  • Bitcoin: Benefit or Curse?
    • Authors: Hurlburt; George F.;Bojanova, Irena;
      Pages: 10 - 15
      Abstract: The new world of mobile devices offers reasonable likelihood that virtual currency will prevail on a global scale. Currently, the bitcoin crypto-currency model appears to be a forerunner. Bitcoin, a highly disruptive technology, has both supporters and detractors. Nonetheless, in concert with other trends, some form of virtual currency, even if a successor to bitcoin, appears to have a path forward. Virtual currencies will likely gain in stature as other novel, unspecified, and disruptive innovations take hold in a world of increasingly autonomous systems. This department is part of a special issue on mobile commerce.

  • Mobile-Money Benefits and Usage: The Case of M-PESA
    • Authors: Mugambi; Allan;Njunge, Christopher;Yang, Samuel C.;
      Pages: 16 - 21
      Abstract: Launched in Kenya in 2007, M-PESA is one of the world's first mobile-money services. This study examines different M-PESA business models, their associated benefits, and factors leading to the service's growth. The study assesses the benefits of person-to-person, person-to-business, and business-to-business models, and investigates factors leading to M-PESA's adoption and growth at individual, organizational, and societal levels. With the spread of mobile-money services, especially in developing countries, an improved understanding of these services can better serve development agencies and nongovernmental organizations by providing not only another tool for international development but also effective ways to use that tool. This article is part of a special issue on mobile commerce.

  • Mobile Banking and Payment in China
    • Authors: To; Wai-Ming;Lai, Linda S.L.;
      Pages: 22 - 27
      Abstract: The number of Internet users in China was more than 590 million at the end of June 2013. Among these users, 460 million accessed the Web through mobile devices such as cellphones and tablets. Many Chinese are now using cellphones to perform a wide range of transactions, such as transferring money, paying bills, booking hotels, buying tickets, and shopping in online stores such as Taobao, Paipai, Dangdang, and Yoybuy. An investigation of the development of mobile banking and mobile payments in China, as well as opportunities and barriers, is therefore important. This article is part of a special issue on mobile commerce.

  • Barter: A Technology Strategy for Local Wealth Generation
    • Authors: Knowles; Bran;Lochrie, Mark;Coulton, Paul;Whittle, Jon;
      Pages: 28 - 34
      Abstract: Encouraging people to spend locally is a popular strategy for reviving languishing economies. Traditional approaches involve the circulation of alternative local currencies, which often fail for reasons external to the notion of local fiscalism itself. Mobile social networking might provide one mechanism for circumventing these problems by augmenting existing currencies with information relating to their flow within the local economy. This article is part of a special issue on mobile commerce.

  • Secure Mobile Payment Systems
    • Authors: Tellez Isaac; Jesus;Sherali, Zeadally;
      Pages: 36 - 43
      Abstract: The last two decades have witnessed explosive growth in the emergence of various types of mobile computing technologies that have empowered users to access services anywhere, anytime, and from various types of portable devices. Technological advances such as low-cost, high-performance user devices (such as phones), high-speed cellular access, secure communication protocols, and the Internet have accelerated the design and deployment of mobile payment (m-payment) systems and applications, which have been gaining rapid acceptance in many parts of the world. Security is of paramount importance for all parties (users, merchants, banks, and so on) involved in m-payment systems and interactions. The authors discuss various security issues that need to be taken into account during the design and implementation of m-payment systems. They also review security solutions that are used to support end-to-end secure m-payment transactions. Finally, they highlight some of the future challenges and opportunities of m-payment systems as they become fully integrated with other emerging technologies such as fifth-generation mobile networks and cloud computing. This article is part of a special issue on mobile commerce.

  • Exploratory Testing as a Source of Technical Debt
    • Authors: Ali Shah; Syed Muhammad;Torchiano, Marco;Vetro, Antonio;Morisio, Maurizio;
      Pages: 44 - 51
      Abstract: Practitioners generally view exploratory testing (ET) as a cost-effective substitute for their daily testing activities. However, empirical evidence reported in the literature gives a more comprehensive picture of ET that considers its technical debt implications.

  • Mobile Commerce: A Broader Perspective
    • Authors: Seth; Earley;
      Pages: 61 - 65
      Abstract: Many organizations are trying to understand how to leverage the unique combination of content, data, and functionality provided by mobile devices. This is especially true in the retail sector, where significant mobile commerce growth is predicted. However, ecommerce and transaction statistics are only one part of the picture when it comes to leveraging mobile commerce. This department is part of a special issue on mobile commerce.

  • Masterminds of the Arpanet
    • Authors: Strawn; George;
      Pages: 66 - 68
      Abstract: The Internet began with the Arpanet, which celebrates its 45th birthday this year. The Arpanet came out of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which was created in 1958 and, through its Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO), has been a major source of support for IT research and development. Early IPTO directors envisioned interconnected computers, and three masterminds in particular led the effort to achieve this vision: Larry Roberts, Bob Kahn, and Vint Cerf.
