  • The Next Step for Learning Analytics
    • Authors: Fiaidhi; Jinan;
      Pages: 4 - 8
      Abstract: Use of learning analytics in real-world educational applications is growing as academic institutions realize its potential, especially in dealing with the exponential growth of unstructured data. Adding text analytics to learning analytics applications is particularly appealing, because most of the unstructured data dealt with in academia involves text. This article discusses the importance of using textual analytics within the paradigm of learning analytics.

  • Securing BYOD
    • Authors: Chang; J.M.;Pao-Chung Ho;Teng-Chang Chang;
      Pages: 9 - 11
      Abstract: Today's IT departments are concerned with the popularity of BYOD, because mixing personal and enterprise data presents security threats to corporate proprietary information. IT departments must develop company security policies that let employees access sensitive resources using personal devices.

  • From BYOD to BYOA, Phishing, and Botnets
    • Authors: Earley; Seth;Harmon, Robert;Lee, Maria R.;Mithas, Sunil;
      Pages: 16 - 18
      Abstract: Not too long ago, desktop computers were provisioned for users, and applications were carefully vetted and controlled. Now, CIOs are dealing with laptops, smartphones, tablets, and a raft of new tools and technologies that present significant security, reliability, and IP protection challenges. Moreover, users have come to expect an information experience on par with that of their personal lives. Clearly, new policies must be enacted and new tools deployed to reduce risks and keep up with growing user expectations, but balancing accessibility and security has proven to be a significant challenge.

  • Consumerization in the IT Service Ecosystem
    • Authors: Castro-Leon; E.;
      Pages: 20 - 27
      Abstract: Most of the available literature on IT consumerization focuses on current practices--from operational aspects of BYOD to its disruptive effects--but does little to illuminate the dynamics behind the trend's emergence. Exploring the driving forces behind consumerization is essential if IT organizations are to both make sense of the current dynamics of transformation and disruption and formulate effective strategies in response. This article is one of the first attempts to explain these dynamics as part of a logical progression, from the Web's invention in 1989 to its evolution into machine-to-machine communication through Web services to SOA's role as an application discipline in virtualized cloud infrastructure context--all of which brings us to today's BYOD and BYOA.

  • Trust and Privacy Exploitation in Online Social Networks
    • Authors: Wong; K.;Wong, A.;Yeung, A.;Wei Fan;Su-Kit Tang;
      Pages: 28 - 33
      Abstract: Online social networks have been typically created for convenience--so they haven't been built from the ground up with security in mind. They often have confusing privacy settings and are susceptible to various kinds of attacks that exploit users' trust and privacy. In this article, the authors discuss security pitfalls in today's social networks, briefly introducing common attack methods. They implemented a proof-of-concept Facebook app, which is actually a harmless malware that uses common attack methods to demonstrate the vulnerability of online social networks. Although today's online social networks commonly offer users a variety of security settings, users tend to trust the information obtained from online social networks regardless of the settings. This kind of user mentality can be more crucial than technical aspects in determining the level of security in online social networks.

  • Low-Cost 3D-Supported Interactive Control
    • Authors: Masala; E.;Servetti, A.;Meo, A.R.;
      Pages: 34 - 40
      Abstract: Devices for stereoscopic vision are gaining increasing diffusion, but their usage is mostly oriented toward entertainment. A prototype based on consumer devices and open software to achieve low-cost 3D-video-supported interactive control is presented here. This research could stimulate the study and implementation of low-cost general-purpose systems that could be used on a wide spectrum of applications, including remote operation, education, training, and surveillance. There are two related Web extras that provide supplemental material. The first video [http://youtu.be/5zApDO3wSq4] shows the building blocks of the proposed teleoperation system based on real-time 3D video feedback. The second video [http://youtu.be/1Olg1oV2fIs] shows the experiment. A smartphone camera was mounted on a radio-controlled toy car, and users were asked to perform an alignment task using the 3D vision system and the car remote controller.

      Pages: 41 - 49
      Abstract: This survey of current job search and recruitment tools focuses on applying a computer-based approach to job matchmaking. The authors present a semantic-based software platform, LO-MATCH--developed in the framework of a European project on lifelong learning--that highlights future research directions. There are three related Web extras that provide supplemental material. The first video [http://youtu.be/yi9gNd_9g8E] introduces job matchmaking and the LO-MATCH platform. The second video [http://youtu.be/OGQ26dM_KjQ] shows how semantic technologies can be used in a job matchmaking scenario. The third video [http://youtu.be/l7j-7_5gFVU] demonstrates the LO-MATCH job matchmaking platform.

  • Deploying a Maritime Cloud
    • Authors: Dellios; K.;Papanikas, D.;
      Pages: 56 - 61
      Abstract: The maritime domain plays a decisive role in the modern worldwide digital economy and collaborative environments. In addition, emerging technologies such as cloud computing provide holistic frameworks for generating and delivering a plethora of interoperable, cost-effective, and scalable e-services that efficiently manage information and data stored inside large-scale datacenters. Driven by this motivation, this article presents a perspective beyond traditional IT utilization over the maritime domain: a roadmap to the Maritime Cloud. The authors define the Maritime Cloud stack and architecture in detail and describe the Maritime Cloud delivery and deployment models as an integral process for transitioning to the Maritime Cloud. The authors evaluate advantages and challenges and present future research directions.

  • Usability for Internal Systems: What's the Payoff?
    • Authors: Earley; S.;
      Pages: 66 - 69
      Abstract: The high quality of consumer Web experiences has raised the bar in terms of user expectations for accessing internal corporate information systems. IT organizations must embrace techniques for creating a high-quality experience and justify the related investments. Many times, investments in high-quality user experience development for information systems are justified through direct linkage to ROI. External websites focused on transactions, demand generation, and brand identity receive funding because the results can be realized in short order and measured in hard dollars. Justifying investments in internal systems requires a broader view of the customer journey and a deeper understanding of the linkages to internal processes that are less readily apparent.

  • Don Knuth: Mastermind of Algorithms [review of "The art of programming"]
    • Authors: Strawn; George;
      Pages: 70 - 72
      Abstract: Some algorithms make for "better" programs than others--that is, programs that execute in less time or require less memory. How can we quantify differences to determine which algorithms are better? No one has done more to answer this question than Don Knuth, who has been called the "father of the analysis of algorithms."
