  • Bung Against Spruggins: Reform in “Our Parish”
    • Abstract: We recently examined the description in Sketches by Boz of an incident in the ecclesiastical Arches Court of Doctors’ Commons (Long and Schlicke). This was a case brought by Michael Bumple against Thomas Sludberry. It involved an accusation of “brawling” or “smiting” in the vestry-room of a church and a potential penalty of excommunication – that is, a banning from attendance at church for a set period. Boz’s account has been long recognized as founded on a case Dickens encountered while working in 1830 as a clerk in the Commons.Boz has fun with the arcane and pompous procedures of the Court, contrasting them with the trivial and commonplace matters with which they are concerned, and ends his account hilariously by ... • David Copperfield and Pendennis: Answering Back
    • Abstract: In early January 1848, Thackeray wrote a letter to Dickens (which has not survived) praising Dombey and Son, then nearing its completion in serial form. Dickens responded warmly on 9 January, saying how delighted and touched he was by the “generous letter.” But he went on to press a broader issue, saying “I am always possessed with the hope of leaving the position of literary men in England, something better and more independent than I found it” (Letters 5: 227). It is a somewhat stuffy declaration, and Dickens tries to soften its tone by describing it as “a wild and egotistical fancy.” None the less, he turns to what had prompted the avowal, the set of parodies of contemporary writers which Thackeray had produced ... • Dickens at Garsington
    • Abstract: What follows is a preliminary section of a project with the provisional title “Dickens among the Modernists,” which aims to investigate how in the period surrounding the First World War Dickens came to be revalued and reinvented by a number of important Modernist writers and critics. I begin in an Anglophone context but will later go on to explore my topic in a broader perspective that will include a number of major European writers who responded acutely to Dickens’s work, Kafka and Strindberg among them.In the present phase of the work I shall take as the epicenter of this rediscovery in Britain the group of pacifists and war dissenters who gathered at Garsington Manor in Oxfordshire at the home of Lady Ottoline ... • Dickens Studies as a University Examination Subject in the 1850s
    • Abstract: In the second half of the nineteenth century many enthusiastic readers of Dickens were familiar with a “Pickwick Examination Paper” devised by the eccentric Oxbridge student Charles Stuart Calverley.1 The paper was used initially at an “examination” held at Christmas 1857 in Calverley’s rooms at Christ’s College, Cambridge. Ten-or-so of his friends and colleagues sat the exam, which Calverley, dressed in cap, gown and hood, conducted with mock formality. The prizes awarded – two first editions of Pickwick – were won by Walter William Skeat (later the Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge) and Walter Besant (later a popular novelist). Besant remembered that the candidates refreshed themselves after their exertions ... Read More

  • “Smart Dealings:” The Fate of Household Words in the United
           States
    • Abstract: In March 1852, the New York-based publishing house Harper Brothers distributed flyers that announced their triumph in securing advance sheets of Bleak House for serial publication in Harpers’ New Monthly Magazine. According to the flyer, Harpers paid Dickens $2,000 for the privilege.1 This deal marked an important moment in Dickens’s transatlantic career. In the preceding decade Dickens had seemed loath to forget about the “smart dealings” to which both he and his writings had been subjected by the US press in 1842.2 The hostility of journalists after his remarks on international copyright at a Boston public dinner in 1842 prompted Dickens to resolve “never from this time enter into negociation [sic] with any ... • Simply Dickens by Paul Schlicke (review)
    • Abstract: “In his art and in his life, it was […] as if Dickens led multiple lives” (xix). Thus Paul Schlicke concludes his preface to Simply Dickens, a short biography of the Inimitable in Simply Charly’s Great Lives Series. And thus the book proceeds, offering up twelve brief but densely packed chapters representative of the various characters Dickens played over the course of his life, from vagabond child to novice sketch-writer to celebrity novelist, journalist and editor-at-large. The dramatic framework that undergirds this study – the thesis-driven focus on “the essentially theatrical nature” of the life and work of Charles Dickens (xviii) – is accentuated at the outset by a cheeky model playbill introducing the cast ... • Mansions of Misery: A Biography of the Marshalsea Debtors’ Prison by
           Jerry White (review)
    • Abstract: Like Jerry Cruncher in A Tale of Two Cities, Jerry White performs an act of resurrection in his new history of the Marshalsea debtors’ prison. Although he is not the first in the field,1 he has unearthed a considerable amount of new information on the prison, derived from archives and obscure primary and secondary sources. White has previously published a trilogy of acclaimed histories of London in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries,2 as well as several “microhistories” that concentrate on narrow subjects. His historical knowledge – he is currently Professor of History at Birkbeck, University of London – is supplemented by his real-world experience: for more than forty years he worked in local ... • Mobility in the Victorian Novel: Placing the Nation by Charlotte Mathieson
           (review)
    • Abstract: This incisive and innovative study focuses on what Charlotte Mathieson terms the “nexus of body–space–mobility” (16). Considering novels written between 1840 and 1870, Mathieson is concerned to reorient discussion of the “journey” in Victorian fiction from the context of travel to that of mobility. As she sets out in her introduction (13), such a reorientation promotes consideration of a wide range of journey types, from the small-scale walk to the arduous intercontinental voyage, and of minor or secondary travel/mobility performances that may lie at narrative peripheries or appear incidental but which, within the theoretical framework constructed here, are revealed as thematically and contextually ... • Changing Hands: Industry, Evolution, and the Reconfiguration of the
Victorian Body by Peter J. Capuano (review)
    • Abstract: Think about the idea of “hands” in Dickens’s novels, and you will find examples everywhere. From Mrs. Joe’s famously vicious raising of Pip “by hand,” to Quilp’s servant who walks on his hands, or from the metonymic mass of distant “Hands” in Coketown, to the close-up of Scrooge’s tight-fisted hand, Dickens’s work is saturated with references to this (literally) pivotal body part. In Changing Hands, Peter Capuano revels in the diversity of Dickensian hands, as he ranges across “Fagin’s dirty fingernails, Miss Pecksniff’s lily hand, Stephen Blackpool’s steady grasp, and Uriah Heep’s sweaty palms,” not to mention Thomas Gradgrind’s “squarely pointing square forefinger” (127). But this is not a book of sweeping ... Read More
