  • Video and storytelling in a digital world: interactions and narratives in
           videoclips

    • Authors: Rodrigo Oliva; José Bidarra, Denize Araújo
Abstract: This paper presents a study about narratives in music videos. It discusses the arrangements of audio-visual languages from settings established by characteristics of the media, emphasizing the role of platforms for the diffusion of information and entertainment such as YouTube. It highlights a dialogue within cinema’s own language and shows that, in contemporary scenarios, music videos actually tell stories. It is argued that contemporary music videos, in great majority, increase the duration of music, with pauses, performances of characters, insertion of dialogues and other structuring elements that are not typical of the classic and conventional paradigms of a language. For our purposes, the objects of this study are the music videos of Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan. The theoretical foundation is established through authors involved in debates around a culture of convergence, transmedia storytelling and interactions among the audio-visual languages.

  • Figurations of the body in the snapshot of digital photojournalism: the
           non-pose and disfiguration

    • Authors: Alene Lins; Madalena Oliveira, Luís António Santos
Abstract: This article analyses the technological changes that have modified the snapshot in photojournalism. Formerly, snapshot was a result of the technique and expertise of the photographer. Today, due to a kind of “agility” of the cameras, it has become a possible practice for any photo-reporter. Sequential photographs turn the portrayed subject’s body into a pliant element of the editorial process. In figurations that privilege unfulfilled gestures and disfigurements, some images published by the press symbolically alter the social representation of the person portrayed. The study described within this paper also points to the use of an aesthetic of the grotesque, present in the expressions, gestures and posture of the subject photographed and to a discourse of the snapshot as a regime of power exerted by the press.

  • Figurações de corpo no espontâneo do fotojornalismo digital: a
           não-pose e a desfiguração

    • Authors: Alene Lins; Madalena Oliveira, Luís António Santos
Abstract: Este artigo analisa as alterações tecnológicas que modificaram o espontâneo do fotojornalismo.

  • Virginia Woolf and photography

    • Authors: Maggie Humm
Abstract: From 2000, criticism on Woolf and the visual has quadrupled in volume. The research work about a photographic Woolf – which include other photographers’ interaction with Woolf such as Gisèle Freund or my own analysis of Woolf and Bell’s personal photo albums – shows how these newer issues of Woolf and photography are now absolutely central in any consideration of Virginia Woolf studies, gaining a noticeable importance when we consider the interdisciplinary issue of photography and gender.

  • Virginia Woolf e a fotografia

    • Authors: Maggie Humm

  • Forget Bárbara Virgínia' A forerunner filmmaker between
           Portugal and Brazil

    • Authors: Paula Sequeiros; Luísa Sequeira
Abstract: Bárbara Virgínia was a forerunner film director in Portugal and the Festival de Cannes. Starting artistically as a diseuse and actress, she directed a feature film and a documentary in her youth, in 1946. Bárbara emigrated to Brazil in 1952 to work on radio and television, the country where she settled, formed a family, eventually abandoning the stages, and died in 2015. For this socio-biography, we collected and analysed public and private memory documents, a research interview and conversations with her family. To construct our analysis and strengthen a feminist perspective, we used Portuguese cinema’s History and memoirs. We both avoided mythologising and aimed at unveiling the patriarchal gaze which shapes some literature about Bárbara Virgínia. We built our questioning and analysis from Linda Alcoff’s and Teresa de Lauretis’s gender studies, from the sociology of culture by Pierre Bourdieu who Bev Skeggs borrowed for her intersection of class, gender and coloniality, alongside historical and social research about both countries’ context. The paper focuses on the artistic and familiar roles played by the filmmaker, and proposes an interpretation aimed to contribute to a fine knowledge about gender and class barriers to cultural and professional practices at that time, while it also discusses the erasure of memory about Barbara Virginia.

  • “Neither here nor there”: traces of the feminine in the
           photoperformances of Ana Mendieta

    • Authors: Olga da Costa Lima Wanderley
Abstract: This article addresses the questions triggered by the work of the Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta, who has a large part of her work composed exclusively of camera performances and what she termed earth-body-works. Through her strategies of representation based on the disappearance of the female body, Mendieta draws our attention to the legitimized violence and erasures through the establishment of fixed identities – ethnic and gender – within the hegemonic discourses of power. The notions of performance as an instrument for transmission of knowledge and cultural memory, of performativity as a constitutive factor of the categories of identity, as well as of archive, repertory and live event will be explored in the effort to problematize as the themes of exile and feminine, regular in the art of Mendieta, reach a deeply political dimension based on their artistic propositions that integrate photography with performance art.

  • The (in)visibility of the faceless women: ethics and politics on the
           photographic images by Teresa Margolles

    • Authors: Ângela Marques; Angie Biondi
Abstract: In the opposite side of these moralizing pictures produced by traditional journalistic and photojournalistic narratives, the Mexican artist Teresa Margolles creates art works that disclose the vulnerable condition of women in the brutality of serial murders in order to connect individual suffering to a collective ethics of responsibility. In this text, the analytical work focuses on two of Margolles recent art works: La búsqueda (2014) and Pesquisas (2016). Taking the concepts of vulnerability and precariousness (Butler, 2006; Butler et al., 2016), we argue that the relation between violence and gender in Margolles’s art work is presented as resistance addressing a common as polemical public space (Rancière, 2004), and giving place to the possibility of an interpellation scene (Butler, 2015). We also consider that this photographic work, which articulates individual sufferings in a complex narrative capable to invite spectators to a careful and reflexive contemplation, give rise to a political and aesthetical gesture that can be related to a politics of the images as it is argued by Jacques Rancière (2010b) and Georges Didi-Huberman (2012). The political and aesthetical dynamics crossing Margolles photographs is also related to the ethical responsibility voiced by Emmanuel Levinas (1982) concept of face.

