Abstract: In this autumn 2017 special issue of English, ‘The Classroom of Literature’, we bring together an interesting range of discussions about the relationship between literature and education. This relationship is as pertinent and as fraught now as it was a century ago for D. H. Lawrence and Henry Handel Richardson (Ethel Florence Lindesay Richardson), the two authors explored in our articles. Moreover, as Stella Achilleos’s The ViewfromHere illustrates, this relationship is one that finds particularized expression in different places around the world.

  • The View from Here – At the Crossroads Between East and West: Teaching
           English Literature in Cyprus
    • Authors: Achilleos S.
      Pages: 204 - 207
Abstract: ‘What does “English” mean now'’ This is the question with which the new editorial team of this journal opened up their Editorial in 2016 in a volume (no. 65) that expressed the team’s dedication to considering the multiplicity of voices and viewpoints produced by English as a ‘global discipline’. The invitation to contribute to the series of pieces inaugurated in that issue under the title ‘The View from Here’ has been an opportunity for me to reflect on my own position as a teacher of English literature on the island of Cyprus. The questions this process has generated are too numerous and complex to answer fully in a short piece like this. For instance, what does it mean to teach English literature today on an island that is in many ways still caught up culturally and politically between its colonial past and its post-colonial (or, should I say, neo-colonial) present' More specifically in my case, what does it mean to teach Renaissance English literature to university students in Cyprus' How is that inflected by our place in history and current geo-political position' What differences, if any, are there between teaching this literature to British students and teaching it to Cypriot ones' How does my own position as a Greek-Cypriot academic come into play, for instance, in the kinds of questions I ask and invite my students to ask about texts'

  • A Pedagogy of Shame: Coercion and Democratic Education in D. H.
           Lawrence’s The Rainbow 1
    • Authors: Taylor R.
      Pages: 208 - 239
Abstract: ‘A Pedagogy of Shame: Coercion and Democratic Education in D. H. Lawrence’s The Rainbow’ offers a reading of The Rainbow that foregrounds Lawrence’s criticism of Britain’s public educational system. In short, I argue that the first of the Ursula Brangwen novels contains a powerful indictment against state-promoted public education. Through a heart-rending depiction of Ursula’s traumatic experiences as a public-school teacher, Lawrence exposes four crimes committed against the individual during the educational process – normalization, shame, capitulation, and violence. Employing the psychological theories of Sylvan Tomkins, I posit that Lawrence’s complex treatment of shame in this novel necessitates a re-examination of The Rainbow, one that reconfigures the historical and literary context in which it is often read.

  • How It Must Be Said
    • Authors: Chan M.
      Pages: 241 - 241
Abstract: What isn’t obvious isn’t obvious because I choose to obfuscate. O chews its own tail like a rabid dog. What does it say about me, this obsession written in a language I never chose' My desires dressed themselves in a hurry of English to avoid my mother’s gaze. How I typed “Shakespeare”, then “homoeroticism + Shakespeare” into Google, over and over. My mother did not understand the difference between English words, thus she let me be. A public history seeps into the body, the way tea leaves soak up the scent of a fridge. An odourless room is not necessarily without trauma. We must interrogate the walls. My skin is yellow because it must. Love is kind because it must. Admit it, aloud.

  • Between Girls: Lateral Discipline in Henry Handel Richardson’s The
           Getting of Wisdom
    • Authors: Emmett H.
      Pages: 242 - 260
Abstract: Henry Handel Richardson’s representation of lateral discipline in her 1910 novel, The Getting of Wisdom, is significant for the way in which it makes visible the reorienting of disciplinary structures that took place as the private, domestic tuition of middle-class girls gave way to institutional, collective schooling in the last third of the nineteenth century. Focusing on this novel, which fictionalizes the author's own experience of Melbourne’s Presbyterian Ladies’ College from 1883 to 1887, this article considers her representation of girls as not just objects but agents of disciplinary action. I argue that in boarding school, novels such as Richardson’s discipline functions laterally, between peers, in ways that often reiterate the ‘vertical’ authority of parents and teachers but also contest it, moving into the space created by its failures or absences. Reading these novels thus requires a reorientation of our own theoretical models for thinking about discipline, in particular, the Foucauldian panopticon and his conception of the segmented space of the school, which do not allow for the kinds of sideways glances that proliferate across Richardson’s novel. The Getting of Wisdom thus provides the opportunity to theorize anew the role played by the peer group in shaping girls into social subjects, a role that was a cause for both celebration and concern by commentators of the time.

  • Living by the Pen: In Conversation with Sunjeev Sahota
    • Authors: Shaw K.
      Pages: 263 - 271
Abstract: Sunjeev Sahota is one of the leading lights of contemporary British literature. Although he writes in a familiar form, the content of his work is anything but ordinary. From social dislocation in contemporary India, to the hidden labour behind Sheffield takeaways, to the radicalized generation responding to twenty-first-century British society, his novels tackle some of the most pressing social and political concerns of our times. The stories are set in Northern England, but the themes of his two best-selling novels and the lifestyle of their author are profoundly global. Sahota splits his time between a home in Sheffield, family in India, and an international diary of literary work. In the last twelve months alone, Sahota joined Leeds Beckett University as the first University Writer in Residence, took part in a British Council trip to promote contemporary British literature in Russia, and scooped the EU Prize for Literature in the immediate aftermath of Brexit. Before this whirlwind of success, and a variety of concurrent social and political changes in the UK and overseas, Sunjeev Sahota agreed to an interview for English. The interview that follows reflects on many of the events that occurred in the twelve months leading up to the day we conducted our interview, in person, at Mrs Atha’s coffee shop in Leeds, UK on the eve of the 2017 UK General Election.

Abstract: Stella Achilleos is Assistant Professor in early modern studies at the University of Cyprus. Her research interests concentrate especially on the discourses of friendship, and on community and sociability in early modern England; early modern utopias; early modern political theory (with special emphasis on theories of sovereignty); and the literature of the English Revolution. She has published a number of essays in these areas and is currently working on a monograph on violence and utopia in early modern England.
