... Read More

  • Between Clinical Writing and Storytelling: Alfonso de Santa Cruz and the
Peculiar Case of the Man Who Thought He Was Made of Glass
    • Abstract: In the spring of 1576, Alfonso de Santa Cruz, a physician from Valladolid, wrote a letter to King Philip II, informing the monarch of a groundbreaking book he had finished writing the previous summer. Spain, the doctor promises, will benefit greatly from the publication of the manuscript, as it addresses "la cosa más necesaria y más olvidada, … que es de curar melanchólicos locos, furiosos, insensatos y casi brutos, cosa de que jamás persona a dado en España ni fuera della de la manera que yo e hecho." Pointing out the importance of having such a book circulate among the kingdom's physicians, Santa Cruz asks the king for financial aid, and requests royal permission to use the title of "médico y criado de Vuestra ... • Modernism and Its Merchandise: The Spanish Avant-Garde and Material
Culture, 1920–1930 by Juli Highfill (review)
    • Abstract: Deep philosophical questions, aesthetic experimentation, and radical politics all worked their way into the European historical avant-garde in ways that we are still thinking through today. Those caught in the maelstrom of European modernity were simultaneously amazed and perplexed by new technologies that facilitated greater access to industrially produced cultural forms and products. One hundred years ago, increasing numbers of urban citizens looked to cinema, radio, and the popular press to figure out how to be modern, and the acquisition of a seemingly endless stream of new products was a central part of this modernization process. New fashions, cosmetics, cameras, gramophones, typewriters, appliances—not to ... Read More

  • A Delirious Theatricality: The Question of Authenticity in Four Poems by
           Virgilio Piñe
    • Abstract: The work of Cuban author Virgilio Piñera (1912–1979) is often understood in terms of its negativity. He was referred to among the Orígenes group, which coalesced around the literary magazine of the same name in the 1940s and 1950s, as "la oscura cabeza negadora" (García Chichester 233). In Lo cubano en la poesía, Cintio Vitier expressed his horror at finding in Piñera's poetry "[una] espantosa existencia sin esencia" (338). Ana García Chichester speaks of his "self-definition through negation" (232). Piñera opposed many things in his writing, but in a series of poems he wrote in 1957 and published in Casa de las Américas in 1961, the reader finds a positive declaration in favor of personal authenticity. The four ... Read More

• Alfonso X's Imagined Mediterranean Empire: Shipwrecks, Storms, and Pirates
in the Cantigas de Santa María
    • Abstract: Concurrent with the creation of a new Military (Maritime) Order dedicated to the Virgin in 1280, the Order of Santa María de España, and the Siete Partidas, in which Alfonso attempts to create and adapt a unified code of maritime law, the Cantigas de Santa María offer a glimpse of how Alfonso X and his court perceived and conceived of the space of his imagined empire. Together these works present the conceptual rhetorical framework of Alfonsine political and cultural expansion, serving his efforts to maintain economic sovereignty over a newly acquired coastal frontier, and ultimately his struggle to expand his imagined Mediterranean empire. In the Cantigas, the king's concept of imperial space is intimately ... Read More

  • Parables of Coercion: Conversion and Knowledge at the End of Islamic Spain
           by Seth Kimmel (review)
    • Abstract: In sixteenth-century Spain, scholars were faced with a set of intellectual challenges that informed their changing ideas about orthodoxy, cultural hierarchies, and political authority. These challenges were motivated by the forced conversions of Jewish (converso) and Muslim (morisco) inhabitants, the Spanish conquest and colonization of the Americas, and the fostering of Catholic orthodoxy. Scholarly engagement with this record of coercion—a key word in the present book—has ranged from marveling at the hypocrisy of Spanish politics to celebrating a one-dimensional Spanish identity. Declining to contribute to this continuum of reductionist visions of "Inquisitorial Spain," Seth Kimmel instead demonstrates how ... Read More

  • Nineteenth-Century Spanish America: A Cultural History by Christopher
           Conway (review)
Read More

  • Autobiographical Writing by Early Modern Hispanic Women by Elizabeth
           Teresa Howe (review)
    • Abstract: This timely study encompassing li(f)e-writing by women in Spain, Portugal, and Mexico during the 300 years from roughly 1395 to 1695 is long overdue. It offers a panoramic view of both religious and nonreligious female writers whose literary production spanned a variety of genres including memoir, diary, notarial document, relación de servicio, and letter or epistle. The introductory chapter is a profound meditation on what counts as autobiographical writing, along with a shrewd analysis of the paradoxes inherent in any attempt to write the story of one's own life. The five chapters that follow include three devoted to a single figure each (Santa Teresa de Jesús, Catalina de Erauso, and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz) ... Read More
