  • Dream of an Unfettered Electrical Future: Nikola Tesla, the Electrical
Utopian Novel, and an Alternative American Sociotechnical Imaginary
    • Abstract: The fin de siècle American fascination with electricity has been well documented. David E. Nye, Carolyn Marvin, and other historians have explored the hopes and fears of the new technology in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and they have brought laboratories, living rooms, and worlds fairs back to life in the process.1 In the realm of fiction, Kenneth Roemer identified electricity as one of the three most frequently mentioned technologies in the 160 utopian, anti-utopian, and partially utopian novels he surveyed from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries.2 Although these scholars have analyzed the allure of electricity, turn-of-the-century writers and inventors sparked another ... • The Measurement of Time: Mann and Einstein’s Thought Experiments
    • Abstract: During the past few decades, scholars have pointed out similarities between the flux of time that Thomas Mann set out to explain in The Magic Mountain and the one articulated in Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity.1 Michael Kaufmann and Werner Jung, among others, emphasized how when Mann was writing his novel, Einstein’s theory— together with the ideas of thinkers such as Arthur Schopenhauer, Henri Bergson, and Oswald Spengler—led to a reassessment of the concept of time. However, if one takes a closer look, Mann’s point of view about the flux of time differs significantly from that of Einstein’s. As this article shows, although Mann uses the same methods as the physicist to evaluate the perception of the ... Read More

  • Ways of Desiring: Postcolonial Affect in Zakes Mda’s The Whale
           Caller
    • Abstract: When it comes to thinking about protecting animals from violence and instrumentalization, some postcolonial Animal Studies scholars take a rights approach, appealing to the law to redress their current unethical treatment. Zakes Mda’s The Whale Caller1 offers an opportunity to consider the merits of legal approaches while also gesturing toward other creative alternatives to animal protection through the portrayal of a postcolonial eco-tourist village in the seaside town of Hermanus, South Africa. The protagonist, the Whale Caller, develops his lifestyle and rather intense fondness for whales after noticing what appears to be a whale’s interest in and response to his kelp horn playing during a chance ... • “I am a Wire Simply”: Morse Code, H. D.’s Asphodel, and
           Modernist Posthumanism
    • Abstract: Influential feminist criticism on H. D. has already explored the implications of the coded, lesbian language in H. D.’s Madrigal Cycle—the romans à clef HERmione, Asphodel, Bid Me to Live, and Paint it Today—in great depth.1 Nonetheless, using a posthumanist lens, I want to suggest a different kind of code ripe for exploration within H. D.’s Asphodel: informational code. This renewed look at the concept of codes in H. D.’s work provides, in turn, a renewed look at how H. D.’s prose novel defines and forms identity. In Asphodel, Hermione identifies with technology both physically and mentally, particularly Morse code, and attempts to harness this code toward a spiritual Esperanto, which helps her in forming a ... • Ambivalent Media Histories
    • Abstract: “I actually have written few texts that have succeeded in discarding the schema of before and after.”1 Questions of media historiography have long played a central role in European and North American media studies, and varied recent theoretical programs have addressed the intersections of media, culture, technology, and history, including theories of cultural techniques, media archaeology, actor-network theory, media philosophy, and philosophical anthropology. And yet while advocates of these approaches pursue what might at first glance be categorized as “media history,” they often distinguish themselves from conventional modes of cultural history and call into question protocols of historical ... • The Mind Is a Collection: Case Studies in Eighteenth-Century Thought by
           Sean Silver (review)
    • Abstract: When we think of the literature that offers up modern perspectives on the nature of the mind, we tend to think of the Romantics, who dispensed with what they perceived to be the overly rationalist mechanistic and empiricist models that informed the eighteenth century in favor of more dynamic interrogations of consciousness. However, in recent years we have seen a notable surge in eighteenth-century criticism focused on the philosophy of mind. This can perhaps be attributed to the fact that the eighteenth century, with its special preoccupation with the mind as a physical entity or system, speaks more directly than Romanticism to our current computational and neuroscientific frameworks. Indeed, our own ... Read More

  • Necromedia by Marcel O’Gorman (review)
    • Abstract: Necromedia is an ideal book for posthumanism. It makes a posthumanist argument in a style reminiscent of Cary Wolfe’s What Is Posthumanism? It gives a precise theoretical perspective for questioning various forms of art, including film, literature, and digital media. Like Heidegger’s “The Question Concerning Technology,” it questions technology from the perspective of the human. Unlike Heidegger, its driving interest is affirmation. O’Gorman refers to the book as “an examination of how, in contemporary culture, the technical aspect of the human has collided with the symbolic aspect, resulting in a situation where technicity itself has become the basis for heroic recognition” (p. 3). O’Gorman’s ... Read More

  • Of Remixology: Ethics and Aesthetics After Remix by David J. Gunkel
           (review)
    • Abstract: The first thing to note is that this is an excellent book. Its content is interesting, cogent, lucid, and a valuable resource for understanding contemporary culture. All four of these aspects are not always present in academic books. In Of Remixology, David J. Gunkel addresses what remix means and the questions it raises about cultural verities that most people take for granted. In doing so, he creates a new philosophical space for articulating a cultural transition that may have begun over a century ago but has accelerated in recent years. Throughout the book, Gunkel mixes, or remixes, philosophy from Socrates and Plato to Derrida and Deleuze with DJ Danger Mouse, Girl Talk, and Negativland— and ... Read More
