  • Dickens and the City of London Conservatives
    • Abstract: This paper provides a transcription of and commentary on a previously uncollected letter and an unrecorded press notice written by Dickens while working as a reporter for the Morning Chronicle in 1836.Furnivals InnWednesday MorningDear TomI am obliged to go to Covent Garden Theatre, to the Conservative Dinner to-night, but if you will look in, and play a Rubber1 with the girls and their Uncle, I shall be as glad to hear you were here, as they will be to see you.Believe meEver YoursCharles DickensThe letter can be dated relatively easily. Dickens stayed at Furnival's Inn between 1834 and 1837, and lived there with Catherine and his sister-in-law Mary Hogarth (the "girls" of the letter) after his wedding on 2 April ... Read More

  • Dickens, Miscellanies, and Classical Traditions of Satire
    • Abstract: Adetailed examination of Charles Dickens's influence on the genesis and development of the periodical that was originally advertised in the Autumn of 1836 as "The Wits' Miscellany" has yet to be made. Nevertheless I am going to argue that the context of its establishment was something of a watershed in the development of Dickens's approach to satirical writing as a journalist, editor and author.1 "The Wits' Miscellany" was the planned title for the new monthly magazine that the publisher was projecting in 1836, to be jointly penned by the leading humorists of the day, and edited by the intensely fashionable "Boz," creative force behind a strange monthly confection of narratives known as The Posthumous Papers of the ... • Female Figures in Great Expectations: In Praise of Mrs. Joe
    • Abstract: Mrs. Joe Gargery of Great Expectations is a shrew. She bullies her husband, torments Pip, and constantly bewails her lot as a blacksmith's wife. Hard-featured and hard-nosed, she sums up in her person everything a woman of the time ought not to be.After her death, Joe will marry the plain1 but thoroughly feminine Biddy and, in quick order, impregnate her. It is impossible to imagine any such thing having happened in his marriage to Mrs. Joe, if only because, as the narrator mischievously informs us, she is impregnable, in the military sense of unbreachable–that is, impregnable to impregnation:2She was tall and bony, and almost always wore a coarse apron, fastened over her figure behind with two loops, and having a ... • Dreams of Dying Girls: The Poetry of Thomas J. Ouseley and Charles Dickens
    • Abstract: Dickens resigned from Bentley's Miscellany on 31 January 1839. However, his editorial obligations to the journal continued for a brief period. During that interval, Thomas J. Ouseley wrote to Dickens inquiring about "The Dream of the Dying Girl," a poem he submitted before Dickens relinquished the editorship. In March, Dickens wrote to assure Ouseley that he had "specially marked it," and sent it on "to Mr. Bentley's" with the annotation "'requiring attention.'" "I cannot think," he added, "that they will be so senseless to hesitate for an instant to avail themselves of it." Should the poem not appear in the next number, he continued, he counselled Ouseley "to address Mr. Bentley himself at No. 8 New Burlington ... Read More

  • Hard Times by Charles Dickens, the 4th Norton Critical Edition ed. by Fred
           Kaplan, (review)
    • Abstract: This is the fourth time Hard Times has been published in a Norton Critical edition, and it embodies a number of innovations. Shorter than most Dickens novels, Hard Times is a popular text to introduce students to Dickens, and it might seem easier for the instructor also. But if it has the advantage of relative brevity it presents problems of its own, not least those of the reader's need to accept its moments of high rhetoric, together with its parodic effects and the comic names of the more villainous characters, which have entered popular memory. At the same time, these problems have tended to obscure questions arising from the novel's response to the specific issue of the new industrialism. Furthermore, Hard ... Read More

  • Unsettling Dickens: Process, Progress and Change ed. by Christine Huguet
           and Paul Vita (review)
    • Abstract: The origins of Christine Huguet's and Paul Vita's collection Unsettling Dickens: Process, Progress and Change lie in the memorable "Tale of Four Cities" travelling conference that began in Paris and then moved to London by way of Boulogne and Rochester in the Bicentenary year of 2012. With its 2016 publication date, this volume might seem a slightly belated addition to the steady flow of monographs and essay collections published since that significant Dickensian anniversary. It is true the essays in Unsettling Dickens are uneven in quality, and many offer speculative explorations rather than authoritative critical statements. Such issues, however, are hardly unique in texts such as this one. What is refreshing is ... Read More

  • Charity and Condescension: Victorian Literature and the Dilemmas of
           Philanthropy by Daniel Siegel (review)
    • Abstract: The figure of the charitable lady-visitor, memorably embodied in Dickens's Mrs. Pardiggle, makes the starting point for Daniel Siegel's nicely-conceived exploration of Victorian philanthropy. "Condescension," in the eighteenth and early-nineteenth century "a means of validating and negotiating social authority" (4), takes on increasingly negative and patronizing connotations. Siegel maps this change within a nineteenth-century liberal framework in which self-determination is valorized and paternalism challenged. Drawing on the work of George Simmel and Stuart Hall, he develops a model of condescension as a "transactional protocol," "a social and literary convention with a particular and autonomous logic" (17). This ... Read More

  • Accident or Design: Writing the Victorian Metropolis by Paul Fyfe (review)
    • Abstract: "Towns," according to Dostoevsky's underground man, "can be either intentional or unintentional." The underground man speaks from St. Petersburg, which he calls "the most abstract and intentional city in the whole round world," but the question of how intention and its lack structure urban experience is also at the core of Paul Fyfe's book, which takes as its topic the Victorian metropolis, above all London but also the developing cities of the industrial north.2 Rather than intentional and unintentional, Fyfe's key terms are "accident" and "design," beginning from Henry James's 1888 statement that "on the banks of the Thames it is a tremendous chapter of accidents" (1). Fyfe adds nuance to James, drawing on ... Read More

  • Picturing the News by Catherine Waters and Ruth Brimacombe (review)
    • Abstract: Picturing the News is an exhibition about the rise of the "Special Correspondent" and "Special Artist" and the emergence in the later nineteenth century of a new kind of journalism aimed at providing the reader with vivid firsthand accounts and images of major historical events. It is divided into nine sections, the first of which introduces a thoroughly manageable number of "specials" of both kinds: three correspondents (William Howard Russell, George Augustus Sala and Archibald Forbes), and three artists (William Simpson, Sidney Prior Hall and Melton Prior). The success of the exhibition is in large measure to this concentration: concentration on a few individuals whom one gets to know in reasonable detail, and ... Read More
