    • Abstract: What matters more now than asking the question: how we can improve the terms of our relationship with the environment? We need answers, because the problems caused by our current relationship are stark. According to Greenpeace, unless we cut back on greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 – an annual five percent reduction – we will generate ‘runaway’, irreversible, climate change. We will reach peak oil production sometime between 2010 and 2030: soon, geo-political arrangements and socio-economic systems dependent on fossil fuels will be terminally disarranged. The 2006 Stern Report foresaw 5C average temperature rises, 200 million people displaced by flooding by the middle of the century, along with huge falls in food production, and between 15% and 40% of species facing extinction.11 Man-made desertification and deforestation ravage vast swathes of the earth, we deplete the oceans, pollute the skies. The resulting conflicts for ever-scarcer resources and safe spaces are impelling human migrations on a scale not seen for centuries.

  • Edward Thomas, Poetry and the Languages of Nature
    • Authors: Middleton R.
Abstract: Edward Thomas’ poetry is read as belonging to the mystical tradition of English poetry, particularly in relation to Wordsworth’s conception of the poet as mediator between the ‘everyday’ appearance of the world and that which goes beyond it. Whilst Thomas may not be seen as an obvious contender for such a tradition, several of his poems concern both the physical aspects of nature and a quiet search for something beyond the physical that is felt to be there, even if access to it is uncertain or unachieved. Of particular interest are the recurring references to ‘languages’ of nature in poems such as ‘Sedge-warblers’, ‘The Word’, and examples from his prose. Thomas’ poetry is placed in the context of his time and the prevailing materialistic worldview. By rejecting the dream of the water nymph in ‘Sedge-warblers’ and focussing solely on the water of the brook, Thomas aims to write in a way that is appropriate for his time, yet also engages with the transcendent aspects of nature. Further examples of Thomas’ works are examined in relation to links between the sensitivity of children and the sensitivity of poets towards both the physical and transcendent aspects of nature. Antony Easthope’s work on empiricist poetics is discussed in relation to Thomas, as is Scott Knickerbocker’s theory of sensuous poesis. The article concludes by examining some of Thomas’ own writing and poetry that concerns the ‘aliveness’ of language, and how it can be used to create poems that achieve the vital power described by Wordsworth.

    • Abstract: Kader N. Hegedüs is a doctoral student in the English Department of the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University for Fall 2016. His dissertation makes part of a research project funded by the SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation) on ‘Space, Place and Image in the Poetry and Prose of John Donne’, and explores how the ‘imagined’ spaces John Donne creates in his poetry respond to and are symptomatic of developments in the ‘real’ spaces (scientific, religious, urban and natural) of the early modern period.

  • The ‘Specific Evidentness’ of Contemporary Radical Landscape Poetry:
Innovative Form and Spatial Presence in The Ground Aslant
    • Authors: Widger E.
Abstract: This article attempts to account for the spatialization of language in a selection of radical landscape poems from Harriet Tarlo’s 2011 anthology, The Ground Aslant. Following Merleau-Ponty, I suggest that the poems share a ‘specific evidentness’ with objects and phenomena in the environment, which unsettles ontological hierarchies in which artworks, including poems, ‘represent’ the world. On the other hand, I understand confidence in the ontological reality of that world to relate in important ways to the possibility of artistic representation, as Alva Noë and Martin Seel propose. Radical landscape poems offer a way out of the tension between the artwork as representation of something, and as object with phenomenal presence, in that they are both ‘seen’ and ‘seen through’, according to Lyotard’s formulation in Discourse, Figure.

  • ‘Love, Let Me Some Senseless Piece of This Place Be’: Landscape, Body,
and the ‘Creature of Place’ in Donne’s Songs and Sonnets
    • Authors: Hegedüs KN.
Abstract: This article reconsiders the function John Donne (1572–1631) attributes to tangible landscapes and environments in his Songs and Sonnets. Inscribing these metaphors within wider considerations on Donne’s spatial imagination, I suggest that traditional criticism has been privileging his fascination towards the scientific discoveries of his times and their emphasis on rather abstract ideas of spatiality (cosmology, cartography, microcosmic and macrocosmic relations), while neglecting for the most part occurrences of ‘placial’ components – with the precise landscapes that they presuppose – in his love poetry. A closer look at poems such as ‘The Bait’ ‘Twickenham Garden’ or ‘The Blossom’, however, highlights Donne’s approach to the intricate relationship his characters seem to entertain with the environment they occupy. Mostly articulated in terms of corporeal transformations and divisions, these poems stress how lovers tend to become a ‘creature’ of the place they occupy, and the resulting tensions that arise between body and mind. This article concludes by suggesting that these ‘placial’ metaphors actually legitimate and invoke the ‘spatial’ flexibility, generally favoured by critics, one can observe in the other poems where Donne’s characters succeed in resolving these tensions.

  • ‘Local Site And Historical Depth’: Briggflatts , A Drunk Man, and
           British Modernist Poetics of Place
    • Authors: Rogers S.
Abstract: This article aims to present new understandings of how place, identity, and text are configured in British modernist poetry, particularly in the extended poem. Focusing chiefly on Basil Bunting’s Briggflatts (1966), the discussion explores this poem’s alignment of geography and history as sources of identity, noting a stark contrast with the kinds of rootlessness more readily associated with the Poundian long poem. Bunting can be seen to marshal a variety of spatio-temporal signifiers to convey a located identity, and it is demonstrated that Hugh MacDiarmid’s A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle (1926) enacts similar processes more explicitly. MacDiarmid and Bunting’s historicized and located writing is briefly contrasted with Louis Zukofsky’s depthless language, which carries conflicting spatial implications. William Carlos Williams’s Paterson is then discussed as representing an American poetics of place that shows key commonalities with Bunting, but works with a distinct conception of history. Ultimately, it is argued that Bunting and MacDiarmid can be viewed as typifying a specifically British modernism, even whilst complicating and interrogating notions of Britishness. Their shared poetics of place are concerned with maintaining roots in the local site, but also asserting Northumbrian and Scottish nationalisms.
