:The present article undertakes the study of Moreto’s play La cena del rey Baltasar. After identifying the biblical and Calderonian sources of the play, a dramatic, stylistic, and symbolic analysis of the work follows, with the aim of reflecting on the intentions of the author in reusing certain elements, combined with notable innovations. In order to do so, we will take into account three aspects of the use of the sources: 1) the development of the wicked character of Baltasar, who creates space for the conflict; 2) the preparation of the great banquet as the decisive moment of the dramatic tension and of Baltasar’s irreverent behaviour; and 3) the dramatic construction of his final punishment.

:The adventure of the Twelve of England, inspired on a Portuguese medieval legend, is one of the best-known episodes of Luís de Camões’s Lusiadas (1572). This paper proposes an analysis of other retellings of the story about twelve Portuguese champions travelling to England at the request of the Duke of Lancaster to defend the honour of twelve ladies offended by twelve English ruffians, such as those contained in Pedro Mariz’s Dialogos de Varia Historia (1599), in Manuel Correia’s Os Lusiadas do Grande Luis de Camoens. Principe da Poesia Heroica. Commentados (1613), in Francisco Soares Toscano’s Parallelos de Principes, e Varões Illustres (1623), and in Manuel Soeiro’s Anales de Flandes (1624) ― among many others ― in order to study the presence and transformations of the camonian hypotext in the first half of the seventeenth century.

:The classic and monumental work by Maurice Molho left proof of the popular roots from which Cervantes drew in El retablo de las maravillas. The entremés, never represented in 1615, became a classic text and at the same time an object of revision, eventually turning into a hypotext for numerous authors who, at different times, turned their gaze to the cervantine text to provide their own version. In this paper, we will focus on analyzing the repercussion that El retablo de las maravillas had in Rafael Dieste and Lauro Olmo, two playwrights who recreated new and marvelous retablos from the cervantine piece and established an extremely interesting and fruitful network of intertextualities from multiple perspectives. The rewriting and updating of a classic text such as Cervantes´ entremés also offers a great potential for the teaching of literature, aspect to which we devote a brief final reflection.

:Regarding Calderón de la Barca’s well-known fondness for rewriting in multiple variants, this article focuses on how one of his earliest works, Judas Macabeo, staged in 1623, includes motives and passages that will recur in his later works. This situation shows, in addition to the coherence of the Calderonian dramaturgy, his precocity in creating a theatrical and poetic world of his own.

  • Leer y representar clásicos siempre (re)escritos. Angélica y Medoro del
Barroco a la corte de Fernando VI

    • Authors: Alexia Dotras Bravo
      Pages: 137 - 154
:Ferdinand VI and Barbara of Bragança, important patrons of the music and arts in Spain, created the most ambitious court concerning cultural entertainment in the European eighteenth century. The localization in the district archive of six editions of put-on-music theatre pieces between 1747 and 1757, and dedicated to the Queen, allows us to develop a historical and literary study on one of them, which originally begins in medieval times but that becomes relevant in the Spanish Baroque period thanks to Lope de Vega, Góngora and Cervantes, among others. Angélica y Meodoro, in Ferdinand VI’s court, is carried out by Pietro Metastasio (1705-1782), author of several opera librettos, and by Carlo Broschi Farinelli (1698-1782) or, as he used to sign in his Spanish compositions, Carlos Brosqui Farinelo, the singer who contributed to the success of these plays in the eighteenth century.
