  • Bees
    • Abstract: They arrived in late April. According to the beekeeper we’d brought out to the house, they’d found a way into our laundry room wall and had been building a hive in there for some time. Our laundry room is attached to our garage—it’s a separate outdoor structure, removed from the main house by about twenty yards—and that’s where they’d decided to build their home. My wife, Alexis, was the one who first noticed them, circling in a small cloud near the back fence of our yard, right next to the laundry room window. When she got stung a few days later, taking a small basket of hand towels and dishcloths out to the laundry room, we called up the beekeeper and had him come out and take a look. ... Read More

  • Transparent
    • Abstract: The years from 2007 through 2011 blur in my memory. Some moments I can barely make out—they’re like streetlights on a rainy night, no more than gauze in the dark. Others interlock, firm. These are the years my daughter and I lived in Oklahoma, where we landed after brief stops in three other states after my release from rehab in 2006. I was, after all the moves and miscalculations, still mind wandering and restless. My daughter was four. Halfway between Dallas and the Oklahoma border, there’s a 7-Eleven on the northbound side of i-35 in Denton, Texas, where we now live. After my daughter’s birth in 2002, there were nights I sat in the rocking chair next to her crib, understanding that ... Read More

  • Nadyne and the Theory of Everything
    • Abstract: When Galileo Galilei’s affirmation of Copernican heliocentrism was initially censured by the Catholic Church, it was deemed “formally heretical” because it was “contrary to the true sense and authority of Holy Scripture.” It was not until 1992 that the Catholic Church conceded the movement of the earth around the sun. Even now there are those who reject heliocentrism, groups that seek to prove our solar system a geocentric one, using the work of Newton and Einstein in order to affirm the scriptures. The nature of God and the nature of gravity have long been at odds. I have been thinking about gravity and what it means to defy it. Gravity, like God, demands reverence, that thing that keeps us fixed upon ... Read More

  • The Lost Land
    • Abstract: After three weeks of traveling, I finally arrive back at the place where I was born. By the boarded-up gas station, I see a man my own age. “I grew up in that house over there,” I say, pointing to the vacant lot of weeds. He doesn’t say a word. “You and I were best friends. We played Cowboys and Indians every day, we searched for Nazi treasures in the abandoned gravel pit. Don’t you remember?” He doesn’t answer. “We climbed Mount Everest together, we bicycled the Sahara, we patrolled the Great Wall of China . . . No, I’m just kidding. I’ve never seen you before in my life.” Then his face lights up. “Yes, I remember now. It was a fantastic time. For years I’ve carried around this emptiness inside, a great ... Read More

  • What She Is
    • Abstract: Long white-blonde hair in front of the white clapboard chapel. Her body almost invisible in the afternoon sun except for tan legs, bare feet, the straps of sandals held in one hand like an invitation. A small valise at her feet, weathered, blue, hardly big enough for a change of clothing. He noticed her before he saw her thumb, out of place the way she was in front of Phillips Chapel. One thing for a white man who had business there, but a white girl with white hair standing on that corner in front of the church, white in the daylight, he wasn’t wrong to pause, to question, just for a moment, before deciding the answer wasn’t important. Her thumb pointing the opposite direction of the way he was driving. His ... Read More

  • Saint Mutt, and: Saint Mylar Balloon
    • Abstract: Back off a little when I have a fresh missalette in my mouth I tend to get erratic hey that was in good fun! Most times I adore you I move to put my paw in yours we bow our heads together to ask the Lord for one more thing. It’s nice! This hymn is for sleeping. How about here? Or here yes better closer to the floor register see you in a little . . . did you hear that? There’s a bird in my mouth I mean my mind did you hear that too? This carpet so good so soft. God is love and beef liver together the scent of moist garbage on the wind through the open window the sound of many cars being chased away. Don’t trust the world or do—go ahead why not—to operate on its own accord. I guess food comes from somewhere water ... Read More

  • Mackerel, and: Maid Poem #2
    • Abstract: We were shown how to eat with our hands, how to pick the meat between bones, how to feel for the small slivers hidden in fish, how to gather food with four fingers and push it into our mouths with our thumbs. There were no knives at our table, those were kept in the back kitchen, with the maids. They ate when we ate. They stayed back when we went to church, to tend to the chickens, to care for the youngest, always sick. We knew their names, the smell of their skin. Shame I can’t name them now. My mother remembers them all and each, which maid was paired with which child and which one (only one) would come with us when we went to the mountain to ride horses in the fog. ... Read More

