  • Editorial: Industrial networks for resource efficiency
    •
  • Business-to-business end-of-life IT industrial networks
    • Abstract: Business-to-business waste electrical and electronic equipment systems are not reported under current European Union regulations. This paper examines the independent, unreported, industrial networks for the collection and treatment of such waste in the UK, Austria, Germany, Romania and Spain. Methods used are semistructured interviews and surveys of relevant literature. The results show that treatment options are highly driven by the end market for the resulting product. Reuse rarely occurs in Austria and Spain, but is common in the UK and prevalent in Germany. The flow of equipment through different recovery/disposal routes cannot be estimated. It is concluded that a solution needs to be developed to avoid negative sustainability impacts, but which does not place such a burden on the industry that it makes the practice unattractive.

  • Recycling glass-fibre-reinforced plastics in the automotive sector
    • Abstract: The automotive sector is facing the challenge to become more resource-efficient in the manufacture of cars and their components. One approach is to increase the share of recycled materials. This paper presents the results of a case study for the automotive sector of the EU-funded Zerowin project. A safety-relevant component of the braking system was selected for manufacture using a mechanically recycled composite plastic material (polyethylene terephthalate reinforced with short glass fibres). The case study demonstrated the interdependencies between material and component specification, component design, material properties and the production process: using recycled glass-fibre-reinforced plastics for a safety-relevant component is not just an issue of input substitution, it is an interplay of technological (product development, production process modification, recycling process), organisational (security of supply, network infrastructure) and economic (material cost savings versus adjustment costs, planning horizons) factors resulting from the input substitution of primary material and changes of material properties. An industrial network was established and the case study's findings were transferred to serial mass production. Industrial networks are seen as an appropriate tool for securing the supply and quality of recyclates from traceable sources.

  • Resource efficiency networks in the construction of new buildings
    • Abstract: This paper reports on a study to develop a construction resource efficiency stakeholder network in the UK. The primary stakeholders in the network were the client, designer and main contractor – the decision-makers on construction techniques, materials and products. The paper outlines the rationale for the study, development of waste-prevention measures and industrial networks, progressive implementation in three separate construction activities, barriers and practical constraints, key results, conclusions and recommendations. Improvements were achieved through increased specification and use of sustainably produced construction materials, greater separation of materials for recycling, increased reuse of materials and behaviour changes in energy and water use as a result of on-site monitoring.

  • Zero-waste networks in construction and demolition in Portugal
    • Abstract: This paper presents the results of Portuguese case studies on developing an industrial network around a construction site and three zero-waste demolition projects. The case studies analysed to what extent it is possible to achieve a significant reduction of the solid waste produced and an overall decrease in energy and water consumption. The results show that the reduction targets could be achieved by implementation of good practices in waste management and the development of networks to allow an increase in the reuse and recycling rates of wasted materials and residual water. At the construction site, overall achievement of reduction rates was additionally enforced by the substitution of inputs with strong potential impacts on the decrease of fresh water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions along the supply chain.
