  • Editor's Note
    • Abstract: In the summer of 1977, Appalachian poet and teacher Albert Stewart extended an invitation to writers throughout the mountains. His request was a simple one, and yet it filled a void in the region, which had finally begun to acknowledge and understand that it had a literary tradition and history as important as any other. Stewart wanted a group of burgeoning writers to meet at the Hindman Settlement School at the Forks of Troublesome Creek in Knott County, Kentucky, for several days of intense study with himself and several of his fellow mountain literary lions: Harriette Simpson Arnow, Billy C. Clark, and James Still. The gathering was so successful that it happened again the next year, and the year after ... Read More

  • The First Ride
    • Abstract: She heard her mother's voice hoarse, with fright pressing it into a flat stream of sound, "You'll have to hurry." And then her husband's call, "I've fin'ly got him saddled," while Rebel the big gray stallion neighed and pawed by the porch steps as if he too knew the joy of the long wild ride that lay ahead. Her husband came to the door, and her father turned slowly away and then back to her so that she saw his old face, puckered into pale lines of fright and sorrow. She smiled at him and saw thoughts written into his eyes plain like words. He was loath to have her go and feared for her the long ride. She laughed to show him that she was not afraid, but her tongue seemed heavy and useless for words so that she made ... Read More

  • What I Know About Scott County, Tennessee
    • Abstract: After growing up in the Appalachian region, I lived for twenty years in New York City. During my time there, many of the things people dread most about big cities happened to me: I had my apartment burglarized and my pocketbook picked; I was mugged by knife-wielding thugs. But the only time I ever had a gun pointed at me was in Scott County, Tennessee. My Aunt Okey Jo and Uncle Thurman Mullins lived in Scott County. She was a school teacher, and he was a store manager for one of the timber companies working the mountainous Tennessee forests. Uncle Thurman grew up a few mountains away, near Wise, Virginia. After serving in World War II, he didn't want to go to college, and he didn't want to dig in the earth or under ... Read More

  • Third Sunday Dinner on the Grounds, July 1976
    • Abstract: Yolanda and Mona watched the cars line up along both sides of the street. Not just the normal neighborhood cars, the newest of which were at least two or three years old, but brand new cars that gleamed in the sunlight and still smelled car-lot fresh and sported black glistening tires that hadn’t seen much dirt yet. Two big yellow church buses full of out-of-towners pulled into the lot. And a long, silver charter bus with air conditioning and a bathroom careened along the blacktop until it came to a high profile stop right in front of the church as though it were a limousine, and fifty-five strangers from Atlanta strutted off the silver steps. A guest choir. People milled the street and talked to ... Read More

  • Hard-to-Reach Back Parts
    • Abstract: I can’t use a curling iron without thinking of my mother. As a girl I had stick-straight hair, and so for special occasions—Easter Sunday, kindergarten graduation, school pictures—Mom would sit me down on the living room floor between her knees, plug in the iron, and start giving me a look to equal the occasion. Even now, if you see me with curls, you’ll know that I think the situation calls for a little something extra. Mornings like this one, I look at myself in the mirror and see a flash of that girl I was, even though my curled hair is spiked with grey and I have lines on my face.I never curl the hard-to-reach back parts without wishing Mom could do it for me. What a soothing pleasure (occasionally punctuated ... Read More

  • Harm
    • Abstract: A truck passed on the highway a mile away with the long hum of a tuning fork. She thought she had heard an airplane, but now the sky was silent. She often found herself listening for the rough drone and stutter of an aircraft in trouble, since the plane crashed on Mt. Olivet. They had seen the flash from the bedroom. It's just lightning, Harm said. Next day she heard all the boys had parachuted out over South Carolina, long before it hit the ridge. The wreckage was scattered over the very part of the mountainside where she was born and grew up.Two dried nettle stalks held their seed-pods like yellow Christmas balls. It was surprising to see them in the woods; they usually plagued the baulks in open fields. Enough ... Read More

  • Big Girl
    • Abstract: How did this happen'" the woman asks me so soft I have to lean up in the chair to hear. "When did it start'" A good question. But when does anything start' How far back do you have to go' I was a big girl, now I'm a big woman. My life has been different because of it. Many avenues of opportunity are closed off to a big girl. You can't be a majorette, for instance. You can't be a cheerleader. You dress and undress in the shower stall at gym class. You stand in the back for group pictures. If you ever get elected to anything, it's always treasurer. I never had a date in high school. Boys didn't even notice my big breasts because I was big all over, like the Pillsbury Dough Boy, remember him' On the packages of pizza ... Read More

