    • Abstract: “How can a thing that is, essentially, nothing—a space where something else should be—have such pull?” asks Emily Sinclair in “Searching for the Duck Hole,” featured in this issue’s nonfiction. It’s a question that resonates throughout the stories and essays in these pages—characters and writers alike bump along and against the walls of estrangement, investigating the spaces created by silence, absence, and longing. In Michael Byers’s “City Light,” set in 1950s-era Seattle, a girl forges her lonely way into young adulthood largely without her family’s support. In Karin Lin-Greenberg’s “Touring,” the paths of a friendless college student still grieving her mother’s death and a washed-up, nearly unrecognizable former ... Read More

  • City Light
    • Abstract: A few years after the fact, Brigid happened across a letter about her mother, Genevieve, and what to do about the whole situation. The letter was from Brigid’s aunt Frances to all the other aunts and uncles, meant to be passed from one to the other. “Only rarely have we touched on the effects of all this on her children,” the letter began, though if we were outsiders, looking at the thing abstractly, we would lament the effect on the children equally with Genevieve’s unhappy condition. Bad table manners can be corrected more easily as they mature, and social pressure increases their desire to be equal to social situations. The children’s habits of inconsideration toward others, rudeness, flagrantly insulting remarks ... Read More

  • Touring
    • Abstract: The parents always love me. I walk backward and wind clumps of parents and their sixteen- and seventeen-year-old offspring through our tree-lined campus and explain why they should spend sixty thousand dollars a year sending their precious progeny to Willton College. I know what they want to hear—our rising ranking in U.S. News & World Report, Princeton Review declaring that our dorms look like palaces, the job and graduate school placement rate, the scholarly successes of our esteemed faculty. Inevitably, some dad, some wannabe comedian in pleated khakis and a tucked-in polo says, “So, what are you going to do with that philosophy degree, Jessica? Will you sit around all day and think?” They chuckle, and their ... Read More

  • The Chevrolet Girl
    • Abstract: Every Sunday, the same: Mass at ten, the second row. They lingered just long enough to shake Father Frank’s hand, compliment the choir, nod at their neighbors. Jodi knew what her parents were up to. She did the same thing at school. Turned in her homework. Said ma’am and sir. Wore shorts under her uniform skirt when her thighs were blistered. Everything normal over here, people. After Mass, they would cross the bridge to Juárez to eat at El Herradero, where the owner would escort them to the center table. Her mom people-watched while her dad talked politics with Señor Martinez. They shared a disdain for Democrats that deepened when the dnc railroaded Nixon out of office the month before. Jodi wasn’t sure if Señor ... Read More

  • Lights
    • Abstract: Yael’s mother, visiting from Caracas, is talking about everyone who has moved away. Avital. Shoshana. Marmelstein the balabusta (imagine her selling her house and handing over the keys). They’ve left alone or with their families, for school or work or for their children’s good, an exodus slow enough that when Yael’s mother goes to the Hebraica, she can’t shake the feeling that everyone’s around the next corner. Yael pictures the Jewish school on the Hebraica campus that she attended as a child, how through the windows and past the community center buildings the fog would curdle against the mountainside and make it look like it was smoking. She’s been in Chicago for seven years now, and still she remembers the way ... Read More

  • Silent Impacts
    • Abstract: Two midwestern villages—I’ll call them Arno and Morgan—face off against each other across the banks of the Bainbrydge River. Their feud is old and largely undefined, like the one that exists between my uncle Harry and cousin Al or the one in my nine-year marriage. The air between the two villages is clear and cloudless, but the water at their feet is tainted from years of industrial contamination and good old-fashioned septic waste. I stand on the riverbank and try very hard not to think about sewage. I am there to clean up the groundwater.I’ve studied the groundwater contamination in Arno for over seven years as an environmental consultant, and it’s finally time to start remediation. My job this particular day is ... Read More

