  • Restless Arthur: Medieval Romance Still on the Move in Popular Media
    • Abstract: In their study of King Arthur in Popular Culture, Elizabeth Sklar and Donald Hoffman include a short essay by Norris J. Lacy, who offers some reactions from his limited experience as a consultant for several Arthur-based, Anglo-American-produced television documentaries. Lacy is a preeminent Arthurian scholar and co-author of the Arthurian Encyclopedia (1986) and the Arthurian Handbook (1988). He makes the common sense point that, although he was consulted on the script as a kind of editor, the filmmakers did not take his suggestions for preserving literary and historical accuracy: 'It struck me as odd and very unfortunate,' he reflects, 'that a [film] production company would lavish so much attention (and money) ... • Sacramental Unity for a Saracen: Malory's Conflicted Knight Palomides
    • Abstract: Constituting a full third of Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte Darthur, 'The Book of Sir Tristram de Lyons' at first appears too long, its episodes disconnected. Readers enter a maze of repetitive events: masked knights jousting at every turn, jealous King Mark making yet another attempt on Tristram's life, and characters who enter for a few scenes never to appear again. In her abridged edition of the Morte, Helen Cooper admits, 'Reading the Tristram complete … can begin to seem itself like an endless digression.'1 Nevertheless, by focusing on the kingdom of Cornwall, 'Tristram' offers parallels to the problems brewing at Camelot, thus illumining the rest of the Morte. Further, scholars have noted pattern and purpose ... Read More

  • 'It Is Mainly Just That They Are Irish': T.H. White's Commentary on
Twentieth-Century Anglo-Irish Tensions in The Once and Future King
    • Abstract: As he drafted what would become The Once and Future King, Terence Hanbury White wrote letters to Leonard James Potts and his wife, Mary. Potts acted as White's tutor during his undergraduate study in the 1920s at Queen's College, Cambridge University, where White wrote a now-lost thesis on Malory, and White and the Pottses eventually became family friends. Among other topics—both medieval and modern—the correspondents discussed how White was to work through the interpolation of his interest in Irish material and culture with his appropriation of the Arthurian legend. In his letters, White's interest and personal investment in Gaelic (as White terms it) material as it occurs throughout the tetralogy becomes ... Read More

  • Closure and Caxton's Malory
    • Abstract: Many scholars have commented on the beauty of Sir Ector's threnody for Sir Lancelot near the end of Le Morte Darthur. This famous last speech of the work praises Lancelot's deeds and notably elides the less-admirable and even destructive behavior of its subject. The scholarship has not discussed, however, the distinct possibility that Malory may not be the author of this speech—that, instead, the speech could be Caxton's. Its assurance of Lancelot's nobility is part of the larger project of Caxton's edition to provide a model of noble behavior for the noble lords and gentlemen who, Caxton claims, prompted his edition. We may question Malory's authorship of the threnody itself, primarily because we do not have this ... Read More

  • Marie de France: Poetry ed. by Dorothy Gilbert (review)
    • Abstract: With her edition and translation of Marie de France's poetic works, Dorothy Gilbert takes her place amongst the poets who give new form to stories, like those who Marie mentions in the Prologue of her Lais, 'who told them, made them known, / wished, for remembrance, to record / adventures, stories, they had heard' (ll. 36–8). As Marie herself likely knew, translation is a thankless task: literal renditions fall flat, unbridled poetic élan rings false. Gilbert's verse translations, however, strike a subtle balance between faithfulness to the original and readable, performable verses that resonate with nuanced rhythm, sound, and sense.Bringing to life the works of a twelfth-century woman writer for students and the ... • Elf Queens and Holy Friars: Fairy Beliefs and the Medieval Church by
           Richard Firth Green (review)
    • Abstract: Richard Firth Green has devoted much of his considerable career to a deep immersion in the fairy lore of medieval England. The result of those sustained efforts, this monograph signals a field change in the association of fairies with religion that has profound implications for our understanding of medieval culture and literary texts. Green's essential claim is that fairyland is a 'contested site' between the official and unofficial cultures of the Middle Ages (p. 2). A brief Introduction summarizes the problems of taxonomy, the Celtic hegemony in fairy studies, and the politics of folkloric beliefs that situate this study both with regard to what it does (describe the political significance of fairyland) and with ... • The Art of Vision: Ekphrasis in Medieval Literature and Culture ed. by
Andrew James Johnston, Ethan Knapp, and Margitta Rouse (review)
    • Abstract: This collection examines Western European premodern ekphrasis, understood broadly as a verbal description of the visual. The work thus advances our understanding of visuality and culture, and so participates in conversations within medieval studies dating back at least to D.W. Robertson, E.H. Gombrich, and Edwin Panofsky. Informed by an understanding of the visual within the verbal (see, for example, works by W.J.T. Mitchell and by Mary Carruthers), recent scholarship has been exploring materiality, visuality, the body, and image. In this twelve-chapter collection, each essay offers a fresh, rigorous reading of ekphrasis, with Middle English examples most prominent. Four chapters focus on Chaucerian texts and two ... Read More

  • Chaucer on Screen: Absence, Presence, and Adapting the Canterbury Tales
ed. by Kathleen Coyne Kelly and Tison Pugh (review)
    • Abstract: Among the countless collections of essays on Chaucer, Chaucer on Screen is as brilliant and entertaining as any I have had the pleasure of reading. Each of its contributors is an accomplished medievalist, but what is most remarkable about these seventeen essays is their authors' mastery of contemporary cultural theory and their equally deep knowledge of the history, technologies, and critical appraisals of film and television. The volume's ambition is to 'foreground Chaucer's importance' in alignment with, but also over and against, 'medievalism'—which the editors define as a 'specialized genre of adaptation' where 'the vast store of medieval culture' has 'always already been appropriated, borrowed, stolen ... • Religion in Britain from the Megaliths to Arthur: An Archaeological and
Mythological Exploration by Robin Melrose (review)
    • Abstract: Anyone writing about religion in prehistoric Britain faces an enormous challenge given the paucity of evidence on which to base one's conclusions and the frequently indeterminate nature of such evidence as does exist. Nonetheless, that is exactly the task Robin Melrose has set for himself in Religion in Britain from the Megaliths to Arthur. For Melrose, the legendary and semi-mythical figure of Arthur is not just a chronological marker for the end period of his study, but rather is central to his whole consideration of religion in prehistoric, Roman, and early medieval Britain. Melrose, a former senior lecturer in English and Linguistics at the University of Portsmouth and the author of a previous book on The ... Read More

  • Fragments for a History of a Vanishing Humanism ed. by Myra Seaman, Eileen
           A. Joy (review)
    • Abstract: Many scholars have recently been energized by the posthumanist turn—a determined, scholarly effort to counter our anthropocentric tendency to see agency and desire as uniquely human. This turn has generated some anxiety. As ecocritics or object oriented ontologists investigate perspectives ranging from nonhuman biological life to everyday inert objects, some critics worry that posthumanism menacingly invites literary critics to abandon the human entirely.Happily, such critical nervousness has inspired a lively and fascinating collection: Myra Seaman and Eileen A. Joy's Fragments for a History of a Vanishing Humanism. The volume provides a platform for cutting-edge medievalists intent upon linking humanist concerns ... Read More
