  • Retrospective Radicalism: Politics and History in Ernest Hemingway’s
           A Farewell to Arms
    • Abstract: The world was much closer to revolution in the years after the war than it is now. In those days we who believed in it, looked for it at any time, expected it, hoped for it—for it was the logical thing. But everywhere it came it was aborted. The crisis consists precisely in the fact that the old is dying and the new cannot be born; in this interregnum, a great variety of morbid symptoms appear. While much of the early critical commentary on Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms presumes that the experiences of Hemingway’s protagonist, Frederic Henry, were closely based on those of his creator, for many decades it has been widely recognized that the two are at least as dissimilar as similar. Frederic Henry’s famous ... Read More

  • Langston Hughes on the DL
    • Abstract: Langston Hughes is still in the closet, despite the reaching hands of recent history that try to pull him out, to make him a gay icon for queer affiliation. These attempts are thwarted because Hughes was—and remains—closeted in his life and in his work. For some, he is tragically so, suggesting that had he been only a little braver, or more honest, or more progressive, or even lived a bit later, he would have outed himself. Such claims reduce his poetry to an unactualized project, reduce the erotic elements of his work to incomplete desire, reduce his life to a tragedy of life unlived, and reduce us to creating the works, like Isaac Julien’s film Looking for Langston (1989), we imagine he, with a little more ... • Orphans of our Reading: The Narrative Journalism of Foster Care
    • Abstract: About ten years ago, while preparing to teach an undergraduate course on contemporary narrative journalism, I decided to include, for the first time, Susan Sheehan’s 1993 Life for Me Ain’t Been No Crystal Stair, a book that follows a young black woman through the New York foster care system. And so, as I typically do, I went out to look at reviews of Sheehan’s work. By and large, Sheehan’s many studies of the institutional treatment of ordinary citizens—of a schizophrenic, or a mother on welfare, or here a young woman she calls “Crystal Taylor”—are very well-received. Favorable reviewers are likely to praise this Pulitzer-prize winning, National Book Award nominee with words like “tenacious” or “unsentimental,” or ... Read More

  • The Sex of Omission: Obscured Feminism in Chinua Achebe’s A Man of
           the People
    • Abstract: Omissions are not accidents.Any commentary must take off from what is silent in the text, what has knowingly or inadvertently been left unsaid. This article refutes the common assertion that Chinua Achebe does not represent women as active participants in his portrayed communities until in his fifth novel, Anthills of the Savannah (1987).1 To rethink such claims, I draw attention to the manner in which A Man of the People (1966) foregrounds a taxonomy of women contesting multiple forms of subordination. Achebe’s novel engages with women’s subordination in reverse: it demonstrates a preoccupation with leadership cultures that sprang up in response to colonization and continued into the postcolonial nation-state, but ... • The Secret Life of Stories: From Don Quixote to Harry Potter, How
Understanding Intellectual Disability Transforms the Way We Read by
           Michael Bérubé (review)
    • Abstract: The Secret Life of Stories is a short, elegantly written monograph that gives a reader the feeling of sitting in an engaging seminar with a witty, candid, and empathetic leader. It reviews literary disability studies in a way comprehensible to those new to the field, even as it invigorates and extends that thinking for current disability studies scholars. Readers familiar with disability studies will find the book’s opening contention familiar—that “representations of disability are ubiquitous, far more prevalent and pervasive than (almost) anybody realizes” (1). But Michael Bérubé contends that disability studies has gone somewhat adrift even as it revels in this ubiquity. His book reminds us that the current ... Read More

  • The Repeating Body: Slavery’s Visual Resonance in the Contemporary by
           Kimberly Juanita Brown (review)
    • Abstract: Kimberly Juanita Brown embarks upon a journey to historicize contemporary visual iterations of the black female slave body in her book The Repeating Body. She writes to address how black women have been neglected as significant subjects in narratives about slavery and its aftermath, and she assigns several purposes to this project. One of them is to “make legible the multiple enactments of hypervisibility black women cannot escape, and to highlight artistic attempts at using opacity, framing, fragmentation, and repetitions of the visual to illustrate a desire for black subjectivity that includes black women within it” (7). Brown examines the various ways in which the black woman’s body has been represented across ... Read More

  • Recipes for Thought: Knowledge and Taste in the Early Modern Kitchen by
           Wendy Wall (review)
    • Abstract: Sweeping in its scope (the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries and manuscript as well as print texts) as it is specific in its narrative trajectory, Wendy Wall’s Recipes for Thought offers a history of reading and writing recipes in early modern England. Painting with broad strokes the relationship between recipes, reading, and writing, Wall offers a portrait of early modern life in which recipe writing intersected with the era’s literate (and literary) culture, social mobility, and dominant scientific paradigms.Chapter One, “Taste Acts,” takes up the topic of print recipe (or receipt) books by such writers as John Partridge, Gervase Markham, Robert May, Charles Lamb, Patrick Lamb, William Rabisha, Hannah ...
