  • Introduction: Transnational Literature at a Moment of Nationalist
           Resurgence
    • Abstract: The roundtable on "Rethinking the Transnational Turn in American Literature" at the 2017 MLA Convention in Philadelphia might have been described in immodest terms as our victory lap. Or at least it was supposed to have been. As contributors to The Cambridge Companion to Transnational American Literature, we had come together to describe our essays and reflect on the shape and future of the field. But the 2016 presidential election brought a political turn that few of us—not to mention professional pollsters—had foreseen. What would perception of a seismic shift in the political landscape mean for the transnational turn in literary studies' Although the president-elect would not be inaugurated for another two ... • Third World Problems
    • Abstract: One of the few benefits of the Trump presidency is the boon it has been to political satire. It has certainly helped Trevor Noah, brought in as a marketable "global" mixed-race figure to replace the beloved Jon Stewart, find his groove. The South African comic's recurring sketch of Trump as an African dictator demands further commentary, since it points to some larger ways of seeing in the US public sphere, both liberal and conservative, that underpin the notion of the "Third World" as the future of a decaying superpower. For Noah, Trump is "the perfect African president"—a moniker which quickly shades into "an African dictator" as The Daily Show intercuts footage of Trump's campaign speeches in October 2016 with ... • A Transnational Critical Optic, Now
    • Abstract: In winter 2017, I prepared to teach Sarah Orne Jewett as I usually do, by focusing on Jewett's New England roots, her female friend-and mentorships, and her importance to American regionalism. But as the students in my American Realism class and I delved into Jewett's fiction, we became struck by its powerful transnational themes and currents, which contest the common understanding of Jewett as primarily a regional writer. One character in "The Queen's Twin" travels to see the Queen of England, convinced that since they share the same birthday, they are twins.1 Another pulls old Indian muslin, a waistcoat of "strange old-fashioned foreign stuff," and "old French and Spanish and English gold" out of a sea chest ... • Transnational American Literary Studies in the Time of Trump
    • Abstract: Of what use are transnational American literary studies in an era of virulently resurgent nationalism' At a time when promises of bigger and higher border walls helped elect an ethnocentric demagogue as President of the United States, when travel bans (however botched) are announced with regularity, and when the interests of business are deemed synonymous with the interests of America in the halls of power, examining American literature in transnational perspective has more to teach us than ever.American texts have been crossing borders for centuries—being translated, reinterpreted, revised, and reimagined—inspiring writers around the globe to produce their own original and often arresting responses. What insights ... Read More

  • On the Road Again with the American Girl
    • Abstract: The vocal trends of young women and girls, such as "vocal fry," "uptalk," slang and conversational fillers such as "like" and "um," are often taken as signs of their insecurity or the insignificance of the content of their speech. However, some scholars have suggested that in fact these linguistic features are sophisticated mechanisms for negotiating social interactions, possibly as cues and tools in building relationships with others through language. Girl culture has proven a kind of "incubator" for vocal stylings that spread across other divisions to older generations and to men; young women are, in short, linguistic innovators.I was reminded of this phenomenon and the media coverage it has briefly received when ... • The New Border
    • Abstract: Few ideas have captured the resurgent nationalist imagination as successfully as the US-Mexico border wall. Donald J. Trump promised to build a "big, fat, beautiful wall" as a campaign refrain that generated wild applause at rallies and steady praise from right-wing commentators (Finnegan, Los Angeles Times, June 3, 2016). Trump did not invent the idea of the wall ex nihilo. It is, rather, the culmination of a thirty-year amplification of the US security regime. Beginning in the early 1990s, the Border Patrol began erecting barriers on the border between Tijuana and San Diego, a move formalized and funded under Operation Gatekeeper during the Clinton Administration. Border militarization increased steadily during ... Read More

  • Translocal Somalia: Women's Migratory Testimonies
    • Abstract: Donald Trump intemperately campaigned for a "complete and total shutdown" of Muslims entering the United States, during which he called refugee resettlement "the great Trojan horse of all time."1 This fear of Muslims has contributed to a tripling of anti-Islamic hate groups between 2015 and 2016, such as the three "Crusaders" from a Kansas town (ironically named Liberal) who were caught planning to detonate car bombs outside a housing complex of Muslim Somali refugees who worked in the local meat-packing plant.2 Trump's two executive orders in the first months of his Presidency ruled that travelers from predominately Muslim nations of Iran, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen (originally Iraq) should ... • National, Transnational, International
    • Abstract: In the wake of the US presidential election of 2016, it is worth pondering the fate and future of the transnational turn in literary studies. The slogan to "Make America Great Again" does not acknowledge the extent to which this nativist nostalgia is wrapped around larger global developments and crises from Brexit to the rise of ISIS and the flood of refugees from the Syrian conflict zone. Still, President Donald Trump's captious take on everything from NATO agreements to the Paris climate accords invites us to ask: has the aesthetic and political potential of transnationalism already passed us by'We might be tempted to pose this question in spite of the evidence gleaned from a quick sampling of conference themes ... • Transnationalism and Anti-Globalism
    • Abstract: The recent resurgence of nationalism in the United States finds expression in a whole vocabulary, made up of slogans, rallying cries, and buzzwords. Most prominent among them may be "Make America Great Again" and "America First," but there is another buzzword—anti-globalism—which is particularly suggestive of the conundrum transnationalism faces in the Age of Trump. The term anti-globalism results from an act of rhetorical appropriation and resignification, and as I want to suggest, the idea of transnationalism plays an important role in this repackaging effort.Anti-globalism recalls the anti-globalization movement of the 1990s and early 2000s, but this resonance brings out the differences rather than similarities ... • Creolizing the White Woman's Burden: Mary Seacole Playing "Mother" at the
Colonial Crossroads between Panama and Crimea
    • Abstract: While subjugated peoples cannot readily control what emanates from the dominant culture, they do determine to varying extents what they absorb into their own, and what they use it for.If minor formations become method and theory, then new analytics will be brought to the foreground that creolize the universalisms we live with today from the bottom up and from the inside outIn August 1870, the British nurse Florence Nightingale, who later became a national icon for her patriotic service, gave a negative account of the Jamaican "Creole" woman Mary Seacole and her activity in the Crimean War (1854–1856). Responding to the request of a reference for Seacole from her brother-in-law, the MP Sir Harry Verney, Nightingale ... Read More

