  • Allegory and the Art of Memory in Book 2 of Spenser's Faerie Queene
    • Abstract: At the end of book 2 of Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene, as Guyon and the Palmer leave Acrasia's ruined Bower of Bliss, they encounter her former lovers, whom, Circe-like, she has transformed into wild beasts. Guyon asks "what meant those beastes, which there did ly," and the Palmer explains that "these seeming beasts are men indeed" whose "figures hideous" Acrasia has transformed to reveal "mindes like monstruous."1 If these "hideous" "figures" are "men indeed," Guyon reasons, they should be made to appear so. The Palmer restores them to human form and thus, apparently, to legibility, but even after resuming their manly appearance, Acrasia's lovers "vnmanly looke" (2.12.86.3). One man "aboue the rest in speciall" ... Read More

  • Ophelia's Desire
    • Abstract: Every great theory is founded on a problem it cannot solve. For psychoanalytic criticism, that problem is Ophelia. Sigmund Freud's Oedipal reading of Hamlet, mutually constitutive with his reading of Oedipus Rex, initiates the project of Freudian literary interpretation.1 But that reading must, by its most basic logic, displace Ophelia and render her an anomaly. If the Queen is Hamlet's primary erotic object, why does he have another love interest' Why such a specific and unusual love interest' The answer that Freud and his disciples offer is that Hamlet's expressions of love or rage toward Ophelia are displacements of his cathexis on the queen.2 That argument is tautological—one might as easily say that Hamlet ... • "And palate call judicious": Paradise Lost and the Question of Taste
    • Abstract: According to the third chapter of Genesis, when Eve "saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took the fruit thereof, and did eat" (Gen. 3:6).1 The biblical account lists three related but discrete motivations for Eve's transgression: the apparent wholesomeness of the fruit as food, the visual attractiveness of the tree, and the allure of transgressive knowledge. In Paradise Lost, John Milton demands from his readers a subtler consideration of the interplay between perception, pleasure, and knowledge. At the initial moment of the Fall, Milton describes how                                                           EveIntent now ... Read More

  • Daniel Defoe and the Whig Tradition in Satire
    • Abstract: Daniel Defoe was the most prolific satirist of the early eighteenth century. Among his contemporaries, Defoe was known as "the Author of The True-Born Englishman," the sobriquet under which his individual satires were published in addition to his two volumes of collected writings in 1703 and 1705.1 Over a period of twenty-five years beginning in 1691, Defoe produced at least nineteen verse satires and an equal number of satirical pamphlets.2 Until recently, though, Defoe has been mostly discussed by literary scholars as a novelist, and by historians as a topical journalist and government dogsbody.3 When considered at all, Defoe's satires (particularly his verse satires) have tended to be dismissed as hack work.4 ... • Joseph Addison's Lucretian Imagination
    • Abstract: Titus Lucretius Carus, Roman poet and author of De rerum natura, makes three appearances in the eighteenth-century English periodical, The Spectator. Compared to the multitude of times the Spectator authors, Joseph Addison and Richard Steele, invoke the authority of Horace or Virgil, three references might seem unworthy of especial notice. And indeed, to the best of my knowledge, the presence of Lucretius in The Spectator has not sparked critical interest. This neglect is perhaps all the more justifiable given that two of the three citations from De rerum natura hover in the margins in the form of epigraphs. As such, they seem merely to conform to the authors' standard practice of placing a citation from the ... Read More

  • Fiction, Finance, and Eliza Wharton's "Awful Futurity" in Early America
    • Abstract: When Eliza Wharton, the doomed heroine of Hannah Webster Foster's The Coquette, resigns herself to what she calls an "awful futurity," she acknowledges far too late a mindset definitive of the novel and modern commerce.1 If to resign (a term Eliza uses throughout the novel) is to lose one's grasp on the possible, Eliza's ultimate resignation—her death at novel's end—reinforces the era's mandate to imagine the future as a probable outcome.2 Over the course of the nineteenth century this imperative intensified, expressing itself, as Thorstein Veblen would argue in Theory of Business Enterprise, in the need among business managers to continue "accelerating the rate of turnover" of investment into profit.3 And yet even ... • Viewless Scenes: Vividness and Nineteenth-Century Ideals of Reading in and
           through Gertrude of wyoming
    • Abstract: In 1814, a frontispiece was added to the fifth edition of Thomas Campbell's Gertrude of Wyoming (Figure 1).1 Framing the poem with a single scene, the frontispiece features the heroine reading in Wyoming, Pennsylvania. Gertrude reclines in the foreground, her back against a palm tree, book in lap. Light streams down on her even as it also seems to emanate from the blank pages before her. Thick vegetation fills the vertical space: tropical fronds and cattails are just visible in the midground, and flowers circle Gertrude's hair as well as the palm tree's trunk. Meanwhile, in the background a dimly lit man and his white horse peer hazily in Gertrude's direction, the man's hand raised to peer at something in the ... Read More

  • Conversing in Verse
    • Abstract: One feature of ballads is their implicit sociability, starting with that most common of ballad conventions, narration by conversation. Overheard dialogues—often a series of cryptic questions and replies or requests and responses—distribute narrative agency in ballads among several voices interacting with each other:"O sister, sister, reach your hand,And ye shall be heir of half my land.""O sister, I'll not reach my hand,And I'll be heir of all your land.""O sister, reach me but your glove,And sweet William shall be your love.""Sink on, nor hope for hand or glove,And sweet William shall better be my love."1Rapid shifts from voice to answering voice allow listeners or readers to participate directly in ... • Thug Life: Confession, Subjectivity, Sovereignty
    • Abstract: "Vis inertiae, a violent propensity for refraining from any action, is one of the characteristics of the East."Describing his travels through India in Following the Equator, Mark Twain often works himself into a fever pitch over the many grandiosities and spectacles that the subcontinent affords. Temples and fortresses are exalted, but for the author India's real allurements are the sociological edifices erected by this, the first civilization: caste, a strict hierarchy that governs ethnological chaos, and the satanic brotherhood of Thugs, a fraternity of murderers that is to crime what caste is to social stratification: its most sublime expression. As Twain wanders through India it is thugs who, as constant ... Read More

  • Dissociating Psychology: Religion, Inspiration, and T. S. Eliot's
           Subliminal Mind
    • Abstract: The raised hands, the eyes turned toward the heavens, the tilted head bathed in an unseen light: these features of ecstasy are offered up as symptoms of pathology in the Iconographie photographique de la Salpêtrière (Figure 1).1 This volume, prepared by the students of the great doctor of hysteria, Jean-Martin Charcot (1825–1893)—and from which the photograph below is taken—lies at the intersection of medicine and technology; the elusive stages of a shadowy disorder were fixed on photographic plates, then developed, collected, and published in a reference work to which medical professionals and enlightened members of the public could then refer.2 The pose struck by the patient, as Charcot and his disciples were ...
