  • Argentina neoliberal. Una protesta cantada

    • Authors: Dardo Scavino
      Pages: 19 - 38
Abstract: During the last military dictatorship in Argentina, a neoliberal narrative emerged that resulted in the electoral triumph Carlos Menem in 1989. This narrative prevailed in the country until the mass protest against the government in 2001. In this article, I analyse the neoliberal narrative in Argentina that governed the general opinion until many of the protests against the economic and social consequences of neoliberal policies adopted the narrative itself.

  • Recordar, olvidar: violencia y silencio en la ficción
           contemporánea

    • Authors: Ana María Amar Sánchez
      Pages: 39 - 54
Abstract: This article analyzes the connection between violence and silence in two recent Argentinian novels that closely explore the politics of memory: Una misma noche by Leopoldo Brizuela (2012) and Una muchacha muy bella by Julián López (2013). Recent narratives connected to trauma tend to employ new strategies to account for the relationships between violence and silence. What is the nexus between violence, politics, and memory in these stories' How do these narratives propose the permanence of memory as a means to protect against forgetting' How does violence manifest itself through language' Are there substantial differences between texts from the present and the past' Silence is an extreme way of using violence to stifle and close off memory. This essay focuses on modes of representing silence in both its thematic and its narrative aspects, as well as procedures for recounting it.

  • Entre el escepticismo y la autenticidad. Dimensiones afectivas y
políticas de la ironía en Historia del llanto de Alan Pauls

    • Authors: Brigitte Adriaensen
      Pages: 55 - 67
Abstract: The present paper discusses the position of irony in the “subjective turn”. Irony has been discredited from the 90s onwards as an apolitical figure of speech, which is incompatible with the traumatic afterlife of events such as 9/11. In Latin America, irony’s position was questioned in the context of political militancy and testimony, but nowadays critics start reevaluating its critical strength. This paper first sketches the general debate on irony, then focuses on its role in postdictatorial Argentine literature of the first and second generation. It then ends with an analysis of Historia del llanto by Alan Pauls. Parting from Zupančič’s theory on comedy, it argues for a reading of the novel with both political militancy and authentic affectivity at the center of irony’s edge.

  • Ricardo Piglia, la máquina de invención política y la
           civilibarbarie

    • Authors: Elsa Drucaroff
      Pages: 68 - 87
Abstract: The antinomy of Civilization and Barbarism (Civilización-Barbarie) has been part of Argentine literature ever since its origin. A critical reading of post-dictatorship fiction shows that a radical change has occurred. Both concepts have become inextricably linked, thus resulting in Civilibarbarie. A thorough reading of Ricardo Piglia’s ideas, as developed in his most important literary work, helps to understand that his critical approach, though still in terms of antinomy, allows to face the subsequent transformation. This article examines the history of the antinomy in Argentine and the political struggles it involves. The opposition civilización-barbarie becomes a residual component during the post-dictatorship era. Piglia’s original reading of twentieth century works begins at the end of the military dictatorship, but reformulates the antinomy in such terms as to allow for a better understanding of the later Argentine narrative. All of this turns Piglia into the earlier period critic who is key to understanding nowadays Argentina.

  • Estéticas elementales: Liscano, Pucurull, Tiscornia. Notas sobre la
resistencia en el Penal de Libertad (Uruguay 1972-1985)

    • Authors: María Teresa Johansson Márquez
      Pages: 88 - 108
Abstract: This article discusses a number of aesthetic productions by Uruguayan artists and writers who suffered political imprisonment for over a decade during the dictatorial period. The study examines the relationship between subjectivity, limit-experience and artistic creation in Carlos Liscano's novel La mansión del tirano, Nuño Pucurull's engravings Ómnibus and El Boliche and Jorge Tiscornia and José Pedro Charlo's El almanaque. The aim is to interpret these works taking into account the context of production while in prison and thus to propose an interpretation of psychological resistance processes associated with language, memory and abstract operations on temporality.

  • I DID. Actos éticos en el reino de la finitud

    • Authors: Luz Rodríguez Carranza
      Pages: 109 - 121
Abstract: In his last seminar, Alain Badiou denounces the contemporary ideology based on the notion of finitude, a set of devices that destroy temporality and memory. It is the logic of the Western consumer who is satisfied with everything that can be bought and is compatible with the system, even though it is unjust and unjustifiable. Badiou, unlike Bosteels, does not explicitly name the most obvious roots of this philosophical reference: finitude is the name of a French critical theory-elaborated first in Heidegger's wake, later in Derrida's - that refuses any preeminence or domain of the subject and conceives man as pure receptivity exposed to language. The death of the subject is accompanied by a construction of images, “public persons” as Groys calls them, empty subjectivities, “self-designs” (Foster). We analyze three acts inconsistent both with finitude discourse and with self-design in three contemporary works of different genres: Birdman by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Spam by Rafael Spregelburd and Simone by Eduardo Lalo. We put forward the hypothesis that these acts can be seen as “pure acts”, in Kant’s words: those who are beyond equivalence and all performance criteria, which contain in themselves their own purpose. They may seem parapraxes, and are, in a sense, “symbolic suicides of the subject”, which can be born again, but will no longer be the same.

  • El silencio profundo de los hombres de barro. Arte y compromiso en 2501
Migrants, un documental de Yolanda Cruz

    • Authors: An Van Hecke
      Pages: 122 - 139
Abstract: In this article we analyse Yolanda Cruz’s documentary 2501 Migrants: A Journey/Reencuentros (2010), which focuses on Alejandro Santiago’s monumental artistic project 2501 migrantes. The Oaxacan artist Santiago made 2,501 clay sculptures as a tribute to all the migrants that left his village of Teococuilco. Cruz’s ethnographic documentary not only poses questions on migration and indigenous cultures, it also reflects on art and the role of the artist as a community builder. In order to better understand how Cruz succeeds in attracting the audience, we examine the narrative strategies (perspective, time, space and dramatic curve), the different interview modes and the aesthetic elements (images and music). Besides the sadness of the artist in his near-ghost town, there is the strong impact of the artistic sculptures on screen. Through these images both the artist and the documentary maker actively engage the audience to reflect on this utopian vision of social change.