  • Framing the Narrative: Ethical Relationships in Post-Apartheid South
           African Museums
    • Abstract: One of the main challenges facing South Africa in the twenty-first century involves reshaping its national identity in the wake of colonialism and, more recently, apartheid. Benedict Anderson, drawing on foundational theorists of nationalism such as Ernest Gellner, Ernest Renan, and Eric Hobsbawm, argues that national identity emerges through cultural artifacts grounded in specific histories (2006, 4). South Africa's cultural artifacts and history, and the ways in which they are represented and narrated, are integral to the creation of what Harriet Deacon, Martin Murray, Annie E. Coombes, Lynn Meskell, and others have identified as the "New South Africa." When considering how this identity is created and narrated ... Read More

  • "Murky Mercy": Michel Faber's Under the Skin and the Difficulty of Reality
    • Abstract: At first blush, Michel Faber's debut novel, Under the Skin, reads like a post-structuralist paradise. A female protagonist struggling with gender stereotypes and male violence in an underprivileged, rural setting' Check. A story of physical mutilation and queer body image' Check. A poignant critique of the mass killing of animals in the meat industry' Check. A planet collapsing under the weight of large-scale technological exploitation, here set against the pristine beauty of the Scottish Highlands' Check. There's more than enough in these pages to sate the appetite of scholars of gender studies, post-humanism, animal studies, and ecocriticism. The protagonist, Isserley, is an alien surgically modified to look like ... Read More

  • "May the War be Remembered but Not Repeated": Engendering Peace in Nadine
Labaki's Where Do We Go Now'
    • Abstract: May 2008 was a tumultuous month for Lebanon. It marked the eruption of sectarian violence among militias affiliated with Lebanon's two major political factions, the March 14 alliance and the March 8 coalition.1 Even though the tension between these political groups had been brewing for a while, the fact that political tensions escalated into armed conflict shook the country. Lebanese civilians, many of whom were still recovering from a fifteen-year civil war (1975–1990) and a thirty-three day war with Israel (2006), found themselves thrusted into a conflict that disrupted their daily lives, threatened their safety and economic security, and confirmed their deepest fears that the war, which many had so hoped would ... • Repositioning Lorelei's Education: Mind, Body, and Sex(uality) in Anita
           Loos' Gentleman Prefer Blondes
    • Abstract: "I mean I seem to be thinking practically all of the time."
Authors sometimes write novels they never intend to write. They say their books are about one thing, but they also seem to distinctly manifest some other thing. Such is the case with Anita Loos' immensely entertaining 1925 Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. On the one hand, Loos does exactly what she says she intended in her 1963 "The Biography of a Book"; she writes a book satirizing intelligence (1998a, xxxviii). On the other hand, through Loos' playful mockery of intelligence, she also writes a book queering allusions to the age-old argument of mind-body dualism, the apex of which becomes a mischievous squabble about sex.On the cutting edge of culture with its ... • Literary Geographies: Creative Mapping Assignments in a Humanities
           Classroom
    • Abstract: Maps are too important to be left to cartographers alone. In his famous sci-fi novel Dhalgren, Samuel R. Delany describes a city whose outer and inner contours are utterly unmappable. The city does not appear on a conventional map; one just finds it. It is designed to obfuscate: street signs are missing, misplaced, vandalized, or purposefully misleading. Its components continually shift and change, ensuring the city remain a mystery that cannot be absorbed into the logic of instrumental rationality. The novel's strong anti-cartographic impulse, however, is complemented by the city's general openness to the eye of a poet: "Brass Orchids"—a collection of poems written by the novel's protagonist—helps to make sense of ... • The Transmutation of Love and Avant-Garde Poetics by Jeanne Heuving
           (review)
    • Abstract: In The Transmutation of Love and Avant-Garde Poetics, Jeanne Heuving pursues a seemingly paradoxical question: what can be avant-garde about romantic love' Long associated in critical theory with problematic ideals of authentic subjectivity and bourgeois capitalism, and framed in poetry seminars as the residue of an unfashionable lyric tradition (particularly in the age of the Confessional and Language poets), romantic love seems irreconcilable with avant-gardist suspicions of the state, the family, and the prevailing order of things. However, Heuving argues persuasively that romantic love served as a primary aesthetic concept and motivating force in the experimental poetic writing of the twentieth-century North ... Read More
