  • A Conversation with Andrew Blanchard
    • Abstract: You grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and now live in Spartanburg, South Carolina. How have these places and others you’ve lived in or visited influenced your work?I didn’t appreciate the Gulf Coast until I had some distance from it. For the brief time that I lived away from the South, I missed it in a far more visceral sense than just being absent. I trek back and forth from South Carolina to Mississippi and Louisiana quite regularly, and a camera is always within reach. I make it a point to meander the blue highways, much like William Christenberry. There is no shortage of subject matter within the South’s diverse landscape and environmental variance. The overlaps where one place edges or blurs into ... Read More

  • An Uncertain Sound
    • Abstract: You know, the Bible says there, “For [if] a trumpet give a uncertain sound, how would you prepare yourself for battle?” There’s a battle a’coming. And it says make a joyful noise unto the Lord, and that’s all I’m trying to do, make a joyful noise to the King of all kings. The light was as bright as winter against the white walls. The pew cushions didn’t match. An industrial blue carpet covered the floors, and a promotional calendar from the Haysi Funeral Home on the wall by the door to the sanctuary announced the month: March. Frank and Geraldine headed for the far wall, where the large window behind the pulpit let in the pallid sun. On either side of the casement, the frozen faces of men and women gazed out from ... • This Bright Diorama
    • Abstract: A few years back I realized that I’d crossed a boundary, and not one I’d hoped to be crossing: I had lived longer in town than in the woods. I grew up in rural South Carolina and, despite having lived most of my adult life in cities, I’d always thought of myself as a person of rural places. It may not seem like a big deal, but it was to me. And it had kind of sneaked up on me. While I was busy working and making music and writing poems—too busy, almost, to notice—my identity had slid cityward. So when we decided on the theme for this issue, more than a year ago, I was thinking about the moment of panic I’d had and what I might do about it. What had I lost in letting myself live in town for so long? What of the woods ... Read More

  • Miss McElroy
    • Abstract: TRAVIS DIDN’T IMMEDIATELY RECOGNIZE THE WOMAN pretending to browse the shelves at the Paperback Swap. When he’d thought of Miss McElroy over the last decade—and thinking of her wasn’t so uncommon—she was preserved in amber: the young mother in a bikini and Ray-Bans, beads of lake water jeweling her delicate neck. She wore Ray-Bans this day too, maybe the same pair from before, but otherwise he had to work to see her as the woman she’d been. She reminded him of a bird losing its feathers, diminished and skittish. When the mailman opened the door and the bells clanged, she snapped around like she’d been pinched. She never glanced at Travis—not when she moved from the romance novels to mysteries to Westerns, not when ... Read More

  • A House of Her Own
    • Abstract: i stretch the stick of dough as I slide it into sizzling oil, all the while keeping an ear out for my daughter-in-law. To avoid eating breakfast, Hweiling often slips out of the house without so much as a good morning or good-bye. Her dieting and her twelve-hour workdays worry me. She places undue importance on her job.My son shuffles into the kitchen and flashes me his good-natured grin. I break a hot-out-of-the-fryer youtiao in half and sandwich it between toasted sesame bread for him. Chin-ya is busy studying the stock pages, so I sit down next to him, dip his breakfast into hot soymilk, and hold it to his mouth. He takes a bite and mumbles his appreciation. He lets me indulge him when Hwei-ling is not in the ... Read More

  • Mystic Island
    • Abstract: Six miles high and southbound, I watched the New Jersey coastal wetlands unfurling below me, a green carpet decorated with meandering blue threads of tidal creeks. And then a curious apparition slid into view—an alien handprint on the landscape, a maze in the marshes. It was a residential neighborhood where fingers of land and fingers of water interlace. Later I learned the place is called Mystic Island, although it’s not an island, and I can’t see much that’s mystical about it.Sixty years ago a real-estate developer had the idea of selling vacation cottages here, and making every parcel of land a waterfront lot. You could park your car out front and dock your boat in the back. Achieving this goal puts some unusual ... Read More

  • Postcards from Below the Bug Line
    • Abstract: For a while there, I taught in the English Department of Syracuse University, but back then it wasn’t really an English Department. It was the Department of English and Textual Studies. We had given up studying literature with a coverage model—too much of it to go over, questions of canon formation—and instead we were teaching ways of reading that could be applied to any text, literature or not. What that meant was that, say, one semester no classes on Shakespeare would be offered, while in the next semester there would be three or four, covering the same texts but each through a different lens. There would be a Marxist interpretation or a feminist one. Race would be the focus of a third, or queer theory. My ... Read More

  • The Death of the Shack
    • Abstract: I am sitting in my writing shack waiting for the storm. Hurricane Matthew has already crashed into Florida, flooded Savannah, and broken through the sea walls of Charleston—and Wilmington is its next stop. It’s pretty much the only time you see the name of my adopted hometown on a map of the country—when a storm is coming up the coast. In the early projections, Matthew looked like it was making a beeline for us, and we were briefly ground zero. I imagined the Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore standing with his microphone in front of the shack, with Missy and Isabelle, our yellow labs, barking at him, as I tried to take last-second notes on the birds hunkering down for the storm. But of course the early predictions are ... Read More

