  • The Cloud Delivers Reliability, Increased Flexibility and Better
           Performance for Local Government
    • Abstract: Software solutions provide local government agencies tremendous benefits in managing work performed on critical assets and property as well as the lifecycle of these assets. With the arrival of the cloud, many agencies are choosing to deploy software using this innovative technology, which offers numerous benefits and substantial returns, including reduced costs, increased scalability and flexibility, quicker response times, and new remote-access and disaster-relief capabilities.

  • Distributed Geospatial Computing: Maximizing Resources and Minimizing
    • Abstract: The ability to access and share geospatial data across a distributed enterprise is vital in making geospatial solutions the foundation for any global effort. The idea of distributed computing is based on the simple idea that one can build a single virtual system from multiple autonomous computers that communicate through a shared network.

  • GIS for the Great Oudoors: Web Maps Help Users Enjoy North Carolina's
           Wildlife Resources
    • Abstract: Interactive maps allow the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to provide accurate, up-to-date information about public access to statewide fishing, hunting and boating opportunities—an important service for a state fish and wildlife agency to provide when so many of its constituents rely on getting information online.

  • Connecting the Cloud to Disaster Recovery
    • Abstract: How can cloud computing assist in disaster-relief efforts? An industry-government team is putting an open cloud environment to the test in a real-time disaster simulation, allowing a diverse, international group of emergency responders to quickly collect, store and share critical geospatial information. The exercise is designed to show that an interoperable, hybrid cloud operating environment can be enabled and relied on when a multifaceted response is needed for a complex, major disaster.

  • Seven Steps to Enterprise GIS
    • Abstract: To gain the benefits of true enterprise GIS—a complete approach for sharing, using and managing geospatial information to meet business and workflow needs—an organization needs more than GIS tools, hired experts or even a GIS department. It needs a systematic approach that allows integration of enterprise GIS components: servers, desktop software, mobile applications and developer environments.

  • Enterprise GIS Solutions: Overcoming the 'Big Data' Bottleneck
    • Abstract: Big data, in the traditional sense, has focused on the terabytes and petabytes of data impacting very large corporations. However, times are changing, and big data has evolved into an issue that affects businesses of all sizes. The true definition is based on an organization's ability to effectively process and make large, complex datasets usable. For most small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), just hundreds of gigabytes of unmanageable data can be daunting.

  • Take It SLO: New Mexico Spatially Empowers Enterprisewide Land-Management
    • Abstract: Persistent legacy applications and workflows often are difficult for organizations to spatially enable, especially when the data source is complex and lengthy. Increasingly, key decision makers find themselves needing data that can be analyzed in context with location and associated business data to support timely business solutions. As an effective example, the New Mexico State Land Office (SLO) offers how to "do it right" by geoenabling its right-of-way (ROW) data that support, among other things, lease-management business processes.

  • A Survival Guide for GIS in the 21st Century
    • Abstract: GIS professionals have struggled to meet the rising expectations of management and customers with limited staff and smaller budgets. Often, requirements for maintaining legacy applications further sap resources. With curtailed budgets, they may feel that the very survival of GIS in the organization is in jeopardy, and they may be right.

  • The GroWNC Project: Visualizing Alternative Futures in the Southern
    • Abstract: Imagine being tasked with accommodating almost 200,000 new people in a beautiful, historic landscape without degrading those natural resources. This is the setting for the GroWNC Project: a regional visioning process spearheaded by Land-Of-Sky Regional Council; local governments; and a consortium of businesses, nonprofits and individuals.

  • WaSSI: A New Web-Based Tool Assesses Water Supply
    • Abstract: Healthy forests provide several goods and services that benefit humans, called ecosystem services. Some important examples include water supply, wildlife habitat and carbon storage. Often these goods and services aren't traditionally valued; by managing national forests to sustain ecosystem services, the Forest Service encourages responsible decision making and long-term stewardship of the nation's natural resources.
