  • From Thebes to Camelot: Incest, Civil War, and Kin-Slaying in the Fall of
           Arthur’s Kingdom
    • Abstract: Because the legend of Thebes enjoyed great popularity in France when many Arthurian texts were being composed, critics have long sought to unearth connections between Camelot1 and Thebes. To date, however, they have turned up only a few isolated parallels.2 In the early twentieth century, scholars investigating the Arthur-Mordred relationship sought after, but failed to find, significant borrowing from the story of Laius and Oedipus;3 subsequent editors and critics have all but dismissed the influence of Theban legend upon Arthurian tradition.4 The standard source-studies of the relevant Arthurian works, such as the Mort Artu, do not record the influence of Theban narratives.5 More recently, M. Victoria ... Read More

  • Memories, Dreams, Shadows: Fantasy and the Reader in Susan Cooper’s
           The Grey King
    • Abstract: Remember that quotation' ‘It is what you read when you don’t have to, that determines who you will be when you can’t help it.’ Arthurian fictions have always had designs on their audiences, and nowhere is this more self-evidently and self-consciously true than in fictions for young people. For more than two hundred years, children’s Arthuriana has enlisted the pleasures of Camelot to help determine who readers would be ‘when they couldn’t help it.’ However, while popular wisdom and pedagogical theory have consistently asserted the link between reading and self-formation, understandings of the specific mechanisms and goals of that process have shifted, in ways that have contributed to the broader ... • There and Back Again: A Malorian Wild Man’s Tale
    • Abstract: In Malory’s Morte d’Arthur, Lancelot and Tristram form, in many ways, two sides of the same Arthurian coin. They are consistently referred to as the two best knights, and are considered to be nearly equal in terms of prowess and chivalry. Their similarities even extend to the structural parallels between their many adventures, although their actions demonstrate that they prioritize their chivalric values differently. Placed side by side, Lancelot and Tristram often present different answers to the same scenario: when faced with conflict between their knightly duties and faithfulness to courtly love, for example, Lancelot consistently chooses courtly love (and, more specifically, Guinevere) over his knightly ... • The Questing Beast and the Noise of Adventure
    • Abstract: The Questing Beast, Thomas Malory writes, ‘was a full wondirfull beyste and a grete sygnyfycasion; for Merlyon prophesyed muche of that byeste’ (565.35, 566.1).1 After an early sighting by Arthur, the Beast interrupts stories in the Tristram books, where Palomides has taken over the hunt from Pellynor. In these rare and well-spaced appearances, to which Malory usually dedicates only a few sentences, the monster enters and then leaves the other narratives. Typically this hybrid of a lion, leopard, hart, and serpent (an English giraffe')2 stops to drink at a well, where his barking momentarily quiets, and when a knight arrives in pursuit, the pair rush off. Although earlier accounts, such as the Perlesvaus and the ... Read More

  • A Dark Mirror: Death and The Cadaver Tomb in The Awntyrs off Arthure
    • Abstract: The Awntyrs off Arthure is a text divided and dividing, haunted no less by the shadow of disunity than by the gruesome ghost at the Tarn Wadling. Virtually every critic who writes about the text has felt obligated to treat, in some way, with what Virginia Lowe called its ‘episodic nature and … apparent thematic disparity’ as well as with its success or failure as a work of art in light of this.1 The central critical question, then, is of how we are to interpret the anomalous structure of the poem and the effect of that structure upon the work’s core themes. A.C. Spearing’s emphasis of the connectedness of the Awntyrs and his description of the poem as a diptych has significantly influenced ... Read More

  • Medievalist Comics and the American Century by Chris Bishop (review)
    • Abstract: There is no good reason why we should have had to wait this long for a book-length study of medievalist comics. After all, comic books have been an immensely popular genre throughout the twentieth and into the twenty-first century. By 1940, for example, Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby had sold fewer than 25,000 copies. In the same year, Superman comics were selling more than a million copies every month! Chris Bishop, thus, helps close an obvious lacuna in the study of medievalism. His monograph provides a rich fabric of contexts (political, social, biographical) for the seminal signposts in the history of American comic book medievalism. He shows Prince Valiant (1937) and Green Arrow (1941) as products of a ... Read More

