  • Canonization, Colonization, and the Rise of Neo-Victorianism
    • Authors: Cox J.
      Pages: 101 - 123
Abstract: AbstractOver the last two decades, contemporary culture has witnessed the rapidly increasing popularity of neo-Victorian (literary, filmic, and stage) texts and the development of critical interest in the field. The neo-Victorian genre was initially construed as a subgenre of postmodernism, but more recently has been considered in relation to broader literary and cultural trends. This essay considers the construction of the neo-Victorian canon, and contends that its formation follows the same trajectory as that of the broader literary canon in the early twentieth century, initially excluding or marginalizing particular works (in particular, popular fiction and culture) prior to expanding to include a wider array of texts and genres, including, in recent years, global literatures. I map the development of the neo-Victorian canon to date, including critical debates around the genre, and examine the implications of this in terms of prevailing attitudes towards literary and cultural scholarship, popular culture, and textual colonization, before considering the (sometimes problematic) usage and connotations of the terminology associated with this key genre of contemporary fiction. I consider the potential problems of the genre’s rapid cultural and critical expansion, and in the conclusion to the essay, suggest some possible future directions for neo-Victorian scholarship in terms of the continued canonical expansion and its ethical framework.

  • William Wordsworth’s ‘Lucy Gray’ and le mal d’archive :
           Melancholy, Archives, and Spectrality
    • Authors: Kerler D.
      Pages: 126 - 144
Abstract: AbstractThis article explores the interrelation of melancholy, archives, and spectrality in William Wordsworth’s ‘Lucy Gray’. Drawing on the Derridean notion of ‘le mal d’archive’ and various concepts of melancholia (Sigmund Freud, Julia Kristeva, and Slavoj Žižek), it will be argued that the poem is characterized by a melancholic sense of loss that kindles the speaker’s fever to archive and relive the past through art. A close reading shall illustrate that the archiving of Lucy turns out to be an ambivalent endeavour since her aesthetic re-visioning is oscillating between the presence and absence: whereas Lucy’s absence is the origin of the speaker’s melancholic archival fever, her subsequent re-visioning results in a ghostly presence that can only be discerned by following her traces – traces that ultimately indicate the archive’s (i.e. spaces, the archiving subject, and the poem itself) inherent destructive side and its spectrality.

  • John Keats, Wilfred Owen, and Restriction in the Sonnet
    • Authors: Suret E.
      Pages: 145 - 162
Abstract: AbstractImplicit in John Keats’s aim to be ‘among the English poets after my death’ is a desire to secure a position of poetic influence, and it is in the sonnet that he most self-consciously balances his duties as both poetic heir and father. ‘If by dull rhymes our English must be chained’ sees Keats delineate his inherited formal traditions at the same time as he refashions them to shape his own unique bequest to English poetry. Previous criticism on influence and legacies has focused on the poet as an influenced figure. However, this article views Keats as considering the potential of being an influencing figure and explores the effectiveness of his interactions with his inheritors. Responding to Keats’s invocations, Wilfred Owen strives to ensure the longevity of the sonnet by taking the Romantic poet ‘as his supreme exemplar’ and positing himself as Keats’s poetic heir. In ‘Futility’, Owen claims the inheritance of ‘If by dull rhymes our English must be chained’, and meets the demands of the sonnet alongside those of the battlefield. He revives and extends the revisionary strategies of Keats as he tends to a form that is as disfigured as the soldiers he elegizes.

  • Gender, Power, and Satire in Will Self’s Cock and Bull
    • Authors: Mathews P.
      Pages: 166 - 184
Abstract: AbstractWhile Will Self’s Cock and Bull has rightly been seen as a satirical critique of gender and sexuality, this article argues that critics have tended to overlook the intertwining critique of power that accompanies such themes. Placing Cock and Bull within the larger context of Self’s subsequent writings and intellectual influences, this essay examines how these two early novellas self-consciously borrow from and engage with the tradition of British satire, which has long been concerned with questions of gender, sexuality, and power.
