  • La fin des révolutions

    • Authors: Tamara Kondratieva

  • Resursy kul´turnoi pamiati i politika pamiati o pervoi mirovoi voine
           v Rossii

    • Authors: Boris Ivanovich Kolonitskii

  • La mémoire impossible

    • Authors: Maria Ferretti

    • Authors: Peter Gatrell
Abstract: This article examines the refugee crisis in Russia in the era of war and revolution. It considers the historiography and the reasons for historiographical neglect; and asks questions about its political, social and cultural significance. The refugee crisis posed fundamental questions about the scope, purpose and outcomes of attempts to manage people who were on the move on an unprecedented scale and in an unforeseen manner. The article also asks to what extent refugees were able to express themselves, whether to lament the circumstances leading to their displacement, to criticise the arrangements made on their behalf, or to articulate a sense of their future. The first part of the article discusses some of the extant source material, including anglophone accounts. It goes on to consider the politics and practice of relief work, including by semi‑official bodies such as the Tatiana Committee, by public organisations (notably Zemgor), and by new national committees that claimed the re...

  • Zemstvo severnoi oblasti v epokhu rossiiskoi grazhdanskoi voiny

    • Authors: Liudmila Novikova

  • The Russian Revolution in German Historiography after 1945

    • Authors: Matthias Stadelmann
Abstract: The article traces the paths of West German historiography on the Russian Revolution during the post‑war period. After the great caesura of 1945, German historiography on Russia had to venture into new beginnings beyond national‑socialist paradigms of perception. Historians then concentrated on political activities, perspectives of development of a constitutional monarchy in Russia and the destructive force of Bolshevism. The general turn to social history brought about a paradigm shift in the interpretation of 1917. Scholars now problematized the seemingly deficient structures of “Old Russia” and changed their perspective from state and politics to the needs and interests of society. This led to the insight that the Bolsheviks could carry out their coup only due to considerable support by the masses. Mostly the attitudes towards the bolshevist concern were rather sympathetic; sometimes the pendulum swung even to a Marxist‑Leninist self‑positioning, which never was the result of an ...

  • The Russian Revolution as Continuum and Context and Yes,—as
           Revolution

    • Authors: Peter Holquist
Abstract: The author reviews recent English‑language works on the Russian Revolution, with particular attention to those works emphasizing the roles of war and violence. The review essay highlights the recent trends to present the Revolution as a part of a larger continuum, and to contextualize the period of war and revolution as compared to other societies. The recent focus on: 1) the role of the First World War; and, 2) on the role of empire in Imperial Russia’s deluge, is a very welcome development. Yet, the essay argues, we should not lose sight of the dynamics examined in an earlier literature on the Revolution, such as labor and agrarian unrest in European Russia.

  • Interview with Richard Pipes

    • Authors: Jane Burbank
Abstract: Jane Burbank (JB): So Professor Pipes – I find it difficult to call you “Dick” even after all these years! Richard Pipes (RP): I have no objections. JB: We’d like to begin with your book The Russian Revolution. It came out in 1990. You, of course, had already worked for many years on many aspects of Russian history. So why did you decide to focus on the revolution itself at this time' RP: I think it was a suggestion of Isaiah Berlin. I remember talking to him about this and at that time the principal English version of the history of the Russian Revolution was E.H. Carr’s. Not only very biased but also very dull. It really did not have a chronology, it didn’t have any conflict and so on. So, I decided to do it. And I worked on it for a good ten years. It came out ultimately in three volumes. Although the first two volumes were published by Knopf as one volume, there were really two volumes, followed by a third volume, Russia under the Bolshevik Regime. JB: When did those ten years st...

  • Interview with Manfred Hildermeier

    • Authors: Stefan Plaggenborg
Abstract: Stefan Plaggenborg (SP): You wrote two books on the “The Russian Revolution,” which cover the years 1905 to 1921; the “History of the Soviet Union” beginning in 1917; and, recently, you published a “History of Russia” from the Middle Ages to 1917. It seems that 1917 lies somewhat in the middle of your research interests. However, we do not find a chapter about the question of whether or how one should remember this particular year in Russian history. We could start with this question. The beginning of World War I was widely and publically remembered all over Europe. Why should societies in Europe and elsewhere remember Russia’s year 1917, and what should they remember' Manfred Hildermeier (MH): The answer is simple, because the Russian events of 1917 had a Europe‑wide and, in the long run, even—in the very sense of the word—a global impact. This is true in several respects. For one, the demise of the Tsarist Empire had also the almost immediate consequence of Russia’s military breakd...
