and unspoken truth and on the other hand in bearing witness. The analysis of his short fictional account Par le feu (By Fire) paying tribute to Mohamed Bouazizi focuses on these two principles that explain the amalgamation of a fictional and an analytical style. It is especially the function of the translator of the invisible that associates his aesthetical approach with a typical Arabic narrative going beyond the traditional occidental form of literary engagement.

    • Authors: Mahdia Benguesmia
      Pages: 84 - 102
Abstract: This article analysis the relation between the two first revolutions of the Arabic spring and poetry by looking at three poems: Plan vertical sur la Place Tahrir by the Egiptian poet Hicham El Jokh, February 11, 2011 by the American writer Sanford Fraser and Jasmin et Papyrus by the French author Jean-Marc Buttin.
