  • Fidelity to Fact
    • Abstract: April—every day a new flower scent to try to identify; every day warmer—and I'm thinking yet again about a perennial conundrum. Amid distraction, and amid so much information, how to hold in mind the many present threats to ecological balance' How to remember all we have lost of the beyond-human world, all we might lose' In her essay "Metamorph," Anya Groner talks about the chytrid pandemic that's devastating frog populations, and how her twin sister, a biologist, has devoted her life to studying it. "Even after Maya explained her research," she writes,it took me a long time to understand the stakes. Though amphibian decline had gotten a decent amount of press, to laypeople like me, the scientific rhetoric ... Read More

  • Largeness and Light
    • Abstract: I have lived in North Carolina for thirteen years. I know because my daughter is thirteen now and was only three months old when we moved here. A handy mnemonic device.I teach at a public university in this recently embattled state. Somewhat to my own surprise, I have grown to love teaching. A favorite image employed by my own favorite teacher, the biographer Walter Jackson Bate, was the opening of a window in a closed room. He saw it as a great metaphor for education, for the way that learning can help us escape the small and locked rooms of ourselves. He pointed out this metaphor in the poetry of Keats, which makes sense, as the orphaned Keats would have passed an obscure and unpoetic life were it not for his ... Read More

  • Blood
    • Abstract: MY DOWNSTAIRS NEIGHBOR, BART, who's been a Marine and served in Afghanistan and still has a Semper Fi sticker on the rear window of his truck, says I have to get back on the bus. He means the Number 3 outbound. I stopped riding the bus after seeing my ex-fiancé, Todd, on it two mornings in a row, last Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, I thought he was probably taking it to get his teeth cleaned—his dentist's office is on South Temple. But then he was on it again Friday morning, and nobody gets their teeth cleaned two mornings in a row, not even people with really dirty teeth.Every morning this week I've been pounding on Bart's door at 7:30 so he'll drive me to work. He answers in his green plaid pajama pants and a ... Read More

  • The Descent
    • Abstract: MATT HAD HOPED THEY'D HAVE THE PIER AND STRIP OF SAND to themselves, but parked beside the path was a camper with Louisiana plates. Like they didn't have enough sand and water there, he thought, lifting the styrofoam cooler from the truck bed. He went down the path, Tanya trailing with the towels and tablecloth and sunscreen, behind her Ethan with his plastic rod and reel and long foam noodle. Going first because of snakes, Matt claimed, but it was more a chance to kick away what he didn't want a ten-year-old to see. There was always something, it seemed—a condom, a drug vial, wrapping papers. Things a child might pick up and ask "What is this'" But today there was only an empty liquor bottle, which Matt tossed ... Read More

  • Metamorph
    • Abstract: My sister Maya and I were twelve when my father brought home the white frog. "Albino, aquatic, and clawed," he announced triumphantly, "indigenous to Sub-Saharan Africa." He held up a clear baggie, a makeshift balloon filled half with water and half with air. A pale amphibian bumped the invisible walls. We'd had pet frogs before, plucky Kermits that zinged from wall to wall and raced their own reflections, but never had we witnessed a specimen so odd. Maya and I could see right through the newcomer's skin to its black pumping heart, silvery intestines, and delicate arched ribs. Tiny daggers—cornified from the hardened flesh of its toes and essential, I soon learned, for ripping apart meals—protruded from three of ... Read More

  • Another Life Initiative
    • Abstract: JOSIE AND I WERE LYING ON THE KITCHEN FLOOR in the middle of a particularly animated free-association session when she prompted me with a tricky one-worder: "Concerned.""Stingy tourists, lack of sales, Polar Possibilities going bust," I answered, then prompted her with something easier, what should've been a softball: "Us.""Concerned," she said. "Very concerned."Right then the sound of footsteps on the driveway made us pause. Personally, I couldn't have been happier for the interruption. Josie, on the other hand, still had some free associating to get out of her system."Polyamory," she said.I sighed. "Excuse to cheat and ruin marriage and probably contract herpes."She laughed, but not at all in the way of someone ... Read More

  • Required Reading: Kiki DeLancey's "A Good Six-Two"
    • Abstract: I was talking to a friend the other day, and she said she was trying to remember the last time she had been feeling hopeful. "Then I remembered," she continued, "it was before the election."Much has been said about the recent election, and a lot more still will be—history, felt at the most personal level for so many of us, will refuse to become history. For me, the election has changed my interaction with characters, in other people's stories and in my own. When I published a story—one set in the Obama years—after the election, I asked a question I had not asked while working on it: for whom did the heroine cast her ballot' The question prompted me to look up the data. The character lives on the West Coast now, but ... Read More

