  • Reading Lessons in Alison Bechdel's Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic
    • Abstract: Alison Bechdel's award-winning graphic memoir, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, widely recognized for its literary sophistication, was declared one of the best books published in 2006 by The New York Times and Time magazine.1 Much of the critical analysis of the book has focused on Bechdel's treatment of her intellectual and sexual development and her relationship with her father—themes familiar in the memoir genre. What is unusual in Bechdel's treatment of these themes is that she invariably filters them through her adventures in reading; as Hilary Chute notes in her definitive analysis of Bechdel's work, "Reading is the site where almost everything happens in Fun Home" (2010, 184). The family home is a repository ... Read More

  • Little Debbie, or the Logic of Late Capitalism: Consumerism, Whiteness,
and Addiction in Mat Johnson's Pym
    • Abstract: Set at an unspecified date in the near future, Mat Johnson's Pym (2011) follows its protagonist, Chris Jaynes, an African American professor of African American literature at an unnamed liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, on an adventure to Antarctica following his failure to get tenure. Chris believes that Edgar Allan Poe's novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym (1837), reveals the existence of a geographically remote society unknown to the Western world, a revelation that has been ignored because of Poe's status as an imaginative, dissolute eccentric. Specifically, Chris is fascinated by Poe's portrayal of Tsalal, an island depicted as existing inside of the initial ice barrier of the Antarctic, yet somehow ... Read More

  • Beat Buddhism and American Freedom
    • Abstract: The Beat Generation's famous engagement with Buddhism is a paradox of rebellion and reconciliation. The Beats define themselves against the American religious mainstream of the 1950s, which promotes a belief in a God separate from and superior to humanity, and conformity to an increasingly consolidated middle-class ideal. In contrast, Beat writers such as Gary Snyder, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Philip Whalen, and others praises Buddhism for its perceived nondualistic view of reality and criticism of established institutions (Prothero 1991, 208, 216; Seager 1999, 46–61). A central element of Buddhism's appeal for the Beats is its perceived exotic difference from the United States. As Jonathan Eburne points out ... Read More

  • Forty-five Minutes that Changed the World: The September Dossier, British
           Drama, and the New Journalism
    • Abstract: September 24, 2002. Just over a year after the attacks of 9/11 and just under two weeks after US President George W. Bush implored the United Nations to take a stand against Iraq, the British Labor government released a dossier analyzing Iraq's weapons of mass destruction capabilities. On its surface, the dossier presented no new information of significance, as much of the intelligence collected was culled from United Nations reports and other public documents, though, as former Sunday Telegraph executive editor Con Coughlin writes, "British intelligence had never before been asked to produce a public document, and the authority of British intelligence had never before been called upon to justify government action" ... • Heidegger Reading Mann, or What time is It, Hans Castorp?: Death, Bildung,
and the Possibility of Time in The Magic Mountain
    • Abstract: Why do we say that time passes away, when we do not say with just as much emphasis that it arises? For man himself is a mystery, and all humanity rests upon reverence before the mystery that is man.The search for another way to approach the question of time in Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain (1924), the search for a third time, so to speak, was first prompted by Paul Ricoeur in Time and Narrative (1983–85), his broad and influential study of modernist fiction, and yet this call to action has gone largely unfulfilled, even by Ricoeur himself:The global opposition between the normal time of those down below and the loss of interest in measurements of time characteristic of those up above represents only the zero ... • Mummings, Dumbshows, Vices, and Crafts: New Work in Early English Drama
    • Abstract: Many studies of early English drama, including Gail McMurray Gibson's The Theater of Devotion: East Anglian Drama and Society in the Late Middle Ages (1989), Sarah Beckwith's Signifying God: Social Relation and Symbolic Act in the York Corpus Christi Plays (2001), and Theresa Coletti's Mary Magdalene and the Drama of Saints: Theater, Gender, and Religion in Late Medieval England (2004), have established illuminating connections between drama and religion in late medieval culture. Such connections have also been explored in a recent wave of early modern drama scholarship committed to rethinking categorical divisions like "medieval" and "early modern." John Parker's The Aesthetics of Antichrist (2007), Beckwith's ... Read More

  • Junot Díaz and the Decolonial Imagination ed. by Monica Hanna, Jennifer
Harford Vargas, and José David Saldívar (review)
    • Abstract: With two books of short stories and a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to his name, Junot Díaz is an institution. His accessible, confessional, and intellectual voice speaks for the Latina/o and Afrodiasporic communities of the Americas in a vast number of public forums. On his open Facebook page, Díaz acts as a sharp, politically attuned messenger who relays stories of the many ugly and also inspiring histories of the American hemisphere, a region that has been his fiction's focus. After the shock of the presidential election this past November, Díaz wrote a short piece in The New Yorker from the perspective of someone like so many of the readers of this review—an educator who, faced with groups of speechless ... • The Poet Edgar Allen Poe: Alien Angel by Jerome McGann (review)
    • Abstract: Beginning with Stephen Rachman and Shawn Rosenheim's 1995 collection The American Face of Edgar Allan Poe, a significant scholarly effort has been made to "restore [Poe's] writings to the cultural milieu from which they appear to have been wrenched" (xi)—a critical intervention made necessary by a long history of interpreting Poe through the lens offered by predominantly French writers, critics, and theorists such as Charles Baudelaire, Stéphane Mallarme, Paul Valery, Marie Bonaparte, Jacques Lacan, and even Jacques Derrida. Most of these people favored approaches to Poe's work that marginalized his "Americanness." Jerome McGann, however, has played an important recent role in restoring Poe to his American context ... • Possessing the Past: Trauma, Imagination, and Memory in Post-Plantation
Southern Literature by Lisa Hinrichsen (review)
    • Abstract: As the title of the book indicates, Hinrichsen's approach to southern literature revolves around a matrix of three issues: "the relationship between trauma, fantasy, and the public sphere" (2). More fully, although Possessing the Past is concerned with the way these features point to new ways of understanding post-plantation southern literature, it also works to understand the complex interplay between them and the larger theoretical models that such a relationship suggests. The book introduces this complexity early when it acknowledges the difficulty of how to "own" southern history without asserting special mastery over the past. Building from the argument Michael Kreyling makes in his 1998 Inventing Southern ... Read More