  • Motherhood after Virginia Woolf
    • Abstract: Like a cut-out figure, I fear folding, flattened, into ghost. The poem your voice is speaking, balloon-like, caught up and gone so soon. All shadows, these emerging monsters to whom we grow attached. So miraculous. So frail. Are we maggots or stars, trembling clear sky? Perpetually we make a mark. That is your face. That is your ear. This hope hung in a glass cage is my heart. Stop being one thing, start being another. Dawn, dusk, death, and mother. When you see a bruise, you say the brussels sprout burst. Blood vessels through our vegetable roots. For so long we shared it, threaded blood through boles of giant weeds, past blackbirds taking wing. Together, we asked what we were made of. Knife, mirror ... Read More

  • Editors’ Page
    • Abstract: It’s something we almost all lament at some point in adult-hood: how ephemeral summer seems compared to its endless stretch when we were young. Now, before May even ends, the calendar fills with summer plans and obligations until September arrives, the season fleeting, diminishing, disappearing in the rearview almost as quickly as it appeared on the horizon. Fittingly, this issue’s stories and essays are also situated in spaces of transience, people caught between one place and another, between now and then. In Emilie Beck’s “What She Is,” a man picks up a young woman—from “all over” and “here and there”—hitchhiking across the southwest, and soon a misunderstanding between them erupts into a ... • Twelve Partial Truths and One Certainty, and: Double Acrostic for William
Wordsworth, and: [The Truth Is I’m Too Impressed by Wealth]
    • Abstract: This is the line in which I save no one from a terrible death. Tomorrow we will discover a new city growing out of what is left of the old city. When a film is taken, that film passes over the world like a light. I know the hideous secret you think of when you read the phrase hideous secret. In some dimension you are covered in a gelatinous ooze & it is unnatural to think otherwise. Your brain is self-aware & believes itself to be the entirety of your body. This is the line in which I take from you everything you have ever known & give it back to you, renewed. Before you reach your house you must first extinguish the fire. What you want ... Read More

    • Abstract: It wasn’t his fault. No one said it was, not even the insurance companies. The Ford Taurus had tear-assed onto the highway and rammed into the side of his tractor-trailer. Teddy remembered the noise of the car’s arrival, the unbelievable cosmic smack of it collapsing itself into crumpled metal. The noise fell into an unreal silence in his skull while he headed his truck to the breakdown lane. After he set out flares, he walked back, with traffic swarming on one side, to peer inside the wreck and see more blood than he knew people had in them, two horror shows of men in mangled poses. He yelled, “Hey! Hello! You okay?” and they didn’t answer. He stood on the edge of the road, calling 911, trying to sound ... Read More

  • Voices Underwater
    • Abstract: That summer we hardly ever left the pool. We dropped stones and shells into the water to make a real ocean floor. We pinned fern leaves to our hair. We dove and shot across the surface like mermaids on the run, squeezing our legs into long tails. Some days the pool was Atlantis, or the lake of Excalibur, or the River Styx, or the Sargasso Sea and its sunken ships. All the magical places we’d read about in sixth grade that year. Other days it was a sacred spring. We were two vestals, hooded priestesses collecting water for the temple under a clear blue sky. Sometimes we pretended you were the priestess and I the inductee. You poured water over my scalp as I tilted back my head and promised to be devoted ... Read More

  • Daughter Tongue
    • Abstract: Winner of the 2017 AWP Intro Journals Project in Nonfiction, selected by Benjamin Busch On Guam, snakes hung from power lines. Hungry for birds, they stretched from grounded pole to live wire and died instantly. My mother was walking when she saw them, snakes on a wire, draped in loose coils, like they fell from the sky. She used to imagine Guam crumbling in an unremarkable disintegration, a cloud of sand, diffusing at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Waves like hands, peeling the beach apart, splitting the island in two. The ocean a mouth, an esophagus. For some Americans, living in the Western Pacific is a suspension of disbelief, the uninterrupted dream of coconut palms and cerulean ... Read More
