  • Of Dice and Divination

    • Authors: Gregory Haynes, Michael Witzel
      Pages: 1 - 26
Abstract: Three ancient traditions of sortilege, widely dispersed geographically, share remarkably similar features. A “dice” game from ancient India attested in the Vedic literature from ca. 1000 BC, the I Ching oracle from China also dating from about the same period, and a divination method still used among indigenous people in Guatemala that dates from the pre-Columbian period, all share the same underlying structure. Although elaborate systems for interpreting the results of the sortilege differ in each of these cultures, the basic process for casting the dice or oracle — the random selection, the counting in groups, and the determination of the outcome by the remainder — are parallel in all three cases. This paper will describe these three different systems, compare their similarities and differences, and suggest a process by which they may have developed from a common source.

  • Building Laomedon’s Troy: A Northern Parallel

    • Authors: Dmitri Panchenko
      Pages: 27 - 32
Abstract: The strange servitude of Poseidon and Apollo to Laomedon who denies payment for construction of the wall of Troy and threatens the gods (Il. 7. 452–453 and 21. 441–457) can be explained in terms of the transformation of original motifs. Divine builders were originally busy with constructing the stronghold for the gods. Since the Olympian gods as shown by Homer no longer need a stronghold, the story of the glorious construction was relocated and combined with the motif known in folklore of a master and disciple working for a treacherous king.

  • Iarl and Iormun-; Arya- and Aryaman-: A Study in Indo-European Comparative
           Mythology

    • Authors: John Bengtson
      Pages: 33 - 67
Abstract: In 1854 Martin Haug of Heidelberg suggested a root connection between the obscure German god Irmin and the minor Indic god Aryaman. Almost a century later (1952) Jan de Vries of Leiden agreed, with some reservations, and since then this theory has remained in dispute. In my study of this subject several arguments support the Haug – Vries hypothesis:
Phonetic compatibility between OHG Irmin, ON Iǫrmun-, and Indic Aryaman (and between Nordic Iarl and Indic Arya). All are derivable from an IE root *H1er- ‘free man, clan member’.
Phonetic and semantic parallels, such as between Old Swedish iarl and iarmun-, Old English eorl and eormen-; OIr aire and Airem; and OInd árya-, aryá-, ā́rya- and Aryamán-.
Functional compatibility between German irmindiot ‘the collective human race’, Irminsūl ‘universalis columna’, OE eormen-wyrt ‘mallow’ (medicinal plant), etc., Indo- Iranian A(i)ryaman ‘god of marriage, hospitality, healing’, and the Irish hero Airem, all associated with Dumézil’s “first function.”
Patterning of personal names like OHG Irman-frīt, Irman-drūt, etc., like other IE names compounded from names of deities, e.g. ON Ás-ráðr (áss ‘god’ + ráðr ‘help[ed]’ = OHG Ans-rat). OI Aryama-rādha- ‘favored by Aryaman’ has a precise parallel in OHG Irmin-rat ‘helped by Irmin’.
Cosmology: An old German name for the Great Bear constellation was Irmines- wagen ‘Irmin’s wagon’, and, according to Grimm, the Milky Way galaxy was *Irmin(es)-strasse ‘Irmin’s street’; cf. OI Aryamṇáḥ pánthāḥ ‘path of Aryaman’ = Milky Way.The argument that Irmin simply means ‘great, immense, elevated’ and is the sole remnant of the Indo-European middle participle in Germanic is implausible; the form Irmines- is clearly the genitive form of a name. The oldest sources and comparative mythology point to Irmin / Iǫrmun as some kind of divine or heroic entity closely connected with sovereignty, ancestry, and the collective life of the people (irmin-diot). In the post-Christian literary traditions of the Germanic and Celtic peoples the original patterns were transformed and distorted.

  • Biblical Mt. Ararat: Two Identifications

    • Authors: Armen Petrosyan
      Pages: 68 - 80
Abstract: The biblical Ararat, mountain of landing of Noah’s Ark has two general identifications in the Armenian Highland: Mountain of Corduena (modern Cudi dağı) and Masis (Ararat, Ağrı dağı), situated respectively in the extreme south-east and extreme north-east of modern Turkey). The ancient sources actualized the first localization. Since the 12th century, the second became more and more popular. The paper deals with the myths and legends associated with those mountains and the history of identification of the biblical Ararat.

  • The Motif of ‘the Ill-Willed Nursing Woman Who is Harmed’ in the
           Mythologies of Herakles and Krishna

    • Authors: Arjan Sterken
      Pages: 81 - 99
Abstract: The present paper explores the motif of ‘the ill-willed nursing woman who is harmed’ in the mythological accounts of Hēraklēs and Kṛṣṇa. Core versions are distilled from five Greek and seven Sanskrit texts. As to the former, Hēra is deceived or persuaded in nursing Hēraklēs and when she throws him off, her milk either gives Hēraklēs immortality or forms the Milky Way. As to the latter, Pūtanā poisoned her breast to kill Kṛṣṇa, but dies when Kṛṣṇa drains her life. By applying the method of ‘reciprocal illumination’ I uncover a general structure behind both texts and distinguish six basic elements: the identity of the nurse; the content of the breast; the deception; the harm done; the gift; and the aftermath. While I intend to show that both stories contain these same basic elements, they both use and develop them in different ways with different but related results.

  • The Dojoji Tale and Ancient Bronze Metallurgical Traditions

    • Authors: Reinier Hesselink
      Pages: 100 - 114
Abstract: A comparison of the motifs in the different versions of the famous Japanese folktale about the Dōjōji Temple leads the author to other tales which share some of the same motifs. In this way, he isolates two motif clusters, one on the theme of the mixed marriage between humans and snakes, and another one centered on the traditions of bell casting. In the Dōjōji Tale these motif clusters seem to have been joined by Buddhist authors eager to employ local pagan tales to write new stories with a Buddhist message. Next, the author translates two Chinese tales in which the same motif clusters appear. Although these tales show unmistakably the influence of popular Taoism, the similarities with the Dōjōji Tale are too striking to be coincidental. In his conclusion, the author proposes that the tales with these motifs were brought from China to Japan before the introduction of Buddhism (552).