  • Searching for the Duck Hole
    • Abstract: My mother started calling me about a year and a half ago. She is in her late eighties and suffers from cognitive decline, so she does not remember that we haven’t had a relationship for more than twenty-five years. Despite her memory struggles, she figured out my home number and leaves messages on it. The first one, transcribed to include her pauses, looks like poetry:The love you! slays me, seduces me. It’s all I ever wanted. My husband says, “You can make a phone call from an iPad?”Around the time Mom started calling, I was working on a short story that takes place in Dallas, the city in which I grew up and where Mom still lives. In the story, I write about the duck hole. That’s my private name for a ... Read More

  • Taxi Sutra
    • Abstract: The Reality is one and the same: the difference is in name and form.Six weeks into our three-month stay in India, a taxi ran over my eight-year-old son’s foot. He was fine, but I will never forget the sight of Kellen’s shoe pinned beneath the tire. The day had started quietly. By that June morning, we had lived a month and a half in the tiny town of McLeod Ganj, high up in the Himalayas, where ten-thousand-foot peaks stood garbed in snow even in mid-summer and the walk to town for groceries required a perilously steep ascent. We left the cottage around nine that day, hoping to beat the sun, and, for the first time, we turned to go downhill toward Dharamsala, rather than up to McLeod Ganj. Recently, we had learned ... Read More

  • Locked in Plasma
    • Abstract: I don’t like it when I have nowhere to go. I feel caged in. I can’t breathe. I can’t get rid of the wiring in my stomach. My dance teacher used to say, breathe, if you don’t breathe, you die. I’m reminded of other lives. When emotions bottle up, I can’t speak. I see myself in a cell, pushing against the walls, locked in plasma. I can’t get out. I scream in silence. They took my voice away when they came for me in the amphitheater. It was filled with students. I never wavered. I saw them at the top of the stairs, an army of shadows. They chilled the warriors, anonymous faces hiding behind their uniforms. They had orders. All went dark.I kept going, not interrupting the session, or was I pretending to be calm. Then ... Read More

  • Four Short Essays
    • Abstract: At the next table, the waiter quickly and clumsily, with some theatricality, debones with a spoon and knife a branzino (an ocean-going sea-bass that sometimes enters brackish and fresh waters), and presents, with a smile on his face, a plate of tattered and torn flesh to the astonished diner, who says nothing.                        : :The mountain, which measures time by the retreat and advance of glaciers, eclipses from our view the far valley’s meadow disheveled by thaw.                        : :Trying to give stern and honest advice to a student, he quotes John Cage, quoting Max Jacob: Standing in line gives one the opportunity to practice patience. To which the student replies, “But what can I do to fix the ... Read More

  • In the Far South the Sun of Autumn Is Passing
    • Abstract: Wallace Stevens’s stanza xxxii is quoted here as stanza xi. The title of the poem is a line from Stevens’s “Like Decorations in a Nigger Cemetery,” and it intends to force a dialogue with his poem and with my childhood surrounded by the casual use of “that word.” My poem also contains borrowings from Jean Toomer’s “Beehive” and Rachel Eliza Griffiths’s “Black-and-White Dusk at Limantour Beach,” engaging them in dialogue with Stevens, and with ... • Chaïm Soutine, Flailing Trees, and: “Chaïm Soutine, Le
           Vieux Moulin 1922-1923”
    • Abstract: He arrived in Paris in 1913 (though some sources say 1912) at the age of 20, though again, some say he was 19 or 21, having the liberty of not knowing quite when he was born, and went to stay with friends at La Ruche, with its affordable studio housing built from the ruins of the most recent Universal Exhibition.Soutine was a great reader of Montaigne, who claimed that the world is constantly churning, never achieving an equilibrium. This is what allows Soutine’s landscapes to avoid the ethical error of so much European and North American landscape painting of the last several centuries, voraciously appropriating through a perspective that implicitly argues one legitimate point-of-view only that only one person can ...
