  • Raining Mice and Russian Leather: The Production of Knowledge in the Early
Royal Society and Thomas Browne’s The Garden of Cyrus
    • Abstract: Two scenes from the curiosities of early modern scientific experience: somewhere in Norfolk, a group of virtuosi, those gentlemen amateur scientists that participated intently in the English culture of experimentation, including the natural philosopher-physician Thomas Browne, gather round a tub of water, staring at the shard of ancient bone that is lying at its bottom. One of them has dropped the shard, recently recovered from the 40 or 50 urns unearthed in a field near Old Walsingham, into the water in order to discern its substance, which they had initially thought to be wood. Along with the urns themselves and the other scattered materials from them, this shard will serve as the inspiration for Browne’s ... Read More

  • Reading Milton and Newton in the Radical Reformation: Poetry, Mathematics,
           and Religion
    • Abstract: The last few years have seen a substantive upswing in literary critical reassessments of both traditional and new-historicist framings of literary periods, including the Restoration—the period under discussion in my essay.1 One especially notable aspect of these new attempts to complicate enduring notions of Restoration literature, such as the Age of Dryden, is that they have galvanized literary critical efforts to place John Milton and Isaac Newton in closer historical and cultural contiguity. As Nicholas McDowell argues, the broader cultural significance of Milton’s and Newton’s mortalism and other heterodox convictions (anticlericalism, resolute adherence to the signature Protestant doctrine of sola ... • The Proper Study of Mankind in Pope and Thomson
    • Abstract: Alexander Pope’s An Essay on Man is usually considered within a certain set of local contexts, whether as a part of his unfinished opus magnum, as an episode in his friendship with Henry St. John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, as a theodicy, or as a happy disguise for “penury of knowledge and vulgarity of sentiment.”1 Perhaps counterintuitively, it was also a specifically targeted response to James Thomson’s The Seasons. While resituating Thomson’s pre-Romantic diction as an emanation of his own local context, and challenging the notion of Pope’s Augustan exceptionalism by showing his thorough engagement with a poet writing apparently far outside his own cadre, I show how the two poets used a common theodical framework ... • So Close a Connection: Painful Associations in Samuel Richardson’s
           Clarissa
    • Abstract: Near the beginning of Samuel Richardson’s Clarissa, Anna Howe warns her friend that her love for her family is clouding her judgment. She writes:But you are so tender of some people who have no tenderness for anybody but themselves, that I must conjure you to speak out. Remember that a friendship like ours admits of no reserves. You may trust my impartiality. It would be an affront to your own judgement if you did not; for do you not ask my advice?—And have you not taught me that friendship should never give a bias against justice?1Usually it is Clarissa who chides Anna for making her the object of a “partial love,” but here the roles are reversed (C, 73). Anna suspects that, in order to protect the Harlowes from ... Read More

  • Charles Brockden Brown’s Romance and the Limits of Science and
           History
    • Abstract: In his frequently cited preface to Edgar Huntly, Charles Brockden Brown characterizes his project in what have been taken as particularly national and political terms. Noting that “America has opened new views to the naturalist and politician, but has seldome furnished themes to the moral painter,” Brown seeks to explore this unharvested “field of investigation.”1 Brown continues by noting that “new springs of action, and new motives to curiosity,” which “differ essentially from those which exist in Europe,” are at work in the new nation (EH, 3). In concluding his initial description of his project, however, Brown complicates his national focus by stating that he will construct “a series of adventures, growing out ... Read More

  • “The length, breadth, and depth, of the wound”: Irish Historical
           Violence and Ennui’s Amnesiac Aesthetics
    • Abstract: In an 1834 letter to her half-brother Michael Pakenham Edgeworth, then in India, Maria Edgeworth wrote about Helen, her last major novel, that the seemingly intractable politics of Ireland had excluded it as a possible setting for literature: “I should tell you beforehand that there is no humour in it, and no Irish character. It is impossible to draw Ireland as she now is in a book of fiction—realities are too strong, party passions too violent to bear to see, or care to look at their faces in the looking-glass. The people would only break the glass, and curse the fool who held the mirror up to nature—distorted nature, in a fever.”1 From the novelist who has been credited with the invention of the Irish national ... • Why Is There So Much French in Villette?
    • Abstract: Since at least the Norman conquest, good style in English has depended on a soupçon of French. Every attentive writer of English knows that an occasional dash of French adds a je ne sais quoi. In the nineteenth century, much English prose contains a smattering of French, while some works include many—sometimes too many—French words. Anglophone writers in the Victorian period often traveled to French-speaking countries and some were intensely interested in French politics and culture. To name only the most prominent examples, these include William Makepeace Thackeray, Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Oscar Wilde. These authors both read French ... Read More

  • The “Desecrated Mind” & Its Alternatives: Dante Rossetti
           and Political Economy
    • Abstract: Dante Rossetti’s poem “Jenny,” first conceived in 1848 but not published until 1870, is almost exclusively discussed in the contexts of contemporary prostitution and the idea of the fallen woman. This focus is of course entirely appropriate given that the poem is made up of an address to a prostitute by an educated and contemplative speaker, and also contains an overt comparison between Jenny and the speaker’s young and innocent “cousin Nell.”1 The poem’s connection to Rossetti’s unfinished painting Found (1853–82) also supports this approach, for the painting depicts “a young man from the country” rescuing what appears to be “his fallen sweetheart” from a life of urban prostitution.2 For Amanda Anderson, “Jenny” ... • Matter, Form, Idea: What Lovejoy’s History of Ideas Might Have To Do
           With Literature
    • Abstract: “I was supposed to wind up the study of mine, and become the Lovejoy of my generation.”1 So says Moses E. Herzog, the central character of Saul Bellow’s 1964 novel, erstwhile intellectual historian of Romanticism, now possibly “out of [his] mind.”2 It is a ridiculous ambition, Bellow implies, and not only because poor Herzog will never himself be the Lovejoy of his generation. It is ridiculous because there never could be a Lovejoy of this generation. Bellow’s joke may be on Lovejoy or on this new generation or both, but however it cuts, it depends on the massive stature of Arthur Oncken Lovejoy—founder of the distinctive American discipline of the history of ideas—as well as its evident if recent eclipse. Herzog ... Read More

  • Alliterative Meter and English Literary History, 1700–2000
    • Abstract: In 2008, Nicolay Yakovlev submitted a D.Phil. thesis at the University of Oxford entitled “The Development of Alliterative Metre from Old to Middle English.”1 Little known outside the field of metrics, and still unpublished, this thesis has already been felt to mark a significant juncture in the history of the study of alliterative meter.2 With a rare combination of conceptual clarity and philological precision, Yakovlev traces a continuous history of composition in the English alliterative meter, stretching from Beowulf (?eighth/tenth centuries) through Lawman’s Brut (circa 1200) through Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (late fourteenth century) and on into the sixteenth century. In excavating this metrical longue ...