  • Abide With Me
    • Abstract: Aplaque, a photo, a cardboard likeness. Well, they will find none of those things here. Oh, they exist, and I have them still, but they are packed away in the other house, buried with the life I have now escaped, as surely as Liam has escaped his.I cannot honestly say that Liam loved the mountain house. Perhaps he did, for all I know, but he was never here very much. I was trying to please him when I chose it, but he may have let me buy it as much for the tax advantages as to spend time in this place. "But you grew up in these hills," I said once, as he looked down from our limestone terrace at the newly-landscaped ridges studded with what he called "stone and glass excrescences," built by the other summer people. ... • Who Owns This Land
    • Abstract: Who owns this place where I live. Oh, I have a legal title to it. My name is duly recorded on a deed duly registered in the processes of human commerce and law. But this is only one kind of possession. Perhaps it is the least important possession.Consider the other inhabitants on my acres. There are the cardinals that winter here, appear at my feeding station, build nests in the spring, dart with flashes of scarlet brilliance through the greenery of summer or the white snows of winter. They are worried by no boundary lines designating ownership. There are the mockingbirds that seek out the highest limbs from which to pour forth their liquid dazzling variety of songs and calls, and the plump mourning doves that run ... • Power and Obedience: Restoring Pacifism to American Politics
    • Abstract: We were four brothers, sons of the Kentucky hills who came of age in lockstep with the escalating war in Vietnam. In 1964, my oldest brother volunteered for the Air Force, following an ancient tradition in which, for the sake of education or economic advancement, men from the working classes risk our lives to fight the wars of the rich. He nearly died in an aborted rescue mission in the mountains of Vietnam. My second brother received deferments that carried him through the war. My third brother volunteered in 1971, as the war was winding down. In that same year, on my eighteenth birthday and well in advance of receiving my draft lottery number, I filed with the Nelson County, Kentucky, Selective Service Board as a ... Read More

  • Voices from Troublesome Creek: Forty Years of the Appalachian Writers'
           Workshop
    • Abstract: At the 2017 Appalachian Studies Association Conference, Appalachian Heritage editor Jason Howard convened a roundtable discussion to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the Appalachian Writers' Workshop. Joining him to discuss their experiences at the forks of Troublesome Creek were Sandra Ballard, nonfiction writer and editor of Appalachian Journal; Amy Clark, writer and teacher; Silas House, novelist and teacher; and Amanda Jo Slone, fiction writer, teacher and editor of The Pikeville Review. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity. The workshop has offered emerging and burgeoning writers the opportunity to stand and to study with some of the region's premier literary talent, and so I think of ... • Let Evening Come
    • Abstract: I have a garden that is a tangle, not of sweet peas, but of sunflowers and black-eyed Susans and echinacea spilling over a bank on the patio. As I sat out there last evening sipping my wine and watching the sky, I was jubilant. Marriage equality at last, after legal battles spanning forty some years. Love is love is love. But not two weeks ago, in a church in Charleston, a young man’s act of rage took the lives of nine people. Another church in Richmond, Virginia, and some man banging the walls with a metal pipe while he shouted racisms at the congregation. And Thursday morning, a black church burned down in Charlotte, North Carolina. I remembered a line from Voltaire about garden-minding and some ... Read More

  • Hesper
    • Abstract: This love story starts the way a lot of them does—springtime, sap's arising, boy and a girl don't know no better. Starts with Daddy bringing home this boy from town. I knowed C. L. Edwards from school but hadn't seen him since I quit sixth grade. That durn teacher, she wouldn't let me alone, always after me to raise my hand and answer, got onto me if I was the last one in and left the door standing open. Last time I done that, she said, "Hesper Penland, was you born in a barn'" Well, I tell you, that fired me up good. I looked that old heifer dead in the eye and I said, "Yes, ma'am. That's why ever time I hear a jackass bray I get homesick. So that's where I'm a-going now. Home!" C. L., he set in the back with the ... Read More

  • Karo
    • Abstract: Grandma thought our old dog Karo had gone mad. Karo was real old, and she frothed around her mouth some, but I knew she wasn’t mad. I tried to get in on the talk about Karo, but nobody listened to me. Grandma told Uncle Delmer they might have to shoot Karo. I thought it was something they’d talk about some more, and I went to the front yard to play. But then I heard a gunshot, and I ran back, and there was Karo flopping on the ground by the coal pile, shrieking and crying and trying to pull herself along with her front legs. Delmer had shot Karo in the hindquarters with his .38 pistol. I wasn’t but nine but I knew that if he had to kill her he ought to of tied her to a post and took a steady aim at her head ... Read More
