  • Essays From The English Institute 2015: Figure
    • Abstract: When members of the Board chose the keyword "figure" for the first meeting of the English Institute away from Harvard in a generation, they were aware that they would be hosting a weekend's discussion of the term at Yale, a place once closely associated with thinking about figuration in language. With all the differences that always marked the members of the so-called Yale School, it is also true that each of them was interested in figuration. Paul de Man, reading Friedrich Nietzsche, had insisted on "the figurality of all language."1 Barbara Johnson, in one of the first books to emerge from the School, described the protocols of rhetorical reading with unmatched clarity:The de-construction of a text does not ... • Compulsory Figures
    • Abstract: Erich Aucherbach's "Figura" brilliantly elucidates the dizzying range of meanings and associations that word enjoyed from Antiquity into the Middle Ages. Two of these meanings particularly interest me here: mutable shape or form, especially as it contrasts with what is immutable or imperishable; and figuration in the Augustinian sense, namely the person or occurrence that resembles and so anticipates an ultimate fulfillment yet to come.1 I want to use these meanings of figura to ask a few questions. Can a shape have ethical content' What is the relationship between embodiment, fulfillment, and failure' And finally, how might either the so-called Pearl manuscript or the sport of figure skating help us think through ... • Figures In Excess And The Matter Of Inversion In The Discourse Of The
           Sublime
    • Abstract: Technique is the definable figure of enigma in works of art.As one among others in a collective effort to think about figures and about figure more generally, I want in what follows to scrutinize how figures work in the elusive aesthetic mode of the sublime, especially one sometimes held up as paradigmatic, namely inversion or hyperbaton. My topic is circumscribed but there is a tendency for discourse of the sublime to spiral upward and outward, to spill over, to be, at the extreme, absolute, and this might be the case even or especially with figures cut in and by the sublime.1 Much the same might be said for discourse about the sublime: from the Ancients to the British soidisant empiricists, the over-the-top ... • Literary Agnotology
    • Abstract: Sometime during the morning of 4 March 1969, Robert Barry, a semi-reluctant member of what Jörg Heiser calls "the New York anti-sensuality squad" of conceptual artists, walked into the Mojave desert.1 It was cold, around 35 degrees. Barry had with him a camera and large tank of helium gas. He opened the tank and let the helium rise and expand into the dry air. There wasn't much to see, because helium is odorless, invisible, and, as one of the seven noble gases, non-reactive or, as the chemists say, inert. He took a picture: of the tank stuck at an angle into the sand, of the clear blue sky, the mountains in the distance and the desert sage. Barry would repeat this process four times over, with measured volumes of ... Read More

  • Leap Year
    • Abstract: Promise and fulfillment are real historical events. The last day of February—he won't say whether it is the twenty-eighth or twenty-ninth—finds James Schuyler at his desk, looking out the window of his apartment onto Second Avenue. "Maybe I should get over the idea that the way to write a poem is to look out the window and put it all down," he would write sometime later in a letter to Ron Padgett. "But I don't see why."3 It is the end of the day, and he is watching the sky change color outside, while inside, on the near side of the glass, five pink tulips stand in a glass of water. Five tulips, five in the afternoon: it is a composed scene, whatever it is composed for. Schuyler is sitting in front of it looking at ... Read More

  • Figuring Blackness In A Place Without Race: Sweden, Recently
    • Abstract: We've just moved to Stockholm again; I'm meeting Ellen, mother of one of my son's new classmates. She is a member of TRYCK/PUSH, a newly established group of Afro-Swedish artists and cultural workers, and therefore an excellent contact for me. Adopted from Eritrea, she grew up in Stockholm; she had been living in Denmark for the last 20 years, having gone there for acting school. Ellen is nimble and quick in her movements and, perhaps because she is an actress, is much less reserved than many Swedes would be on a first meeting. Over coffee, hot chocolate, and a fruit juice, we talk at a table near the window for nearly three hours about all things Afro-Swedish, including the differences she sees between the Swedish ... • Figure And Ground In Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre
    • Abstract: Many passages in J. W. Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, especially in its first two books, set forth little theories of art, representation, or mimesis. My topic here is a proposition about the right relation between a figure and a ground, formulated by the normally unreflective actress Philine. In book 2, chapter 4, Philine asserts that we are inclined to respond to a moving body directly, as an instance of movement as such, before grasping the body in its formal relation to non-movement—before seeing it as a figure against a ground, in other words. Philine is speaking about a dancer, but her doctrine also has implications for literary fiction and especially for the genre, still undertheorized at the time ... Read More

  • The Merchant Of Venice: Shylock And Covenantal Interplay
    • Abstract: Who is "the Jew that Shakespeare drew," and how important is his Jewishness'1 These are key hermeneutic questions for readings of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice. In her recent essay, Emma Smith challenges the scholarly myth that reads Shylock as a negative Jewish stereotype based on assumptions of a virulent Elizabethan anti-Semitism and an invented tradition of Elizabethan stage practices. Her careful debunking of scholarship that wants "a red bearded Shylock" as "perverse relief from the play's delicate and evasive sympathies" opens space for a redemptive reading of Shylock.2 But Smith sidesteps this challenge by suggesting that "Jewishness could be semantic rather than Semitic—a metaphor, not an ... • Mary Wollstonecraft's Cottage Economics: Property, Political Economy, And
           The European Future
    • Abstract: A few pages from the end of A Vindication of the Rights of Men, Mary Wollstonecraft recalls her return to England from an extended visit to Lisbon some years back. "[W]ith what delight," she says, did I not observe the poor man's garden!—The homely palings and twining woodbine, with all the rustic contrivances of simple, unlettered taste, was a sight which relieved the eye that had wandered indignant from the stately palace to the pestiferous hovel, and turned from the awful contrast into itself to mourn the fate of man, and curse the arts of civilisation!1Homing in on the cottage garden, at one level Wollstonecraft's image here is entirely conventional, as well as thoroughly political—despite (or perhaps ... • George Eliot's Feuerbach: Senses, Sympathy, Omniscience, And Secularism
    • Abstract: George Eliot's realist fiction repeatedly and explicitly declares its project to be one of cultivating sympathy, a principle nowhere more apparent than in the rhetorical intrusions of the omniscient narrators of her earliest novels. In "The Sad Fortunes of the Reverend Amos Barton," the first of the three stories collected in Eliot's earliest fictional work, Scenes of Clerical Life, the male narrator both invites the reader to consider the eponymous and imperfect protagonist, Amos, and makes his objective for the reader quite clear: "Depend upon it, you would gain unspeakably if you would learn with me to see some of the poetry and the pathos, the tragedy and the comedy, lying in the experience of a human soul that ...
