  • Decolonizing Queer Camp in Edwin Sánchez's Diary of a Puerto Rican
           Demigod
    • Abstract: An expression my father often uses to describe a strong relationship of trust and admiration is "Él no quiere cuenta conmigo." Literally it means "He doesn't want to have an account with me," but this Puerto Rican saying suggests good friendships are built on mutual trust and not indebtedness. However, in contemporary neoliberal economies, whether at the personal or national level, worth is assessed by how much debt one can incur, with the assumption that the more credit you are given, the more likely your income and sources of capital will allow you to repay it. Economic anthropologist David Graeber—whose book Debt: The First 5,000 Years (2011) became a bestseller after the 2008 financial meltdown and the rise of ... Read More

  • The Genre Spaces of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas
    • Abstract: List'n, savages an' Civ'lizeds ain't divvied by tribes or b'liefs or mountain ranges, nay, ev'ry human is both, yay. Old Uns'd got the Smart o' gods but the savagery o' jackals an' that's what tripped the Fall. Some savages what I knowed got a beautsome Civ'lized heart beatin' in their ribs.More even than the travel log and science fiction genres it emulates, David Mitchell's third novel Cloud Atlas, published in 2004 and short-listed for the Booker Prize that same year, is a novel of exotic encounters: encounters between opportunistic Europeans and the Pacific aborigines they displace; between complacent consumers and artificial food servers, suddenly all too human; and ultimately a novel about the encounters of ... • Reading Rohinton Mistry's A Fine Balance After 9/11
    • Abstract: In the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Americans sought to identify their location in a new "world narrative" that Don DeLillo, writing in Harper's, observed, "belongs to the terrorist" (2001, 33). Extending his emphasis on the inescapability of terror's narrative, DeLillo asserts, "The narrative ends in rubble, and it is left to us to create the counter-narrative" (34). These counter-narratives, DeLillo offers, could be found in the false memories and imagined losses of distant spectators, the rumors and myths of the internet, and the joined hands of the falling men and women jumping from the disintegrating towers—the smaller details of vulnerability and longing that could help capture the ... • Environmental Imperialism in Joseph Conrad's Nostromo
    • Abstract: Contemporary focus on imperialism invariably emphasizes its deleterious effects on indigenous peoples and cultures, but imperialism is also about nature. Whether it be acquiring new territories or acquiring material resources, imperialist expansion is almost always tied to nature.1 More so than many literary works, Joseph Conrad's Nostromo reveals an imperial exploitation of nature that parallels its exploitation of the local population.Long considered an exposé of American and British economic imperialism,2 Nostromo inquires as much into the processes and consequences of imperialist development of nature as it inquires into the effects of political and economic imperialism in the fictitious South American country ... • Sound Statements and Counterpoints: Ike Oguine's Channeling of Music,
Highlife, and Jazz in A Squatter's Tale
    • Abstract: The musical connections between Africa and black America are not just a continuum but can also be viewed as a powerful and unrelenting cycle. The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story.Get Out, Jordan Peele's debut film, is one of the most commended movies of 2017. A low-budget production about a young, interracial couple, starring Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams), the film generated considerable buzz. Audiences were struck by its fresh take on the old subject of miscegenation's afterlives. Film critics applauded its cinematic innovations, underscoring its ... Read More

  • The Politics of Friendship and the Gendering of Discourse in Anne
           Enright'S The Gathering
    • Abstract: In The Politics of Friendship, first published in 1994, Jacques Derrida gives an account of the Western history of the conceptualization of friendship, pointing out how it excludes woman from the status of friend.1 This exclusion is insinuated in discourse, in the name itself, such that democracy is premised on fraternity, of which friendship is a superior form. According to the classical Greek tradition, friendship depends on the sharing of a common value system—for which consanguinity becomes a metaphor—and on the recognition of certain virtues in the other who is the friend. The paradigm shift to Christianity and implicitly to the "love thy neighbour" edict brought little change in this respect, other than by ... Read More

  • Vincentio's Selves in Measure for Measure
    • Abstract: Early in Measure for Measure, Claudio judges that Duke Vincentio's deputy Angelo, for whatever reason, lets "the body public . . . straight feel the spur" (1.2.147–150).1 The phrase "body public" is a bit unusual, since an auditor might think he or she had heard the familiar phrase "body politic." The phrase "body public" implies that a "body private" exists. This duality could refer to the Medieval/ Renaissance concept of the royal ruler's two bodies, one eternal and the other mortal. But Measure for Measure never evokes or alludes to this idea. The public and private bodies are actually one body, that of Duke Vincentio. More precisely, they are his public and private selves, often at odds with each other. Yet in ... Read More

  • The "Along Comes" Device: Surveillance Capitalism and the Space of
Appearance in Lyn Hejinian's Twenty-First Century Writing
    • Abstract: In the text that forms the "circus" of Lyn Hejinian's two-part book Saga/Circus (2008), Hejinian writes that "Money has no memory—it forgets what it paid for, shows no trace of where it's been or why" (2008, 30). Notes for Saga/Circus archived at the University of California San Diego reveal that the remark Hejinian published, along with her further thought that "Money doesn't reveal what has been sold for it" (Hejinian Papers, Box 111, Folder 10), are paraphrases of Marx.1 In the relevant passage of Capital, Marx writes that "Since money does not reveal what has been transformed into it, everything, commodity or not, is convertible into money. Everything becomes saleable and purchasable" (1867, 229). For Marx this ... Read More

  • Benjamin Franklin, Virtue, and the Good Life
    • Abstract: Even during his lifetime, Franklin's friends (like readers today) speculated about Franklin's spiritual life and belief practices. Some wondered whether he personally experienced spiritual inspiration typical for Christians of his day or whether he totally denied the possibility of metaphysical presence in the physical realm (Mulford 2013). Franklin admired the itinerant Anglican evangelist, George Whitefield, and he strongly defended the Irish minister, Samuel Hemphill, during a controversy over Hemphill's preaching in Philadelphia (Christensen). The scientist and dissenting minister, Joseph Priestley, was among Franklin's closest friends. Yet in his own memoir, Priestley "lamented" that Franklin, so full of ... Read More

  • Ingenious Citizenship: Recrafting Democracy for Social Change by Charles
           Lee (review)
    • Abstract: Charles Lee's Ingenious Citizenship: Recrafting Democracy for Social Change is a well-researched book that will prove important for theorists of social change, political agency, and social movements. Lee begins by critiquing the premises that undergird the common conception of political agency as "a capacity to act politically in ways that are public and collective" (3). Whereas most scholars associate democratic agency with liberalist thought, Lee contends that radical political thinkers conceive of political agency in the same way. According to Lee, the liberal and radical assumption that political agency is democratic agency becomes the assumption that political agency ought to be democratic agency. This slide ... Read More
