  • The LATAM Financial Software Market
    • Authors: Dinoto; L.;
      Pages: 10 - 13
      Abstract: Financial institutions (FIs) in Latin America (LATAM) have been facing intensive software platform renewals as well as new installations to support new lines of business. CIOs have coped with sophisticated selection processes, ultimately having to decide among various local, regional, or global vendors. Throughout this process, the IT and business departments must understand clearly how the vendor works internally when it comes to product evolution. Here, the author highlights several considerations FIs must consider when evaluating vendors.

  • IT-Enabled Business Innovation [Guest editors' introduction]
    • Authors: Harmon; Robert R.;Demirkan, Haluk;
      Pages: 14 - 18
      Abstract: To qualify as truly innovative, new IT applications must successfully achieve customer value cocreation, adoption, and acceptance. Without this, a new technology isn't an innovation; it's just a failed product or service that didn't gain traction. We're now well into an era in which significant competitive advantage is achievable from IT-enabled business innovation. This special issue was conceived as a vehicle for understanding some of today's issues and for looking at opportunities for tomorrow. The authors' contributions in all the articles have implications for IT-enabled innovations that go beyond the immediate application settings on which they report. A video discussing emerging service innovations is available at http://youtu.be/4xBRfWt20-I.

  • Big Data and IT-Enabled Services: Ecosystem and Coevolution
    • Authors: Chae; B.K.;
      Pages: 20 - 25
      Abstract: Big data goes beyond datasets and is more than an IT priority. This article positions big data in the context of business, technology, and innovation, and presents a service-oriented and evolutionary view of big data as a case of disruptive IT-enabled innovation. Big data services are IT-enabled services that emerge as a result of combining diverse data-focused resources from the ecosystem of technologies, market needs, social actors, and other institutional contexts. These services have already had far-reaching effects on business practices. The big data services ecosystem has changed over time through an evolutionary process of variation and selective retention. Businesses and governments should actively experiment with novel big data services by dynamically configuring heterogeneous resources from the ever-changing big data ecosystem.

  • IT-Enabled Information-Intensive Services
    • Authors: Chie-Hyeon Lim;Kwang-Jae Kim;
      Pages: 26 - 32
      Abstract: In information-intensive services (IISs), information interactions have a significant effect on service-value creation. Recent innovations in IT have facilitated the creation of various types of IT-enabled IISs (IT-IIS) in which IT is essential for information interactions. The authors introduce the generic composition of the IIS value-creation system, then view this system from an IT-oriented perspective to propose classifications for various IT-IIS types. This knowledge serves as a basis for designing new IT-IISs. The authors also conducted two IT-IIS design case studies.

  • Semantic Annotation and Classification in Practice
    • Authors: Rodriguez Rocha; O.;Vagliano, I.;Figueroa, C.;Cairo, F.;Futia, G.;Licciardi, C.A.;Marengo, M.;Morando, F.;
      Pages: 33 - 39
      Abstract: The Web's evolution into a Semantic Web and the continuous increase in the amount of data published as linked data open up new opportunities for annotation and categorization systems to reuse these data as semantic knowledge bases. Accordingly, information extraction systems use linked data to exploit semantic knowledge bases, which can be interconnected and structured to increase the precision and recall of annotation and categorization mechanisms. TellMeFirst classifies and enriches textual documents written in English and Italian. Although various works present solutions for text annotation and classification, this article describes and studies the use case of a telecommunications operator that has adopted TellMeFirst to add value to two services available to its users: FriendTV and Society.

  • Enhancing Cocreation Using Social Media
    • Authors: Halale; S.;Gangadharan, G.R.;Uden, L.;
      Pages: 40 - 45
      Abstract: Innovation is essential for firms to survive in today's global economy. Cocreation is a strategy where customers and providers participate in the innovation process. Social media is a perfect tool for cocreating value because it promotes communication between the organization and the customer. It's fast becoming an integral part of business operations and has many important uses, including innovation. This article explores the use of social media in cocreating business value. The authors' study provides a conceptual framework for understanding core elements and processes of cocreation using social media. Using the conceptual framework, they examine and analyze case studies from IBM and SAP in the context of use of social media in cocreation.

    • Authors: Houser; W.;
      Pages: 54 - 57
      Abstract: Until we establish professional standards of practice for cybersecurity, Internet commerce will be punctuated by calamities like the Sony exploit of 2014. We continue to put a growing percentage of our assets online, providing organized vandals, criminals, and terrorists with lucrative targets such as Sony Pictures Entertainment. As the facts of Sony's experience become public, we are seeing important lessons for the Internet enterprise and notable implications for the discipline of security engineering.