  • The Lyric City
    • Abstract: I grew up ten miles north of Cincinnati, Ohio, in a quiet suburb that once had been a small village in its own right until it was engulfed by the city’s suburban expansion. It remains, today, a collection of tree-lined streets, strong schools, and well-maintained Victorians inhabited mostly by the families of Procter & Gamble’s engineering staff and middle management. My hometown’s symbol—which shows up on everything from the neighborhood newsletter to the town’s governmental website—is a flower basket situated beneath a street sign: a little nest of cu-rated nature juxtaposed with a publicly named street—an agreed-upon word, an essential tool of urbanization.Suburbs are inherently uncommitted. They exist doubly ... Read More

  • Open Season
    • Abstract: all her life it was the “old house.” The place where the young man suddenly appeared one fall evening. Lit a fire. Made a home. You see those places from the road in that part of Georgia. The familiar T-shaped, gable-roofed farmhouse of the twenties and thirties, white-washed frieze boards and busted six-over-six paned windows along the rear sleeping porch, always with the same severe beauty that feels like an affront of some kind. When she was a child, her aunt and uncle used the house for hay storage, preferring to live in the double-wide they set up at the back of the tract farther off the main road. And so the house was an outbuilding to her, or a piece of the landscape, at least until she discovered him living ... Read More

  • Entry Cove
    • Abstract: I say entry cove in ignorance, to name the world as I can, makeshift, by a phrase that lights on the skin—entry cove, a space made in tall grass and darted through, sound enough to constitute a hideaway in a meadow. A cove is generous in definition: a sheltering bay, a cave, gap, or hollow. As I near, an animal slower and heavier than a cat slips in. Cove, because I want to follow, everything outside too loud and wrong. Here at the edge of this meadow, late summer, the goldenrod high, the sun warm and air soft, there’s a motor, compressor, something violently chewing the quiet, shredding the peace. Hard to locate its origin. Overhead, a plane tears a path into blue sky. Then comes a far train whistle I make ... Read More

  • Guilty (Country) Secrets: Maria Beig’s Hermine: An Animal Life
    • Abstract: Maria Beig, still living at ninety-six, is the startling chronicler of life in Swabia, a rural, Catholic region of southern Germany, a place of farms and rolling hills, of country fatalism and sublimated dreams. Her books capture the precariousness of women’s lives in that place. She maps their astonishing emotional territory but never resorts to sentimentality, detailing their interactions with priests and philanderers, scolding relatives and suspicious friends, stationed soldiers and half-hearted suitors. Without the labor of the National Book Award–winning novelist Jaimy Gordon and the German academic Peter Blickle, Beig’s work would be inaccessible to American readers.Twenty years after its German debut ... • ¡Hablamos!
    • Abstract: the first time emi and frida traveled to the United States, it was to appear as paid participants on a Jerry Springer–style, Spanish-language talk show filmed in Miami. ¡Hablamos!, Univision called it. Emi hadn’t known anything about it until one day when Frida came screaming into their shared bedroom.“¡Ganamos!” she yelled. We won!“¿Ganamos qué?” Emi replied. On a lark, Frida had entered them both into a contest, the grand prize being an all-expenses-paid, three-day trip to film an episode of ¡Hablamos!“¿Qué? Pero—okay,” Emi said. “Si lo dices.”That summer, Americans listened like classic gringos to “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” and Emi and Frida, her best friend, sang it aloud on the flight from Mexico City. They mimed ... Read More

  • Kayla Sees the Lowcountry
    • Abstract: Living in lowcountry South Carolina feels at times like a dream. As a native Texan, my natural surroundings have been almost exclusively composed of parking lots, sprawling highways, endless flat fields, and the occasional howling winds of a passing tornado. I made my way to Beaufort with the intention of recovering, so to speak, from the chaotic bustle of life in Dallas. And in this gorgeous, quiet, and remote part of the country, I recover. The history of the lowcountry, with all its violence, resilience, and resistance, permeates every aspect of daily living. The past is present. My intention with this series, which is part of a larger body of work titled Kayla Sees America, is to hold what was and what is in ... Read More

  • Fountain Girls
    • Abstract: There are two exits out of Fountain, Colorado. The northern exit also acts as an entrance to Fort Carson, the Army base located in the foothills of Cheyenne Mountain, just south of Pikes Peak. Fort Carson is “The Best Hometown in the Army—Home of America’s Best!” A large portion of the Fourth Infantry Division is stationed at Fort Carson, and it has two of its own slogans: “Deeds Not Words” and “Steadfast and Loyal.” The base website welcomes incoming Fourth ID soldiers, promising, “The assignment will be challenging yet personally and professionally rewarding.” Someone told me once that the Fourth ID has had the most casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq. I don’t remember who; I won’t remember when. The southern exit ... Read More

  • A Willow and the Moon
    • Abstract: it was once a sanatorium high up in the mountains. My mother worked there. In the summers I woke with her early and took the wooded trail near our home. She brought us breakfast, usually some bread with cold jam and butter, and halfway up the slope we found a spot with a view and rested. In the valley there was the town and the distant river. On some days we could see the train come up from the city, blowing smoke into the sky. South of this was our house and the horse farm my father was employed by. Sometimes I could even see my father cross a paddock; I recognized his strange gait, from when a horse kicked his hip before I was born.He came from a family of farriers. The house was one we rented from a wealthy ... Read More
