  • Positively the Last Appearance: "BOZ" in Advertisements for Dombey and Son
    • Abstract: In this paper we report that Dickens's famous pseudonym survived for a time in publishers' advertisements in association with material which, by then, was itself attributed solely to "Charles Dickens."1In July 1836, "Boz," author of two volumes of selected Sketches with another in preparation and current "editor" of the monthly numbers of The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, was revealed to be Charles Dickens.2 By November 1837, as the serial neared its end, Dickens determined that, in volume form, it should carry the authorial name "Charles Dickens." Its publishers, Chapman and Hall, fresh in the trade and evidently happy to accommodate their best-selling author, agreed. Thereafter, with a few minor ... Read More

  • Lohrli Revisited: Newly Identified Contributors to Household Words
    • Abstract: For the past two years I have been engaged in researching and writing up the results of a major find I made in 2015 – a complete marked set of All the Year Round (1859–68), permitting the identification of hundreds of previously anonymous contributors for the very first time. The book that I have been working on renders Ella Ann Oppenlander's partial 1984 guide to the magazine obsolete and will serve as a companion to Anne Lohrli's 1973 guide to Household Words and its contributors, a work which provided both inspiration and a model. The bulk of my labor has involved trying to piece together lost lives from the archives, often solely on the basis of a defective name token. As an example of the type of challenge I ... Read More

  • Grammar of Choice: Charles Dickens's Authentic Religion
    • Abstract: When Robert Butterworth claims in Dickens, Religion, and Society (2016) that "Dickens's religion is absolutely central to his work" and further identifies five aspects in which "Dickens's religion goes to the very core" of his novels, he rests his argument on half a century of recent studies of Dickens's religion.1 While Butterworth's premise (that religion is all-important) grasps the essence, his conclusion that Christianity is the solution to all the social problems depicted in Dickens's fiction remains unsettling. Butterworth's careful examination of Bleak House and Little Dorrit, for example, gives the impression that religion is a remedy against a particular evil, as if religion is something ready-made for us ... • Dickens's Presidents
    • Abstract: No one expected John Tyler, a former senator from Virginia, to become America's tenth president. His presidency has been called an accident.1 In March 1841, William Henry Harrison was sworn in as the first Whig to hold the office.2 His campaign slogan, "Tippecanoe and Tyler too," commemorated a victory in the inconsequential Battle of Tippecanoe during the War of 1812; it also identified Tyler as an afterthought, only put on the ticket to please southern Democrats. When Harrison died after one month in office, Tyler proceeded to alienate both Whigs and Democrats, insuring that his would be a one-term presidency. The morning after Dickens arrived in Washington, D. C. in March 1842, he was taken to the White House for ... Read More

  • Tweeting Tippins: Using Digital Media to Recreate Our Mutual Friend's
           Serialization
    • Abstract: As the life and works of Charles Dickens become a subject of increasing fascination to a global audience through various media, particularly the Internet, the question arises of how best to expand online engagement with literary studies using different forms of modern technology. The University of London's Our Mutual Friend Reading Project at Birkbeck College addressed this challenge with an online endeavor which utilized Twitter, Storify, email, and Wordpress blog posts and reflective podcasts in order to digitally replicate, "update," and discuss the serialization of Our Mutual Friend (1864–65).1 Such media interaction can open the discussion of literary texts to interested parties and foster an online community ... • Charles Dickens: An Introduction by Jenny Hartley (review)
    • Abstract: Jenny Hartley's Charles Dickens: An Introduction serves as a compact and effective first guide to novice readers of Dickens. Hartley successfully combines biographical and period context with short stretches of literary analysis, packed efficiently into the space of 151 pages.Starting with Oliver Twist's famous "more" scene, Hartley unpacks its various registers: from black comedy to mundane speech, to Poor Law regulation parlance, to the narrator's distanced observations. She also calls attention to the scene's "choreographed" performativity, Cruikshank's illustration, and Oliver Twist's biographical context as Dickens's "bandwagon was starting to roll" (3, 6). The sustained attention to a specific scene makes ... Read More

  • The Age of Analogy: Science and Literature Between the Darwins by Devin
           Griffiths (review)
    • Abstract: Longtime readers of this journal may recollect that the subject of Dickens and analogy received book-length attention almost half a century ago when H. M. Daleski published his Dickens and the Art of Analogy as far back as 1970 – the year, indeed, in which DQ's predecessor first appeared. Devin Griffith's expansive and enthralling new book, however, takes an entirely different approach to that earlier study, focusing upon the relationships between evolutionary thought and literary forms and building, in particular, from the work of Gillian Beer, George Levine and Sally Shuttleworth. Focused upon "comparative historicism," a concept Griffiths defines as "a new mode of historical description furnished by contemporary ... Read More

  • Victorian Dogs, Victorian Men: Affect and Animals in Nineteenth-Century
Literature and Culture by Keridiana W. Chez (review)
    • Abstract: Our relationship with animals, Keridiana W. Chez suggests, poses "the ethical problem of our age" (153), invested as we are in pets as emotional tools for human wellbeing. Modern anxieties around animal sentience, their experience of pain, and the rights they should have are traced back to the nineteenth century in this compelling study of human-dog relations in the Victorian period. Chez draws on the central concerns of Animal Studies (the difficulty of representing animals as more than symbolic, or mirrors of our own humanity, rather than as fully realized individuals – and what exactly recognizing that individuality means, when we can only ever convey animality in human terms) in arguing that the Victorian dog ... • The Collected Letters of Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle eds. by Ian
Campbell, Aileen Christianson, David Sorensen (review)
    • Abstract: The 170 letters Carlyle wrote between July 1867 and December 1868 cover a difficult period of his life. Widowed at 70 after 44 years of marriage and alone in Cheyne Walk, Carlyle felt bereft, his life hollowed out by the unexpected death of his wife on 21 April 1865. "I am very sad of soul," he confessed to Charles Gavan Duffy. Duffy, an Irish friend and politician who emigrated to Australia two decades before, had recently sent Carlyle "various bits of intelligence" from the Antipodes, to which he gladly replied on 19 December 1868. News of the progress of a young student making his way with success in Australia agreed very well with him, Carlyle responded, noting that he and Duffy had done what they could to help ... Read More

  • Announcing Special Issues
    • Abstract: The editors of Dickens Quarterly, in consultation with members of the Editorial Board, are pleased to issue a call for contributions to a series of special issues of the journal. Three topics have been designated, each with a particular focus broad enough to offer opportunities for engagement from a variety of literary and non-literary perspectives.Wills in the novels, literally and metaphorically: their role as a narrative device, their importance and symbolic function; Dickens's personal and professional exposure to and knowledge of wills as a formal declaration of an intention to dispose of property; his arrangements for the distribution of his estate; the sociological and cultural implications of will-making ... • Dickens Society 23rd Annual Symposium "Dickens and Language": July 30 -
           August 1, 2018, Tübingen, Germany
    • Abstract: The 2018 Symposium will take place at Tübingen University, founded in 1477 and located in the Neckar Valley, between the Swabian Alb and the Black Forest. The overall research context at Tübingen links literary studies with linguistics – thus the symposium theme for 2018: Dickens and Language. The Dickens Society is pleased to hold its annual symposium for the first time in Germany. The airport nearest to Tübingen is in Stuttgart, the capital of the region of Baden-Württemberg, or Frankfurt International Airport (about 2. 5 hours by train from Tübingen).
