  • What Dies in the Street: Camus’s La Peste and Infected Networks
    • Abstract: When Albert Camus documented the occupation of the Free Zone of France by Nazi Germany in 1942 by writing, “11 novembre. Comme des rats!” (Cahiers 52), he had already set in motion the controversy that was to greet his novel, La Peste. The book, published in 1947, produced a fierce disagreement among France’s intellectuals. For Roland Barthes, the novel was simple: Nazism is transformed into bubonic plague and, in the face of timid politicians and an uncooperative public, a small band of idealistic resisters fight to beat back the scourge. While Barthes praised the call to arms he saw in the novel, he could not help asking if the very act of using metaphor to understand fascism represented a dangerous disengagement ... Read More

  • Correspondance de Madame de Graffigny. Tome 15 (1 January 1756–10
           November 1759). Lettres 2304–2518 by D. W. Smith (review)
    • Abstract: The publication of the final installment of Françoise de Graffigny’s correspondence means that readers who have followed the unfolding of her life volume by volume will now eavesdrop for the last time on a crisis in one of her relationships and read about the final card game or dinner among friends. We’ll no longer have a bird’s eye view of evenings at the theater—or of the censorship of classic Enlightenment works.Fifteen volumes, the first of which appeared in 1985, have been published by the Voltaire Foundation. They contain just over 2,500 letters, covering the final forty-two years of Graffigny’s life—whereas the Pléiade edition of the correspondence from the last thirty-eight years of Sévigné’s existence ...
Read More

  • Creoles Renegades: Rhetoric of Betrayal and Guilt in the Caribbean
           Diaspora by Bénédicte Boisseron (review)
    • Abstract: Bénédicte Boisseron’s Creole Renegades: Rhetoric of Betrayal and Guilt in the Caribbean Diaspora is an engaging, masterful, and multi-layered analysis of writers whose relationship to a Caribbean identity remains ambivalent despite—or because—of their literary acclaim. Six primary figures anchor Boisseron’s study: Anatole Broyard, Maryse Condé, Edwidge Danticat, Dany Laferrière, Jamaica Kincaid, and V. S. Naipaul. Boisseron calls these authors “Creole renegades” because they “have ceased to write either from or to the metropolitan center; they have also ceased to write at home in the restricted sense of ‘home’ as a native place; and they have even ceased to write within the collective consciousness of the external ... • Rewriting the “Whore’s Story” in Rétif’s
           Palais-royal
    • Abstract: Only a handful of modern critics have written about Nicolas-Edme Rétif de la Bretonne’s Palais-royal, perhaps because the work exhibits many of the confounding characteristics of the typical retivian text. Appearing in 1790, the three-volume Palais-royal is a lengthy composite of several parts, more or less successfully linked by the themes of libertinism, sentimental moralism, and social activism: Les Filles de l’Allée des Soupirs, Les Sunamites, and Les Ex-Sunamites, the three main groups of texts which comprise Le Palais-royal composed of more than 65 separate tales about prostitutes; followed by Les Gentilhommes de morgues, Le Curé patriote, and Le Divorce nécessaire, stories Rétif included in order to complete ... • Germaine Dulac: A Cinema of Sensations by Tami Williams (review)
    • Abstract: Tami Williams’s Germaine Dulac is, as one would guess from its title, an auteur (or more appropriately given the case, auteure!) study. It is also, an exemplary piece of film history—and in spite of its auteur framing, a significant contribution to what one hopes is a burgeoning trend in cinema and media studies of revisionist histories dedicated to the role of women in the film industry. (Williams spends a good deal of time discussing Dulac’s work in the ciné-club movement and film industry beyond her actual directing.) Composed of prose that is clear, logical, and enjoyable to read, this book is essential reading for anyone who has an interest in early French cinema, the Interwar avant-garde, and/or the history ... • State Power, Stigmatization and Youth Resistance Culture in the French
Banlieues: Uncanny Citizenship by Hervé Tchumkam (review)
    • Abstract: State Power, Stigmatization, and Youth Resistance Culture in French Banlieues est une autopsie de la situation politique des citoyens Français descendants de l’immigration africaine, écartelés entre inclusion et exclusion au regard de la sphère politique française. • Theorizing the Scapegoat in Maupassant and Zola
    • Abstract: Et Claude . . . serra sa ceinture, en grondant d’une voix fâchée: “Quels gredins que les honnêtes gens!”1Elle se sentait noyée dans le mépris de ces gredins honnêtes qui l’avaient sacrifiée d’abord, rejetée ensuite, comme une chose malpropre et inutile.2Although much has been written about Maupassant’s links to Zola and his judgments of the older man’s novels,3 the above intertext between his Boule de Suif (1880) and Le Ventre de Paris (1873), the third volume in Zola’s Rougon-Macquart cycle, appears to date to have gone unnoticed. I will argue here that this connection helps to reveal a much deeper kinship between the two narratives, which can both be read as accounts of the protagonist’s scapegoating. Using René ... Read More

  • The Would-Be Author: Molière and the Comedy of Print by Michael Call
           (review)
    • Abstract: Recent scholarship about Molière has been largely polarized over the degree to which he should be considered an author in the official academic sense of the term. He has been variously characterized as a philosophically-minded writer who used his plays to convey consistent messages or as a pure man of the theater (actor and director) who cared about nothing other than pleasing his audiences—or, a third alternative, as a forerunner of postmodernism who promoted a polyvocal approach to texts and condemned characters who aim to manipulate discourse for tyrannical ends. In his well-written and carefully researched study, Michael Call proposes a more nuanced assessment that, while retaining certain elements from earlier ... Read More

  • The “Business” of Violence in Yasmina Reza’s God of
           Carnage
    • Abstract: In Critique of Violence: Between Poststructuralism and Critical Theory Beatrice Hanssen claims that “violence now includes such phenomenologically elusive categories as psychological, symbolic, structural, epistemic, hermeneutical, and aesthetic violence” (8). This translates in two opposite approaches: either we detect violence where it is not, or conversely, violence is everywhere. In this latter approach, violence is an all-embracing concept, and defines almost every human act. It thus loses its specificity and efficacy in elucidating human behaviours, and consequently the multifarious representations of violence in literature serve no purpose. If we turn to French literature this conundrum is all the more ... • Mirror Gazing by Warren Motte (review)
    • Abstract: When I was an undergraduate, I had a professor who pointed out to my class on twentieth-century French theater the importance of mirror scenes. I do not remember the specifics of the lesson, either its theoretical underpinnings or the specific mirror scene we were studying. But I did internalize the central point of the matter: that mirror scenes are noteworthy. So in the 20-plus years since I took that class, I have paid special attention to mirror scenes in books, films, plays, and television shows. And it is indeed true: mirror scenes, across genres and media, often mark or coincide with a crucial narrative moment. Be it an instance of self-awareness, a pivotal moment of transformation, or a marker of ... Read More

Read More
