  • Project based learning and team based learning for freshmen physics at
           Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology

      Abstract: Many technical universities in Taiwan face a challenge on students lacking interest in traditional classroom learning. This article presents the preliminary results of the course transformation for the freshmen Physics class at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology. The class STUST 2025 is a pilot class that aims to provide students with a more hands-on approach to acquire knowledge by performing team-based learning and project-based learning approach for various courses and project courses every semester. Participants for this special class included 50 students who were divided into 10 groups and assigned specific Physics topics as a guideline for their projects. Students are required to discuss and submit a proposal during the midterms and the final project and report at the end of the semester. Students are evaluated base from their performance in making the projects and the contents of the submitted documentation. The pilot course showed that although this course change breaks away from the student’s traditional learning environment, they were able to learn to work in teams and learn from their respective projects. Learning includes the challenges of working with others in accomplishing a project together. It also provided students a deeper understanding of theories and its applications in actual settings through studying differences in the results of the theoretically calculated values and the actual experimental values. However, in order to have a more holistic learning approach, improvements on the current practice will be done such as providing additional homework and short quizzes. Eventually this kind of practice will be implemented university wide.

  • Developing students’ writing skills in mathematical problem solving
           classroom using lesson study and open approach

      Abstract: The purpose of this research was to develop students’ writing skills in mathematical problem solving classroom using Lesson Study and Open Approach. Target groups were 1st grade students in fourteen mathematics classrooms using Open Approach as a teaching approach. Data were collected by using questionnaire of students’ learning skills. The research findings found that students’ writing skills in mathematics classroom using open approach were as follows; 1) students took note follow the rule of writing in notebook. 50%), 2) students wrote a well organize of their ideas in notebook. (21.43%), 3) students presented their ideas using picture or table and found their fault in presentation or explained their ideas and others’ ideas. (85.71%), 4) students wrote a summarize of the procedure, reasonable and easy to understand and found advantage and different from their friends’ presentation. (57.14%), 5) students explained their reasons consistent with expectations and could be summarized their ideas based on the problems (35.71%).

  • A framework of learning achievement by steam education for system analysis
           and design in case study RMUTT

      Abstract: The purpose of the study were: 1) to develop framework by STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education for system analysis and design, 2) to study the students’ satisfaction for STEAM education teaching integrated for system analysis and design, and 3) to study students’ behaviors after promotion of learning. The sample of this research was the computer science undergraduate students in the first semester of the academic year 2016 at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi. The number of samples 90 people, research tools that include: 1) lesson plans and activities plan, 2) the achievement test for pre-test and post-test in each hour, 3) the observation record of students’ behaviors in classroom, and 4) the evaluation from of learning and teaching at the end of course. The results show that the post-test score was significantly higher than that the pre-test, which verified the validity and reliability by statistics of Kolmogorov-Smirnov Z test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. For learning behaviors, all of them showed their responsibility to class regularly and did other jobs during the class. Two students per class (2.22%) missed the class and three students per class (3.33%) attended the class later than 5 minutes. In summary, A Framework of Learning by STEAM education for System Analysis and Design is enhancing learning potential with the intention could help students to improve their learning achievement and behavior in the class and can be used as a tool for learning enhancement.

  • High school students’ mathematical modelling in classroom using open
           approach

      Abstract: This research aimed to study students’ mathematical modelling in classroom using Open Approach. The target groups were 9 students of 11th-grade student in 2016 academic year, Kalasinpittayasan School, Kalasin Province. The research had collected the data in classroom by using open approach with 4 steps: 1) Posing open-ended problem, 2) Students’ self-learning, 3) Whole class discussion and comparison and 4) Summing-up by connecting students’ emergent mathematical ideas. Researcher analyzed students’ mathematical modelling based on Galbraith and Stillman’s framework. The result found that, classroom using open approach provided mathematical modelling in the second step of open approach, students’ self-learning and the third step supports students to fulfill their own modelling process from comparing ideas.

