  • An Interview with Brian Kim Stefans
    • Abstract: The first time I read Brian Kim Stefans’s most recent book of poetry, “Viva Miscegenation”: New Poetry (Make Now Press, 2012), I was sitting in an airport terminal in full view of someone who kept glancing at me with a puzzled look. It only occurred to me much later that seeing “Viva Miscegenation” splashed in large red font across a book cover is probably a disconcerting experience. Situations like that sum up much of Stefans’s work: it causes moments of discomfort, stemming from a difficulty in determining whether the humor is targeted against you or for you, or perhaps both or neither. A common criticism leveled at poets such as Stefans who experiment with electronic and digital technologies is that they ... Read More

  • Erotohistoriography and War’s Waste in Pat Barker’s
           Regeneration Trilogy
    • Abstract: No man likes to think he’s sliding in on another man’s leavings.Pat Barker, RegenerationLike a Wood’s lamp in the hands of a forensic investigator, Pat Barker’s late-twentieth-century trilogy of historical novels—Regeneration (1991), The Eye in the Door (1993), and The Ghost Road (1995)—throws a peculiar light on the residua of past sex. Set in Edinburgh’s Craiglockhart War Hospital, in London, and on the Western Front during the later years of World War I, Barker’s trilogy scrutinizes the effects of total mobilization on sexual intimacy. As the war encroaches on almost every aspect of public and private life, nearly subsuming the latter into the former, sex, too, bears the mark of public catastrophe; it is no ... Read More

  • The New York School, the Mainstream, and the Avant-Garde
    • Abstract: At times, your disinterestedness may seem insincere, to strangers.Frank O’Hara’s “Personal Poem” (1959) has long been a critical fulcrum in studies of his poetry, from Marjorie Perloff’s foundational Frank O’Hara: Poet among Painters (1977) to Oren Izenberg’s Being Numerous (2011). And the discussion inevitably turns to O’Hara’s report of a conversation with Amiri Baraka: “we don’t like Lionel Trilling / we decide, we like Don Allen we don’t like / Henry James so much we like Herman Melville” (Collected Poems 336). The usual way to read these lines is to say that O’Hara documents a divided literary culture. In naming figures known for their associations with the mainstream Partisan Review (Trilling) and the ... • Burden of the Visionary Artist: Niyi Osundare’s Poetry
    • Abstract: Scholarship on the poetry of the Nigerian writer Niyi Osundare continues to privilege the social and political content of his work, in addition, of course, to his fascinating appropriation of the techniques of indigenous Yoruba poetry. Introducing Osundare’s first published collection of poetry, Songs of the Marketplace (1983), Biodun Jeyifo identified the poet’s grand theme as the dispossession of the masses and, more specifically, of the rural producers (xi). In a perceptive and relatively early appraisal of Osundare’s poetry, Aderemi Bamikunle draws attention to the themes of “social and political corruption, maladministration and mismanagement, deprivations and oppression suffered by the masses, concern with ... • The Ethnicization of Veteran America: Larry Heinemann, Toni Morrison, and
           Military Whiteness after Vietnam
    • Abstract: To think about (and wrestle with) the full implications of my situation leads me to consider what happens when other writers work in a highly and historically racialized society. For them, as for me, imagining is not merely looking or looking at; nor is it taking oneself intact into the other. It is, for the purposes of the work, becoming. To the astonishment of book critics, in November 1987, Larry Heinemann’s Vietnam War novel Paco’s Story (1986) won the National Book Award for Fiction over Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987). When Heinemann’s name was announced during the black-tie event at Manhattan’s Pierre Hotel, the audience of authors, editors, and booksellers was silent at first, caught off-guard by the ... • Contemporary Poetry and the Matter of History
    • Abstract: In Archaeopoetics: Word, Image, History, Mandy Bloomfield excavates new layers of inquiry at the site of one of the most generative grounds for twentieth- and twenty-first-century poetry: the recovery of a fragmented past. Identifying the ongoing significance of what Ezra Pound described as the “poem including history” to post–1960 poetry, and the continuing influence of the revisionist historiography of the 1960s and 1970s on artists and writers, Bloomfield examines how contemporary poets use the resources of the visual page to foreground embodied, material, and nondiscursive encounters with marginalized, traumatic, or irrecoverable histories. She traces this “material turn in contemporary historicist poetry” (4) ... Read More

  • Accessing the Network Imaginary
    • Abstract: Recall, for a moment, the choice that Neo faces in The Matrix: take the red pill, and he will see reality in all its pain; take the blue pill, and he can return to the illusion of urbanity that is soothing, if banal. For Anglophone scholars who came of age in the 1990s, the key texts of critical aesthetics relentlessly taught us to take the red pill. Postmodernism, or, The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism (1991) represented the culmination of Fredric Jameson’s theory that postmodernism is the realm of disenchantment and paranoia, the samsara to high modernism’s nirvana of difficulty. Likewise, Guy Debord’s The Society of the Spectacle (1994) taught us to see a public sphere riddled with hollow images hiding the ... Read More

  • Rethinking Rupture
    • Abstract: Just three years before Nicole M. Rizzuto published Insurgent Testimonies: Witnessing Colonial Trauma in Modern and Anglophone Literature, Danny Boyle directed a remarkable spectacle that kicked off the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. In a one-hour performance depicting Great Britain’s modern history, a model village from some prelapsarian rural fantasy (complete with Maypole and singing children) gave way to a scene of pandemonium: an influx of hundreds of people flooded the stadium as model factory chimney stacks and other icons of the industrial revolution arose from the stage. This homage to British ingenuity and mechanical dominance transitioned into a minute of silence for the dead of World Wars I and II ... Read More

  • The Great Bengali Novel in English
    • Abstract: One of the many intriguing features of Neel Mukherjee’s Booker–short-listed The Lives of Others is its hybrid genealogy. A Bangla- and English-reading purveyor of the novel form could trace it to the flowering of Bengali fiction in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries just as sanguinely as claim its kinship with the serialized, multiplot roman familial penned by George Eliot, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Anthony Trollope, or the disintegrating families made rich and strange in Henry James’s fiction. The Sanskrit word upanyas, widely used as a synonym for “novel” in Bengali and other North Indian vernaculars, was reputedly first used by the renowned educationist Bhudeb Mukhopadhyay to describe a ...