  • A Good Six-Two
    • Abstract: HE WAS BIG, BUT FRAGILE. If he'd straightened completely he'd have been a good six-two. A good tall man with large shoulders and a broad back, he was a big size in the old way, what we used to call "country big"; his body expressed physical work, the bearing aloft of bales and crates, combined with a diet of abundance, bowls of potato chunks and plates of hot meat, squash and beans from the earth out back, sliced bread and cut-up tomatoes and helpings of carrots and beets in big pieces that had been put up in this kitchen last fall, enough for the family of three, spooned and stacked on the china plates that had been bought piece by piece from the grocery store over forty-eight weeks in 1965.The fragility is hard ... • The Whitest Girl
    • Abstract: FROM DAY ONE, TERRY PRUITT WAS TOO GOOD and too white, the whitest girl we'd ever seen. Most of us at Yama Catholic Girls High School were some version of Hispanic, but Terry was whiter even than those whose families were high-class from whatever island we came from, and so were blessed with Spaniard instead of Indo or plantation genes and shot out of our mothers' bellies as pale as little Europeans. There were other Anglo girls of course, but they lay in tanning beds, wore too-dark makeup shades that made them glow orange, studied Spanish, and flashed gold hoops to blend in. But Terry Pruitt didn't even make an effort. Her skin was so pale it was transparent, and we could see the web of veins underneath, including ... Read More

  • I Want to Feel Close to You When I Read
    • Abstract: As I began reading the last story in a slim, unusual book, I wanted to feel pure admiration for the writer—her willingness to write slowly and with precision about the small, the mundane, so as to render single thoughts startling; her blasé humor; her audacity in the face of plotlessness; her casual use of esoteric words alongside common and so-called lowbrow expressions. I wanted to sit with her book in my lap; to study more closely the passages I had marked, in order to better understand their potency; to unpack, sentence by sentence, the unusual suitcase of thoughts, ideas, and images she had so beautifully put together. But the purity of my admiration was diluted by my memory of discovering the book on ... Read More

  • True Courses: Starting from Sayre
    • Abstract: Found poems from the March 26, 1998, edition of the Dallas Sectional ChartOnce, when I was practicing cross-country flights during my pilot's training, I flew from Salisbury, Maryland, to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. If I was on course, I would fly right over Havre de Grace, Maryland. I had never been to Havre de Grace, but I knew from my aeronautical chart that the town bordered the Susquehanna River and had a highway bridge and a railway bridge, with another highway bridge a few miles north and a dam a few miles past that. If I had adjusted my course correctly to account for the wind, I would see those bridges on the right side of the airplane. And I did."Starting from Sayre" is a tribute to the dying art of ...            Tacoma / Rainier
    • Abstract: To immerse, unfold, sink in—we are in the car and on the way to Mount Rainier National Park to inhabit a campsite by the White River and take a day hike up to the glacier on its northeast side. The requisite duffle bag stuffed with books is among the gear: Dorothy Wordsworth's journals; collections of poems by Lorine Niedecker and R. F. Langley; Gary Snyder as a mountain guide, Phillip Whalen as a mountain companion; and another book or two—certain that I would not read all of these, but feeling rich with the vast promise of this company in those moments between and after walking and hiking and fire-tending and cooking and dishwashing and splashing cold water on the face and washing the hands, when the time to read ... • Outside Is the Ocean
    • Abstract: THE MAN OFFERS HIM A DRINK. Gin and tonic' Bourbon' Cognac' Stewart isn't much of a drinker. "Whatever you're having," he says, standing in the living room, awkwardly, looking over the harbor. He can't quite remember what the guy said he does for a living—something with investments, some kind of advisor or banker. Clearly he's loaded. The apartment has floor-to-ceiling windows and a Steinway. Stewart wishes he'd paid more attention when the guy told him his name. Tizak or Tazak, something with a z and a k. Stewart was too surprised to register what he actually said. Stewart had been checking him out from across the room for at least half an hour, until the banker disappeared in the crowd, then bam! he was right ... Read More

  • The Rocks Took Charge
    • Abstract: What heaven do stones have' What heights do they possess as they float through'Many of us look for unique stones. We have shelves of stone, design rock gardens, or live in homes of river rock. The Chilean poet Pablo Neruda shared this love for stone. He wrote about ordinary stones and precious stones, and the matrix of metal that might one day become a ringing bell. Gems, basalt, minerals; he so loved the world of matter that the inside of a lemon was a cathedral of crystals. It is evident in his titles, The Stones of Chile, Sky Stones, and Isla Negra—where he built his home, a place of ocean sand, using the black stones of the region. After years of observing the earthworks at Machu Picchu, Neruda constructed his ... Read More
