  • The Dialectic of War and Utopia: Systemic Closure and Embattled Social
Life in the Work of Fredric Jameson
    • Abstract: War is a form of socialism.War is war perverted. … The thing, then, is not to abolish war but to find the true war.In October 2011 at the height of the Occupy Wall Street protests, a month before occupiers were ejected from Zuccotti Park, a two-minute video posted online sparked a small flurry of commentary as it migrated from YouTube to a host of other sites. The clip depicts two US Marines standing near the park and responding to remarks by Fox News commentator Sean Hannity that the protests were unpatriotic and anti-American. While many online comments focused on the calm and cogent dismissal of Hannity, punctuated with the occasional well-placed expletive, less attention was paid to the cardboard sign held by ... • The Subjunctive Poetics Of The Undocument: C. L. R. James'S American
           Civilization
    • Abstract: What was published in 1993 as American Civilization by the Afro-Trinidadian writer and revolutionary C. L. R. James1 is an effort to identify organic, instinctive, spontaneous revolutionary tendencies within the United States. It seeks to mark those tendencies' historical origins, track their persistence and evolution, and forecast their convergence and culmination in the full creative self-expression and self-organization first of the American masses and then of the masses worldwide. Both critical of the present and utopian in its anticipation of the future, it is a comprehensive rendering, an attempt to give "a total impression of society in movement."2 But, at the same time, its author insists, it is not quite ... • Antitheatricality And Irrationality: An Alternative View
    • Abstract: Over the last three decades, antitheatrical authors like Stephen Gosson, Phillip Stubbes, and William Prynne have become increasingly visible in the literary and cultural studies of the early modern period. Even so, the tendency has been to treat these authors as ideological extremists: reactionary hacks whose opposition to stage plays originates in outrageous ideas of the self, impossible notions of right and wrong, and bizarre beliefs about humanity's susceptibility to external suggestion. This characterization can be traced back to several of the pioneering studies in the field, including Jonas Barish's The Antitheatrical Prejudice (1985) and Laura Levine's Men in Women's Clothing (1994), each of which takes the ... • Moths, Photographs, And Emigrants: The Capacity For Transmigration In The
           Work Of W. G. Sebald
    • Abstract: And since the heaviest stone that melancholy can throw at a man is to tell him he is at the end of his nature, Browne scrutinizes that which has escaped annihilation for any sign of the mysterious capacity for trans-migration he has so often observed in caterpillars and moths. That purple piece of silk he refers to, then, in the urn of Patroclus—what does it mean'Silk is a theme that weaves throughout W. G. Sebald's photograph-lined book The Rings of Saturn.1 However the specificity of its ritual uses in funerary practice arises but twice in the phototextual narrative of a walking tour through the East Anglian countryside of England, at the conclusion of the first and last sections of the book. The purple funerary ... Read More

  • Binding The Void: The Erotics Of Place In Antony And Cleopatra
    • Abstract: When Antony leaves for Rome in act 1 of Shakespeare's play, Cleopatra is left alone to indulge in a vision of him on his horse. She asks Charmian,Where think'st thou he is now' Stands he, or sits he'Or does he walk' Or is he on his horse'O happy horse, to bear the weight of Antony!Do bravely, horse! For wot'st thou whom thou mov'st'The demi-Atlas of this earth, the armAnd burgonet of men. He's speaking now,Or murmuring "Where's my serpent of old Nile'"For so he calls me.(1.5.18–26)1Two things stand out in Cleopatra's daydream: first, its unmistakable eroticism, and second, its preoccupation with Antony's whereabouts. Its eroticism lies in Cleopatra's desire not simply to observe Antony on his horse ... Read More

  • Eating Popcorn With Chopsticks: Revisionary Black Masculinity In Berry
           Gordy'S The Last Dragon
    • Abstract: Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon (TriStar, 1985) performs a disruption into racist Hollywood depictions of Black men through the use of satire, stereotype, kitsch, camp, and fantasy. The film depicts its unconventional hero, a young Black martial arts master, as an endearing odd embodiment of Orientalist stereotypes. For instance, hero Leroy Green watches Bruce Lee's film Enter the Dragon (1973) in a New York City midtown movie theater while wearing traditional Chinese male clothing (cant: cheongsam) and a straw hat while he eats popcorn with chopsticks. This mise-en-scène is heavily coded in Western Orientalism and in Black fantasy of and desire for the grandeur of Chinese culture.1 White society is absent in the ... Read More

  • Ancient Society And The New Politics: From Kant To Modes Of Production
    • Abstract: At a time when the so-called "death of theory" has alternately been celebrated or lamented (and compensated by the revival of academic philosophy and its barren subfields such as ethics and aesthetics), we may well be grateful that the most original and exciting Japanese theorist of our time, Kojin Karatani, is finally becoming more widely known in what we used to call the West. With the ambitiously named Structure of World History, indeed, Karatani's new work arrives in English at virtually the same time as its publication in Japanese. Not only is it a new turn in his own work and preoccupations, it opens some welcome new paths for our own theoretical and political discussions, reviving a number of crucial but ... Read More

  • Anna Seward And The Poetics Of Sensibility And Control
    • Abstract: At the 2011 meeting of the North American Society for the Study of Romanticism, Anne K. Mellor reflected on how the field has changed since her foundational 1993 study Romanticism and Gender. She commented that, though women writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Jane Austen, and Mary Shelley have cemented themselves as legitimate objects of study, this has largely been at the expense of a broader understanding of how women writers were working during the period. In addition to the Big Six male Romantics, we have in many cases simply added the Big Three female Romantics.1 Though this has begun to change in the last ten years, with important studies appearing about women like Anna Letitia Barbauld, Mary Robinson ... • Virtus Without Telos, Or The Ethics Of Vulnerability In Early Modern
           England
    • Abstract: The Pain of Reformation posits masculinity as an ethical condition, not just a social role, in Edmund Spenser's 1590 Faerie Queene. This shift in inquiry highlights heroic masculinity's propensity for violence and domination, and suggests the tensions inherent to a poem that purports "to fashion a gentleman or noble person in vertuous and gentle discipline," as the "Letter of the
Authors " famously avers. Rather than a didactic project that depends on creating an invulnerable masculine subject from the imposition of codified discipline, the 1590 Faerie Queene emerges as poem concerned with vulnerability, including a fundamental openness to bodily experience. In Joseph Campana's deft analysis, vulnerability becomes ... Read More
