  • Approaching Lorca’s Viaje a la luna: Structural Patterns, Symbolic
           Concatenation, and El público
    • Abstract: During his twelve months in New York and La Habana, Lorca was busy with a number of different literary projects. He completed or revised previous works—Los títeres de cachiporra, Amor de don Perlimplín con Belisa en su jardín, “Oda al Santísimo Sacramento del Altar”—and he wrote new ones: most of the poems included in Poeta en Nueva York, Viaje a la luna, and a good portion of El público. In the fall of 1929, in Manhattan, one of the groups of Spanish speakers that Lorca fell in with was made up of several Mexicans, among them the artist, designer, photographer, and filmmaker Emilio Amero (Maurer and Anderson 174–81, 271–79). Amero would be to some extent the instigator of the composition of Viaje a la luna ... Read More

  • “Fish and Trees Are Alike”: The Movement of Identity in Kirmen
           Uribe’s Bilbao–New York–Bilbao
    • Abstract: “Reality is a stage that we construct.” “Quit philosophizing and pass me the bolts!” It is now well known that literature has played a pivotal role in the formation of nations both in their psychological development as “imagined” political communities (Anderson) and in their discursive construction as places with common histories, languages, and national literary canons (Ríos-Font). Yet it is also well known that not every national literary canon has the same reach on the global level. In Spain, for instance, it is more difficult for writers of Basque, Catalan, and Galician literature to gain international attention than it is for authors who write in Castilian.1 On the one hand, as Basque ... • Resisting Invisibility: Lesbianizing the Public Space in Isabel Franc’s
           Emma García Stories
    • Abstract: A boom of the last decade, but also with roots in the Spanish transition to democracy, the detectivas of the novela negra now populate a once male-only genre, producing female detectives that continue to break with traditional stereotypes and captivate a crime fiction-hungry audience. This literary phenomenon, known as femicrime, where a female detective is used to examine the socioeconomic crisis, crime, violence, and/or issues of identity and gender from a woman’s perspective, has now firmly established itself in the literary market as a credible variety of the detective genre in Spain.1 The beginnings of the femicrime phenomenon in Spain date back to 1979, when the first female hard-boiled detective ... • Microscopy, Theatricality, and the Making of Cultural Consensus in the
Short Fiction of Santiago Ramón y Cajal
    • Abstract: When Andreas Vesalius set out in the sixteenth century to explore the human body, his observations conclusively disproved Galen’s views on human anatomy and confirmed that the latter had likely never dissected a human corpse. For a nexus of reasons, including Roman legal strictures, anatomical knowledge was previously inferred from the examination of other primates and assumed to apply to the human body. Insisting on direct observation as the source of knowledge, Vesalius made of anatomy an epistemological spectacle for a community of observers in which the theatricalized display of the dissected body would appear to produce objective knowledge, or, as he put it, to provide “as truthful and complete an ... • The Vanguard of the Atlantic World: Creating Modernity, Nation, and
Democracy in Nineteenth-Century Latin America by James E. Sanders (review)

    • Abstract: James Sanders’s thorough and engaging exploration of republicanism, modernity, and nation is at the vanguard of scholarship on nineteenth-century Latin America. For more than 150 years the idea that civilization sprouted in Europe and had to be transported to America defined the scholarly paradigm for understanding modernity in Latin America. Many Latin American intellectuals and politicians have likewise largely adhered to this interpretive framework. Yet, building on the work of scholars like Florencia Mallon and Peter Guardino, Sanders presents us with a distinct model for locating and understanding democratic modernity and its impact on nation formation throughout the century. Rather than a set of ... Read More

  • Between Two Worlds: The autos sacramentales of Sor Juana Inés de la
           Cruz by Amy Fuller (review)
    • Abstract: Amy Fuller shows how Sor Juana’s autos sacramentales and their loas provide a unified statement on the question of Christ’s mayor fineza, that is, his greatest display of love for humankind. This statement, ultimately, is that Christ’s greatest gift was to have died in order to save humankind, although, as Fuller demonstrates, the autos allow the playwright to explore other finezas and how they relate to this final sacrifice. She also shows how Sor Juana connects this theological question to Spain’s imperial project of expansion and evangelization in the Americas. In the process, Fuller counters the current tendency to view Sor Juana primarily as a subversive figure. The religious dramatist that emerges from ... Read More

  • Hybrid Identity and the Utopian Impulse in the Postmodern Spanish-American
Comic Novel by Paul R. McAleer (review)
    • Abstract: In this book, Paul McAleer establishes the connections between comedy and the themes of human identity and utopia. He first locates the beginnings of humorous writing in Latin America in nineteenth-century editorials, which became costumbrista satirical portraits and novels. However, one could also point to the novelistic genre, with works such as Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi’s El periquillo sarniento, first published in 1816. Along with the contemporary Latin American comedy writers McAleer lists (all of them men), one could also add Roberto Bolaño, Fernando Iwasaki, and of course, many women writers, including Rosario Castellanos, Ana Lydia Vega, Griselda Gambaro, Luisa Valenzuela, Rosario Ferré, Silvina ... • Aurality: Listening and Knowledge in Nineteenth-Century Colombia by Ana
           María Ochoa Gautier (review)
    • Abstract: As the author alerts us, the project that resulted in her book, Aurality: Listening and Knowledge in Nineteenth-Century Colombia, began with a different purpose—as a study of popular music in Colombia during the middle decades of the twentieth century. But as Ana María Ochoa Gautier started to examine the data, she tells us, she found that an earlier substrate of intellectual grounding required attention; moreover, her research into these matters coincided with the emergence of sound studies, treating sound as “a field of theorization” (207), and this field seemed to offer a fresh and rewarding perspective. As a consequence of these shifts in the agenda, Aurality is a book about speaking and listening, about ... Read More

  • Anxieties of Interiority and Dissection in Early Modern Spain by Enrique
