  • “And I have no face, I have wanted to efface myself” Sylvia Plath’s
           Autothanatography or Death Writing

    • Authors: Nicolas Pierre BOILEAU
Abstract: Plath’s work has often been described as an auto/biographical account of her death wish, and for some, her 1963 suicide was the evidence confirming her obsession for the morbid. The overwhelming presence of grief and mourning in her life has also been said to adumbrate the tone of most of her poems. Yet, very little has been done on the question of “autothanatography,” even if indeed Plath’s works seem to be far more concerned about death than life. Autothanatography suggests that there is a form of autobiographical writing that is less interested in the author’s past life than in the future/ upcoming death of the subject. Following in the footsteps of French psychoanalytical theory on Melancholia, this paper seeks to observe one of the blind spots of Plath’s critical literature, that is the real presence of death in language, causing subjects to be impossible to grasp and locate. Plath’s autobiographical writings were not means to fight off death, but to account for its looming pre...

  • Introduction

    • Authors: Claire SORIN, Sophie VALLAS
Albert Cohen Since the 1980s-1990s, the terms “autopathography” and “autothanatography” have increasingly been used by the theorists of autobiography. Defined by Thomas Couser as “life writing that focuses on the single experience of critical illness,” autopathography often— but not always—envisions death. The aporic term autothanatography, the writing of one’s own death, has provided a useful framework for the theorists interested in the relationships between writing, the self and death. Much of the theoretical background of autothanatography can be attributed to French thinkers (Jacques Derrida who spoke about his “testamentary writing”, Louis Marin or again Maurice Blanchot, the very embodiment of the modern myth of the writer, according to Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe who described bo...

  • Gábor Gelléri, Philosophies du voyage. Visiter
           l’Angleterre aux 17e-18e siècles

    • Authors: Nathalie BERNARD

  • Michael Dobson and Estelle Rivier-Arnaud, Rewriting Shakespeare’s Plays
For and By the Contemporary Stage

    • Authors: Jean-Louis CLARET
Abstract: The central concern of Michael Dobson and Estelle Rivier-Arnaud’s book is the re-writings that Shakespeare’s plays inspired, or as Gérard Genette – referred to in the introduction - would have put it, on the various palimpsests that continue to enrich our bookshelves. Indeed, this volume is about literary works – the word ‘rewriting’ gestures toward the literary field – and the editors acknowledge that a comprehensive account of Shakespeare-inspired creations would have been “an anthology in itself” (5). The word ‘rewriting’ is analysed in the introduction and it is presented as including such processes as translation, allusion, rehearsal, repetition and even interpretation. All in all, the introductory demonstration aims to remind the readers that Shakespeare’s plays are the source of inextinguishable and variegated inspiration. It would have been interesting to remind them from the outset – rather than in the conclusion (161) - that some of Shakespeare’s plays are palimpsests too ...

  • Toying with Death in Walden

    • Authors: Yves CARLET
Abstract: This essay tries to question the usual, quasi-consensual reading of Walden as a celebration of life, health and youth. It relies on a network of underground metaphors which introduce a number of disturbing interferences into the text, from slumber, choking or infectiousness to decay and death, and are deliberately concealed by humor or the grotesque. It also attempts to show how these motifs gradually emerge, how they climax in the chapters devoted to the winter months, and how they appear even in the final celebration of spring rebirth.

  • “Death Drive, Martyrdom, and Deathbed Scenes. The Narration of Death in
           Harriet Wilson’s Autobiographical Novel”

    • Authors: Karima ZAARAOUI
Abstract: This paper examines the autothanatographical occasion(s) in Harriet Wilson’s autobiographical novel. Published without anyone noticing in 1859 and resuscitated in 1981, Our Nig; or, Sketches in the Life of a Free Black, North first appears as a commercial failure but most importantly as a voice coming from the vault. From a narratological point of view, the plot hinges on characters’ deathbed scenes and premature deaths or death wishes, culminating in a performance of death. In light of Aristotle’s definition of tragedy, this article proposes to read Our Nig as a profound meditation on death, race and God. Wilson as an autothanatographer, genuinely enacts her own death through her writing project. Against all odds, her project will go beyond its object in an ultimate “death-defying act” (Thomas Couser).

  • Inside Paul Auster’s Crypt: Autobiography and Spectrality in Ghosts

    • Authors: Giorgos GIANNAKOPOULOS
Abstract: Ghosts, the second novel in Paul Auster’s The New York Trilogy, can be read as a fictionalized theoretical speculation on autobiography, one that problematizes such oppositions as the auto- and hetero- of biography, the self and the other, the writing of one’s life and the writing of one’s death. Auster’s writing practices resonate with Jacques Derrida’s insights into the nature of autobiography. Reflecting and complicating his own autobiographical writing, Auster’s early novel assumes the form of a postmodern detective story playing on the motif of criticism that views the criminal as author and the detective as reader while rendering both roles unstable and interchangeable. Detective and criminal are both effects of linguistic operations, trapped in the textual web that is woven around and between them, as texts, letters, and reports circulate and are dispatched in order to return to the sender according to the logic of what Derrida has termed the postal principle.

  • (Auto)pathography, Photography, Trauma in Aleksandar Hemon’s The
           Lazarus Project

    • Authors: Angeliki TSETI
Abstract: This paper wishes to discuss photo-textual autopathography as a narrative model that testifies to the ways in which, as per Cathy Caruth, “one’s own trauma is tied up to the trauma of another” (Unclaimed Experience 8), and may thus respond to the challenges of addressing an allegedly unrepresentable traumatic experience, while establishing a nexus of affiliations between different traumatized subjects irrespective of spatiotemporal specificities. Aleksandar Hemon’s The Lazarus Project (2008) consists in a disguised autobiography and a fictional biography, and constitutes an eloquent example of Leigh Gilmore’s suggestion that life-writing trauma is often performed by an individual narrating their life story through the experience of others. Significantly, these (auto)biographical gestures are performed in photo-textuality, in other words the combination of written text and photography—and its particular, as per Barthes, relation to death—in a relationship of reciprocity and complemen...
