Abstract: Source: Volume 9, Issue 1, pp 15 - 54This research aims to shed light on women’s tombstones in eastern Algeria through conducting a comparative, analytical, archaeological, and artistic study in terms of their form or content, as Algeria—East or West—maintains an exquisite array of tombstone inscriptions pertaining to Algerian women. The research is divided into two themes; the first being a descriptive study of the tombstones—the topic of this research—indicating the titles of headstones and dates of death. The second theme is a comparative, analytical study of tombstones representing their raw materials and overall composition, and the scripts of inscriptions which vary between leafy Kufic, Naskh, and Thuluth, in addition to the names and titles of the deceased, the prayers, and the Hijri months.

Abstract: Source: Volume 9, Issue 1, pp 55 - 76This study is one of the significant researches that accurately traces the development of documentary inscriptions in Islamic arts, most particularly in Morocco. The importance of this study lies in tracing the development of documentary inscriptions in Islamic arts in Morocco during the rule of Almohad and Marinid dynasties, in addition to identifying their contents, highlighting their artistic patterns, and emphasizing the diversity of their materials and the various methods of their implementation in different materials; including stone, gypsum, metal, wood, pottery, porcelain, and more. The study classifies these inscriptions according to their historical chronology and artistic style, providing an accurate scientific description that can help scholars, researchers, and specialists clearly document the history of the inscriptions lacking the date or place of manufacture. The study analyzes Almohad and Marinid documentary inscriptions and clarifies the historical and archaeological implications of those inscriptions, through tracing the names and titles mentioned in them and interpreting related issues. It also highlights the reciprocal influences on the documentary inscriptions in Moroccan applied arts during the Almohad and Marinid dynasties, received from either the Islamic East or Andalusia. In addition, the study sheds light on the most important centers for manufacturing the materials of those inscriptions and their most famous manufacturers, all of which add a new value that effectively contributes to tackling many historical incidents, and political and social issues posed by the inscriptions in Morocco.

Abstract: Source: Volume 9, Issue 1, pp 77 - 97Thousands of textbooks left by students in their schools were found in the cities of Nippur, Ur, Isin, Uruk, and Larsa. Being the primary reference for identifying these stages, some of those textbooks were written in Sumerian and others in both Sumerian and Akkadian, indicating that the Sumerian language continued to be used in subsequent centuries despite the demise of the political Sumerian rule. The textbooks included lists of names of animals, plants, birds, and so forth. At that time, students had to undertake four stages; the first of which was learning cuneiform glyphs. In the second stage, they copied words and terms written by their teachers on the left side of the clay tablet to the right side of the tablet. After those practices, they start copying some royal and literary texts. In the third stage, they learned mathematics, including multiplication, division, algebra, and so on, in addition to writing economic documents. The fourth stage included learning the language used in legal cases and court procedures, as well as writing personal and royal letters. After completing the curriculum of each stage, students had to sit for an exam. According to school heritage, students apparently started their education at an early age until adolescence. They stayed away from their families for long durations. There are also indications to the presence of females in those schools. Moreover, education was most likely restricted to well-off people. Models of those school buildings were found either attached to temples or in the houses of some teachers.

Abstract: Source: Volume 9, Issue 1, pp 98 - 124Assyrians kings had special interest in astronomy due to its significance in their personal and political lives in order to foretell the future and interpret natural phenomena. Hence, they established several observatories in numerous cities and recruited dozens of astronomers , whose mission was delivering periodic reports on forthcoming phenomena in their regions in order to avoid any risks that the country or the king may face.Given that the Sumerian language continued to be used in royal writings and letters during the 1st millennium BCE, some Assyrian astronomers had to clarify in their reports the intended meaning of the Sumerian symbols, many of which bear multiple meanings when translated into Akkadian language, as though being embedded in a dependent clause. Their aim was to prevent reciters from misinterpreting the intended meaning of the terms included in the letter before the king.In some cases, the intended Akkadian equivalents were written in small-sized glyphs below the Sumerian terms—in other words, the interpretation was embedded between the lines.

