  • Quand débute la Réforme en France '

    • Authors: Yves Krumenacker

  • When did the Schism begin, and why' Views on the English Reformation
           amongst Catholic polemicists

    • Authors: Katy Gibbons
Abstract: For Catholic polemicists, the Break with Rome and the establishment of the Church of England did not signal the arrival of religious truth and renewal, with a clear start date and a point of completion; rather it was a schism, a breaking from the true church. Its dating and origins were intimately connected with the moral failings and lust of Henry VIII. Marian authors were able to reflect on this scenario from the position of an England restored to Catholicism, but they were bookended by those in the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, whose explanations of the English Reformation were shaped by their own experience of displacement and dispossession. This article outlines the ways in which the ‘losers’ of the Reformation portrayed the timing and origins of England’s schism to their fellow English Catholics, and to the wider Catholic world. The potential of their narrative to puncture the myth of inevitable Protestant triumph was such that Protestant regimes in England were eager ...

  • Célébrer la providence divine. Jubilé et culture commémorative
           réformée (Genève, XVIe-XVIIe siècle)

    • Authors: Christian Grosse

  • English Evangelical Historians on the Origins of “the
           Reformation”

    • Authors: Susan Royal
Abstract: Although Luther’s protest of indulgences in 1517 is often considered to be the point of origin for “the Reformation”, first- and second-generation English evangelicals understood that origin differently. Knowing their fledgling movement needed to be grounded in history for legitimacy, evangelicals searched historical records for evidence of their movement prior to Luther’s protest. This essay examines the work of two leading historians during the English Reformation, John Bale (d. 1563) and John Foxe (d. 1587), to analyze what they made of the beginnings of the English Reformation. Specifically, it explores the place of the lollards, late medieval English dissenters condemned by the Church, in the histories written by Bale and Foxe between the 1540s and 1570. It argues that Bale and Foxe saw their own reform movement through an apocalyptic prism; reading the historical records through the light of Scripture, especially the Book of Revelation, led them to recognize the career of John...

  • Introduction: 1517, and all that: dating the beginning of the Reformation
in Early Modern Britain and France

    • Authors: Aude de Mézerac-Zanetti
Abstract: As the quincentenary of the posting of the Ninety-five Theses by Martin Luther, 2017 has been a year of commemorations, ending and crowning the Luther Decade in Germany. 31 October 1517 has come to represent much more than Luther’s public protest against indulgences, having long been hailed as the starting point of the Reformation. The anniversary spurred the publication of countless books on Martin Luther’s life, editions of his works, theological treatises, as well as a flurry of publications on memory and commemoration. It has excited interest in the beginnings of the Reformation in academia, popular culture and even businesses – witness the sheer amount and versatility of Luther memorabilia available for sale. Image 1000000000000618000005E12A55186B.jpg A case in point is the German toymaker’s production of a Luther Playmobil™ figure for the occasion (by April 2017, 750,000 Martin Luther box sets had been produced, the initial run of 34,000 having sold out in three days). Although the playset displays the official 1517 co...

  • Prologue: When did the English Reformation happen' A historiographical
           curiosity and its interpretative consequences

    • Authors: Alec Ryrie
Abstract: In 1991 Diarmaid MacCulloch famously argued that the English Reformation happened – in the face of a persistent myth which denied it. That much is perhaps now widely accepted. Quite what it was that happened naturally remains a subject of contention: too much so for a short essay such as this to make any attempt on it. Our subject here is, or ought to be, altogether more manageable. Which dates we choose to assign to the English Reformation – which was not an event, but is a historians’ imagined composite – is on one level a trivial or pedantic matter, but it has its own small degree of significance. For as decisions of framing when composing a photograph, decisions of periodisation in history do a great deal to determine what the eventual picture will be, by deciding what does and does not count as part of the story. Indeed, the main drama of English Reformation studies over recent decades has in part been one of periodisation. The English Reformation as A. G. Dickens presented it i...

  • Confessions, Covenants and Continuous Reformation in Early Modern Scotland

    • Authors: Alasdair Raffe
Abstract: This article examines the swearing of collective religious covenants in early modern Scotland. Scotland’s Covenants were public oaths in support of protestant beliefs and in favour of national and individual Reformation. Though they shared some of the characteristics of the confessions of faith found across Europe, the Covenants were written in times of crisis and focused on doctrines of particular salience at the moment of composition. The article traces the origins of covenanting in the Scottish Reformation, before examining the Negative Confession of 1581, the National Covenant (1638) and the Solemn League and Covenant (1643). Because these oaths were sworn repeatedly, and on a national basis, they propagated the idea that Scotland was in covenant with God, and that this covenant should be periodically renewed. The Covenants also enshrined a notion of continuous Reformation: a process of constant striving for reform, and of perpetual vigilance against error and sin. When Scots ag...

  • The Reformation of the Future: Dating English Protestantism in the Late
           Stuart Era

    • Authors: Tony Claydon
Abstract: In late Stuart England, print genres such as histories and almanacs were happy to put a precise date on the Reformation, but 1517 was not widely memorialised. This was partly because the complex history of English Protestantism meant that different dates for its founding could be canvassed (the arrival of Luther's ideas in the 1520s, Henry VIII's 1532 break with Rome, the reforms of Edward VI's reign (1547-1553) and Elizabeth's ecclesiastical settlement (1558-1599); and because this ambiguous past was used as a weapon in contemporary religious battles. While Anglicans tended to point to the settlements under Henry and Elizabeth as their ideal moment in the past, Dissenters and the more radical wing of the church celebrated the reforms of Edward’s rule and efforts by the Elizabethan puritan movement to perfect worship in England from the 1560s. These disputes first prevented a dating consensus emerging, and then convinced those trying to unite English Protestantism that it was counte...

  • Legitimizing Rhetorics: Jewish “Heresy” in Early Modern Italy

    • Authors: Bernard Dov Cooperman
Abstract: Granted the weakness of Jewish institutions for social control, arguments for freedom of thought and criticism of authority could flourish relatively unimpeded within the community. Communities did use decrees of excommunication to expel individuals for various types of actions—especially those related to economic competition and taxation or crossing halakhic marital rules and other such malfeasance. But when it came to matters of belief and doctrine, demands to “excommunicate” deviants seem to have remained largely rhetorical, at least until the seventeenth century. What is remarkable is not only the open rejection of any claims to universal authority but the justification for freedom of thought, the importance of individual rational ethics in self-perfection, the rejection of blind credulousness, and the use of historical critical methods to establish the authentic Jewish tradition.