  • Forma-de-vida en la literatura: dos comunidades

    • Authors: Martín Arias
      Pages: 140 - 153
Abstract: This article aims at analysing two contemporary Argentine novels, Luis Chitarroni’s Peripecias del no. Diario de una novela inconclusa (2007), and Facundo Soto’s Taller literario (2013). It describes both texts as representing literary communities organized in order to build what Giorgio Agamben calls “form-of-life”, i.e., a life so intrinsically intertwined with its form, its style, that life and form –in this case, literature– become inseparable. We suggest that the exploration of a community is necessarily the exploration of its language, and we show that if the communities portrayed in these two novels exist in order to write and to read literature, then their languages differ drastically, widening thus the space of literature.

  • Pequeños combatientes, de Raquel Robles. Proyecciones ficcionales: de la
infancia clandestina a la militancia de H.I.J.O.S.

    • Authors: Teresa Basile
      Pages: 154 - 168
Abstract: Raquel Robles' novel Pequeños combatientes (2013) allows us to explore some of the main challenges faced by the HIJOS organization since its foundation in the mid-90s, a context marked by neoliberalism and Pardon laws passed by the Carlos Menem government. The novel stands as a screen on which the author projects a militant fiction through a girl’s voice that connects with her later engagement and practice with HIJOS. This challenge articulates the revolutionary ideals of parents with the humanitarian narrative of Human Rights associations. A return to the past permits to convert the parents' loss into a beginning militancy, the concept of resilience thus helps us to approach the reconversion process of a traumatic scene into a responsible action.

  • Infancia y militancia en el cine latinoamericano de las generaciones
segundas Postales de Leningrado, El premio, Diário de uma busca

    • Authors: Cecilia González
      Pages: 169 - 192
Abstract: This paper aims to study the cinematic reworking of 1960s and 70s revolutionary militancy in a corpus of early 21st century Latin American films (El premio (2011) by Paula Markovich, Postales de Leningrad (2007) by Mariana Rondón, and Crónica de uma fuga (2006) by Flavia Castro). Our main objectives are: (1) to study the mechanisms of (re)constructing identities and genealogies typical of post memory generations; (2) to analyze the intersections and interferences between the familiar paradigm and the militant paradigm in these stories of the recent past; (3) to reflect on the construction of a generational narrating instance that articulates the private and the public in a statement that explores new forms of political films; (4) to think about bridges linking this film production with other narrative genres, like novel, visual arts, theater, and about the relations between militant commitment and figures of the past and of the present.

  • Memoria transgeneracional, resistencia y resiliencia en producciones
           artístico-literarias de autoras chilenas contemporáneas

    • Authors: Alicia Salomone; Milena Gallardo
      Pages: 193 - 213
Abstract: In this essay we aim to discuss the connections between the recent past memories in Chile and the Chilean women’s artistic productions, from the perspectives proposed by children and grandchildren of the victims of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973-1990). Our purpose is to observe how the cultural and aesthetic elaborations of traumatic memories have evolved in the works created by women artists and to study their trans-generational transmission, which implies both resilience and resistance strategies developed within a changing context. To achieve these objectives, we analyze El daño (1997), a novel by Andrea Maturana, and Reinalda del Carmen, mi madre y yo (2007), a documentary film by Lorena Giachino, work of two contemporary women that addresses these topics, focusing both on the construction of fictional worlds and on the represented subjectivities and their resilience and resistance strategies against impunity and in favour of truth and justice.

  • Bruzzone y el deseo de literatura

    • Authors: Julio Premat

Abstract: In his texts, Felix Bruzzone transforms predictable questions (“How to be a writer, son-of-disappeared-parents'” or “How to write coming from a filiation that is full of holes'”), into programmatic ones (“How to establish a personal literature'” or “How to project oneself into a literary future that is unpredictable but wanted'”), which is to say that, starting with an identity framed by social discourse that is both omnipresent and normative, the author will suggest a succession of transgressions, shifts, and variations which, instead of extending the corpus of the “literature of the disappeared,” will subvert and transform it into something else. The article analyzes the literary beginnings of the author (two books published in the same year: 76 and Los Topos), as being examples of resistance and a method of resilience, not in the face of wounded memories but through the detachment afforded by a creative space. This reclaiming, which endeavors to “imagine a future” for literature in a period where its death has incessantly been proclaimed, is part of a current trend (that of a “post-apocalyptic" or “post-millenarian” multiform literature) that is being alluded to in the conclusion.

  • Ante el límite de la representación en el documental: cuerpo filmado,
           filmado-hablante, filmante, (anti)espectante

Abstract: This essay re-thinks some of the problems of contemporary documentary filmmaking, including categories such as the figure or author-function (long-debated not only in the field of cinema, but also in the fields of literature and philosophy), the concept of body and spectator, and the problem of representation, in the context of a series of documentaries sometimes considered as post-memory, critical memory, “first person” documentaries, or labyrinthine memory. My hypothesis is that the way in which corporality is modulated in the plot –in which memory and gender are decisive concepts and experiences to the problem of representation– produces not only the specificity in the analysis of certain documentary films, but also and ultimately the way of thinking the place of the body in the modes of production and reproduction in the audio-visual media of the global capitalism.