  • Founding Feminisms in Medieval Studies: Essays in Honor of E. Jane Burns
ed. by Laine E. Doggett and Daniel E. O’Sullivan (review)
    • Abstract: Where has feminism gone' This question is relevant both within and beyond the academy, and the answer in one arena invariably impinges upon the other. Ideally, academic and mainstream feminism are mutually reinforcing: second-wave political movements gave rise to women’s studies programs, even as women’s studies courses introduce many students to feminist viewpoints that guide their perspectives beyond their undergraduate careers. Conversely, in our current ‘postfeminist’ era, feminism is frequently construed as a past political movement that has fully achieved its goals. Within academia, feminist studies can be similarly dismissed as a throwback to a previous, superseded era of scholarship. It is no surprise ... Read More

  • The Auchinleck Manuscript: New Perspectives ed. by Susanna Fein (review)
    • Abstract: This collection of essays provides an impressively comprehensive ‘state of the field’ view of scholarship on the Auchinleck Manuscript (Edinburgh, NLS MS Advocates 19.2.1). It gathers together some of the foremost authorities on the manuscript, and combines their contributions with those of younger and emerging scholars, covering a large variety of approaches to the manuscript and its textual and visual contents. The volume’s approach is admirably set out by Susanna Fein’s introduction: appropriately to the study of such a vast and collaborative undertaking as the Auchinleck MS, Fein documents the many scholars whose past and current work has illuminated our understanding of the manuscript over the forty or ... • God and the Gawain-Poet: Theology and Genre in ‘Pearl,’
‘Cleanness,’ ‘Patience’ and ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by
           Cecilia A. Hatt (review)
    • Abstract: Cecilia Hatt’s new study of the Gawain-Poet focuses on theology and genre, two perennial topics of scholarship on the four anonymous Middle English poems found uniquely in British Library MS Cotton Nero A.x. Critics have long explored what these poems might say about a range of theological issues, including penance, devotional images, predestination, and the active life. Hatt begins from a broader theological premise, one that she assumes a late-medieval Christian writer would have shared with his audience: that creation is a gift of God, and that human action is properly understood as a response to that initial gift. In her view, this theology explains two important features of the poems. One is their ... Read More

  • Games and Gaming in Medieval Literature ed. by Serina Patterson (review)
    • Abstract: Focusing on the ‘tension between games and the real world,’ this volume presents nine inquiries into games played in medieval life, literary representations of games, and, most intriguingly, texts that are themselves games. It contextualizes these investigations with an introduction by Serina Patterson and an afterword by Betsy McCormick that do the heavy lifting of identifying common themes and outlining how game studies might evolve as a field. In her introduction, Patterson usefully lays out three threads that run throughout the essays in the volume: games and the problem of definition; games and earnest; and games and reality. The first of these points out the continuing difficulty of defining ... Read More

  • The Prose ‘Brut’ and Other Late Medieval Chronicles. Books Have Their
Histories: Essays in Honour of Lister M. Matheson ed. by Jaclyn Rajsic,
Erik Kooper and Dominique Hoche (review)
    • Abstract: The Prose ‘Brut’ and Other Late Medieval Chronicles is a lovely book. It quietly argues, through its collection of high-quality essays, for the importance of chronicle traditions to the understanding of medieval literary history and the development of Medieval Studies as a discipline, from Early Modern antiquarian interests to the present day. The volume honors the great scholar of, among much else, English Brut chronicles, Lister M. Matheson (1948–2012), and its contents evolve from papers delivered in his memory in 2013, at the International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo and the International Medieval Congress in Leeds. As its editors underscore in their introduction, ‘exploration of … ... Read More
