Read More

  • Introduction: Looking Back and Forward
    • Abstract: Lourdes Casal is one of the most important figures in contemporary Cuban history and one of the most difficult to categorize. It is impossible to discuss the relationship between Cubans and Cuban Americans, and between Cuba and the United States, without being aware of her contributions. And yet because she was a woman, and moreover a black woman with Chinese heritage, and not just that, but a radical queer woman, and because she wrote both prose and poetry, devoting herself equally to scholarly work and creative work, she hasn't received the level of appreciation that she deserves. Especially in this moment of renewed relations between the United States and Cuba, it is imperative that Lourdes Casal be part of the ... Read More

  • On the "Shock" of Diaspora: Lourdes Casal's Critical Interdisciplinarity
           and Intersectional Feminism
    • Abstract: Cuban diaspora intellectual Lourdes Casal's writing imbricates theory and practice, aesthetics and politics, perspectives on the island and the diaspora, in a body of work that straddles divergent political affiliations and articulates a pioneering form of interdisciplinary Cuban, diaspora, and Afro-Latin@ studies. Casal herself transforms from exiled college student sharing the Catholic Church's critique of the 1959 revolution, to a radicalized "new left" intellectual committed to the Cuban revolution and to the struggle for "una nueva cultura."3 An advocate of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States who contributed to a shift in policy whereby exiled Cubans and their ... • Race and Reconciliation in the Work of Lourdes Casal
    • Abstract: In the thick of the media storm that followed the December 17, 2014, announcements of intentions to normalize US-Cuban diplomatic relations, The Root published a piece that circulated widely titled "Black Cubans: Restoring US Ties Is Cool, but America, Keep Your Hang-Ups About Race at Bay." Aside from relying on some problematic generalizations, the article communicated two familiar arguments: first, Cuba's racial "hangups" aren't as dangerous as the racism that plagues the United States, and second, it highlights the historically assumed primacy of nationalism over race as constitutive of Cuban identity. Moreover, the article's interviews of black Cubans (almost exclusively of folks who were not living in Cuba) ... Read More

  • Lourdes Casal and Black Cubans in the United States: The 1970s and Beyond
    • Abstract: Lourdes Casal is known mostly as a creative writer and a public intellectual, but another important aspect of this multifaceted woman was a social scientist. Casal graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from the Catholic University of Villanueva in Havana, Cuba. But her interest in the social sciences was evident since she was very young. She took psychology courses at the University of Havana. After leaving Cuba for exile in 1962, she enrolled at the New School for Social Research in New York City (now known as New School), where she completed a doctorate in social psychology. She taught psychology at the City University of New York and later at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey.Lourdes Casal's ... Read More

Read More

• Sara Gómez: Afrocubana (Afro-Cuban Women's) Activism after 1961
    • Abstract: In the 1964 documentary Iré a Santiago (I'm Going to Santiago), Afro-Cuban director Sara Gómez celebrated Santiago de Cuba's black history. She employed wide shots of the eastern city's colonial streets, cathedral, and university while explaining to her audience that "the first blacks [in Cuba] were brought to Santiago and General Antonio Maceo was born here." In doing so, she emphasized the city's rich past and Afro-Cuban contributions to the nation. But in 1964, Gómez was not only aware of Santiago's past; she also had a stake in its future—a future marked by the dynamic social changes of the 1959 revolution, including both an antidiscrimination campaign and a movement to integrate women into the workforce. In ... Read More

  • "In the general interest of all conscious women": Race, Class, and the
           Cuban Women's Movement, 1923–1939
    • Abstract: In April 1939, Santa Clara poet and teacher María Dámasa Jova gave a speech entitled "La situación de la mujer negra en Cuba" at the Third National Women's Congress. The forty-three-year-old woman of African descent argued that "the black mother suffered most because she was the mother of the marginal black child, the prostitute, the little newspaper vendor, the gang of robbers, the great number of unemployed and illiterate, and the ill-mannered black child." She went on to assert that discrimination within schools undermined social equality, as they trained black girls to become ironers rather than professionals. "When the black woman is conceded her rights and when there is a [sizable] percentage of black women ... Read More

  • The Racial Other's Dancing Body in El milagro de anaquillé (1927):
Avant-Garde Ballet and Ethnography of Afro-Cuban Performance
    • Abstract: In the gruesome closing scene of Alejo Carpentier's 1927 ballet libretto El milagro de anaquillé, two Afro-Cuban deities strangle a North American movie director who in the process of filming an Abakuá ritual has desecrated the altar. Directions for the miseen-scène insist that the characters should look monstrous and move like robots. Carpentier imagines the divinities as gigantic puppets shaped like cylinders. The filmmaker is no less fantastic—wearing a mask that doubles the size of his head.1 These physiognomies, typical of futurist theater, make the avant-garde affiliation of the text apparent. In fact, the ballet was one of the earliest outcomes of the adoption of avant-garde vocabularies by Cuban artists in ... Read More