  • Pollen morphology of subfamily Nelsonioideae (Acanthaceae) in Thailand

      Abstract: The pollen morphology of Thai Acanthaceae Subfamily Nelsonioideae was investigated. The pollen type was tricolpate. Their apertures were longitudinal narrow colpi with acute ends. The polar axis length (P) was 16.3-42.5 μm and equatorial axis length (E) was 17.5-37.5 μm. The largest size was represented in Staurogyne dispar, while the smallest showed in Nelsonia canescens, Staurogyne glauca, and S. parvicaulis. The shape varied from suboblate to prolate. Micro-foveolate, foveolate, and rugulate tecta were found in 6, 11, and 7 taxa of Nelsonia and Staurogyne, respectively. Psilate was only revealed in Staurogyne macrobotrya. The wall thickness varied from 1.25-2.5 μm depending on species.

  • Enhanced storage stability of freeze dried rice bran hydrolysates by
           maltodextrin

      Abstract: In this study, rice bran hydrolysate (RBH) extracted by mild-subcritical alkaline water (mild-SAW) followed by protease hydrolysis was investigated for its storage stability. The effects of the ratio of encapsulating material (maltodextrin, MD with DE10) and storage time on antioxidant activities of RBH were investigated. RBH was freeze dried with and without MD at the ratio of MD to RBH of 0.5:1, 1:1 and 1.5:1, vacuum-packed in an aluminum bag and stored at 40 °C for 4 months. The changes of chemical and physical properties as well as antioxidant capacity were monitored during storage. Total phenolic content (TPC) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) of the RBH encapsulated with MD were more stable than those of the control (without MD) during storage. Browning intensity of all samples was constant during storage. The different ratios of MD had no effect on TPC degradation and FRAP, nevertheless MD cannot prevent the loss of protein solubility and ABTS radical scavenging activity throughout storage. The RBH encapsulated with MD at 1:1 and 1.5:1 ratios lowered an increased rate of aw and the changes of protein secondary structure were determined by ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. Therefore, maltodextrin can prevent deteriorations of antioxidant rice bran hydrolysates to some extent during storage.

  • Alleviation of salt stress effects on physiology of leaves in two
           cultivars of pigmented rice by application of spermidine

      Abstract: Treating plants with plant growth regulators to alleviate adverse effects of stresses such as drought and salinity has received growing attentions in recent years. In this study, the mitigation of salt stress effects induced by application of spermidine (Spd) in two indigenous pigmented rice cultivars, namely Niewdam Gs.no.00621 (salt-tolerant, having violet leaf color) and KKU-LLR-039 (salt-sensitive, having green leaf color) was investigated. Rice seedlings were grown in plastic pots filled with paddy soils mixed with farmyard manure (3:1) in a net-house under natural light conditions.  Sixty days after planting the plants of each cultivar were divided into 3 groups: (1) control group; plants irrigated with tap water, (2) NaCl group; plants sprayed with distilled water for 7 days prior to being irrigated with 25 mM NaCl and (3) NaCl+Spd group; plants sprayed with 1 mM Spd for 7 days prior to being irrigated with 25 mM NaCl. The salt stress treatment was conducted for 20 days. Sampling of leaves was performed at 10-day intervals (days 0, 10 and 20) to determine changes in the physiological characteristics of the leaves. Salt stress triggered an increase in electrolyte leakage (EL), malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), proline, protein and Na+ but caused a decrease in Fv/Fm, total chlorophyll and K+/Na+ ratio. Rice plants subjected to Spd pre-treatment showed, in comparison to the salt-stress treatment, a decrease in EL, MDA, H2O2, proline, protein and Na+ but increase in Fv/Fm, total chlorophyll and K+/Na+ ratio. The alleviative effects of Spd were more prominent in the sensitive cultivar (KKU-LLR-039). Spd can improve salt tolerance of rice, particularly the salt-sensitive genotype, by enhancing several physiological mechanisms such as maintaining ion homeostasis, water balance and membrane integrity as well as protecting pigments and photosynthetic machinery.

