  • Internet of Cores
    • Authors: Abolfazli; Saeid;Sanaei, Zohreh;Bojanova, Irena;
      Pages: 5 - 9
      Abstract: The Internet of Cores (IoC) is a new conceptual phenomenon for provisioning on-demand elastic computing and storage resources to people and things anywhere, anytime, from any interactive connected device on a global scale. It facilitates the seamless integration of every computing and storage entity around the globe, including cloud datacenters, cloudlets (public desktops), corporate/individual computers and smartphones, and car-mounted computers, all referred to as cores. The IoC will support and enrich cyber-physical systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) by enabling globally connected societies, and has the potential to play a crucial role in realizing their goals. In this article, the authors highlight motivations for the IoC, present a few use cases, and discuss how the IoC has benefits for normal everyday life as well as disastrous situations.

  • Intelligent Energy Industrial Systems 4.0
    • Authors: Robison; Patricia;Sengupta, Manjusri;Rauch, David;
      Pages: 17 - 24
      Abstract: The industrial Internet, which includes intelligent industrial systems and interconnections, is accelerating the fourth industrial revolution and the world's transformation into the Internet of Anything. This transformation is being driven by the rapid deployment of intelligent industrial systems that interconnect to industrial and information systems. The energy sector is transforming as intelligent energy industrial systems interconnect and use information from industrial monitoring systems, external industrial systems, and information systems. The deployment of intelligent energy systems to the industrial Internet has economic and environmental benefits, but also many technical challenges with interconnectivity and security. This article provides examples of intelligent energy systems that have been deployed within the industrial Internet, and describes benefits and challenges associated with their deployment.

  • Security, Privacy, and the Built Environment
    • Authors: Boyes; Hugh;
      Pages: 25 - 31
      Abstract: The built environment is entering a period of great evolution, enabled by the adoption of building information modeling (BIM), the increased use of technologies in digital asset management, and the emergence of smart assets and the Internet of Things (IoT). This article considers the impact of these developments on security and privacy, and outlines the rationale for adopting a broader approach to cybersecurity than the confidentiality, integrity, and availability triad that's used by the information assurance community. It considers the impact of using new, predominantly wireless technologies in the built environment and discusses the need for security and privacy improvements.

  • Big Data Privacy in the Internet of Things Era
    • Authors: Perera; Charith;Ranjan, Rajiv;Wang, Lizhe;Khan, Samee U.;Zomaya, Albert Y.;
      Pages: 32 - 39
      Abstract: Over the last few years, we've seen a plethora of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, products, and services make their way into the industry's marketplace. All such solutions will capture large amounts of data pertaining to the environment as well as their users. The IoT's objective is to learn more and better serve system users. Some IoT solutions might store data locally on devices ("things"), whereas others might store it in the cloud. The real value of collecting data comes through data processing and aggregation on a large scale, where new knowledge can be extracted. However, such procedures can lead to user privacy issues. This article discusses some of the main challenges of privacy in the IoT as well as opportunities for research and innovation. The authors also introduce some of the ongoing research efforts that address IoT privacy issues.

  • Designing a Cyber-Physical Cloud Computing Architecture
    • Authors: Simmon; Eric;Sowe, Sulayman K.;Zettsu, Koji;
      Pages: 40 - 45
      Abstract: In this era of interconnectivity, where almost everybody, everything, and anything are networked, cyber-physical systems (CPS), also known as the Internet of Things (IoT), have emerged as vital systems that use information systems to observe and modify the physical world. Despite the proliferation of CPS in our lives, many such systems still use hardwired designs to accomplish a limited set of functions, such as sensing, actuating, or processing data or information. To achieve the vision of a platform for enabling the full potential of CPS that will encourage and drive innovation, CPS designers will need a new architectural design that can help connect everybody, everything, and anything together to achieve both our known and unknown goals. In this article, the authors present such a conceptual design and discuss its essential parts and key characteristics.

      Pages: 53 - 59
      Abstract: Crowdsourcing is a powerful technique that harnesses distributed intelligence to solve organizational problems. As a distributed network, crowdsourcing's strength comes from how information is transmitted to and from an organization that identifies a problem to be solved or an issue to be addressed to the crowd members who provide solutions or ideas. Here, the authors critically review the latest developments in crowdsourcing in China. As crowdsourcing gains momentum, information technology professionals should realize the challenges and opportunities arising from Chinese crowdsourcing.
