  • In and Out, or “The Ambiguity of the Jewel”
    • Abstract: You cannot keep birds from flying over your head but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair.To be penetrated is to abdicate power. In a remarkable coincidence, two unusually frank films involving male homosexuality opened within a day of each other in Western Europe. Anders als du und ich (§175) (Different from you and me [§175], dir. Veit Harlan, West Germany) premiered in Austria on 29 August 1957 under its original title, Das dritte Geschlecht (The Third Sex), and can justly be criticized for being virtually as homophobic as Jud Süβ (Jew Süss, 1940)—its director’s notorious Nazi-era feature—is anti-Semitic. The following day, however, the surprisingly gay-positive Les oeufs de l’autruche (The eggs of ... Read More

  • Black Like Malcolm: Rewriting of Black Like Me (1961) in Soul Sister
           (1969)
    • Abstract: Many students and scholars of American literature and history have heard of, if not read, John Howard Griffin’s Black Like Me (1961), the autobiographical account of a white reporter who takes medication to darken his skin and pass for black in the Jim Crow South in the late 1950s in order to investigate racial prejudice.1 When first published, Black Like Me was lauded as a powerful text about racial injustice and employed as a standard part of some high school curricula; the work also eventually was translated into fourteen languages, hit the best-seller list in England and France, and became a multimillion-copy best seller in the United States.2 Black Like Me has since fallen into critical disfavor and is rarely ... • White Skin, Black Flag: Hardcore Punk, Racialization, and the Politics of
           Sound in Southern California
    • Abstract: The year 1978 was an awfully weird time to be young in Southern California. Perhaps nowhere else at that time could a young person be so well attuned to the cultural contradictions of American capitalism, to the gap between the media’s California dreams and their own California nightmares. In the summer of that year, in Orange County, which is immediately south of Los Angeles (LA), suburban populist Howard Jarvis led the first in what would become a series of nationwide tax revolts. Jarvis’s revolt resulted in the passage of California’s Proposition 13, which severely decreased property tax rates in the state for even the wealthiest property owners. According to California historian and urban theorist Mike Davis, a ... Read More

  • On the Cultural Projection of Population Crisis: The Case of The Omega Man
    • Abstract: In 1974, Kurt Waldheim, then secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), declared the year to come “World Population Year” (1974).1 Coming less than a month after the divisive and widely publicized World Population Conference in Bucharest the same year, the UN’s agenda reflected an already charged and unprecedentedly global circulation of population alarm.2 The briefest historical overview of industrial capitalist culture suggests a consistent coincidence of moments of systemic economic crisis with the proliferation of alarmist discourses of population. The Malthusian problem of population, for example, was born in the context of industrialization in Britain in 1830s, whereas the eugenics movement reaches the ... Read More

  • Digital Transcendentalism in David Mitchell’S Cloud Atlas
    • Abstract: The life of man is a self-evolving circle, which, from a ring imperceptibly small, rushes on all sides outwards to new and larger circles, and that without end. The extent to which this generation of circles, wheel without wheel, will go, depends on the force or truth of the individual soul. All the great books in the world are but the mutilated shadowings-forth of invisible and eternally unembodied images of the soul.Near the end of “The First Luisa Rey Mystery,” one of six largely separate stories that make up David Mitchell’s 2004 novel Cloud Atlas, an antinuclear activist named Margo Roker awakens from a coma at the precise moment when Bill Smoke, the hired thug who beat her into that coma months before, is shot ... • Voices of Dissent
    • Abstract: Taking his cue, and virtually his book title, from Michel de Montaigne’s essay “Of Repentance” (“Du repentir”), Richard Strier argues that major Renaissance, Reformation, and Counter-Reformation authors did not necessarily uphold what he calls the official values of the time: reason, patience, moderation of anger, subordination of the physical to the spiritual, ordinary decency and morality, rejection of materialism and worldliness, and assertion of the need for humility.
Authors could, on the contrary, challenge all these values and often did. This argument recalled to my mind a moment in a Shakespeare Association of America seminar years ago in which a prominent English academic, having been hauled over the coals ... Read More

  • The Life and Death of Sexual Difference
    • Abstract: In Becoming Undone, Elizabeth Grosz connects Charles Darwin’s account of biological evolution as an unpredictable and open-ended process of variation to the philosophies of Henri Bergson, Gilles Deleuze, and Luce Irigaray in order to elaborate a more or less neomaterialist ontology of sexual difference as the engine of natural existence, the vital mechanism productive of the complexity and excesses of life as we may or may not know it. The book is set over and against what Grosz perceives as a postmodern feminism in which notions of nature and matter have been sidelined, and where, more precisely, ontological inquiries into the constitution of life have been subsumed under epistemological considerations of how ... • Stalinist Cosmopolitanism
    • Abstract: It has long been common practice to see Western metropolises like Paris and New York as competing centers of global modernism, as capitals in the “world republic of letters.” Katerina Clark’s magisterial Moscow, the Fourth Rome presents an alternate mapping of world culture, with the Soviet Union emerging as another potential center, one beyond capitalist bounds. This is a formidable task, given Clark’s focus on the 1930s rather than the 1920s. Few would dispute Bolshevik claims to worldliness in the earlier decade—the topic of her 1995 Petersburg: Crucible of Cultural Revolution—which witnessed the heyday of the Soviet avant-garde and Third International. Not so with the 1930s, typically regarded as a time of ... Read More

  • Books “Write Back”
    • Abstract: Ari J. Blatt’s Pictures into Words explores—as the title suggestively indicates—the complex and somewhat tense relationship between two media of artistic expression—literature and the visual culture—in the post–World War II era, when the sustained proliferation of images has permeated not only the space of our daily lives but also various fields of artistic expression. This “chronic profusion of pictures” (2), the author argues, has left a profound mark on contemporary French fiction. This ubiquitous influence is approached through the study of four novels that express a common fascination with images: Triptyque (Triptych, 1973) by Claude Simon, Un cabinet d’amateur: Histoire d’un tableau (A gallery portrait: The ...