  • Effect of Apis Dorsata honey and honey sugars analogue on hematological
           and some biochemical parameters in albino rats model

      Abstract: Honey has been recognized for its wound-healing, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic and anticancer effects. This study was designed to examine the effect of daily oral administration of Malaysian Tualang honey (TH) and honey sugars analogue (HSA) namely fructose, glucose, maltose and sucrose in albino Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats model. Thirty nulliparous female rats were divided into three groups: Group 0 (negative control); Groups 1 and 2 received 1.0 g/kg body weight/day of TH and HSA respectively. After 120 days treatment, the rats were subjected to necropsy and blood samples were collected for analyses. The body weight, fasting blood glucose, haematological parameters and serum level expression of proteins such as Apaf-1, IFN-'''', TNF-ɑ and E2 were determined. Results show that an increased body weight was observed as the treatment progressed over days (p˃0.05). TH and HSA showed an increasing effect on the level of haematological parameters such as red blood cells (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb), packed cell volume (PCV) (p˃0.05), lymphocytes, TWBC, RDW, eosinophils, monocytes and platelets (p˂0.05) compared to the non-treated negative control. HSA showed a slightly comparable effect to the negative control for fasting blood glucose level, while TH presented a slightly hypoglycemic effect (p˃0.05).  The treatments also showed an increasing effect on serum level of Apaf-1, IFN-'''', TNF-ɑ and a reduced level for E2. In conclusion, daily supplementation of TH and HSA may modulate haematological and serological parameters.

  • Theoretical study of peptide nucleic acid
           with(2'R,4'R)-prolyl-(1S,2S)-2-aminocyclobutanecarboxylic acid
           acid backbone binding to DNA and self-pairing

      Abstract: The binding ability of pyrrolidinyl peptide nucleic acid (PNA) binding to its complementary DNA and self-paring has been studied experimentally. However, a detailed understanding of the binding property is still unclear due to the lack of their crystallographic data. In this work, structural and energetic properties of PNA-DNA and PNA-PNA duplexes were studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and quantum calculations. The studied pyrrolidinyl PNA backbone was (2¢R,4¢R)-prolyl-(1S,2S)-2-aminocyclobutanecarboxylic acid. MD simulations of three different forms (A–, B– and P–form) were performed in order to investigate the probable duplex conformation. As the results, PNA-PNA duplex exhibited the structural feature between A- and P-type conformations, while PNA-DNA double helix clearly showed the characteristic of B-form. In addition, quantum calculations revealed that the interaction of PNA-DNA duplex was larger than that of PNA-PNA duplex, indicating higher intrinsic stability of PNA-DNA compared to PNA-PNA double strand. This research may lead to a design of PNA for further applications.

  • Relationship between floret size and anther culture response in an
           ornamental sunflower

      Abstract: A correlative approach using light microscope and electron microscope was carried out in this study to assess floret characteristics and microspore developmental stages in an ornamental sunflower cv. Prado Red. The relationship between microspore stage with anther culture response on various culture media was also investigated. The results revealed a decrease in the percentages of mid-to late- uninucleate microspores from 39.33% of the outer unopened disk floret whorl 1 to 15.33% of the inner floret whorl 3. Disk floret length and anther size were positively correlated with the microspore stage. The callus induction was significantly affected by culture medium but not disk floret whorls and the interaction between them, while the percentage of embryogenic calli was significantly affected by culture media and floret whorls but not the interaction between them. Among the four tested media, MS medium supplemented with 2 mg l-1 α-napthalene acetic acid (NAA), 1 mg l-1 N6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and 100 ml l-1 coconut water produced the highest callus induction (60.44%) and embryogenic callus production (20.45%). Hence larger disk florets with higher percentages of mid-to late- uninucleate microspores responded well and produced embryogenic callus in the optimum culture medium.
