MILESTONES 1946 : Naissance

Writing History from the Margins. African Americans and the Quest for
           Freedom

    • Authors: Cécile COTTENET
Abstract: This interdisciplinary volume is assuredly a collective endeavor: the contributions convincingly edited by three leading French scholars in the field of African American studies reflect part of the work done within the scope of the three-year project “Writing History from the Margins: the Case of African Americans,” supported by Sorbonne-Paris Cité. Associating American and French scholarship, the collection combines several approaches, and perfectly embodies current trends in cultural history, with an emphasis on materiality. The two parts, “New Perspectives on African American History”, and “Material and Visual Culture and the Writing of History” are carefully balanced and connected not only through their common object, but also through their focus on print culture. As stated in the introduction, the essays are linked “by the desire to investigate the productive power of the margins” (3), and informed by the notion that if African American history – “history with an agenda” – is inh...

  • Black Wars and White Settlement: the Conflict over Space in the Australian
           Commemorative Landscape

    • Authors: Matthew GRAVES, Elizabeth RECHNIEWSKI
Abstract: The Australian commemorative landscape has long been dominated by memorials to white settlement of the continent and their associated historical narratives of discovery, exploration, pioneering and the extra-territorial war memory of Anzac. This article considers how Indigenous narratives were marginalized or suppressed in the construction of that landscape and it examines, from geo-historiographical and political perspectives, the struggle over commemorative space and the contemporary movement to recover and reinscribe social memories of the Frontier or Black Wars in Australia’s geography of remembrance.

  • Histories of Space, Spaces of History - Introduction

    • Authors: Matthew GRAVES, Gilles TEULIÉ
Abstract: Thirty years on from ‘the spatial turn’ in the humanities and social sciences, the “recognition that social and cultural life do not happen on the head of a pin but are thoroughly spatial” (Cresswell) has opened up new transdisciplinary fields of enquiry across the borders of geography and history, just as the rapid development of nomadic and networked communications technology has transformed our experience and understanding of time and space (Potts 1). Space and place are no longer seen as the context or outcome of socio-cultural processes, but as vectors of their circulation and flows, structuring networks, constellations and inter-connectivity, raising the prospect of a “global sense of the local, a global sense of place” (Massey 30). Historians have begun to stretch space and expand time, shifting perspectives from the close-up to the broader horizons of trans-national and trans-temporal histories ; in David Armitage’s words “where once historians preferred the microscope we ar...

  • World War Two Iconoclasm: The Destruction and Reconstruction of memorials
to Queen Victoria and Edward VII on the French Riviera

    • Authors: Gilles TEULIÉ
Abstract: This essay explores the process linked to the desecration and subsequent rebuilding of monuments erected on the French Riviera to commemorate the British monarchs who had a positive influence on the development of Menton, Cannes and Nice as coastal resorts. When two statues of Queen Victoria and one of Edward VII were either defaced or completely destroyed during the Second World War, French agencies, to varying degrees, wanted to restore the statues to their rightful place. Although the examples used in this essay all had different operating modes, I argue that they nonetheless were motivated by similar factors which reveal a pattern to wartime iconoclasm and help explain its impact on postwar commemorative policy.

  • Blurring boundaries: early Sinhala cinema as another Adam’s Bridge
           between Ceylon and India (1948-1968)

    • Authors: Vilasnee TAMPOE-HAUTIN
Abstract: Within the context of ambiguous Indo-Sri Lankan relations, I seek to probe the question of cinema as a cultural and political articulation between these two spatialities, transcending colonial boundaries and traditional rivalries. I will argue that nascent cinema coalesced the Indo-Sri Lankan spaces into one whole, structuring networks, constellations and inter-connectivity. How did early cinema become a treading and trading ground and a “global village” (MacLuhan) for citizens of the world, overriding criteria of caste, class, language and religion' But while cinema blurred conventional frontiers and enhanced social and cultural flows across borders during the colonial era, the opposite is true of the post-independent period of the 1950s when movements for the political hegemony of the Sinhala people would rapidly spill over the cinema industry. This paper will thus consider the way the film industry also articulated Sri Lankan ethnicities: at the core of the discussion will be the...

  • From Britain to India: Freemasonry as a Connective Force of Empire

    • Authors: Simon DESCHAMPS
Abstract: This article aims at exploring the role played by freemasonry in knitting Britain and its Indian empire closer together. It argues that masonic lodges played an instrumental role in facilitating the circulation of men, information, and ideas across the vast interconnected masonic network that came into being by the second half of the 18th century. As a form of sociability, the lodges also contributed to creating a familiar environment, a reservoir of Britishness, that would contribute to making the Briton feel at home, thus creating a social and cultural continuity between the mother country and the Indian Empire, and a degree of of inteconnectedness to the Anglo-Indian world. Studied as a transnational force linking the metropole to the colonial periphery, freemasonry brings together these two spaces within the same analytical frame.

  • Memory and history of the Great(er) War and India: from a
national-imperial to a more global perspective

    • Authors: Thierry DI COSTANZO
Abstract: This essay explores memorial and historiographical aspects of British India in World War One. In India today there is little interest in either commemorating or researching the topic. In the West, there is growing interest in the contribution of Indian troops and the commemorations of the Great War centenary. We argue that India’s role in the First World War is a subject that should not be overlooked in the new global historical perspective on the conflict. We submit that studying the war in relation to the contribution of the colonial empires, particularly the British Empire in India is of crucial importance in understanding the post-war world, the anti-colonial movement, the stability of the British Empire in Asia and the international relations of the sub-continent.

  • Words in Place: Mapping Australian Literature

    • Authors: Toby DAVIDSON, John POTTS
Abstract: This article considers literary mapping as an instance of the contemporary construction of space through digital networked technology. Digital cartography – mapping with the means of digital technology, internet and GPS technologies – represents space as a virtual layering of information. The digital cartography project Words in Space is discussed as a case study of digital literary mapping. Analysis of the data contained in this literary map reveals significant aspects of literary commemoration in Australia.

  • National history and migrant history after the transnational turn: the
French in Australia and the articulation of Frenchness

    • Authors: Alexis BERGANTZ
Abstract: This article considers the advancements made in Australian historical scholarship since the transnational turn and how these can now be applied to the writing of national histories. In particular, by considering the case of ‘the French presence’ in Australia, it explores how transnational insights can help bridge the historiographical divide between ‘ethnic’ or ‘contribution’ history and mainstream Australian history through the use of cultural theory.
