  • Introduction: Putrefaction and the Ecologies of Life: Enter the Vulture
    • Abstract: Thom van Dooren’s book Vulture begins with a description of dokhmenishini, the Parsi funerary practice in which the human body is left on altars for vultures and other scavenging birds to consume.1 This practice has been threatened if not “broken down” by a rapidly disappearing vulture population. The culprit in this event is diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory veterinary drug ingested by the vultures who feed on animal carcasses. Since diclofenac causes kidney failure in vultures, several species in India—“once one of the most thriving vulture populations in the world”—may be headed toward extinction.2 By telling the story of the vulture, van Dooren hopes that his Western audience “will get to know these feathered ... • Putrefaction as Optical Technology
    • Abstract: James Thomson’s The Seasons is arguably a poem about seeing—its practices, theories, and connotations. Thomson’s interest in the science of optics has been evident since the poem’s publication; he dedicated Winter to Newton and honored him in A Poem Sacred to the Memory of Sir Isaac Newton (London, 1727).1 It is not surprising that the visual quality of Thomson’s writing has also been well noted. William Warton praised The Seasons for its “minute and particular enumeration of circumstances” and its “close and faithful representation of nature.”2 William Wordsworth extended the praise to visuality more generally, writing that Thomson teaches “the art of seeing.”3In this essay, I argue that Thomson’s poem, much ... • Realism and Decay in Wax
    • Abstract: In what is undoubtedly the best-known eighteenth-century literary representation of the unveiling of the body in decay, Emily St. Aubert, the heroine of Ann Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), explores a deserted gallery in the eponymous sinister castle and uncovers what she thinks will be a painting—albeit one “of uncommon size.”1 Lifting the fabric draped over this mysterious object, Emily immediately perceives that “what it had concealed was no picture” and “drop[s] senseless on the floor.”2 Her trauma is so strong that when she has “recovered her recollection, the remembrance of what she had seen had nearly deprived her of [consciousness] a second time.”3 Several hundred pages later, Radcliffe will ... • Fish out of Water: The “Prince of Whales” Sideshow and the
           Environmental Humanities
    • Abstract: From 1880 to 1882, two impresarios toured the decaying body of a dead whale throughout the United States as a kind of circus exhibition, called the “Prince of Whales.” After its death in the North Atlantic, the whale traveled by rail from Boston Harbor to Chicago for its grand debut. Its unlikely tour continued along rail lines throughout the Midwest and South to curious audiences, most of whom had never even seen the sea. This essay offers up the story of the whale and its human handlers, who worked hard to arrest the whale’s putrefaction and keep the animal fit for exhibition. Like the dead whale itself, this story is a fish out of water, an unlikely site on which to configure important new research approaches. ... Read More

  • Gut Ecology: Meat Science, Modernity, and Carrion Aversion in
           Gandhi’s India
    • Abstract: In the Raw and the Cooked, Claude Levi-Strauss defines the fundamental axes that have structured anthropological approaches to food preparation and consumption for the last half century.1 The distinction between the “raw” and “cooked,” he argues, structures dietary practices and social relations, with most cultures favoring the latter. Levi-Strauss’s culinary triangle, however, also includes a second set of binaries: the fresh and the rotten. In a special issue of Configurations devoted to putrefaction, it is worth turning, again to this second opposition, although from a biopolitical rather than structural position. I want to focus in this essay on the abjected practice of carrion eating.2 Doubtless, for many ... Read More

  • Rotting Fish in Paradise: Putrefaction, Ecophobia, and Olfactory
           Imaginations of Southern California
    • Abstract: “Bad odours make myth and life possible, but they also threaten to undo both.”Southern California is often mythologized as a “paradisiacal garden.”2 In 1874, Ben Truman, owner of the Los Angeles Star newspaper, published Semi-Tropical California. The book promoted Southern California as a region awaiting only the guiding human hand to perfect it into paradise. Truman described Southern California as an aromatic garden filled with visual and olfactory delights, the air filled with the pleasant aroma of pepper, acacia, eucalyptus, and citrus. “The grass in the gardens,” he wrote, “is like the freshly-broken emeralds that Dante saw; hyacinths and tube roses are springing up, and every slope is inhabited by modest ... • Scientific Americans: The Making of Popular Science and Evolution in
Early-Twentieth-Century U.S. Literature and Culture by John Bruni (review)

    • Abstract: “Science and literature are not two things, but two sides of one thing,” the English biologist Thomas H. Huxley supposedly remarked in an after-dinner speech in 1860. This conviction of science and literature as essentially “one thing” was not uncommon among Huxley’s contemporaries and was also evident in the lack of any clear distinction in nineteenth-century print culture between what Charles P. Snow would, almost one hundred years later, famously refer to as the “Two Cultures” of the sciences and the humanities. As numerous scholars have since argued, not only are the kinds of strict disciplinary divisions that Snow’s analysis relied on far from given, but in fact a rather recent twentieth-century invention. ... • Ecological Imaginations in Latin American Fiction by Laura Barbas-Rhoden
           (review)
    • Abstract: In 2005, critic Rob Nixon asked whether postcolonialism and environmentalism could be brought into dialogue—a question undoubtedly born of the rigorous debate among postcolonialists and ecocritics.3 The former is resolutely opposed to what Dipesh Chakrabarty has described as a problematic mode of species-level thinking, and one emboldened by recent interest in an “Anthropocene.”4 Ecocritics, on the other hand, fault postcolonialists for replacing the “land question” with more abstract concerns—primarily the preoccupation with nationalism, and later cosmopolitanism, that have marked postcolonial studies since the 1980s. But despite an often-contentious debate, postcolonial ecocritics like Laura Barbas-Rhoden have ... Read More

  • The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee (review)
    • Abstract: The Gene: An Intimate History by Siddhartha Mukherjee, in a sense, is structured like a double helix. It is a chronological account of the major discoveries in the story of the science of heredity. Running parallel to it is a narrative of the engagement with ethical and social questions raised by eugenics. The Eurocentric narrative of the science of heredity is peppered with concepts from the Sanskrit tradition, and neatly woven into the narrative are descriptions of events from the author’s own personal history, which raises questions about the extent to which genes determine people’s lives. Although Mukherjee’s narrative leads us to believe that there has been a progression of scientific knowledge from the time ... Read More