    • Authors: Editors Abgadiyat
      First page: 125
Abstract: Source: Volume 9, Issue 1, pp 125 - 149Gravestones have a major significance in history and archaeology for being authentic historical documents that reveal many aspects of ancient societies pertaining to their population, races, religious culture, language, professions, trades, and many other aspects. Given that the heritage of Gaza has been subjected to destruction due to political conflict and negligence, the researcher embarked on several tours to take an inventory of gravestones in Gaza’s cemeteries in reality, which are of great importance with respect to Gaza’s eminent figures and their families during the end of the Ottoman era.The total number of gravestones tallied in Gaza reached 139, dating back to the period between AH 1230/1814 CE and the British occupation of Palestine in AH 1336/1917 CE, which is the date of the most recent gravestones. On one of the highest hills of Bab al-Bahr (Gate of the Sea) and Al-Sheikh Shaban cemetery, 45 tombstones were found belonging to the families: El-Husseini, Abu Khadra, Abu Shaban, Saq Allah, El-Bar'asi, Abu Assi, Murshid, El-Ja'farawi, El-Ghusain, Si-Salem, Al-Radwan, and others. In the Bin Marwan cemetery, 37 tombstones were discovered belonging to the families: El-Nakhal, El-Shawwa, Wafa El-Alami, El-Bitar, El-Wahidi, El-Khaznadar, and others. In El-Tiflisi (Abu al-Kass) cemetery in the Shuja'iyya neighborhood, 18 tombstones were discovered belonging to the families: Bseiso, Hathat, and sheikhs of El-Hasanat tribe, El-Sunna', El-Qadirat, and others. In Addiriyah and El-Tamrtashi cemetery, 9 tombstones were found belonging to the families: El-Tamrtashi, Murad, El-Batsh, El-Jabali, and others; 3 tombstones belonging to Al-Ghusain family were found in the cemetery of Al-Ghusain school; and 2 tombstones belonging to Al-Husseini’s and El-Jaouni’s families were found in El-Mufti cemetery. In the cemetery of the Orthodox Church of Saint Porphyrius, 25 gravestones were found belonging to the families: Zarifa, El-Tarzi, Farah, Qifa, El-Madbak‎‏, El-Sayegh, Musaad, Shuhaiber, El-Tawil, and El-Jildah.

Abstract: Source: Volume 9, Issue 1, pp 150 - 194The Sharifian Saadi Dynasty ruled Morocco for more than one century and a half, during which the Saadians achieved numerous political and military victories, the foremost of which are defeating the Portuguese army in the famous Battle of Oued El Makhazeen in AH 986/1578 CE and taking control over western Sudan. Moreover, they established marvelous religious, civil, and military buildings, many of which still stand in good condition up to the present time.Numerous writings with various contents were inscribed on the façades of these buildings, ranging from Quranic and poetic verses to summoning and religious statements. Furthermore, the distinct characteristics of those inscriptions are not only artistically valuable to the archaeological studies, but are also of great use to other fields, including historical studies, media, and da'wah, which is the matter that we aim to highlight in this research. At that time, those inscriptions were means of summoning, preaching, and guidance at a time when mass media were very limited. The contents of those writings also reveal the devoutness of the Sharifian Saadi Dynasty, the authenticity of their faith, their jihad against the Christian occupier both verbally and with weapons, their eagerness to fight heresies and deviations from religion and to disseminate the proper Islamic faith in accordance with the mission of the Prophet Muhammad, and the demonstration of Islamic teachings to their subjects with the purpose of guiding them using various methods available at that time.In this sense, those selected texts were inscribed on remarkable parts of the façades of their buildings, especially congregational mosques, schools, zawiyas (little makeshift mosques), and saqayat (waterings), all of which were facilities granted for the public easement of access to all Muslims. Moreover, a considerable interest had grown in the good display of those writings in order to enhance their readability and achieve the greatest possible benefit of them, for they had been necessary means of communication with the public at that time.