• The Politics of Culture and the Gatekeeper State in Cuba
According to the dominant interpretation of political development and cultural policy in Castro's Cuba, artists and writers now enjoy more autonomy and freedom than ever before and more than any other group in society (Miller 2008; Weppler-Grogan 2010; Geoffray 2015).1 The literature suggests this is due to two factors: the relentless and extraordinary insistence of artists and writers on gaining more "space" to express themselves, and the capacity of La Revolución (i.e., the ... • Voices of Change from Cuba's Expanding Nonstate Sector
    • Abstract: This article summarizes the main conclusions from a forthcoming book by the authors studying the nonstate sector (NSS) in Cuba, which has a growing dynamism capable of transforming the predominant state economy (72 percent of the labor force), which is undergoing a difficult situation (Mesa-Lago, Veiga, González, Vera, and Pérez-Liñán 2018). We explain the composition of the NSS and identify four of their key groups: self-employed; usufruct farmers; members of the new nonagricultural and production cooperatives; and home buyers, sellers, and real estate agents. In each of the four groups we provide antecedents based on all the available information: size and trends, progress, obstacles, and impacts. The most ... Read More

Read More

  • Cuba, the United States, and Cultures of the Transnational Left,
           1930–1975 by John A. Gronbeck-Tedesco (review)
    • Abstract: The past few years seem to have inaugurated a transnational turn in the growing scholarship on Cuba's 1959 revolution.1 John Gronbeck-Tedesco's Cuba, the United States, and Cultures of the Transnational Left is a welcome addition to this trend. In this sweeping exploration of US-Cuban cultural and political relations, Gronbeck-Tedesco describes a shared long-term dialogue, "a larger transnational space of Left culture," constructed between Cuban and US activists (45). Yet this is not necessarily a story of unity. Gronbeck-Tedesco is sensitive to aspects of disagreement or mutual incomprehension—what he calls "gaps in the transnation" (68)—that make this a story of conflict as well as solidarity. Eschewing a ... Read More

  • Cuba's Racial Crucible: The Sexual Economy of Social Identities,
1750–2000 by Karen Y. Morrison (review)
    • Abstract: Karen Y. Morrison's Cuba's Racial Crucible: The Sexual Economy of Social Identities, 1750–2000 argues for the centrality of the family in the longue durée of race making in Cuba. Morrison's ambitious project tackles a long chronological scope, starting in the eighteenth century, moving through the illegal slave trade, the Wars of Independence, and emancipation in the nineteenth century, and concluding with the twentieth century and the Cuban Revolution. Morrison argues against an explanation of interracial family formation in Cuba, as being a simple matter of blanqueamiento, or a shared and straightforward project of whitening. Instead, she argues that "this study highlights the inextricable links between 'family,' ... Read More

hispano-cubana (1936–1942) by Katia Figueredo Cabrera (review)
    • Abstract: Katia Figueredo Cabrera's Cuba y La Guerra Civil Española: Mitos y realidades de la derecha hispano-cubana (1936–1942) broadens our understanding of the sizable Spanish community living on the island during the Spanish Civil War and at the onset of World War II. The monograph is divided into six chapters that analyze the diplomatic relationship between Havana and Madrid from 1936 to 1942, Spanish pro-right-wing organizations in Cuba, and economic factors that motivated Cuba's responses. Figueredo's work underscores the Cuban state's contradictory reactions to Francisco Franco's rebellion: initially, state diplomacy and rhetoric externally supported the Republic while remaining internally tolerant of right-wing ...
inmigratoria cubana (1902–1933) by Dayron Oliva Hernández (review)
(1915–1920) by Jorge Núñez Vega (review)
• Entrepreneurial Cuba: The Changing Policy Landscape by Archibald R. M.
Ritter and Ted A. Henken (review)
    • Abstract: The small business sector, under many different guises, often has been, since the 1960s, at the center of Cuban economic policy. In some ways it has been the canary in the mine. As ideological winds have shifted and economic conditions changed, it has been repressed or encouraged, morphed and gone underground, surviving, if not thriving, as part of the second or underground economy. Along the way, it has helped satisfy consumer needs not fulfilled by the inefficient state economy. This intricate, at times even colorful, trajectory has seen the 1968 Revolutionary Offensive that did away with even the smallest private businesses, modest efforts to legalize self-employment in the 1979s, the Mercados Libres Campesinos ... • Impossible Returns: Narratives of the Cuban Diaspora by Iraida H.
Read More

  • ¡Misericordia!
santiaguero by Olga Portuondo Zúñiga (review)
• Geographies of Cubanidad: Place, Race, and Musical Performance in
Contemporary Cuba by Rebecca M. Bodenheimer (review)
• Imaginarios socioculturales cubanos by Irina Pacheco Valera (review)
Read More

    • Abstract: Ángel Delgado, Límite continuo XII. 2009. Digital print, wax pencil and dry pastel on canvas, 39" × 78".Born in Havana in 1965, Ángel Delgado is a multifaceted and multidisciplinary artist who, since the early 1990s, has created a vast body of work around one central theme: freedom. Angelito, as he is familiarly known among colleagues and friends, will be forever remembered in the history of Cuban art for his imprisonment in the infamous Combinado del Este prison in 1990, an action that showcased the hopelessly repressive nature of the Cuban regime. In Hope Is the Last Thing That We Are Losing, Angelito staged a performance in which he defecated on a copy of Granma, the official daily of the Cuban Communist Party ... Read More