  • Digital Pygmalion: the symbolic and visual construction of the feminine in
           CoverDoll online magazine

    • Authors: Maria João Faustino
Abstract: This study aims to question and problematize the construction of gendered meanings and visual codes in the digital context. Rooted in the theoretical framework of cyberfemism, it analyzes the visual and linguistic content of CoverDoll, a monthly e-zine thematically devoted to sex dolls. The Pygmalion myth is proposed as the symbolic framework of CoverDoll, since the linguistic and pictorial devices that support a simulated subjectivity seem to reproduce its main backdrop: the feminine is constructed as alterity and a product of male desire. The analysis of CoverDoll’s portfolio and fictional discourses suggests the persistence of symbolic and aesthetical conventions despite technological ruptures. The operating mechanisms in the tradition of painting described by John Berger seem resiliently translated into the visual construction of the feminine in CoverDoll: the portrayed feminine figure addresses a masculine voyeur which is absent from the picture. The camera replaces the mirror as a symbolic device of the projected female’s narcissism, as the multiple references to the camera in the fictional discourses forge the idea of female vanity. The images displayed overall eroticize and objectify the artificial female bodies. The fictional narratives mobilize and intertwine a set of stereotypes that associate femininity with futility, seduction and caring.

  • Beautiful and healthy! The women in the pages of Alterosa magazine
(1939-1945) during the New State and the Americanization process of Brazil

    • Authors: Gelka Barros
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the discursive strategies present on illustrated magazine Alterosa. The aim is to understand the construction of Brazilian woman’s social role in the period 1939-1945, a scenario that has redefined the bodily standard, conforming social behavior through moral values based on marital order. The methodology used combines text content analysis and photography. The theoretical input subsidizes reflections, based on Scott (1995), Perrot (2000), Maia (2001), Del Priori (2003) and Matos (2003), aggregating contextual specificity from the New State in Goellner (2008) and Carvalho (2011). To understand the circumstances of the Americanization process it sought dialogue with Tota (2000). From the analysis it has been concluded that speeches published in the magazine about women, by indicating traces of a body education, lined with the US mass culture nationalist and with the project of President Getúlio Vargas, which was known as New State (1937-1945) and characterized by centralization of power, authoritarianism, populism, nationalism and anti-communism (Neto, 2013).

  • The Brazilian woman: from the colonial photography to contemporary
           Portuguese photography

    • Authors: Lorena Travassos
Abstract: This study aims to carry out an initial analysis of how the Brazilian woman image is shaped by a discourse that is historically constructed and reinforced by colonial photography. This visuality has endured through the ages and represents a form of contemporary colonialism, as it is characterized by an identity reductionism disguised as a global ideology. The possibility of paradox prevalence in these speeches is analyzed through a critical view of the work of André Cepeda and Miguel Valle de Figueiredo, Portuguese photographers who has produced photography artwork about the Brazilian woman. In these images, the construction of a visual concept of Brazilian women revealed underlying statements supported by their perceptions and experiences, as well as in generalized beliefs. Thus, it was concluded that the understanding of the image of Brazilian women as portrayed by those photographers shows itself covered of brand new colonizing processes in which the Brazilian woman’s image is linked with a sense of an available and sensual body, imbued with the concept of a colonial body that still persists in contemporary imagery.

  • Hermaphroditism and intersexuality in Portuguese medical photograph

    • Authors: António Fernando Cascais
Abstract: The interest harboured by the Visual Culture of Medicine in photographic images of hermaphrodites dates back in Portugal to the birth of medical photography, with the photographic recording of a case of male hermaphroditism, that was studied in 1864 by Carlos Miguel Augusto May Figueira (1829-1913) at the Medical Clinic Service of the S. José Hospital, only four years after the publication of the seminal work on this topic by Félix Nadar. This 1864 study is one of the founding elements of a Portuguese scientia sexualis in the wider context of modern sexology, as described by Michel Foucault, that evolved in Portugal between the mid-19th century and the 1930s-1940s. The thematic lineage of research into hermaphroditism and intersexuality, initiated by May Figueira was subsequently pursued by Portuguese clinicians and medical scientists from the first decade of the 20th century up until the 1940s. The ultimate goal of the medical photographic recording of hermaphrodites was to pave the way to surgical correction, in strict compliance with binary sexual dimorphism that the original diagnosis never dared to question.

  • Can there be a feminist aesthetic'

    • Authors: Claire Raymond
Abstract: Can there be a feminist aesthetic'” analyzes the difficulty of finding an ontological position from which to write about photography created by women. It interrogates the discomfort of inhabiting, socially, and in art and literature, the position of the embodied feminine, and seeks through aesthetic analysis to mine this discomfort. The essay argues that despite the social and intellectual discomfort of articulating a space of the feminine, in that this space is always already coded as oppressed, there is a value in interpreting photography created by women through the lens of feminist resistance. The article concedes that defining the word woman is always a risk, in that the term reflects manifold and contradictory embodied experiences. And yet, within this avowed risk emerges the only space of possible resistance to oppression, the opportunity to create a rearrangement of the visible so that the category of the oppressed woman, however phantasmatic, is re-envisioned as sovereign. However, each act of re-envisioning woman must be culturally specific. Hence, the essay concludes with an interpretation of Ethiopian photographer Aida Muluneh’s series of images Dinkinesh (or, “you are beautiful”), evoking the remains of an Ethiopian hominid that were long considered to be the oldest of human ancestors. Muluneh reclaims this distant ancestor as Ethiopian, dressing her in an extravagant red gown, using photography to re-envision Dinkinesh’s fall into history, granting this ancestor the power to haunt modernity.
