  • 'Cast Thy Burden upon the Lord, and He Shall Sustain Thee':
Consolatory Letter-practices at the Muscovy Tzar Court (second half of the
           seventeenth century)

    • Authors: Anastasia Aleksandrovna Preobrazhenskaya
Abstract: The second half of the seventeenth century in Muscowy witnessed dramatic changes in culture and society. With secular sphere slowly gaining its power, religious no longer played a solely dominant role in people's lives. The court culture was the first to embrace new tendencies and practices, with epistolary etiquette being one of them. In his consolatory letters a court poet Simeon Polotsky acted both as a clergyman and as a lay person. While drawing upon old Russian literary tradition ofconsolatory discourse, examples of which are found in metropolites' archives, at the same time Simeon introduces a completely new to the Moscow tzar court type of letter – a letter as a token of social interaction and structure.

  • Mercantile Arithmetic in Renaissance Italy: A Translation and Study of a
           Vernacular Abbaco Work

    • Authors: Alessandra Petrocchi
Abstract: This essay is a study of a Renaissance Italian manuscript which has been published under the title of Arte giamata Aresmetica (“The Art called Arithmetic”). This represents a type of mathematical texts called Libri d’abbaco or “abbacus books”, which were produced in large numbers during the period of the Italian Renaissance (13th -16th centuries CE). This paper provides the first translation into English of selected passages and an analysis of the algorithms found in this work. The style of presentation, the vocabulary used, and the mathematical procedures explained in Arte giamata Aresmetica manifest some features that deserve scholarly attention. Though the majority of the mathematical rules mentioned are fairly standard treatments of these subjects not unlike to those found in many other manuscripts written during this period, the uniqueness of this text lies instead in the author’s expository technique, in the sample problems presented, and in its distinctive dialectical terms. Aresmetica is a valuable source for the history of Renaissance business and culture as it gives us the feeling of how merchants operated, the mathematical ability and the mind-set they had to develop, and it provides interesting economic information of that time (prices, products, and various measuring units).

  • Listening to the Gaoler's Daughter

    • Authors: Kendra Preston Leonard
Abstract: In this essay, I explore the concept of madness in relation to the Gaoler's Daughter in Two Noble Kinsmen. By examining her supposed madness in the context of music and disordered vocality expressed through song; in light of the idea that one might talk oneself out of the suffering of emotional trauma to wellness; and in terms of her social class, I offer a new interpretation of the character’s behavior with the framework that her music is not mad, but rather an early-modern kind of mixtape, or specifically ordered collection of songs, that she uses both as a means of communication with others and as a device to work through her emotions and find resolution to her situation.

  • ‘A Gentlewoman of the Courte’: Introducing and Translating the
           Court Lady

    • Authors: Lisa Tagliaferri
Abstract: A bestseller of the Renaissance period, Baldassarre Castiglione’s Book of the Courtier and its subsequent English translation by Thomas Hoby treat the subject of the Court Lady, cultivate a female readership, and claim to have been written and published due to the intervention of ladies. However, the introductory materials written by the authors render the role of the Court Lady to be divergent and unclear; an ideal that is impossible to achieve, much like the ideal of the Courtier himself. As the Courtier is ultimately a vassal of the Prince, and as he intends to gain power by persuasion, so too do the books have an interconnected power relationship with the women behind their respective publications. Through this feminine grounding—that is, the yielding of accountability for the works—both Castiglione and Hoby are able to appeal to Ladies and instruct them within the bodies of their books, simultaneously affording them power and tempering it. By implicit suggestion leading to action and the mix of inflated commendation and ever-so-slight disparagement, Castiglione and Hoby are able to convey a complicated relationship between two disenfranchised groups trying to mitigate authority for themselves by both granting and withdrawing power from the other.

  • Royal manuscript patronage in late Ducal Normandy? A context for the
female patron portrait of the “Fecamp Psalter” (c. 1180)

    • Authors: Jesús Rodríguez Viejo
Abstract: The “Fecamp Psalter” is an illuminated manuscript created in the Norman abbey of the same name, around the year 1180. The psalter contains a portrait of its patron, kneeled and in a prayer pose towards the “Beatus vir” page. This person can be identified with certainty, as a high-ranking woman of the Angevin state. Her appearance, the position of her portrait in the manuscript, together with related contemporary examples of pictorial arts will permit us to shed light on her identity. The study of this artistic commission will allow us to better understand processes of patronage between individuals and monastic houses in twelfth-century Europe, as well as to approach the concepts of female self-awareness and biblical pre-figuration in medieval art.

  • Allegories of Sight: Blinding and Power in Late Anglo-Saxon England

    • Authors: Matthew Firth
Abstract: The practical necessity of sight to effective participation in Anglo-Saxon life is reflected in the lack of evidence for a prevalent culture of punitive blinding in Anglo-Saxon England.  Contrary to the practices of continental Europe, the sparse records of blindings, legal, political or allegorical, demonstrate a cultural reluctance to use blinding as punitive measure.  Yet late Anglo-Saxon law codes, histories and hagiographies also evidence a growing acceptance of the practical political expedient of blinding as a means to the deprivation of power. Law, history and hagiography each illuminate a different attitude to the practice.  From as early as Edgar’s reign there is evidence for the use of mutilation as a legal means of punishment that preserved the soul for redemption; by Cnut’s reign these laws specified blinding as a punishment for recidivists.  The histories demonstrate blinding as a political tool facilitating the deprivation of a rival’s power, a political tool granted legitimacy through the legal use of blinding.  In contrast, the hagiographies use blindings, attempted blindings and healings as tropes that evidence and bestow the power of God in opposition to political power.  These conflicting narratives demonstrate the conflicted attitude to blinding inherent in a culture that considered sight as a vehicle for power.

  • John Lyly’s Anatomy of Wit as an Example of Early Modern
           Psychological Fiction

    • Authors: Adele Kudish
Abstract: John Lyly developed the prose style that would become known as euphuism, named after the main character in his Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit (1578) and Euphues and his England (1580). The term ‘euphuism’ signifies the use of paradoxical and self-correcting language, while its spokespersons express a great deal of self-doubt and contradiction. We can conjecture that Lyly intended his ironic, detailed examination of ‘wit’ to dissect both the intellect and its often-inconsistent maneuverings, revealing a cynical view of human behavior. In this article, I re-read The Anatomy of Wit (1578) in the context of a larger body of what I call proto-psychological fiction. I argue that certain Early Modern texts, of which Lyly’s is a strong example, share tropes and motifs that indicate the author’s interest in the workings of human psychology avant la lettre, and more specifically, of a pessimistic strain of thought that is critical of self-awareness and doubtful of our ability to be guided by reason.
